TURRAMURRA Why South Turramurra’s longest standing resident is regenerating local bushland.

WHEN Vinko Stibilj arrived in South Turramurra 62 years ago to build a family home, his street was just a dirt track. Now 94 years old, Vinko is the eldest and longest standing resident of Warner Avenue. He has seen the area undergo many transformations over the years, from suburbanisation to major bushfires that threatened his home. a builder, Vinko spends his time every day regenerating By Claire Ollivain theFormerly bushland and creek in the reserve on Nancy Bird Avenue. The thriving greenery that South Turramurra is known for can be partly credited to the work Vinko does out of love for the area. Born to Austrian parents in Ustje, a rural Slovenian town that was occupied by Italy after WW1, Vinko left home at only 16 years old. One night he packed his bag and escaped over the border by himself, his parents fearing that if he stayed he’d be killed at war. Vinko travelled through Italy and worked in a convent for six years before applying to move overseas. “I went to Milan to interview for immigration as what they called a refugee in those days, which meant you never went back home,” Vinko recalled. The trip to Australia was a lengthy one before the time of accessible air travel: Vinko travelled four days on a train to Germany before boarding a ship, which arrived in Melbourne just over a month later. Post-war immigration was booming in 1950. Vinko lived in a tent for six weeks picking grapes in Bonegilla, a migration camp which hosted over 300,000 migrants over 24 years. He then lived in Sydney and Newcastle, working for BHP and in a few places cutting trees before starting his business as a highly regarded local builder. Vinko would go on to build more than 50 homes on the North Shore, retiring only six years ago at 88 years old. “I have always enjoyed working with trees, either building with wood or growing trees,” Vinko said. “I think my grandfather was the instigator as he loved trees and I spent a lot of time with him and his trees.” To this day, Vinko loves being amongst nature, and finds respite in the bushland lying just past the gate in his backyard. “Even after working a full day doing physical building work, my relaxation was hand-watering the trees in the reserve behind my house with buckets,” he said. Part of Vinko’s interest stems from the differences in Australian bushland to that in Central Europe. Turramurra is on the land of the Tarramerragal people and is known for being surrounded by woodland, including pockets of rainforest and tall eucalypt trees. “I find that being outside and even in the bush you get to meet people – although not as many as a few years ago,” he said, speculating that either less people may be going for walks or he is just outside at a different time of day. “My children went to the local schools and were lucky to live in an era to be able to play in a quiet street with the neighbourhood children,” he said. “When they got a bit older there were many bush walks and lots of time exploring the area – the Browns Waterhole walk was very popular! “It is nice to see young families coming back to South Turramurra,” Vinko said fondly. “Hopefully more children will go bushwalking again.”

AFTER they instinctively express their feelings this way, they then “objectively look at what they’ve produced and talk about that, a type of projection,” she explains. “Creating any kind of art is in itself therapeutic and has [been] shown to reduce cortisol and adrenaline levels in the blood.” It’s a combination Rabinowitz has understood for a long time. As a social work student, she would paint pictures for her friends even if the only materials at hand were cheap poster paints, terrible paper and one brush. “It was simply something I felt compelled to do ... a creative instinct,” she says. Since then, she has taken classes and taught herself from YouTube videos. The results are diverse, thanks to her use of different mediums. While she no longer works in oils because of their strong odour and extended drying time, she uses plenty of other materials, including pantry items – “polenta, salt, cinnamon sticks, cake colouring – you name it” – and has a soft spot for inks: “The more I work with them, the more creative I become.” Her wide range of styles and subjects also makes it hard to pin a ‘signature’ on her art. “It all depends on my mood at the time. My creative process is completely random,” she admits. That means anything from a quick painting in one sitting to something

She’s currently in a flower phase. “Their shapes, sizes and colours vary incredibly and each one is fascinating to me. I walk regularly around our area and can often be seen gazing at flowers, pods, seeds and feel a sense of wonderment.” Proximity to nature is one of her favourite things about the neighbourhood – “every visitor who stays with us comments on the peace, the greenery and the bird calls. All these are healthy for one’s psychological state” – and her recommendation for visitors is to take a walk: a bushwalk, a stroll around the streets or a turn in Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden. “With everything seeming gloomy, you cannot look at flowers without feeling uplifted,” she says. It’s an attitude she hopes her art inspires. “Most of my work is upbeat and when people say, ‘your art makes me feel happy’, I am very satisfied.”

