A message from the Mayor I’d like to update Turramurra residents on Council projects and issues that will be of interest to those living in the area.

Turramurra Community Hub Some of you have asked about the status of the Turramurra Community Hub. This project aims to provide a new library, community centre, underground public car parking and an upgraded Turramurra centre. A Council decision in May 2020 paused the Turramurra Hub project with the intention of preparing new planning controls for Ku-ring-gai. These new controls would have concentrated additional development near public transport and in town centres.

Gilroy Road cycleway Council is installing a temporary separated cycleway in Gilroy Road. The cycleway will also provide a cycling link to the Turramurra shops, Cameron Park and Karuah Oval and on to Turramurra Memorial Park. The separated cycleway will be created by installing temporary kerbs and bollards with line marking and signage. Once the cycleway is installed, the community can give their view on the project and whether it should become more permanent.

Since that decision was taken, community opposition has been expressed to the increased housing density proposed by last year’s draft housing strategy. As a result the Council decided not to proceed with that strategy – meaning there will be no new planning controls to raise building heights or increase dwelling numbers and instead, any new housing will be built under existing controls. However it’s important to understand that without providing increased residential dwelling numbers in town centres, there will not be enough funding for the community facilities planned for the Turramurra Hub. The alternative of Council taking out massive loans to fund these facilities is a risky and unacceptable strategy to most people. Similar issues have been experienced with the proposed Lindfield Hub, where no tender has been successful.

Turramurra Memorial Park Work is about to start on upgrading the amenities building at Turramurra Memorial Park. Once finished, the building will have accessible male/female change-rooms, new showers and toilets, a covered outdoor space with a kitchen and BBQ and extra storage. Weather permitting, we expect the new building to be ready for use by the middle of this year.

Kissing Point Village Green playground The upgrade of the Kissing Point Village Green playground has started and will be finished in a few months. Based on your ideas, the new playground will have a variety of equipment and spaces for children to enjoy. TURRAMURRA Images: Sphinx Memorial, by Alec Smart

A By Alec Smart

A Sphinx carved from native sandstone is the centrepiece of a little-known war memorial in North Turramurra.

AS LOVERS of ancient history are no doubt aware, a Sphinx is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of either a bird of prey or a human, although cats and sheep heads were often featured. Sphinx statues were primarily deployed as guardians of temples and tombs. Egyptian versions, of which the Great Sphinx of Giza (carved 2500 BCE) and the smaller Sphinx of Memphis are the Sydney’s own most famous examples, usually featured male heads. Sphinx is the Ancient Greek versions also centrepiece of a had eagle wings and were typically female. The word ‘Sphinx’ is secluded war memorial possibly derived from the Greek Sfíximo, meaning ‘squeeze’, or near the southern sfíngo, meaning ‘tighten’, both of entrance to Bobbin which refer to how lions kill their prey: by suffocation. Head Surprisingly, Sydney has its own Sphinx statue. Carved between 1926-1928, it is considerably younger than its source of inspiration – the Great Sphinx of Giza - by some 4,400 years, and only one eighth the size of the 73m long, 20m high original. Located here in 2074 postcode, Sydney’s own Sphinx is the centrepiece of a secluded war memorial near the southern entrance to Bobbin Head, at the edge of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in North Turramurra. Although debate surrounds the origins and inspiration for the celebrated Great Sphinx of Giza (probably the little-known Pharoah Khafre) the North Turramurra Sphinx was chipped out of the surrounding sandstone by former stonemason and retired WWI soldier Private William Shirley. Private Shirley was convalescing at nearby Lady Davidson Private Hospital on Bobbin Head Rd. The hospital, according to its website, was “built in 1920 by the Department of Defence to treat ex-servicemen who had contracted tuberculosis during World War 1.” Private Shirley was indeed afflicted with tuberculosis. His lungs were also weakened by gas attacks on the First World War battlefields of the Western Front across France and Germany, the

