FOOD Good times and airy vibes

SURRY HILLS is a cultural hotspot for restaurants, bars, coffee shops and boutique stores. Its style is quirky, with a touch of eclectic but in a forward-thinking kind of way. This month we celebrate while the sun is still out with a special feature on rooftop bars in and around Surry Hills. There’s always one constant that comes to mind when we talk about Surry Hills and that’s community. The Surry Hills residents identify strongly with their suburb and are fiercely proud in protecting it and its people. Having been home to many resident action groups over the centuries it is here that we have seen changes that have set the storylines of Australian history. Whether it be the dog-friendly bars and pubs or the weekly gatherings of local residents at nearby parks, there’s a strong bond between those who make their home Surry Hills. This month there is a hive of activity in this vibrant neighbourhood. We have the Chinese New Year festivities with lantern installations around the city and a celebration of Chinese New Year food in participating restaurants. The much-anticipated Mardi Gras is also going ahead, although looking slightly different this year. Replacing milk crates and veranda parties, will be the grounds of the SCG with ticketed seating options. We still think it’s going to be huge, because the spirit of Mardi Gras is strong! We hope you enjoy this edition!

MARDI GRAS A HISTORY OF THE SYDNEY GAY AND LESBIAN MARDI GRAS

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, a massive spectacle that takes place annually to celebrate gender diversity, was initially launched as a protest march and an opportunity for homosexuals to express pride in their identity, during a time when they were criminalised and targeted for violence.

T

THE Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras takes place annually in central Sydney at the end of summer (Feb-March) with a range of activities, performances, exhibitions, workshops and a public fair celebrating gender diversity. The highlight is the Parade, featuring over 12,500 entrants in a cavalcade of elaborate costumes, which flows from the CBD into Darlinghurst, the traditional epicentre of Sydney’s gay and lesbian culture. The participants accompany ornately-decorated floats, usually representing community groups and organisations, the spectacle enlightened by music and fireworks. The floats typically embrace an annual theme, or satirically poke fun at social issues or personalities hostile to the LGBTQI community. Each year a Chief of Parade is chosen to represent the spirit of Mardi Gras. In the past this has included gay actor Rupert Everett, Olympic gold medal winner Matthew Mitcham, and world-renowned gay rights activist Peter Tatchell. The post-parade party, which utilises Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park, is one of the largest party events in Australia, attracting international stars. Previous headliners have included Tina Arena, Boy George, Kylie Minogue, Jimmy Somerville, Village People, Sheena Easton, Courtney Act, Joan Rivers and George Michael. Mardi Gras is both an incredible public spectacle, social highlight and a multi-million dollar revenue earner for Sydney tourism. However, it was initially launched as a protest march and an opportunity for homosexuals to express pride in their identity, during a time when their activities were criminalised, they were targeted for violence and murder by gangs and po-

lice, and treated as mentally unwell.

CHECKERED HISTORY On 24 June 1978, a chilly mid-winter’s day in Sydney, a crowd of up to 500 people – eventually swelling to around 2000 by 9.30pm in the evening – gathered in Darlinghurst’s Taylor Square to campaign for gay rights and commemorate the infamous Stonewall Riots in the USA. (The LGBTQI community of New York stood up to police harassment and triggered a social change for homosexual rights). The Sydney rally in 1978, part of a worldwide ‘Gay Solidarity Day’, consisted of a protest march in the morning, a public demonstration in the afternoon, and then a festive parade from Taylor Square along Oxford Street to Hyde Park in the evening, to hear speakers and network. However, as the crowds attending the evening fiesta approached the south-eastern corner of Hyde Park, NSW Police officers suddenly halted the march and impounded the lead truck carrying the public address system. After demanding the participants disperse, the police then encountered unexpected resistance from the gathered revellers – most of whom had endured years of intimidation by Sydney officers. A reportedly ‘jubilant’ crowd, many of whom diverted towards Kings Cross, danced and sang in the main streets around Darlinghurst, until, enraged, police officers removed their identification numbers and waded into the throng, bashing and arresting.

Fifty three people were taken into custody, including bystanders who joined the rebellion, incensed by police treatment of the marchers. Sydney Morning Herald printed the names and occupations of those arrested, causing some to lose their jobs. The subsequent trials (the first of which police refused to allow the public and media into the open courtroom), brought considerable embarrassment to the NSW Govt and Premier Wran, a lawyer who prided himself as a supporter of civil liberties. Further protests and arrests ensued, but ultimately, in May 1979, the Summary Offences Act – the hated law that effectively criminalised gay men with jail terms of up to 14 years - was repealed. In 1984, Premier Wran bypassed his own party and introduced a private members bill to decriminalise being gay – NSW Parliament’s first conscience vote – and on 15 May 1984 The ‘Crimes (Amendment) Act 1984’ would decriminalise homosexual acts between consenting males over the age of 18. The parade has since become the world-renowned and beloved event that attracts tens of thousands of revellers and spectators, is a massive boost to Sydney’s tourism, and draws international stars of music and popular culture to perform on its stages. These days, NSW Police have a more constructive relationship with Mardi Gras, and now enter a float in the annual parade featuring LGBTQI police officers. Cntn’d

Scott Marsh, satirical mural painter, brought the same-sex marriage debate into the spotlight with his painting of former Prime Minister Tony Abbot, just prior to the 2017 national plebiscite on legalising same-sex unions.