MURDER

Lost For 120 Years, Rediscovered By Resident Historian Elliot Lindsay

THE BOTTOM OF A WELL On the morning of Monday the 22nd of September, 1862, on the Greengate estate located in colonial Killara (although all the North Shore was known as Lane Cove in those days), a lifeless male body was found at the bottom of a deep, dark well. The throat of the man had a gaping wound, his arm lacerated. A folded-up pruning knife was found in his pocket with traces of blood on the blade.

T

THE man’s name was Andrew Bromley, a local 43 years old timber cutter. Initially, it was thought Bromley had committed suicide. Perhaps attempting with the blade and then finishing the job by throwing himself in the well to drown. He had been depressed the days before due to a quarrel with his son. The city press, always hungry for a story, didn’t wait for the Coroner’s verdict and printed this unproven detail as fact. The City Coroner finally arrived and held a routine inquest at the local inn to determine the cause of death. However, the Coroner, perhaps assuming he was only attending the scene of an apparent suicide, came unprepared for a murder investigation. In the absence of a suicide note and having observed the neck wounds, the Coroner became doubtful that Bromley had taken his own life. He suspected foul play. The body had to be professionally examined by a medical practitioner. Time was of the essence as the body was in decomposition. He ordered the body be transferred to the North Shore Police Station. UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES The two doctors conducted a thorough investigation of the body. Mr Bromley was found to have had three cuts to his throat, making a wound five inches in length. The first two cuts only penetrated the skin. However, the third cut was fatal, severing the lingual artery, the windpipe and the bone joining the tongue and larynx. The Coroner next undertook a post mortem examination. From the appearance of the

08

TURRAMURRA

internal organs, it was believed the death took place before Mr Bromley’s immersion in the water. When Andrew Bromley was not working in the timber yards, he was employed as a labourer. On Friday the 19th of September, he was working for Mr Thomas Waterhouse, the publican of the Greengate Inn and owner of the Greengate estate. However, a bushfire raging through the surrounding Lane Cove forest had finally reached the local area during the day. Waterhouse required all hands to subdue the fire before it overtook the local properties; already, it had devastated some neighbouring estates. Bromley joined in battling the blazes. At approximately 3 pm that afternoon, Bromley was noticed missing. Still, he had not been seen that evening, and he did not come home to his wife and nine children. Saturday, morning came, and he was still missing. This was out of character for Bromley. By Sunday, the community was alarmed and searched the estate where he was seen last. Mr Waterhouse’s son found the hat he wore, and then dried splatters of blood were discovered next. That trailed off some 240 yards towards a deep water well. Although no sign of Mr Bromley’s body was observed, the men decided to drag it. Their suspicions proved to be correct as emerging from the depths came the waterlogged corpse of Andrew Bromley. Murder was the case. The doctors presented their evidence at the Coroner’s court held at North Shore Police Station. They testified that the wounds would have resulted in death within minutes. Hence, the ability of Mr Bromley to cut his own throat, close the knife, place it into his pocket, and then stumble 270 yards to the water well was near impossible. The jury finally returned the verdict: – “We have no evidence before us to show how his body got into the well, and that great suspicion and mystery attaches to this man’s death.” Thus, the inquest ruled out suicide. With the community in a state of panic and confusion, the fires provided the perfect opportunity for a person to commit murder, primarily as no investigation into Bromley’s whereabouts was undertaken until the Sunday when presumably the fires had occurred subsided in the area. Suspects On Friday 26th of September, law enforcement had a suspect brought before the Water Police Court on Phillip Street, Sydney. Joseph Bromley, Andrew’s seventeen-year-old son, was arrested on suspicion of murdering his father. Andrew and Joseph had been quarrelling over a disagreement in the weeks prior. The police decided to investigate him. Upon inspecting the property where Joseph was employed, they found clothes he had allegedly worn when his father went missing. Suspicious bloodstains were fou nd on the clothes, prompting the police to presume the worst.

