Within Northern Ireland Small Business Saturday echoes the Federation of Small Businesses ‘Keep Trade Local’ campaign and also Strabane District Council’s ‘in strabane’ campaign. Cllr Ruairi McHugh, added ‘Strabane District Council wants to celebrate the contribution, small independent businesses make to our local economy and I would encourage people to support them on Small Business Saturday and in the run up to Christmas.’ To highlight Small Business Saturday and encourage consumers to visit both Strabane, Castlederg and Newtownstewart on Saturday 7 December 2013, a number of promotions and events will be taking place. In Strabane and Newtownstewart there will be many special offers for customers and in Castlederg the Castlederg Santa Treasure Trail will commence for 1 week which also coincides with the much looked forward to Christmas light switch event at 4.00 pm on Saturday 7th December 2013. John Friel, Northern Ireland Regional Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses said: ‘Small Business Saturday is a good way to get the message to customers that using your local businesses will benefit the local economy. Indeed without their help these important drivers and suppliers of goods and services in our daily lives may come under threat. Small businesses are the lifeblood of our Local Strabane teenager Tori Loughrey who did fantastic at economy, play a hugely important role in our community ‘Top Model Worldwide Ireland’ - Read it all on page16. and add to the unique character of our locality.’

‘Shop Local’ and support small businesses. The Chairman of Council, Cllr Ruairi McHugh, stated “Small businesses are the heart of our local community, and it’s vital that in the current economic climate we support a major contributor to the economic and social fabric of Strabane district.” The Prime Minister, Mr David Cameron, is supporting the Small Business Saturday initiative, which is being championed by Chukka Umuna, the Shadow Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skill.

Sh. Leonard said: “This is welcome news for traders, who have had a hard time during the recession. Any measure to entice shoppers into the town centre, and to encourage them to stay longer than the normal restricted time frame can only be a good thing. It will allow shoppers to take their time on the high street and spend longer, perhaps, than they normally would.

A special Christmas parking rate of £1 for five hours is to be introduced in 25 towns, including Strabane, across Northern Ireland from December 2 until January 11, and will apply to Road Service car parks that have Cllr. THE FREE ADVERTISING PHENOMENON! Just because your business has a large facebook following doesn’t mean that all your followers are seeing what they should! Read on… In these tough times more and more local companies are looking for cheaper ways to advertise and one of the most popular trends is to open a facebook page and build up the number of followers on it to thousands believing that when you get your numbers up you have access to a huge ‘free’ audience to hit with offers and information to promote your company. Well, think again! This was the case up until about a year ago when facebook decided it had to boost its own revenue through ‘paid for’ advertising. In facebook terms this is known as ‘Reach’. What it basically means is that if you have say 5,000 followers on your facebook page and you post an offer, it will hit only less than 10% of your followers around 400+, if you want to hit more followers, or the rest of your followers, you have to pay for ‘Reach’ to reach them! The price goes up for the more followers you want to reach!

Some can go over 10% but this only happens when something amusing or interesting gets liked and shared by followers of followers.

Now it seems, when you want make a post you have an option to ‘Boost’ your post but you are charged advertising rates and there is no guarantee that your posts will be seen anyway as they just appear as a sponsored link, and we found most people just scroll down to check on their friends updates So you are paying to reach your own fol- rather than read adverts. lowers after months or possibly years of running promotions. Strabane teen is awarded ‘Most Improved Model’ at Top Model Worldwide Ireland

Tori is the Cat-Walk Teen-Queen A Strabane teenager had a very successful day at an all-Ireland model search competition held on Friday, November 22. Tori Loughrey participated at Top Model Worldwide Ireland, which was held at Brownlow House, Lurgan. The competition saw girls from Northern and Southern Ireland, aged 16-26 and non-Irish girls resident in Ireland for three years or more participate. From over 100 entries, 20 girls were selected by auditions for the final. Tori was judged to be the ‘Most Improved Model’ over the day including rehearsals. Her prize is a photo-shoot by Finesse Photography. It also proved to be the perfect conclusion to what was a very successful few weeks for the Strabane teen, who was still buzzing when she spoke to the ‘Herald’ last week. “I won ‘Miss British Empire Junior’ at a beauty competition at the Village Inn, Omagh, the week before but when I heard my name called out for ‘Most Improved Model’ in Lurgan I was so surprised. It was a long day but an unreal experience,” explained Tori.

On the day, the budding models were put through their paces by English model, Lizzie Elliott, who gave them advice and tips, all of which Tori found to be very useful.

I’d love to get to London sometime and I’m under no illusions – I know it’s a competitive business and there’s a lot of hard work involved but I’m willing to put the work in

“I’d definitely love to have a career in modelling. I’m certainly going to keep pushing myself forward in 2014, entering various competitions and getting my portfolio out there. I’d love to get to London sometime and I’m under no illusions – I know it’s a competitive business and there’s a lot of hard work involved but I’m willing to put the work in,” she stressed.

