But, if you're ready to take something really fascinating and unusual, consider taking a fire dancing class. What's Fire Dancing? Fire dancing is one of the disciplines within the broader class of fire performance, which also consists of fire eating and fire breathing. Usually in sync with music or drum beats, the fire dancers will combine movement and the manipulation of flaming objects. What Are the Fitness Benefits? Studies show the health benefits of dance include losing weight, flexibility, and stress reduction. You raise your heart rate when you dance, which is important for the health of your heart and lungs. To keep you flexible, agile and strong, you'll move and stretch all sorts of muscles. Plus, it’s an excellent distraction that requires you to focus on your movement and the music rather than your worries. You can add a sexy sense of danger and rebellion to the activity by adding fire to the dance, which could offer you a sense of thumbing your nose at the restrictions within society. That releasegiving yourself permission to cut loose and leave your comfort zone in the dust-is energizing and great for your psyche. What Are the Tools? Fire dancers use flaming props that they maneuver around their bodies while dancing to create a performance that is fluid and visually mesmerizing. Poi, staff and hoops are the most popular props. Poi are flexible lengths of chain or cords with a cube of wick at the end that may be ignited for performances. Poi are usually used in pairs, with the dancers holding the non-flaming end of one in each hand and swinging them around their bodies as they dance. Poi are typically 20-24 inches long. Staffs will be longer, which are stiff bars that may include a cube of wick on both ends that'll be ignited much like a flaming baton. The artists will make use of the staff to twirl them around their bodies when they dance. Hula hoops are similar to the fire dancing hoops that you can attach sticks with flammable cubes of wick to each end. Allowing the dancers to twirl the hoops around their bodies, arms and legs when dancing, the sticks poke out from the hoop. Is It Safe? Fire Groove, Inc.
