This Saturday 29th of October, the town centre will be filled with ghouls, ghosts and all kinds of wonderful costumes as the people of Letterkenny get ready to follow the trick or treat trail.

Now in its 5th year the Halloween Fest is proving really popular with children and adults. Just Like last year, many shops on Main Street and beyond will take part in the Trick or Treat Trail and the fancy dress competition organised by Letterkenny CDP

visit the scream room, and the photo booth and finish the family afternoon by joining in the Halloween parade. For the young ones there is face painting and family games in all the shopping centres. To round off the evening at the end of the parade at 4.30pm as they once again bring their Halloween there will be a prize giving for the best fancy dress.

Donegal County Council is asking the public and local businesses not to provide materials for bonfires during Halloween weekend as these fires can cause serious damage to the environment and a risk to our health.

Suzanne Bogan, Waste Awareness Officer with the Council states that “while traditionally wood and straw were used on bonfires in recent times materials such as tyres, mattresses, furniture, plastics, metal etc are burned on bonfires. This type of activity is illegal. It is also an offence to supply waste materials to parties collecting for ‘Bonfire Night’. The burning of waste such as rubber, aerosols, plastics, foam, mattresses, couches and household waste material in bonfires is very damaging to our health and environment. When waste materials are burned on a bonfire harmful dioxins are created and released into the air that we breathe.”

She added “Donegal County Council is currently monitoring a number of locations were waste materials have been supplied as bonfire material over the past number of years and we are undertaking an audit of certain businesses to ensure that there is compliance under the relevant legislation and to ensure that waste materials are not supplied for burning on bonfires”.

Fireworks Illegal “It is illegal to possess fireworks in Ireland that may have been legally purchased outside the country” said Joseph McTaggart, Acting Chief Fire Officer with Donegal Fire Service.

Mr. McTaggart explains that “ille-

gal fireworks may not be manufactured to the appropriate safety standards and can ignite prematurely causing serious injury to the user or to others in the vicinity particularly children”.

Members of the public are asked

not to buy, use or supply fireworks and parents are requested to monitor their children and make sure they do not play with fireworks including bangers. Every year children end up tragically injured and often scarred for life after using illegal fireworks.

Being nominated for Marketing Excellence 2016 is a fantastic achievement for General Manager, Carolynne Harrison and her hard working team so early into their new business journey.

Carolynne, Robert Mc Elhinney (Deputy General Manager) and Chanelle Da Silva (Spa & Leisure Manager) had just three months to recruit a team of over 100 staff, purchase everything they needed down to the salts & peppers, create a strategic business & marketing plan and open their doors at Easter Weekend 2016.

HOW NOT TO SITE A TOURISM OFFICE

access with a more than helpful staff and an abundance of literature and information within its walls.

But for those holidaymakers who have arrived by bus and are staying around the town centre, it’s something of a struggle to get to.

Surely somewhere more central could have been found to locate a tourism information office that doesn’t just promote Letterkenny and surrounding attractions but the county as a whole?

Answers on a postcard.

DELTA BOYS MAKING SOME NOISE Donegal Tourist Office, a bit hard to get to if you’re a tourist!

A couple of Saturdays ago, I observed four tourists puffing their way over the hillock that separates the Port Road from the tourist information office on the Neil T. Blaney Road.

They had obviously walked out from the town to get to it and judging by their red faces and demeanours – none of them were what we might describe as lightweight – it had taken something out of them to get that far. And they still had to walk back. And consequently the first question they may have been asking - was there a local branch?

Something the locals themselves have been asking for a few years now – just why do we have our tourism office located as far removed from the centre as it’s almost possible to be while still within the vicinity of the town?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a fine building and for those tourists on hire-car holidays easy enough to

It’s a Friday night in McGinley’s bar –one of the town’s best venues for live music - on Lower Main Street and the poster on the wall announces the appearance of “DD & The Delta Boys – Rhythm & Blues just the way you like it”.

And those of us who turn up for this musical event cannot disagree. Fronted by Dermot Donohue, the band has you tapping your feet from the off and right through to the end.

I first saw them live at the Letterkenny Reunion last year in the Station House Hotel and vowed to catch up with them again. Only took a year but I don’t get out as much as I used to!

The Delta Boys also include Michael O’Boyce on bass (and drums when called upon), Fergus Brennan on guitar and vocals, and, normally, Ronan McKee on drums. But due to his absence, the versatile George Kelly took the sticks for the night and helped maintain the riveting sound that marks this band out from many of their peers.