HEALTH

TURRAMURRA

To avoid Covid-19 we need a vaccine. But what about 21st Century chronic diseases? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a vaccine? Imagine the difference that would make to the health budget.

O

OBVIOUSLY, that vaccine would need to have some punch behind it to guard against heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis. And it would be good if it could also enable us to lose weight and gain muscle while reducing anxiety and depression. Well guess what? There is such a vaccine! It’s called exercise and we believe you can use exercise as medicine. Doctors often say that if drug companies could put the benefits of exercise into a pill it would make them billions of dollars and no wonder. Jump onto Google, key in just about any condition or complaint you can think of plus the word exercise and we guarantee it’ll be in the list of solutions. It is a pity exercise and commitment to consistent attendance isn’t covered by medicare. The best prescription - did you know: • Regular exercise can significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia by 30 per cent and of Alzheimer’s by 45 per cent. • It’s been shown that sessions of HIIT are particularly effective in reducing colon cancer and reducing cholesterol levels. • Running can prevent age-related macular degeneration. • Just 30 minutes of exercise per week has the potential to significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer. • Exercise can reduce the risk factors of type 2 diabetes and heart disease even in children. It’s also never too late to start as it can reverse damage from heart ageing. • Exercise can be as effective as prescribed drugs to lower high blood pressure. Outdoor exercise, in particular, has been found to be associated with greater decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression and increases in energy and enjoyment.

14

• While it’s well known that exercise will build bone density when younger, the latest research from Australia shows that it can even reverse osteoporosis in older people. • Exercise is one of the most effective treatments for arthritis, helping improve mobility and flexibility of joints, muscle strength, posture and balance. It can decrease pain, tiredness, muscle tension and stress and also control weight which relieves the strain on arthritic joints. • Stroke is the leading cause of disability in Australia and exercise helps prevent it with those in high fitness groups experiencing a 68 per cent lower risk than those who weren’t so active. That’s because it prevents arteries clogging up, lowers blood pressure, improves heart health, stabilises blood sugar and reduces cholesterol. • As we age, we lose muscle; it’s called Sarcopenia and it’s a strong predictor of disability and morbidity and loss of function, independence and quality of life. The only way to prevent it is strength training. • Exercise reduces sleep complaints and insomnia with the effects of aerobic exercise on sleep appearing to be similar to those of sleeping pills. Moderate aerobic exercise is particularly effective at relieving insomnia and increasing the amount of time you spend in deep sleep – the stage where your body restores and replenishes itself, healing your muscles and tissues to prepare for more exercise.

JESS TAYLOR

H

Nestled underneath The Music Lounge on the corner of Eastern Road you’ll find JTaylor Hair, a beautiful salon owned by Jess Taylor, who boasts a 14-year career in the hair industry at only 30 years old.

HOW long have you had your salon in Turramurra and what do you love most about the local community? • I’ve been in Turramurra (at 1a Eastern Rd) for six years now and have absolutely loved every minute. Ever since we opened, I’ve felt so embraced (my favourite thing is everyone always says ‘hello’!) and we support each other. Have you always been a local? Pretty much! I grew up right on the edge of St Ives and Turramurra, living on Bimburra Ave ever since I was born. I also attended PLC, so basically grew up in this part of the North Shore - it was a natural progression to open a salon locally. The majority of my previous jobs were also on the North Shore, so it’s been great to keep in touch with old clients. What can someone expect when visiting JTaylor Hair? The salon has a really tranquil and calming atmosphere. I always try to offer a very personalised, one-on-one experience, so we will only have one person in the salon the majority of the time. I want my clients to come in and leave their worries at the door,