Strabane’s Tori Louhgrey

And with exams looming, Tori is making sure she hits the books along with the cat-walk. “I’m so busy at the moment and school is important too. At times it’s hard to balance both but I make a point of it as I wouldn’t miss school, so the modelling has to work around it,” she explained. Sponsors of Top Model Worldwide Ireland included:

Damian motors on the road to Success!

Students of the Motor Vehicle Studies Group with their tutor Dominic Graham.

A delighted Damien pictured with Grainne Duffy, Head of Senior Department at Knockavoe.

Knockavoe pupil Damian Millar has bid farewell to the ‘L-plates’, having just passed his driving test. After recently passing his theory test along with a fellow Knockavoe pupil, Damien went on to take his practical driving test in Omagh on the morning of Thursday, November 21 and returned back to school victorious before the afternoon. Damian, along with a number of other pupils, has been studying Motor Vehicle Studies,

under the tutelage of Mr Dominic Graham – a course which has been of major benefit to the pupils, according to Head of the Senior Department at Knockavoe, Grainne Duffy. “The course has been taught in the school for the past three years and the pupils are really dedicated to it. We were kindly donated a moped bike courtesy of the DOE, which has been a valuable asset in assisting with the studies. The course focuses on important issues such as road safety, the Highway Code, preparing for tax, MOT,

insurance etc. All the necessary checks on the bike are also looked into. While learning to drive is the ultimate goal, all the aspects surrounding vehicle maintenance are equally as important and this course has helped the pupils involved become very aware of what’s required,” explained Grainne.

the theory and practical tests,” he said.

A delighted Damien spoke of how much he enjoyed the course. “It was a big help and it was really good to learn about things like tax and MOT and all the other things we need to know alongside

“It goes to prove what a great success the Motor Vehicle Studies course has been for both the school and the pupils. We are all delighted for Damian and hoping for similar success in the future,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Grainne Duffy explained that a number of other pupils are about to undertake their theory tests with the hope of then progressing to the practical test in the near future.

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise - one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the

Cecil Gaines was a sharecropper’s son who grew up in the 1920s as a domestic servant for the white family who casually destroyed his. Eventually striking out on his own, Cecil becomes a hotel valet of such efficiency and discreteness in the 1950s that he becomes a butler in the White House itself. There, Cecil would serve numerous US Presidents over the decades as a passive witness of history with the American Civil Rights Movement gaining momentum even as his family has troubles of its own. As his wife, Gloria, struggles with her addictions and his defiant eldest son, Louis, strives for a just world, Cecil must decide whether he should take action in his own way.

Pat Completes 34th Dublin Marathon, Aged 76

Castlederg ‘Marathon Man’, Pat O’Loughlin has completed his 34th Dublin Marathon at the age of 76. The veteran sportsman was running to raise funds for MS research and is the only runner from Northern Ireland and one of 26 runners world-wide to have completed all 34 Dublin marathons. The ‘Herald’ caught up once again with the retired Jeweller last week to look back on his latest 26.2 mile epic run. “I have it all worked down to the very second,” he laughed. ““I came in at five hours, 47 minutes and 46 seconds. I was joined once again by my running partner, Jenny McMenamin, who, as always, has been a great support in training and in taking on the marathon itself. We were joined by her cousin Grace, who was running in memory of her father and heart research.” Completing the team effort, and for joining his dad on the Dublin Marathon for the first time, was Pat’s son, Ciaran. “Everyone did very well. We all ran the whole thing together and finished together. Everything went perfectly. We were so lucky with the weather. There was bad weather at the weekend coming up to it but come the Monday the sky was blue and the sun was shining, thankfully,” explained Pat.

MS Research While Pat has been running the Dublin marathon for various charities since it began back in the late 70s, he has been running to raise funds for MS research since 2000. “My friend, John Doherty has a son with MS. Back in 2000 John was running a dance to raise some funds for research. We got talking about the dance and I asked when it was on. When he told me that it

Pat O’Loughlin, pictured at the ripe old age of 76 has just completed his 34th Dublin marathon and was joined by family and friends inlcuding his son Ciaran and running partner Jenny McMenamin. Jenny’s cousin Grace was also running in memory of her father. Pat ran to raise unds for MS and completed the marathon in 5 hours and 47 minutes.

would be around Halloween I realised that I would be running the Dublin marathon then as well, so it made sense for me get a sponsor sheet and add the funds I raised to the funds raised at the dance. The public response was amazing both locally and further afield in places like Belfast. And this year, as always, the people around Castlederg have been more than generous. It’s quite overwhelming. There’s a lot of good people here across the community,” smiled Pat. Since he started running the marathon in aid of MS research 13 years ago Pat has now raised over £50,000. He hopes to

continue raising funds next year as long as he’s capable of completing the course. “I’ll have to see how the joints, the hips and everything else hold up,” he laughed. “I probably will do it again next year. I’ll be 77 next time around so I suppose it’s good to have your health. I owe that to my wife, Philomena, who takes good care of me and has me on all the right diets to prepare for a marathon. But people are amazing. You couldn’t believe how good people are. It’s not me who raises the money, it’s the people who come to me and offer donations. You couldn’t beat the local people here in Castlederg for charity.”