Complete with trilby hats (I thought Conor McBride was going to be screaming copyright!) and the obligatory dark glasses on some of the members (Dermot being presented with a pair of Gucci sunglasses by his old school-mate, Vincent Blake shortly after the set began), they rhythmed and blued for close to two hours and even managed to secure the services of some of the customers/ fans on percussion, Vincent among them.

D.D. is the perfect frontman complete with the searing sound of his harmonica and there were highlights galore in terms of material – my favourite of the night being the stirring verion of ‘Jean Genie’ . The late Mr. Bowie would have nodded in approval. Sound and vision personified.

Absolutely no lowlights with the exception of that old stage dry ice trick – it kept ending up looking like something that had boiled over in Mike’s Diner….!

Nevertheless here’s a band that are smoking hot.

a treat. Where purely comical plays are concerned, this truly WAS the real McCoy. Your only hope is that the Gaels team behind it – and credit to every single one of them on, and off, stage – decide to stage it again at some point.

But that’s hardly likely to happen. Or is it?

GAELS SCORE WITH COMIC PRODUCTION

Saw a bevy (yeah, I checked it up) of swans landing in the Swilly the other day, a sight I always find both fascinating and comforting.

On route to God knows where, these migrating birds drop in to see us in Letterkenny at this time of the year before taking off again. Eventually two swans will set up temporary home near the banks of the river and for a few months will remain there and provide a spectacle for any aspiring photographers or bird watchers (the official name for the latter grouping is ornithologists but I can’t spell that!).

A wonderful sight and not even the town band out to greet them.

So good I had to go twice! I’m talking about the Letterkenny Gaels production of ‘It’s the Real McCoy’ which ran for eight nights earlier this month at the clubrooms at the Glebe.

A laugh a minute or more precisely every twenty seconds – one of the funniest shows I’ve seen in years (and I’ve been at meetings of Letterkenny Town Council!) and with an all local cast to help it along.

Chef Chris Molloy of The Lemon Tree Restaurant was crowned Donegal Chowder Champion at the recent county Chowder Cook-Off. Hosted by ‘The Food Coast – Donegal’s Good Food Initiative’ the county cook-off took place at the Hooked! Maritime Festival in the LYIT Tourism College, Killybegs and chef Chris Molloy will now to go on to represent Donegal at the 7th annual All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off competition in Kinsale early next year. Donegal is hoping to retain the title, after Inishowen chef and restaurateur, Kieran Doherty, brought the award home to the county for the first time last year.

“I’m over the moon to be crowned the Donegal Chowder Champion and I’m particularly delighted to be taking the title back through the gap to Letterkenny. I’d like to thank everyone who helped out in any way and pay special tribute to Eve-Anne McCarron of The Food Coast – Donegal’s Good Food Initiative for organising the event and looking after all of us. Our passion at The Lemon Tree is to source local and sustainable produce, which is an easy task given Donegal is blessed with great food producers. I’m looking forward to representing our county in the All Ireland Chowder Cook-Off next year and will be doing my very best to make sure we can make it two in a row for Donegal.”

A loud purring reached her ears as a black cat leaped up on the table next to the rocking chair she was sitting in.

“Yes, my sweets. Isn’t that a pretty night we have in store for us? Old man moon looks down on us with a wink in his eye tonight.”

The cat stared at her with deep green eyes, attention fixed on every word.

“You know what this night means, don’t you, Trickster?” The cat let out a soft meow, listening to his master.

A look through old books & publications

HERE’S THE FIRST OF A NEW MONTHLY COLUMN WHICH BROWSES THROUGH OLD BOOKS AND PUBLICATIONS WHERE LETTERKENNY IS FEATURED. WE START OFF THE SERIES WITH A FAR FROM FLATTERING REFLECTION ON ONE OF THE TOWN’S ICONIC LANDMARKS...

I

t has been the subject of lavish accolades down the decades – an ornate and spiritual masterpiece that dominates Letterkenny’s skyline and over the years a wide range of historians, architects, tourists – not to mention the locals – and guide books have commented upon its magnificence since it opened in 1901.

But the ‘Shell Guide to Ireland’, published by Ebury Press in London in 1967 offered a rather different perspective on St. Eunan’s Cathedral.

The comprehensive book, which detailed towns and villages right throughout the country, was written by Lord Killanin, a journalist at the time and member of the National Monuments Advisory Council, and by Michael Duignan, also a member of the Council and former staff member of the National Library and the National Museum of Ireland.