I

IN SEPTEMBER 2017, a large mural began to take shape on the side wall of Hunter’s Café in Redfern. Painted in three days by an award-winning and somewhat cheeky Sydney artist, Scott Marsh, the 10-metre high satirical piece featured former Prime Minister Tony Abbott getting married… to himself! Abbot was both bride and groom! The mural was topical – the nation was undergoing a public (and often heated) debate on gender issues in the run-up to the Australian Law Postal Marriage Survey, also known as the plebiscite on same-sex marriage. The nationwide survey was held between 12 September and 7 November 2017 to gauge support for legalising same-sex marriage in Australia. The Survey, overseen by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), was mailed in reply-paid envelopes to every eligible voter on the Federal Electoral Roll with the question: “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?” The response was either a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Tony Abbot, who served as the 28th Prime Minister of Australia from Sept 2013 to Sept 2015, had latterly taken a strong line campaigning against legalising same-sex marriage. Scott Marsh was already known for poking fun at political and social leaders in his public works of art. Marsh’s mural of Tony Abbot marrying himself thrust the same-sex marriage issue into the national spotlight and even drew the attention of Abbot’s sister, City of Sydney councillor Christine Forster, herself in a samesex union and supporter of the Yes vote. Ms Forster, who described the mural as a “great example of YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

modern street art,” told the ABC, “I haven’t seen it in person, I’ve only seen it on Facebook. It certainly looks to be a striking artwork there’s no doubt about that!” She continued, “It’s a satirical piece. Good on the artist for putting it up there. It’s in my electorate in the City of Sydney and the City of Sydney is very keen to promote street art.” Marsh explained his motive to the Daily Telegraph. “I wanted to allude to Abbott’s ego, that he’s in love with himself yet he doesn’t support the right for people to marry who they want.” 12,727,920 people subsequently responded to the same-sex marriage plebiscite, 79.5 per cent of the electorate. On the day the outcome of the national vote was revealed, 15 Nov 2017, Marsh painted yet another controversial mural on the topic on a Newtown pub wall. The mural featured Tony Abbot again, but this time with Cardinal George Pell, Australia’s highest-ranking Catholic and Prefect of the Vatican Secretariat under Pope Francis. The duo both campaigned vigorously to deter the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Provocatively, Marsh painted Abbot’s left hand inserted in the tight rainbow-coloured swimming pants of the Cardinal. The mural was vandalised and painted over the following day by Christian fundamentalists, who were reportedly incensed at the result of the national Same-Sex Marriage Plebiscite, which on 15 Nov 2017 revealed 61.6 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to allow same-sex couples to marry. The law was changed shortly afterwards.

2010 magazine caught up with Darlo Darlings founder Mike Galvin about the community-based organisation and its achievements.

MIKE GALVIN, vice president of Surry Hills Creative Precinct, spoke to 2010 magazine about Darlo Darlings, the Darlinghurst (and Surry Hills)-based community organisation he founded. So, how did it start and what is it about? “I started Darlo Darlings in April 2018 with the mission to create an inclusive, neighbourly and positive place for residents and business owners from Postcode 2010 to connect. And events do you provide? “The events are aimed at bringing locals together,” Galvin explained, “and highlighting local businesses and the charities we support, including Rough Edges for our homeless and marginalised community and The Girls & Boys Brigade, for our marginalised youth.

for people in need. “Darlo Pantry was a huge success and helped so many people, not just our homeless, but also locals who had lost their jobs during Covid. As essential services started to resume, the pantry continued for some time, and around October 2020, we decided to alter the concept from a kerbside service, to a mobile service, utilising the One Meal Makes a Difference giving-table on Saturdays at Green Park in Darlinghurst. What activities have you planned for the future? “It’s an exciting year for Darlo Darlings; we have resumed our in-person events, and have a great calendar of events planned. We will also be resuming our Darlo Gaol Tours at the National Art School, as well as creating new experiences that bring people together and make living in Postcode 2010 an even more enjoyable experience.”

How many people are now involved in the community? “Darlo Darlings has around 6,000 members,” Darlo Pantry, is that literally operated from a kerbside? “The pantry was born from the need created by essential services for the homeless closing down. The concept was that residents could bring items from home, or pick up a few extra things at the supermarket, and place them on the shelf

WELLNESS Indoor plants are all the rage and they are not only adding beautiful green highlights to your décor, but also health benefits to your city living.