5 Rules for a Successful Tax Return – from JMD 25 MELLON ROAD BT78 5QU OMAGH

TEL 028 8166 1924 EMAIL: mellonfunfarm@hotmail.com

In Search of Santa...

Hi all, we’re suddenly in the final run-up to Christmas. It’s a busy time of year for everyone with countless errands and for many business owners one of the busiest months of the year. Furthermore, you, the Self-Assessment taxpayer has the added pressure of the January Tax deadline. This can be a worry for many, with speculation on the final liability and the anticipation of what the liability will mean for you and your business in 2014. I’ve laid out 5 key guidelines to completing your Tax Return and some ways you can assist in keeping your liability to a minimum. I hope these small pointers eases any anxiety for some of you and leads to a stress free Christmas. 1. Provide Complete and Accurate Information. Don’t leave figures off the Tax Return. Make sure to include all sources of income e.g. Deposit Interest and Dividends from your Bank, Credit Union or any other accounts. Also make sure to claim relief for Gift Aid on any qualifying donations you made during the year. 2. Include all Receipts. Be certain to gather every receipt relevant to your business or trade as often profits are over-

stated as a result of missing or lost receipts. The effect of overstated profits is paying more tax than you ought to be paying. 3. Be Organised. Keep your books and records up to date. Last minute panicking leads to careless errors. 4. Give your records to your Accountant on time. If you wish to avoid unnecessary interest and penalties from HM Revenue & Customs, don’t leave it to the last week in January to visit your accountant with your books. Whilst every effort will be made to submit your Tax Return before the deadline you are responsible for providing the information in good time. 5. Know what you are doing. If you decide to submit your own Self-Assessment Tax Return to HMRC make sure you know what you are doing. Mistakes are expensive. If you are unsure what to do get help from an accountant. It’s important to note that since regulations were altered at the beginning of 2013, any Self-Assessment Returns filed after 31 January each year they are due will incur an immediate £100 penalty whether any tax is owing or not. I’ll sign off by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year in 2014. Joanne. 22:51

I’ve met some of you already in recent weeks during my visits to my grottos and I’ve taken a note of what you’ve asked for. The Elves, Mrs Claus and I have being going through all your letters also and been working away here in Lapland to get all your special presents ready. I’ve been doing this a long time...ask your mum and dad; even ask your granny and granda they’ll tell you too, ho-ho-ho, and when they were all good little boys and girls, just like you, the toys we made for them were very different to the toys many of you ask for today. But the joy we get in making children happy at Christmas has always been the same! The Elves have been testing some of your bikes and your computer games just to make sure they work ok and I have to say, Mrs Claus and I have a hard job getting them to put them down because they are so enjoyable to play. You’re going to have so much fun playing with your new toys and I can’t wait to bring them to you. Mrs Claus will be glad when those of you who are getting Karaoke machines finally get them on Christmas morning because I have been testing them out myself and she thinks I’m a very, very bad singer. I think she thinks she’s Simon Cowell...ho-ho-ho. In fact, I think I’m a great singer and I should join One Direction, what do you think boys and girls? Ho-ho-ho! Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen can’t wait to get to Strabane & Donegal again. They just love flying over the ‘Tinnies’ on the way to all your houses and I look forward to seeing your new Christmas lights, which I know are going to be beautiful. I also look forward to the little treats you leave out for me. Christmas Eve is a long night for me so a nice glass of milk is always nice. I also like cookies but don’t tell Mrs Claus...ho-ho-ho. Anyway, I hope you have a Merry Christmas boys and girls and a wonderful 2014. I’m off now to sing One Direction’s ‘Best Song Ever’ on the Karaoke. I might even try ‘X-Factor’ next year I’m so good...ho-ho-ho. I better go now as Mrs Claus is covering her ears.

Merry Christmas, Your good friend,

Santa Claus.

Lou Reed: NYC Man Tributes to Lou Reed from journos and musos the world over have filled endless column inches since the moment he sadly passed away on October 27. Being a monthly column, we may be coming late to the table but in reality it could be a years later and a tribute would still be valid, such was the impact Reed had on the musical landscape since 1967. That was the year his band, The Velvet Underground, released their debut album, ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’: a blunt needle from the dirty underworld of New York City that pierced a hole into the contrasting ‘wear some flowers in your hair’ ideology of the West Coast. While Scott McKenzie and the Mamas and Papas were descending upon California for ‘the summer of love’, Lou Reed with the Velvets spoke of a more sinister world, with songs as ragged and awesome as ‘Venus In Furs’, ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’ and ‘Heroin’, introducing a seedy world of drug abuse, prostitution, sadism and masochism and sexual deviancy. It was dangerous, it was bold and rubbed shoulders with moments of tenderness like the beautiful ‘Femme Fatale’ with Nico’s abrupt vocal and the timelessly hazy opener ‘Sunday Morning’. With a few line-up changes and in-house tensions that would persist between the band members for the next few decades, Reed made four great studio albums with the Velvets, creating a sound that stood out as a raw clash of viola and guitar with all sorts of strange tunings consciously going on, in many ways inventing punk long before punk existed. To this day that debut album continues to inspire both young musician and young music listener alike. For those who got it, it became a musical epiphany moment, a sound to embrace. The future remained unwritten but you knew which side you were on and how we happily dived into that world and the music it inspired! In a 1982 interview Brian Eno made the often repeated statement that while

the first Velvet Underground album may have sold only 30,000 copies in its early years, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.”