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

so they can really immerse themselves in the experience. Around 90% of my bookings are with clients who I now consider friends aftering looking after their hair for many years! What are some of your greatest accomplishments across your 14 year career? I won Apprentice of the Year in 2009, which was my first year in the industry. I’ve also travelled to LA and New York and worked as a stylist for magazine shoots, which was amazing. Those are all amazing highlights but I think my greatest accomplishment was opening my own salon at 24 (Jtaylor Hair!) You must have some great hair tips - what would be the top three? • Shampoo twice - the first gets rid of dirt/grime, then the second cleanses the scalp and cleans the hair. • Never put conditioner on your roots, only mid-lengths to ends. Your roots already produce oil so you don’t need to add anymore. This will also help you get some more volume. • Always use a heat protection spray/treatment when using any heat tools; hair is at risk of burning and drying out without.

PROMOTING PLANTS TO KIDS AND CREATING LEARNING LANDSCAPES

By Meredith Kirton

Are you concerned that your children have too much exposure to technology and not enough interaction with the natural environment?

M

MANY people are, and lots of studies show that nature play has many benefits, from an increased level of physical activity and subsequent reduced levels of childhood obesity, to increased motor skills, better distance vision, improved balance and increased encounters in problem solving and creative thinking. Simply put, not only does outdoor action improve emotional wellbeing for kids, but it also literally makes them smarter and fitter, and the opposite, known as nature deficit disorder, is a problem for our young people without access to the gardens and wild places. Plants should be taken daily not only in the lunch box and dinner plate, but also in their environment.

16

• Involve your children in selecting and planting your garden so they are invested in the outcomes. • Choose plants that grow easily and have something to offer, like fruits or fragrant flowers. • Plants with textures, smells, sounds, colour and a variety of shapes will make an interesting space for your whole family. • Avoid plants that are poisonous, prickly or have thorns. • Create spaces that are both active for example cycle path ways and hard surfaces for wheels and bouncing balls, as well as quiet spots to sit. • Add a cubby or fort and place it right into the garden to encourage play. • Add a fire pit for big kids and a sandpit for younger kids – it can be the same space and just adapt as the kids grow.

The Conlan College began its life 25 years ago in a local church hall under the direction of its founder Simone Conlan. The studios were moved to Turramurra in the early 2000’s where the teachers trained several world class dancers, along with hundreds of youngsters who just loved to dance.

I

IN 2014, Simone entrusted her life’s work to Susan Anderssen, who, with her dual background in ballet and business, was considered to be the ideal person who could take the college to its next level. When Susan took over Conlan College in 2014, she immediately set about adding flesh to the incredibly good bones that the college possessed. With an emphasis on nurturing each student to achieve their personal best, in an environment where safe dance practice and child protection is paramount, the college has moved from strength to strength in the last 8 years. With six beautiful studios, all with fully-sprung floors and performance-quality Tarkett [specialist floor surfacing], the professionally qualified teachers are able to focus on the individual needs of each student in small classes. Parents are welcomed in the inhouse café where they can relax with a coffee and meet other parents. Since 2014, Conlan College has had several students selected for Prix de Lausanne and the YAGP New York finals. These are the world’s most prestigious ballet competitions where students can be awarded scholarships for internationally-renowned universities and finishing schools. The College also has a 100% success rate for their RAD Solo Seal students, which is the highest level of performance examination offered. The college is unique in Australia, with its warm family feel in both the part-time and full-time programs, which are balanced with the highest possible standard of training. The vast majority of students attend classes after school for the pure joy of dancing and all students, regardless of ability, are warmly welcomed into the Conlan Family. Students can participate in classical ballet, contemporary dance, strength and conditioning, pointe, repertoire and open classes each week. For those very few dancers who have the talent, dedication, drive and passion to follow a career as a professional, Conlan College offers a full time training program in which dancers are trained in classical ballet, contemporary dance, along with allied subjects such as anatomy, choreography, improvisation, nutrition and physiology. The college offers two streams of full time training: YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

• For students in academic years 8-10, the full-time course is offered in conjunction with distance education. • For students in academic years 11 and 12, the college offers a Certificate IV in Dance, followed by an Advanced Diploma in Professional Dance. For students wishing to learn to teach, the college also offers a Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management. One of Susan’s proudest achievements is that Conlan College boasts a 100% placement rate for all full-time graduates since she took over in 2014. This has been due to the rigour of the program being maintained, whilst the nurturing feel is emphasised for all students. With such a hard road to tread, Susan believes that it is her job to support her students to move on to their next step in the dance world. Her impeccable international contacts are utilised to ensure dancers can be seen and assessed by the universities and finishing schools of their choice.