08

meandering line of fortified trenches that brutally extinguished the lives of so many young men. Shirley trained in Egypt prior to his military deployment in Europe, so he may have seen the original Sphinx that inspired his life’s legacy. However, there is speculation the medical superintendent at Lady Davidson Hospital suggested the Sphinx project to the former stonemason, to utilise his talents and focus his thoughts away from his rapidly declining health. Private Shirley’s lung damage inhibited his ability to work longer than two hours a day, so it took a year and a half to complete his mission. He died the following year, in 1929, never seeing his stonework unveiled as the centrepiece of a war memorial in 1931, that also includes two tiny pyramids. It is now known as the Sphinx Memorial. Time has eroded the soft sandstone of the Turramurra Sphinx, and part of its headdress has detached. Like the Great Sphinx of Giza, it too is missing a nose, although the Egyptian monolith had his chiselled off, possibly by a Moslem leader to deter Egyptian peasants from worshipping it (the Sphinx was linked to the sun god, Horus).

Address: The Sphinx Memorial is located next to the southern entrance of Ku-ring-gai National Park on Bobbin Head Road. Turn right onto Sphinx Road and follow it approx. 400metres to the memorial. Park entry fees: $12 per vehicle per day. The Sphinx carpark closes 5.30pm Monday to Sunday Bobbin Head gates are closed 8pm - 6am (summer time), 5.30pm - 6am the rest of the year. Emma Nedov is an elite artistic gymnast with 3 World Championships and a World Cup gold medal on her mantle, you may remember her from 2074 Issue#1. We caught up with Emma recently and found out that she’s very busy these past few months with a TV show to add to her list of achievements.

T

TELL us a little bit about yourself and what you have been up to since we last spoke with you? Well since our last interview I’ve been training gymnastics still, I had a bit of time off from things during COVID. I got a great opportunity to work on a new TV show and I’ve now got a full time job as a Guest Services and Wellness manager at a luxury coworking and event space. It’s been an exciting year! Can you share with us the name and details of the TV show you are doing? Absolutely! The show is called Ultimate Tag and it launches on Channel Seven this Sunday at 7pm (March 7, continues Monday /Tuesday 7.30pm). It’s a game of speed and agility and ultimately ‘tip’ just made more fun and challenging with obstacles, superheros and some flips. Has gymnastics been an important part of getting you in this new role? I would say gymnastics definitely helped my skillset and capability to be successful on the show and it gave me a unique edge to my style as a Pro Tagger. Have you had to do any additional training? Absolutely - I did a lot more running in preparation for the show and hard surface landings and tricks as I’m more accustomed to the gymnastics floor and matting. I also had to get used to doing everything in shoes! I’m certainly more used to barefoot.

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

Are there any funny incidents that took place during filming that you could share with us? I spent majority of the time whilst filming laughing if I’m honest! There were a few misteps and little falls that were hilarious but I’ll let you watch the show and see as I’ve already spotted a couple of them in the promo clips. Do you have any advice for young people hoping to get into gymnastics/TV? My advice for everything in life is to say yes to new opportunities! For gymnastics, I’d say to continue through the tough times as the sport will always lead somewhere. It can teach you skills for anything you end up doing in life, whether it’s time management and discipline or the ability to flip. My advice for getting to experience something like Ultimate Tag is to be confident in yourself and go out there and look for new adventures.

“My advice for everything in life is to say yes to new opportunities! For gymnastics, I’d say to continue through the tough times”

What’s on the horizon for EMMA in 2021? Look, I’m not sure! I’d love for something to come from Ultimate Tag and I’m also enjoying my new job. I’ll continue training and working on my skills and go with the flow.

WELLNESS

Locals dance their way to health and happiness and dancing is a great way to de-stress and feel good. And a group of local seniors are proving that you’re never too old.