Their piece on Letterkenny started off by describing the town as situated near the head of Lough Swilly and one of the two administrative centres of County Donegal, the other being Lifford.

LYIT AWARDS FEMALE IN COMPUTING BURSARIES

Industry bursaries awarded to six first year female students at Letterkenny Institute of Technology Earlier this month the ‘Female in Computing’ Initiative was launched in LYIT. Fifteen first year female students in the Department of Computing applied, of which six were awarded industrial bursaries.

These bursaries were sponsored by the following companies; Pramerica (Letterkenny), Allstate (Derry), Gartan Technologies (Letterkenny), Sita (Letterkenny) and Internetalia (Donegal Town).

The Higher Education sector in Ireland is experiencing difficulty in recruiting females into computing and IT related programmes of study.

Introduction of initiatives such as this bursary scheme will hopefully act as an incentive to entice second level female students into courses and careers in the IT sector.

Female students needed Dr Gertie Taggart, Head of School of Science said, “the STEM area (i.e.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) has difficulty in attracting females. Traditionally, these areas have always attracted and retained more boys and men than girls and women. Unfortunately, this situation is

not getting any better and is, in fact, worsening”.

“Statistics from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) of Ireland indicates that 15 years ago 47% of new entrants into Science, Maths and Computing courses at third level were women.

By 2013 that proportion had fallen to 40%, with just 436 female entrants into computer science at third level out of a total of 2,613, or 16 per cent.

Thus employers who wish to achieve a gender balance in the workplace are struggling to achieve this objective. Hopefully with the introduction of Computing as a Leaving Certificate subject this ‘tide’ might turn”.

Special week of activities planned for the Halloween break at Aura Letterkenny Aura Letterkenny is a hive of activity during the Halloween break, there is a Halloween Fun Camp, intensive swim lessons, along with week two of our new swim term.

The Halloween Fun Camp is for 5-12 year olds and includes a mixture of sporting activity, arts and crafts and Halloween fun. The camp will run from this Tuesday 1st November until Friday 4th November, 11am 4pm daily.

Let’s look at some of the more ‘less known’ breeds...

The Letterkenny Advertiser loves dogs so every month we will feature different breeds of our canine pals so you can learn a little about these amazing pets, companions for life, a member of the family, they deserve to be cared for and they truly offer lots of fun, joy and unconditional love, so in Part 3 we feature a few less known breeds.

Bearded Collies are dedicated dogs. Their ancestors herded sheep on the Scottish Highlands, and they are happiest herding your flock of kids around.

They tend to be a vibrant, happy, vigorously bouncy member of your family! That beautiful coat requires a serious commitment to grooming: by you daily, and by professionals monthly. Bearded Collies are vocal dogs.

Bearded Collie Height: 20-22 in. Weight: 45-55 lb Lifespan: 12-14years Bearded Collies are responsive to training, easy to please, and intelligent, large dogs. This independent breed loves human companionship, and does well with children and small dogs but as herding dogs, they may try to herd smaller children when playing.

They have a tendency to bark or howl when excited or faced with unfamiliar people or animals. Beardies make great companions for active individuals, singles, families with older children, and those who love the outdoors. They love being outdoors and need plenty of time to play and run outdoors every day.

Puppy

Intelligent, Strong & Reliable Bullmastiffs are confident, steady, and fearless, giant dogs. This bold breed loves children but can be suspicious of strangers and other dogs. These dogs can be gentle but are difficult to train and need a strong leader. They are prone to boredom and don’t do well when left alone for long periods of time. Bullmastiffs are not suited to live in hot climates and make great companions for singles and active individuals. They require minimal exercise such as a moderate daily walk or play session.

These devoted family dogs need regular, but not strenuous, outdoor exercise.

Royal and Prior Comprehensive School Prize Giving - October 2016 This month over 400 parents, current and former pupils, staff, members of the Board of Management and invited guests attended the Annual Royal & Prior School Prize Giving in the Cathedral Hall, Raphoe.

Over 100 prizes were distributed for not only academic and sporting excellence but also for recognition of academic progress and effort. The proceedings started with a welcome from the Chairperson of the Board of Management; The Rev Canon John Merrick and involved speeches from the Head Girl; Louise Stewart, the Head Boy Robin McClean; the Principal Dr Howard Welch; the President of the Past Pupils Association Mr Aubrey Oliver and Mrs Maud Walsh from the School’s Patron Body; The Donegal Protestant Board of Education. The Prizes were distributed

by Prof Wendy Baird, a past student originally from Killycreen, Ramelton and who is now Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Sheffield. After the distribution of the Prizes Prof Baird addressed those present highlighting her own educational journey encouraging the students present not to be disheartened if their plans don’t work exactly as they had hoped.