The Conlan College is hosting their whole school production of ‘The Ice Realm’ at the Science Theatre at UNSW on 21 May 2022. Tickets are available from Trybooking from 2 May 2022. conlancollege.com

A message Mayor Jeff Pettett Greetings to St Ives residents! There’s a lot happening in the St Ives area this year and I thought I’d take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about the projects Council is working on. Last month - along with my St Ives ward colleagues Cr Christine Kay and Cr Martin Smith - I checked out the new skate park at St Ives Village Green.

Another new way to have fun in St Ives with the family is the Treetops adventure park at the Showground. If you haven’t yet been to this, then you’re in for a thrill! The adventure park has eight high ropes courses for all ages and skill levels. While you’re there, check out the playground and what it has to offer. It’s currently the largest one in Ku-ring-gai.

The skate park opened in February and even though we’ve had some rain interruptions, there have been a lot of visitors to the park trying out their skills. It’s not just for skateboarders either - mountain bike riders and roller bladers can also enjoy the park. We want everyone to get along and have fun, so please be considerate of other users and respect their skill levels. The skate park is just one of several improvements coming to St Ives Village Green and its surroundings. The idea is to create a youth precinct, making the area more appealing for young families and teenagers. St Ives has a rapidly growing population of young families and we need to plan ahead for their needs. Next to the Village Green we’re building a performance space for community events, a new playground and picnicking areas, which should be ready later in the year. The nishing touches are also being made to renovations at the St Ives community hall and youth centre.

Over in Stanley Street, plans are underway to create a large new park over 8000 square metres in size. This is being done by merging the existing Bedes Forest with extra land acquired through the purchase of three properties. Bedes Forest is currently not very useable, so we’ve prepared two concepts for the new park based on feedback we received from St Ives residents last year. Some of your ideas include a community garden, outdoor gym equipment, a bike track for the kids, a half basketball court and table tennis. We’ve included all those suggestions in two concept designs, which you can comment on till Friday 8 May. We’ll then prepare a nal design for the new park which will go on public exhibition later this year. You can see the designs at krg.engagementhub.com.au/bedesforeststives I’m looking forward to hearing what you think. Jeff Pettett, Mayor of Ku-ring-gai www.facebook.com/KRGMayor

FOOD

TURRAMURRA

We were lucky enough to sit with Joe Avers - ex-Turramurra High student - founder of the juggernaut Super Nash Brothers, a new and very popular fried chicken joint that is making a name for itself across Sydney.

H

HIGH SCHOOL feels like an eternity ago - I know it does for me - what year did you graduate and did you always want to be in the food industry? Yeah, I try not to think about just how long ago school was. I wrapped up in 2008 and went and worked at a seafood restaurant for a couple months straight out of school. At the time though, it didn’t pan out and I pursued a path of retail with no plans to circle back to hospitality. Did you study straight out of school? I was never great with academia so I decided to go straight into the workforce after finishing year 12. I’ve done some tertiary studies since but never in a formal environment like uni. How did Super Nash Brothers come about? Ross and I went over to the states for a trip for another business we were in (The Burger Collective) in Jan of 2020. We had a bunch of meetings teed up with chefs, influencers and a few big chains, just as Covid started to get a bit more serious. All of our meetings were canned, so we spent the week eating everything in our site which is where we found Nashville Fried Chicken. It was like nothing we’d ever tried back home so when we got back, Ross locked himself in the kitchen for 3 months testing and trialling recipes until he got the flavour and texture spot on. We literally ate hot fried chicken 10 times a week for that whole time. We then had a few friends over to try it out and after some positive feedback, we figured we’d give opening a fried chicken shop a crack. What is your most exciting Super Nash milestone so far? I think the most exciting milestone in my eyes has been opening

our stores. It’s been so cool to see something that we’ve built, designed and planned not only come to life, but bring crowds of people from all over Sydney to come and enjoy. Or seeing people I haven’t spoken to in years come down to our shops (not knowing I’m part of the business) either raving about our food or hearing high praise from friends, etc. You guys claim to have the hottest chicken sando in Sydney, how hot are we talking?