E

EACH Wednesday, they participate in a program called DanceMoves, a stylised dance class specifically designed for seniors. It’s one of the many programs offered by Dance Health Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation offering dance and movement training to seniors in care homes and community centres around Australia. Co-founder Gwen Korebrits says the low impact fitness program, accompanied by a unique playlist that changes each week, focuses on falls prevention, balance, flexibility and stamina. It incorporates various dance styles, and no technique, talent or dance experience is necessary. “We believe everyone is a dancer regardless of age or ability,” she says. Gwen explains as an exercise form, dance is ideal for senior bodies. The benefits range from improvements in memory, movement and mental health. “Dance is a medicine; it increases your Cardiovascular and aerobic fitness, produces muscle strength and encourages balance,” she says. “It improves mood, enhances memory, induces neuroplasticity and increases self-awareness. And then, of course, there are the social benefits.” Dance Health Alliance classes are open to seniors of all

abilities, with movements that can be performed either sitting or standing. Turramurra local Alex Young has been attending classes for four years. She is in her 70s, had never danced before, but it didn’t matter. “As the teacher says, there’s no right or wrong” she says. “The classes are fun and friendly, and you just go at your own pace”. Alex says the classes have helped her manage her arthritis and stay healthy. “It’s great exercise for your body and your brain,” she says. “The music really gets you moving, and it’s nice to connect with other people in the class.”

A place for men to feel safe to be themselves.

MARTIN Gillespie is the founder and CEO of GEM Wellness Warriors, a consulting business designed for men, and founded in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic after many years of research. Its focus is the wellness of men in society. GEM, which stands for G- Growth, E - Empathetic, M – Mindset, provides a place for men and women to feel safe to be themselves, to grow, to become more empathetic and to change their mindset to heart values. Martin works with individuals and groups, and looks at questioning the preset mindset, challenge preset beliefs and look at the pillars of good wellness which includes the relationship with nutrition, sleep, connection and emotional wellbeing. GEM Wellness Warriors came about after Martin’s personal journey which included trauma, divorce, parenting and overcoming stage 4 cancer. These experiences brought him to the conclusion that health wellness was the number one priority in life. In Martin’s words, “Men’s wellness is one of society’s unspoken areas, which sadly also represents the global highest suicide rates in the world. More men in the age bracket 30 - 50 commit suicide than any other age group. We are programmed not to talk about emotions, about vulnerabilities, as these, regardless of upbringing, are not discussed openly. More men would rather discuss the performance of their car than that of their health and wellness.” Support for men’s wellness has a society and perception challenge as it is still regarded as an emotional area of weakness if you ask / seek help. We men learn during the attachment years (aged 0 - 7) not to show emotions, be strong, be brave, crying is a sign of weakness. We are not encouraged during our schooling to discuss matters of emotion, or from the heart. As we develop we retreat into our ‘man cave’ and only show small amounts of emotion on a reactive basis. It is a common misconception that showing emotions are a sign of weakness in our society.” Martin is a Board Member at Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and a firm believer that change is necessary in society, including the teaching of wellness, good nutrition, holistic health, connections and optimism.

Accountability is the key to success in achieving your fitness goals.

A

ACCORDING to David Bowman, Coach and Head Trainer at refreshYOU, ‘accountability’ is the number one thing you must include when you decide to “get fit”. David asserts that there are numerous studies to support the importance of accountability when it comes to achieving your goals. In fact, there are many case studies to show that the most highly successful people and leaders all have accountability coaches in some format. David says; The benefits of accountability include: Accelerates your performance. By working with a wellness/fitness coach you can iron out the kinks in your plan and develop a sure-fire winning strategy that you can execute knowingly with confidence. Helps you measure your success and progress. A good coach will help you define what success looks like and will help you set milestones to measure your progress along the way. Keeps you engaged. There are things that will come up that will distract you from achieving your goals and take you off course. Knowing that your coach is there to track your progress will keep you going to the finish line. Keeps you responsible. When you work with someone who pushes you to make a change and holds you accountable for your actions each week, you will also begin to recognise your progress and know that you are ultimately responsible for these outcomes.