Prof Baird talked of taking the opportunities that presented themselves but always be guided by the things about which they are passionate. The evening ended with the Benediction being

announced by the School Chaplain; Mrs Jayne Chambers.

The Principal, Dr Howard Welch commented how important the prize giving was in the life of The Royal and Prior when he said, “The evening was a celebration of not just of those who have excelled in their studies and of those who have excelled at making the most of their abilities both inside and outside the classroom but of those who have supported and encouraged them such as parents and teachers.”

He also remarked as to the inspiration contained in Prof Baird’s speech, “Prof Baird encouraged us all by reminding us all that we are not defined by are academic achievements results but rather by how we use are talents to improve Vicky Sloan, Matron, Zara Wilson, Royal School House Prize Winner, Niamh Merrick, Royal School House Prize Winner and Gary McKeague, House Master at the Royal and Prior Comprehensive School the lives of those around us.”

Exploring Suicide Prevention at Connecting for Life Conference The first annual Connecting for Life conference for Donegal was held on Friday 7th October in the Inishowen Gateway, Buncrana.

The purpose of the conference is to share good practices and build connections in suicide prevention. There was a great turnout with over 80 individuals from Health, Education and Community & Voluntary organisations interested or involved in suicide prevention in attendance.

The conference comes under the Connecting for Life Donegal action plan which is a 5 year plan (2015 -2020) for suicide prevention that involves a broad range of organisations and individuals from the statutory, non-statutory, the community and voluntary sector, and also the general public. This local plan forms part of the national Connecting for Life strategy which sets a minimum target of a 10% reduction in the suicide

rate in Ireland by 2020.

The conference was chaired by Liam Ward, Director of Community, Enterprise & Planning Services in Donegal County Council and the opening address was provided by an Cathaoirleach, Cllr.

Terence Slowey.

Speaking on the deeply sensitive and devastating issue that is suicide in society the Cathaoirleach noted the need for cooperation in this area saying “in the world we live in today with people facing many different types of difficult situations and challenges it is hard to think of anyone who has not been directly affected by suicide or mental health issues. Now, more so than ever, we must stress the importance and value of community, community spirit, and cooperation to combat these issues”.

“We as a Local Authority have an onus to help people with mental health issues and focus on providing support to people who are in crisis, whether it be housing, job creation or promoting social inclusion. Our aim here today is to bring people together from different sectors,

services and communities in order to strengthen our collective ability to be a major force for change in suicide prevention in Donegal.”

Anne Sheridan, Mental Health Promotion/Suicide Resource Officer for HSE Donegal gave an update on the implementation of the Connecting for Life action plan to date followed by a number of guest speakers from different areas of the community.

To conclude, Dr. Kevin Malone, Professor of Psychiatry & Mental Health in UCD gave an overview of the national and local picture in terms of suicide rates and encouraged the audience to keep strengthening their cooperation and build deeper connections as the best means of promoting positive mental health and reducing rates of suicide.

‘Supporting Our Local Community’

Kavanagh’s of Ballybofey present local GAA clubs with new training kit Mac Cumhail Park, Ballybofey was the only venue capable of holding the Kavanagh’s SuperValu ‘Kit for Clubs’ presentation earlier this month as up on 350 local young fans attended representing six local clubs.

Local County stars Michael Murphy & Frank McGlynn gave up time in their busy schedules to present training gear and sign autographs for the youngsters.

The presentation was the result of a promotion run by Kavanagh’s since early Spring where each club collected tokens in-store. Each club had to reach 2000 tokens to get the new gear and six local clubs did just that!

County Stars, Murphy and McGlynn have been great ambassadors in this SuperValu initiative, the lads went over and above the call of duty by signing loads of autographs for the young fans as well as chatting to and inspiring the kids.

The Supervalu ‘Kits for Clubs’ programme has grown from strength to strength this year and has attracted over 1,000 supporters to the various grounds.

Kavanagh’s store manager Charlie Ferry hosted the event at Mac-Cumhaill’s with teams representing Naomh Conaill, Glenfin, St. Mary’s Convoy, MacCumhaill’s, Robert Emmetts and Red Hughs.