Solo Years Reed’s solo years were as adventurous and as challenging as his time with the Velvets. Never one to look backwards and with no penchant for formula, nostalgia or repetition he would go on to make records that would delight, baffle, captivate and frustrate. His second solo endeavour, ‘Transformer’, was co-produced by David Bowie and his Spider from Mars cohort, Mick Ronson. It was a commercial success with a casual glam swagger and a couple of beautiful piano led ballads in the shape of ‘Perfect Day’ and ‘Satellite Of Love’, with Ronson’s lush string arrangements and Bowie’s layered wall of backing vocals taking Reed into strange global chart territory. On the same album was the sweetly lethargic ‘Walk on the Wild Side’, which focuses on many of Reed’s underground transgender associates in New York, with taboo imagery of experimentation and sexual activity rife throughout the song. Surprisingly the song escaped the censors and became a massive hit on both sides of the Atlantic – Herbie Flowers’ timeless bass-line perhaps hypnotising the censors in such a way that they missed the blatant references to oral sex – good man Herbie!

Lou Reed’s body of work is sure to inspire musicians for generations to come.

written. It’s a tough record, a bleak record yet remains cathartic and beautiful in its own way. Indeed, the only truly depressing thing about the record would be someone’s inability to find a warmth in something as decadent as ‘Sad Song’. It was the work of an artist unshackled. Reed continued to push forward through the decades with challenging records such as ‘Metal Machine Music’, which personally was a challenge too great for me, ‘Street Hassle’ and ‘Magic and Loss’. New York City remained his muse throughout these years; a New York that was a far cry from the one we may be familiar with today. Yet Reed found poetry in the dark, dirty streets, subways and Reed followed ‘Transformer’ with ‘Berlin’, often undergrowth of the city, and in its rich, its poor and cited as one of the most depressing records ever in the contrasting lives of both. Musical arrange-

ments veered from expansive to the simplistic. He once famously quipped, “One chord is fine. Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you’re into jazz!” In fact, so much more remains to extract from Lou Reed’s work as time trudges onwards. I still don’t get ‘Metal Machine Music’ and I doubt I’ll ever see the point of that Metallica collaboration, yet you’ve got to admire the nerve! In conclusion, Lou Reed has left us with a powerful body of work. The city that never sleeps has one eye closed for now but as long as there are people walking their own path, even on the wild side if needs be, following their own instincts, often in the face of those who try to persuade otherwise, there will always be a bit of Lou Reed’s spirit on the boulevard.

This is not a love song. Recently, while munching over Sunday dinner, the radio was on in the background and on came what was deemed to be a “slow-set” of tunes. My ears perked up, as readers of this column would understand, given that I recently bemoaned the sad passing of the “slow-set” on a night out. In fact, having recently attended a wedding, I’ve concluded that the only time any of us will ever experience a “slow-set” in the future will be our first wedding dance, if we ever decide to take the plunge or, in some cases, take the plunge again! Anyway, as the “slow-set” on the radio got into motion that Sunday, the first song almost made me require the Heimlich manoeuvre; such was the misplacing REM: The One I Love? of the song. That song was ‘The One I Love’ by R.E.M.. Firstly, given its tempo, its standing as a slow-song has to be questioned. Lyrically, though, it starts off on a solid footing: “This one goes out to the one I love.” Lovely! It seems young Stipe (well he was still in his 20s at the time!) is opening his heart to that special someone in his life. It continues, “This one goes out to the one I’ve left behind.” Well, that’s a strange second line! Why leave him or her behind? Line three lays it down: “A simple prop to occupy my time.” Well plant me next to

Chevy Chase and call me Al - this is no love song! It’s anything but a love song. This is a song of abandonment, dumping, getting the old heave-ho. Those lyrics certainly do not conjure up feelings of romantic splendour. Stipe’s screams of “Fire!” in the chorus merely reinforce the treachery at play here. The R.E.M. frontman has been on record as saying that he felt the song was so nasty he was initially hesitant about recording it. In 1988, he told ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine that the song was “incredibly violent” and added, “It’s very clear that it’s about using people over and over again” – hardly the song to pick for your first dance at a wedding, yet many have! So what other misinterpreted ‘love songs’ are out there? What other wedding songs have seen guests awkwardly fiddle with their ties as the happy couple stare lovingly into each other’s eyes, Every Breath you take? singing the words to a song that is so out of place for that moment? How about ‘Every Breath You Take’ by The Police? On the surface it sounds like a harmless song of devotion over the chords to ‘Stand by Me’. Crack the surface and it’s not so pleasant. The lyrics are the words of a sinister, controlling character, who is watching you! Discussing the song on BBC Radio 2, Sting said, “I think