12

Confirms your thoughts and ideas. You can silence your inner critic and bounce your ideas off someone else. They can help you make sound decisions and give you constructive advice. So, how do you get yourself an accountability coach? Accountability coaches come in many forms and can include hiring a personal trainer, joining a gym, engaging a nutritionist or even simply finding a relative or friend who can help you stay motivated and on track towards achieving your goals. They need to be someone within your circle of influence, that you can confide in. According to David, creating and establishing accountability doesn’t need to be a long-drawnout process either. He suggests by following 3 simple steps you can be on your way. Step 1 is to find a purpose partner to keep you accountable, Step 2 is becoming personally accountable for your success, and finally Step 3 is getting a mentor or coach to support your journey. If you would like to learn more about accountability or refreshYOU, be sure to check out their website or speak with one of their coaches.

Indoor plants are all the rage and they are not only adding beautiful green highlights to your décor, but also health benefits to your city living.

W

WHEN it comes to interior decorating there’s no easier way to liven up a room and add colour, texture, and style than by putting a few well-chosen plants around the place. Contrary to common misgivings, most indoor plants are quite easy to keep and they don’t always need to be in a sunny, airy location: some thrive in the bathroom; others are perfectly content in a cool, dim, hallway. The sheer variety of indoor plants available makes them extremely versatile as decorative items. From palms that can fan out to fill a cavernous corner, to vines that can be trained across a stark archway, to small cacti that can add humour and interest to a bare windowsill, there’s a plant that will suit every situation. Yet plants also have benefits beyond the aesthetic. Studies have suggested that having plants inside a home or workspace will increase positive mood and lead to better productivity and harmony. Plants are an organic filtering machine that suck in carbon dioxide and release it as oxygen. Many houseplants act as air purifiers, actually absorbing toxins including benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene. Having said all this, there are some plants you should steer clear of if you have pets or young children - they may cause adverse reactions in humans and can even be fatal to cats and dogs. The best thing to do, always, is speak to an expert who can guide you on the best choice of plants for your circumstances. Go to a local nursery. They’ll be familiar with the climate and soil in the area, as well as any pests or diseases. Get to know them and you’ll be able to pop in any time for advice or to add to your plant family.

HOME/LIVING REAL ESTATE

TURRAMURRA

UPDATE By Josh Luschwitz

T

What Buyers are looking for in the current environment.

THE way we use and view our homes changed, possibly forever, last March when Sydney went into lockdown. Suddenly people have needed their home to function as a home office for remote working, a classroom for remote learning and a resort for holidaying at home. Spare rooms have been cleaned out and re-purposed, backyards had kids running around in them every day and those with high speed internet, air-conditioning or solar power appreciated these additions more than ever. And even as the pandemic restrictions are easing in Sydney, many of these lifestyle changes have lingered and have had a noticeable impact on what many buyers and tenants are seeking when it comes to finding a new home. These are some key features that I feel will make your home more desirable in the current climate: Home Offices Dedicated work spaces are highly sought after. If you don’t already have a dedicated study consider repurposing an unused room or installing custom joinery into the corner of a living space to make it more a multipurpose space. Properties with a floor plan that can comfortably accommodate working-from-home parents and studying children without compromising family living provide the ultimate flexibility and are more sought after than ever. Cabana & Pool Houses In the past, cabanas and pools houses were often underutilised, especially during the colder months, but now they can be a much needed extra living/study/retreat space with families all at home together. With travel restrictions continuing to limit and disrupt holiday plans, having a cabana or pool house can allow you to entertain and relax or just get some much-needed separation between kids and parents and make a ‘holiday at home’ just as satisfying. In some cases, adding a cabana can be a simpler and less expensive exercise than adding a room to your existing home.