Stars of the future Charlie spoke to the Letterkenny Advertiser about the success of the promotion in the local area.

“We at SuperValu are delighted to team up with grassroots GAA in our area similar to the GAA ethos we have embedded in our local communities, so we are very pleased to reward six local clubs with O’Neills training gear, maybe the future Michael Murphy or Frank Mc Glynn of the County is amongst these young players? The ‘Kits for Clubs’ presentation culminated in four months collecting tokens in store for their local clubs and the presentation night held at Sean Mac-Cumhaill Park afforded the budding young stars the opportunity to meet their heroes.”

North Western Golfing Alliance members usually arrive at Narin/Portnoo Golf Club well wrapped up and prepared for the worst of weather, for their experience over the past few years has been that they have been greeted with heavy downpours of rain usually accompanied with gale force winds but, not on Saturday, as the course was in happy mode and at her most alluring and beguiling, having relented from her aggressive welcome of previous years to display herself at her most benign and tender.

In saying that, apart from two members in the gross section and one in the nett, the members could not take advantage of the relatively calm conditions and returned very modest scores, even though the front nine returns showed promise but most of the field faded on the more difficult back nine.

Letterkenny Golf Club Notes

M.P. LEADS THE WAY! With the late summer-like weather lasting well into the week, it was cat 3 member M.P. O’Donnell (16) who took full advantage of the benign conditions and, although recording a double bogey at Hall Door (1st), Michael took the turn with 20pts only for another double bogey at 10th (Cornagill) and a ‘blank’ at Stackyard (14th) to halt progress but 19pts on inward nine was enough to relegate Sam Hegarty (18) to runner-up on 37pts.

Saturday 22nd was day one of the annual Audi Open Weekend of Golf and driving into the record books was club ‘seniors’ team captain Kevin Kiely (8) who, with birdies at 1st, 3rd and 5th holes, returned a level par 22pts on outward nine and, with a nett level par four over on back nine, scored his way onto the team panel for Sunday’s final with a winning total of 40pts.

In runner-up spot was single figure handicapper Simon Stephens (3) whose magnificent level par round card read like a European Tour player’s with successive birdies at 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th holes for a two (2) under outward nine, double bogeys at 13th and 17th and yet another birdie at Stockade (18th) for a two over back nine and 39pts.

quickly erased by his birdie at 7th for a 20pt front nine and, once again, if not for a double bogey at 18th, Enda would have taken the winner’s title.

In third place with 37pts was Kevin Roche (19) and gross was won by Kieran Sweeney (6) with 30pts gross.

winning the 10k road race on Sunday and of course will be hoping for a treble by leading his club seniors team to win the Donegal Seniors Challenge Pennant for the second year in succession this Sunday, 30th October.

Card Irish Junior Open Series 2016 and with up to eight hundred (800) entrants taking part this year, it culminated in Letterkenny Golf Club junior member, sixteen year old Patrick Page, winning the Munster u18 Junior Cup!

Event organizer and PGA Professional Michael Gallagher, Clandeboye GC., was understandably delighted at the speed in which the Series has grown, going from strength to strength to what has become one of Europe’s largest junior golf series. The five events, which were played at golf courses including Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry’s home clubs Holywood and Esker Hills over the summer months, culminated in the final event at Killymoon Golf Club in Co Tyrone.

Competitors from as far away as Dubai pitted their skills against the future stars of Irish golf in events which gave a multitude of prizes and goody bags, not to mention a world first for a junior golf series of a car to the first holein-one at the final courtesy of TJ Hamilton Volkswagen Cookstown.

Attending the tournaments from Barnhill were Patrick Page, Cian Harkin, Philip Cassidy, Christian Harris, Cian Page, Michael Shiel, all participating in under age competitions from u9-u18. Playing the home course of Rory Mc Ilroy, Cian Harkin came in 3rd place with Philip Cassidy and Patrick Page finishing in the top ten. Cian Harkin, Philip Cassidy, Patrick Page and Michael Shiel then immediately travelled to Concra Wood GC in Monaghan to partake in a junior qualifier where Patrick and Cian Harkin made the cut for the last twenty-four and Patrick being victorious in his category.

The lads then travelled to Ballinrobe where Cian Harkin, having led the tournament by two shots thru 10th, had a forgetable triple bogey on back nine to relegate him to third place.