Well, we’ve seen a whole lot of DNFs (Did Not Finish), quite a few tears and there may or may not have been a mild heart attack (not kidding!). It’s why we’ve got a waiver for everyone who wants to give it a crack (not for the faint of heart!). In terms of how hot it is: we’ve got a few elements on it to bring the heat, so it’s hard to determine an exact number, but I can say it’s got an ingredient that hits 11M scovilles and another that’s between 5M & 8M, so we’re talking muy caliente. What would you recommend as a first order for a Nash Noob? The Nash Sando Combo. It’s our best seller by a mile and gives new customers a chance to sample a bit of everything we offer at Super Nash. It’s got our signature sando, crinkle cut chips, a tender and a can of drink to wash it all down. We’ve got three seasoning levels that determine how spicy the chicken will be. If you can’t handle the heat, we offer a southern fried option; our signature Nash is our most popular seasoning level and is a great blend of sweet and spicy. We’ve also got a hot seasoning for people looking for a little more kick. If you’re coming with a friend, I’d recommend the Super Nash Sampler as it’s got a bit of everything we offer at SNB.

PETS

LUPA LOPEZ KIKI Kiki - A mini Foxy-Russell rescue dog who has been with her family since she was a young puppy. Her name means «double happiness» in French and she has certainly brought her family joy and laughter in spades. Those who know her will definitely say that she is a little dog with a big personality!

NTOMBI NTOMBI - A purebred boxer who will be 5 on 1st June. She has a beautiful nature and is stuck to her owner, Stetheas, side 24/7. She is extremely social and loves the dog park, mud puddles, squeezing onto people’s laps while they’re sitting down and cuddles. She also has a thing about popping champagne corks - she’s a bit of a party girl!

22

LUPA LOPEZ - a 9 year old Siberian Husky who was adopted at 5 years old by her owner Jose, she now acts as his full-time shadow. Lupa is super smart, but also very clumsy. She is really good with kids, people and a select few dogs - the girls got high standards. She loves to wander around North Turramurra soaking up heaps of compliments from locals.

PATCH

PATCH - A little long-haired Jack Rusell owned by Stan, often known or recognised as the man that walked the 3 little dogs around South Turramurra for many years.. Patch is Stan’s little shadow and follows him around everywhere. Patch was originally adopted with another dog Rosie, and later Lockie was adopted to complete the trio. Unfortunately, Rosie and Lockie have since passed away. Patch just celebrated his 17th birthday, he loves to go on walks and often visits the dog park on Vernon Street.

LUNA & JUNO

MAMA-LADE MAMA-LADE: Little Mama-lade started her life off on the streets as a stray, finally arriving with Jess, the owner of JTaylor Hair Salon, in 2021 . Because she had kittens at such a young age, she struggled having the energy and sustenance to grow big and strong herself, so she’s very little! Once the two little ones were rehomed, Mamalade became a classic foster fail and now lives with her mum (Jess), cat brother/sister Zlatan and Luna and her Border Collie brother, Echo. LUNA & JUNO - Luna and Juno are two much loved members of the Lambert family. Luna is a black Cavoodle (Cavalier King Charles x Poodle) and she’s turning 9 years old this year. Don’t her age fool you, she is fit as a fiddle and would chase a ball ALL day long if it was a possibility. Juno is the younger of the two (6 years old) and a Schmoodle (Toy Poodle X Maltese-Shih Tzu). Juno tends to take the slower lane and would prefer kisses and cuddles over an intense game of fetch!