the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it’s quite the opposite.” On the issue of the song he has also said that he was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. Just what every couple wants on their big day! Fleetwood Mac famously had an internal relationship meltdown and a creative purple patch all at the same time in the mid-70s while writing and recording their classic album ‘Rumours’. As a beautiful sounding slice of middle-of-the-road rock the songs within ‘Rumours’ are always in danger of being misinterpreted, like ‘Go Your Own Way’ – a couple’s relationship breakdown with the bonus of a snide accusation that “shacking up is all you wanna do”. And yet it fills many a dancefloor still to this day! Also on the ‘Rumours’ album is the beautiful Christine McVie ballad ‘Songbird’, where “the songbirds keep singing, like they know the score”. What score? Is it the score between Christine and her bass playing soon-to-be ex-husband John? Perhaps the score could have been balanced with the song ‘You Make Loving Fun’, if it wasn’t about the band’s lighting director, Curry Grant, with whom Christine was having an affair at the time! The late Whitney Houston’s version of ‘I Will Always Love You’ was unavoidable in the 90s, with its constant airplay cementing it as one of the ultimate love songs to grace a first dance at a wedding. Lost in Houston’s vocal acrobatics, however, was the fact that the song is about a break up, albeit a business one. It was originally written and

I will always love you - Boss!

recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973. Dolly wrote the song for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was professionally splitting at the time. Given the royalties generated by the song, I’m guessing Dolly doesn’t worry too much about the misinterpretation, and in truth, she shouldn’t. In fact, misinterpreting these songs is every listener’s right. When a piece of music is released into the public it becomes the public’s property to consume and engage with as they please. If they get the artist’s objectives wrong, it shouldn’t really matter. Music would be a very sterile thing if it wasn’t open to various interpretations. If someone is happy to share a clinch with a loved one to a song originally about a stalker, who has the right to argue? With ‘Every Breath You Take’ estimated to generate between a quarter and a third of Sting’s music publishing income, I’m sure he doesn’t dwell on it too much.

The Chrysalis Cove Sinead Lynch Certified Angel Card Reader, Integrated Energy Therapy Practioner

Usui Reiki Master/Teacher

What are Angel Card Readings?

What is Integrated Energy Therapy (IET)? Integrated Energy Therapy (IET) is healing with the Angels and its one of the next generation, power energy therapy systems that gets “the issues out of your tissues” for good. IET was developed at the Centre of Being by Stevan J. Thayer (Reiki Master & Author of the book ‘Interview with an Angel’.) IET uses the Violet Angelic Ray brought to us by the nine healing Angels of the energy field to work directly with our 12 strand spiritual DNA IET is a channeled energy and the Practioner is a vessel through which this Angelic energy is channeled for the purpose of healing. IET supports you in safely and gently releasing limiting energy patterns of your past, empowering and balancing your life in the present and helps you reach for the stars into your future.

What causes energy blocks within the body?

Angel Card Readings are a powerful tool for those seeking guidance and direction in their life. Angel Cards give accurate insight into relationships, careers finances & life purpose.

As we journey through life the flow of energy can become restricted or limited. These restrictions are known as blocks. Some causes of energy blocks are, physical trauma, surgery, disease, exhaustion, starvation, emotional crisis, suppressed feelings, stress, fear, self-limiting beliefs, and karma. Energy blocks limit our experience of life, and Angel Card Readings tap into the Angelic can result in lack of spontaneity/procrastinarealm to help guide the client through deci- tion, energy depletion, mental and spiritual sion and choice making and a reading will well- being. frequently confirm the client’s thoughts, feelings about a particular situation. Meet & Greet Your Angels Evenings New to The Chrysalis Cove starting Friday Jan 14th is the introduction of Monthly Meet & Greet Your Angels Evenings. These are a series of 7 monthly Evenings dedicated to 2/3 of The 15 Miraculous Archangels. These Evenings will include • Learning who the Archangels are & how to connect with them on a deep level. • Archangel Invocations & Meditations • The importance of grounding when connecting with the vibration of the Archangels • Understanding The Archangels, their role, associated colour and how to sense their presence in your life. • Your own Angel God box & associated laminated Angel Card as a free gift.

What is Reiki? Reiki is an ancient laying on of hands healing technique that uses life force energy to heal and balance subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. This healing art is an extremely powerful and effective delivery system and the Practioner serves a vessel that channels healing energies wherever they are most needed.

Level 3 (Master Level)

This is an attunement based workshop delivered by a Reiki Master Teacher. This Attunement enables the student to receive and channel Divine energy of Reiki. During the workshop the students will learn the history of Reiki, treatment hand positions & the techniques of self- healing. The student will be encouraged to give healing on a non-professional basis to friends, family & pets until he/she obtains a Level 2 certification.