The club’s ambassadors then continued on to play Esker Hills Golf course, the home club of Shane Lowry, where Patrick took 4th place, missing out on top tier by a half point.

But, making amends, it was in Dundrum Golf

Club in Tipperary that Patrick won the u18 title following his twenty-five foot putt to thehole. before proceeding to a most exciting finale in Killymoon Golf Club where six of the junShiel wins the Scratch Cup iors, Patrick Page, Philip Cassidy, Christian Harris, Michael Shiel, Cian Harkin and Ciaran Mc Cormack made it through to their underage finals whereby, in the u18 section, Patrick, Michael and Philip competed, with Philip making it through to the 36 holes play-off with a great return of one under over the first eighteen holes but unfortunately a few bogeys on second time out had him lose out on top spot, relegated to second by virtue of B.O.T.

Series Growth Having had endorsements from a host of sporting stars and celebrities, PGA Professional Michael Gallagher was understandably delighted at the speed in which the series has grown. “Having started with a dream of creating a professionally run event open to junior golfers between the ages of six and eighteen, I am thrilled with all the positive feedback.

This event has grown from under two hundred competitors in it’s first year to eight hundred in year three! I am also extremely thankful to the sponsors, volunteers and junior players for supporting my vision of having one of the best series in Europe. With big plans going forward, I have no doubt we can showcase some of the worlds best junior golfers in the future.”

Michael has also arranged another golf series to take place over ‘Halloween’, this Monday 31st October, and I’m sure that all junior golfers in Donegal will be waiting in anticipation to enter that one.

Following this year’s series of Junior Golf, the lads entered a Junior Cup competition in Portsalon Golf Club, organized by Eamon Mc Conigly, in which Patrick Page took top spot in the Shaw Shield with Michael Shiel placed runner-up by virtue of B.O.T. Cian Page also contested the Kernaghan Cup, meeting Ciaran Mc Cormack in the final which went to a play-off hole with Cian taking the honour

Another competition the following week-end and again, Letterkenny Golf Club’s name brought to the fore with sixteen year old Michael Shiel winning the Ballybofey/Stranorlar Carr Architects sponsored Intermediate Scratch Cup. With a return of 76 shots [+8], Michael’s putter was as cold as the weather as he missed birdie putt opportunities on 1st, 3rd, 6th and 7th, all inside ten foot, and took the turn at four over par. Teeing off at 12th, he was six over thru eleven then recorded birdie, par, birdie, bogey, double bogey, bogey, par.

Congratulations Michael.

Another junior who represented the club to high esteem this season was eleven year old James Sweeney (11) who qualified for the US Kids Golf Euro Championship in Scotland by virtue of aquiring second place in the Irish Qualifier played on the famous Portmarnock Links golf course in Howth, Co. Dublin. James then travelled to play in the knock-out round at Gullane G.C., home of last year’s Scottish Open and will no doubt be seen at Clandeboye G.C. at Halloween.

Congratulations to Christian Harris who competed in the Junior European Open, thought to be the hardest test in European Junior Golf.

This is an individual strokeplay event played off scratch open to boys and girls and Christian had the unique opportunity to be paired with Irish Girls’ International and Letterkenny G.C. P.G.A. Professional Seamus Mc Monagle prodigé Emma Forbes (5), the leading girls points scorer in the recent Inter-Provincial Championship and who also recently won the prestigious Seapoint u16 ScratchCup. There is no handicap limit in this Junior European Open competition and the qualifiers (the top two boys and one girl) from all regional finals go straight to the Champions Week Finals in Spain in November.

On Saturday 24th, the Letterkenny club’s u16 team played Dunfanaghy GC in the Donegal Junior Matchplay Cup over a two legged affair with the first leg at the away venue where they took a half point from three and in the return match on Sunday 25th at home, put up a very gallant performance, taking two matches but the deficit from the first leg was too much to overcome.

Junior Golf Thriving

The development of Junior Golf in recent years at Barnhill has been a thoughtful, diligent programme, first implemented in 2011 by former club captain Gerard Duffy and ably supported by Catherine Cooke-Harkin and Mary Fowley.

The club have this year introduced renowned P.G.A. Professional Seamus Mc Monagle to oversee the further teaching and development of the club’s juniors and Seamus has just announced that he has two of his junior golfers chosen for the Ulster elite golf coaching academy at u14 level, an academy set up by the G.U.I. to help nurture future protegés of Irish golf.

There are a total of six juniors in the academy at this age group of which Seamus has two prospects chosen.