14

Connectivity and Creature Comforts Looking beyond the space a home has to offer, there are smaller improvements that can still give a home extra appeal to today’s potential buyers and tenants. Remote working, home schooling and Netflix binges are putting an unprecedented pressure on home internet connections and having a reliable, high speed service, such as fibre, to the premises, has become a highly desirable feature that you can add to your property. To remain comfortable whilst using your ultra-fast internet you may also want to install air conditioning or heating - another inclusion that has become increasingly sought after as people spend more time at home. Solar Power One of the downsides of these creature comforts is the power they consume. Solar panels and battery systems have become even more valuable as electricity consumption increases, especially during day time hours. We are fortunate in Ku-ring-gai to often enjoy larger than average block sizes, great public facilities and some beautiful natural surrounds, which have all contributed to make the area even more appealing compared to more heavily developed areas of Sydney. If you are interested in how the value of your home has fared in the current market or how you can further improve your property’s worth please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

One thing we can do, that will at least put some minds to rest, is ensure that their time spent online is ‘quality time’. There are a number of educational websites for kids, that offer entertaining content, but will also stimulate their precious minds.

www.abc.net.au/abckids

ABC for Kids has come a long way from its humble beginnings and now offers a full range of interactive and educational contents and the best part is it’s free. You can find something to suit every age with ABC Kids App, ABC Kids Listen App, ABC Kids Play App, and ABC ME for the older ones.

Code Club

codeclubau.org/about-us

Code Club is a great initiative that relies on the premise that every kid should have the opportunity to learn digital skills, and that’s exactly what this site does and it’s free. Their nationwide network of clubs, serve over 75,000 youth a week and is part of the Telstra Foundation. With 10,000 clubs in 120 countries and projects in 28 languages, this is a gold star initiative and well worth checking out.

Last issue, we published a feature on the amazing ‘Wheels for Ryan’ cause started in the local community. We caught up with Suzanne Mann to hear about the outcome.

W

WHEN we first started out we truly thought $40,000 would get us to our goal but we came up against a lot of hurdles. In the end we needed about $75,000 to get a vehicle that was truly appropriate and gave Ryan all the bells and whistles he needed - a Mercedes Sprinter. We pulled out all stops and were only able to reach our goal using numerous angles, whilst building a network of compassion among local businesses/community members. We even had Mercedes Benz CastleHill on board who reduced the price for us and helped with all of the modifications we needed. Most notably, our My Cause page raised over $34k, and another local father, Greg Johnson, was able to raise over $25,000 through his own My Cause by riding the elevation of Everest in ONE DAY on a street near where he lives in Wahroonga. We have to give special mention to the Lions Club Hornsby who made the final, incredible donation that allowed us to push

over the line and purchase the Van within 4 months of our original meeting with Ryan and his family. It took a month for the car to be converted and before school finished for 2020, the Kim Family were able to drive Ryan to and from school, giving him the freedom and independence every 10 year old deserves. Unfortunately, we can never cure Ryan but we can ALWAYS CHOOSE to make a difference in someone’s life. It isn’t always by money. Sometimes it’s by time, spreading the word or simply listening. I feel we showed Ryan true love and we showed all of our children how together we can all make a difference.

Thank you to all of the incredibly generous local community members and businesses that supported us!

WILLOW THE WEIRDO

WILLOW THE WEIRDO - There is so much to say about 12 year old Ragdoll x Domestic Shorthair Willow, AKA Willow the Weirdo - despite being blind and hard of hearing, she is living her best life. She is an expert communicator - constantly letting her owners know when her water bowl is empty, she’s hungry or when she wants a tummy rub. Willow proves that cats have 9 lives - surviving a fall from a 2nd storey roof onto concrete, 2 dog attacks, a cat attack and 2 rounds of near-fatal tick bites.

We bought our house in Pymble on the housePro Marketplace, it gave me chance for an alternative to outside the normal marketplace. No hassles easy process. I have no hesitation in recommending Mark or housePro and their fees were cheap.

housePro was amazing, they resold my house in Warrawee before I even paid for it and for a great profit. They found me a buyer on their marketplace, it was incredible to sell with NO AGENT FEES OR ADVERTISING COSTS, it was unbelievable.