This is also an attunement based energy and as a student accepting The Master energy you will have already been through profound experiences on your own spiritual path to arrive at this point. At this level students embark on an amazing journey to higher and higher energies and the refinement of their soul. More symbols are introduced at this level and after having successfully balanced the new energies of level 1 and 2 the healing moves even deeper into the subtle emotional and spiritual bodies. The student at this level will be presented with ‘old stuff’ from the past that needs to be addressed in order for him/her to move along their spiritual journey. The Master Degree attunement will raise vibrational frequencies even higher bringing even greater changes of consciousness. On the box this Christmas... This month’s ‘Total Telly’ becomes, unsurprisingly, ‘Total Christmas’ as we delve into some of the televisual highlights that will be on your screen over the festive season. The first big news about this year’s line-up is that there will be no ‘Royle Family’ Christmas Special. The 2012 special of the show aired on Christmas Day and was watched by 9.9 million people. Despite the high viewership, opinion on the special was divided, many thinking it was a worthy festive highlight, others thinking that the show had now well and truly ‘jumped the shark’. At ‘Total Telly’ here, we stand with the latter, finding little joy in the absurd match-making antics of Barb, Jim, Dave and Denise for boring old next door neighbour Joe. In fact, ‘The Royle Family’ has lacked any of the northern warmth that was its forte for some time now. Not since the classic ‘Queen of Sheba’ episode in 2006, where we tearfully said goodbye to ‘Nana’, has the show hit the target, with the writing becoming weaker and more complacent by the year. Thankfully we’ll be spared the now formulaic ‘Christmas, my arse’ from Jim Royle this year.

Open All Hours What we will have this year is ‘Still Open All Hours’, with David Jason returning to play Granville, the long suffering errand boy of miserly shopkeeper Arkwright, who was played by the legendary Ronnie Barker between 1973 and 1985 across four series. The new edition Granville (David Jason) will see Granville running the corner shop with his son, following the death of Arkwright. Lynda Baron, who starred as busty Nurse Gladys Emmanuel will also return, along with Maggie Ollerenshaw, who starred as dithering customer Mavis. While the idea of a return to ‘Open All Hours’ will have many intrigued, one can’t help but wonder if it’s the sign of desperation. Remember when ‘To the Manor Born’ returned for Christmas 2007? No, us neither! However, unlike ‘To the Manor Born’, ‘Open All Hours’ actually was

‘haunted’ manor house. Is blacksmith’s daughter Rose Wilton seeking revenge from the beyond the grave or can Barnaby and Nelson find a more earthly motive behind the murder and trap the killer? Guest stars in the episode include Elizabeth Berrington, Les Dennis, Mark Heap, Emily Joyce, James Murray and Hannah Tointon.

You will have numerous chances to catch, or indeed avoid the ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ Christmas Special on BBC and RTE on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Midsomer Murders It will be a time of joy and happiness in Midsomer for once – Christmas is coming and DCI Barnaby is about to become a dad. As ‘Midsomer Murders’ returns to ITV, Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his wife Sarah (Fiona Dolman) are celebrating the news that she is pregnant. The festive Midsomer Murders episode, “The Christmas Haunting”, is set in Morton Shallows. DCI Barnaby and DS Nelson investigate the fatal stabbing of a man (the joy and happiness lasted a long time, didn’t it?) with an antique sword during a ghost-hunting party at a

As for movies, well we don’t have to wait for any official announcements; we know what to look forward to this Christmas. ‘Santa Claus – the Movie’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Miracle On 34TH Street’ and any number of ‘Harry Potter’ movies are compulsory additions to the festive schedules. And as with every other Christmas we’ll sit and watch George Bailey joyfully run down the main street of Bedford Falls wishing everybody a Merry Christmas in ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’. We’ll also be spoiled for choice as the story of Ebenezer Scrooge will be re-told many times over, with our personal favourites to look out for being the wonderful 1970 musical film version starring Albert Finney and 1988’s ‘Scrooged’ starring the brilliant Bill Murray at his deadpan best.

True Christmas Movies

Meanwhile, True Movies 1 has been rebranded as True Christmas for the festive season. The channel can be found on Sky 321 and Virgin Media 424. It features nothing but heart-warming Christmas themed movies throughout the season to get you in the mood, such as the delightful ‘The Man Who Saved Christmas’, based on the true story of toymaker Alfred Carlton Gilbert (portrayed by ‘Seinfeld’ star Jason Alexander) of the A. C. Gilbert Company as he strives to continue making toys during World War I, despite being requested by the ‘Nan’ (starring Catherine Tate) government to re-tool his factory to help produce Obviously there’s the soaps to contend with as goods for the war effort. 2014 Strabane St Patrick’s Day Meetings Schedule The first meeting of the 2014 Strabane St Patrick’s Day Committee took place just a few short weeks ago. This year will be the 9th consecutive parade. Now is the time to start thinking and planning for entering a float or walking group in this year’s parade. The pupils of Knockavoe recently had a ‘Pajama Day’ and raised £221.70 towards aid in the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan has left at least 10,000 people dead in the central Philippine province of Leyte. It was one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall, causing immeasurable damage to the area and coastal towns. The Student Council at Knockavoe held a number of meetings to discuss fundraising ideas and the

pupils themselves brought forward the idea to raise funds for those who were affected by the typhoon in the Philippines. It was agreed that on Thursday, November 21, pupils and staff would have a ‘Pajama Day’. A lovely leisurely Thursday was had with vital funds raised for a very important cause.

of walking routes throughout the forest, opening up some of the old routes and introducing new ones. This will give the public greater access to the wonderful natural resource that is currently massively under-used. Cllr Mc Guire continued, ‘I welcome Council pursuing this issue, a lot of work has went into this project by council officials and DARD officials in getting a Memorandum of Understanding to allow this wonderful asset on our doorsteps to be utilised by the public. This I believe has the potential to bring many tourists to this area for visiting and recreational purposes and also opens up the possibility of future trails for cycling and mountain biking’

Christmas and gifts ...write your own story!

Workshops & Seminars

Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat Please to put a penny in the old man’s hat; If you haven’t got a penny, a ha’penny will do, If you haven’t got a ha’penny then God bless you! Christmas is traditionally a time for giving and receiving gifts. Many of us like to give and receive. What happens however when you give something and receive nothing in return? How do you feel? What happens when you receive a gift you don’t particularly like or value? Do you remember someone who did not return a Christmas card to you last year or the year before? Are they still on your Christmas card list this year? I remember sending Christmas cards to old friends, not receiving one in return and wondering if they were still alive or were they unwell. I then felt awkward about whether I should get in touch with them or not as I was afraid of making them feel uneasy about my knowing they had not sent me a Christmas card.

What complicated beings we are. I can also recall receiving a gift from someone close that I did not particularly like. I felt undermined and angry. I looked at the gift as a reflection of what that person thought of me and was none too pleased. I did however accept the gift graciously and complained to myself for some time. I have also bought gifts for loved ones knowing that they just hated my choice of gift for them. Now that made me feel really good. Can you imagine how I felt when my loved one accepted the gift when I knew their true feelings about it? Not good.

year I pick up many clues about their likes and dislikes and choose accordingly. Sometimes I do something for someone as a gift and that is very often appreciated. I have also in the past made things for loved ones like a CD for some complaint or other I know they suffer from and that too usually goes down well as the time and effort to producing such can be considerable. However I know I can still get it so wrong. So wrong in fact that in the past it has prevented me from choosing a gift at all. Often I give my loved ones money to choose something for themselves. I find that works too. Some time ago however I realized that all the stress around picking the ‘right’ present for a loved one was all my doing. I was getting myself into a tizzy and did not know what to do about it. After much deliberation I came to the momentous conclusion that I would ask them what they wanted and see how that worked. I explained that I was going to get them something anyway and it would be much better if it was something they wanted, needed or simply would like to have. This strategy works too however, like me, you will find that no one strategy works for everyone I still love to give people gifts however I am all of the time. And that’s all right too. more careful with my choices. Have a lovely Christmas. If it is someone I know well throughout the Tom Herron To Advertise 71 419514(NI) or 048 71 419514 (From ROI)

The path to fitness in the Ballycolman Down the years, a walk into the Ballycolman Industrial Estate was the road to work. Today it is now the road to fitness and good health courtesy of Vaidas Adomaitis and his Fit Fast Gym. Established in January of this year, the gym was an idea that developed after Vaidas, from Crossroads, Killygordon, was made unemployed. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ as we visited his top of the range gym in Ballycolman, he explained to us how it all began. “I was working as a lorry driver but then the credit crunch hit and next thing I know I’m out of a job. At that point I decided to take up a fitness instructor course at the University of Limerick. After that I began personal training in Portlaoise, which took eight months to complete. There, I discovered so much about nutrition and exercises. I then worked for almost a year in Michael Bond’s gym before deciding to go out and try it on my own. So far, I have to say, it’s been a pretty good move,” he says. Vaidas agrees that with times being what they are and with so few jobs out there, going out and trying to set something up yourself is always an option to consider. “I applied for a number of fitness jobs and was unsuccessful so I thought why not try it myself,” he explains. Indeed the timing could not have been better

Vaidas with Gavin McNamee who trains at the gym.

as fitness and good health seems to be a growing trend in Strabane and, indeed, other towns across the country right now. Can Vaidas explain this sudden craze? “Health and fitness has become a big thing in Strabane. There are so many Boot Camps happening and people are really interested in their personal well being. I have no idea for sure as to why it has taken off like it has. Maybe people are realising how much bad food there is in the shops so they want to balance it out with exercise. Loads of people exercise and then go to the supermarket and buy poor quality food because the good stuff is unfortunately very expensive. There is a convenience

in frozen food and chippy food. It’s cheap and less time consuming as you don’t have to cook, so it suits those with a busy lifestyle but it’s not healthy. It’s important to remember that you can exercise all you want but you’ll not see any visual benefits if your diet is poor. For success in that respect, exercise is 30 percent and diet is 70 percent,” Vaidas stresses. So what can the Killygordon man, originally from Lithuania, offer someone caught up in the cycle of a ‘rubbish in, rubbish out’ diet, who wants to both be and look fitter and healthier? “I can give advice or offer personal training to help you achieve your goals, be it weight loss, toning, bulking up, getting ripped, increase fitness or just to maintain your fitness. I’m presently almost at the end of a nutritionist course, so I can offer the clients a personal diet plan to follow. I can also offer a transformation package, which entails five personal training sessions, a diet plan and an exercise plan,” he tells us. Already Vaidas has seen the results in a number of clients since he started in January, with many of his success stories photographed and up on the wall for all to see at the gym. He also had great personal success in September at the NIFMA Fitness Modelling Championships at La Mon Hotel, Castlereagh, scoring a trio of wins: the Mr Athletic title; second place in Mr Physique and third in Mr Body Art (all in the over

30s category). Last month he participated in the NIFMA Mr and Miss World Championships in Dublin, finishing second in the Formalwear and Mr Physique categories. Naturally, preparation for these events is not without its challenges. “Preparing for the championships was so hard,” he reflects. “I trained for 13 weeks. It is hard work and no short cuts should ever be advised. You need to have the head to go the distance and also have people supporting you while you are doing it. During my training my moods would change when running low on carbohydrates and I’d become very tired and a little cranky, so a support network is important. Thanks to everyone who helped and supported me, including all my clients at the gym.” As for the Fit Fast Gym, Viadas would advise those who kept a good eye on their health and fitness during the summer period not to let it slip as the cold weather and dark evenings loom upon us. “With Christmas approaching people tend to ease up a little and wait until the new year to start with the fitness again. There’s no reason not to maintain the fitness levels over the next few months. We have the facilities right here,” he enthuses. For further information about Fit Fast Gym, check out the Facebook page: facebook.com/FitFastGym or telephone 07526824066.

Vaidas had recent success at the NIFMA Fitness Modelling Championships in Castlereagh. He won the Mr Athletic title was econd place in Mr Physique and third in Mr Body Art (all in the over 30s category).

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats The Herald speaks to a son or daughter of Strabane, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond Strabane we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for Strabane and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Chris McLaughlin. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I left Strabane back in February 2011 for sunny Australia. I’ve been residing in Sydney for over two years now, just a short stroll from the famous Bondi Beach. What’s it like for a Strabane man where you are now? Awh Bondi is a great place to live for a ‘Strabanimal’. You’ve got the lovely weather, the beach, vibrant cafes and restaurants, great shopping and an Irish bar is never too far away for when the weekend rolls round. The job opportunities are endless as well because the Aussies are always looking for hard working Irish men and women.

Where in Strabane did you grow up? I grew up in the best housing estate in Strabane, which is Lisnafin Park. The memories I have of that place are endless and I couldn’t have grown up in a better place. Some top quality people hail from that estate and I wouldn’t change it for the world. We always had the biggest bonfire every Halloween haha.

and nephews that I haven’t even met yet so that’s difficult. Aside from that I miss being able to call into Dicey Riley’s for a pint and watch my beloved Man Utd play. Something Strabane has that your new home doesn’t have. You don’t realise it until you move away from Strabane but there are lots of things that the town has to offer that you don’t get anywhere else in the world. One thing though is the close-knit, friendly community spirit that exists in Strabane which is second to none. As I worked in places like Asda and Spar I came across some of the friendliest and nicest people you could not find anywhere else in the world.

A great memory of Strabane. There are so many great memories of Strabane but the ones that stick out the most would be the St Patricks Day parades when I was a kid, watching Ireland compete in the 2002 World Cup, the friendly people you pass by on the street every day, working in Asda, playing football for hours on end in What’s Christmas in the summer like? the street and probably Katy Daly’s back in What important factors do you think Christmas just isn’t the same in summer the day. anyone thinking of moving abroad time. When you’re so used to Christmas should consider? being cold and snowy it’s hard to get into Something you miss about Strabane? I would definitely recommend moving the festive spirit when its 30 degrees and There are many things that I miss about abroad, even for just a few years to expethe sun is splitting the rocks. I definitely my hometown but the most important one rience living in a different climate and culprefer Christmas in winter and I always would be my family and friends who I left ture. Factors to consider would be to do it wonder how Santa lands his sleigh when behind. Things like Skype have enabled me with friends, as I came over here with four there’s no snow? He must park it on the to keep in contact but it doesn’t compare friends from Strabane and it made it a lot beach I reckon. to chatting to them in person. I have nieces easier as we kept each other on the straight

and narrow. Other factors include having enough money to keep you going until you find work, vaccinations, having the correct visa. Also, be prepared to talk slower so people can understand you. Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? Yes I think I will eventually return home to live in Strabane in the future. Even though there’s a better quality of life and more job opportunities in Australia, home is home at the end of the day and I dare say there will be a massive party to be had when that day finally arrives, I hear there’s a bottle of Buckfast with my name on it. Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future. Well part of the reason I moved away from Strabane was that there were no good job opportunities available so hopefully we can see some improvement in that area and then maybe some of the hundreds of people who have emigrated over the past few years will return. One of the best things about Strabane. One of the best things about Strabane

Chris McLaughlin

would be that no matter where you are in the world you are guaranteed to bump into someone from the town and even if you barely know them they will always be happy to see a familiar face. Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane? It has to be my Ma’s home cooking as nothing beats it. Then I would get all my mates together and head down to the bar for a session and hopefully catch some of the live musical talent that Strabane has to offer followed by a feed in one of the local chippys because to be honest shrimp doesn’t taste too good when its thrown on the Barbie. G’d Luck!