W

WHEN it comes to interior decorating there’s no easier way to liven up a room and add colour, texture, and style than by putting a few well-chosen plants around the place. Contrary to common misgivings, most indoor plants are quite easy to keep and they don’t always need to be in a sunny, airy location: some thrive in the bathroom; others are perfectly content in a cool, dim, hallway. The sheer variety of indoor plants available makes them extremely versatile as decorative items. From palms that can fan out to fill a cavernous corner, to vines that can be trained across a stark archway, to small cacti that can add humour and interest to a bare windowsill, there’s a plant that will suit every situation. Yet plants also have benefits beyond the aesthetic. Studies have suggested that having plants inside a home or workspace will increase positive mood and lead to better productivity and harmony. Plants are an organic filtering machine that suck in carbon dioxide and release it as oxygen. Many houseplants act as air purifiers, actually absorbing toxins including benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene. Having said all this, there are some plants you should steer clear of if you have pets or young children - they may cause adverse reactions in humans and can even be fatal to cats and dogs. The best thing to do, always, is speak to an expert who can guide you on the best choice of plants for your circumstances. Go to a local nursery. They’ll be familiar with the climate and soil in the area, as well as any pests or diseases. Get to know them and you’ll be able to pop in any time for advice or to add to your plant family.

BEAUTIFUL, AFFORDABLE FUNERALS

W

Scott Duncombe is the Owner, Director and Celebrant of Sydney Funeral Co. in Darlinghurst. His unique approach to funeral services is changing the way funerals are carried out. We took a few moments in Scott’s busy schedule to ask him some questions. WHY did you set up Sydney Funerals Co.? I started up Sydney Funerals Co. because I wanted to be able to give people options and choice around the locations, days of the week and times for the funeral ceremony. I had seen many other companies not care about these details. What makes Sydney Funerals different? We offer a pricing transparency model, where the family knows exactly what they are paying for from the very first meeting. Our prices for funerals are never bundled up and there are no commissions. We are also a celebrant led, owned and operated business, meaning that our Funeral Directors are also celebrants. This means we are all about the ceremony, ensuring that families have the most appropriate send off for their loved one.

Contribution where families can raise funds for the funeral, the wake or a charity of their choice. There are no management fees or administration fees. What is the Living Legacy Tree? This is a beautiful service where you buy a tree planting solution so you can place the ashes into the ground or a pot plant, creating a living legacy for all the family to share. When planning a funeral what are 3 important things to consider? - take your time, there is no rush - make sure you see an itemised bill/invoice - look at all your options, ask lots of questions

What services do you offer that are unique? We offer our ‘anywhere, anytime’ approach, meaning that we can hold a service in any location, any day of the week at any time of the day. We also offer a crowd funding platform called Tap a Little

This story book, written by Jo Hirst, helps transgender children understand they are not alone.

ALL CHILDREN deserve to see themselves reflected on the page. When there was nowhere for my son to see himself in picture books, I wrote Australia’s first picture book for transgender children, The Gender Fairy. The Gender Fairy is a simple story to reassure transgender children they are normal and not alone. Because there is little or no representation of gender diverse children in picture books, trans children can feel isolated and even a sense of shame about being different. Literature can play an important in helping children feel seen and a part of our community. The Gender Fairy was also written to help all children develop an understanding of the journey some of their peers are going through. Reading books like The Gender Fairy at school and Kindergarten helps foster empathy and a greater acceptance of difference with all children. The beginning of the book brings an opportunity for discussion about the messages we give children about gender stereotyping. It’s a reminder of the way we may fall into these traps ourselves and think about how we can challenge that.

When children feel seen, heard and loved and accepted for who they are, they thrive, not only at school but as individual and wonderful human beings. Dr Michelle Telfer, Director of The Gender Service at The Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital sums up in her foreword to The Gender Fairy, “As a children’s book it approaches complex subject matter with a beautiful simplicity. It will be of great assistance to gender-diverse children in finding acceptance. It will help other children too. Most significantly, this book provides parents with a thoughtful way to communicate these difficult issues with their children, helping families to find understanding together.” You can find The Gender Fairy and Jo’s second book A House For Everyone - a story to help children learn about gender identity and gender expression, at www.johirst.com or your local bookstore

FOOD

F

Chinese food culture is deeply rooted in tradition and during Chinese New Year celebrations it couldn’t be more evident. This year’s Chinese New Year will be celebrated on the 12th February 2021 and there are plenty of foodie options on offer.

FOR the Chinese people the New Year Feast is not just about having a big or lavish meal, it’s more about the symbolism of each dish and the sharing of it amongst family and friends. Doing it the right way is thought to bring luck and prosperity for the coming year. The most important meal during this 16-day festival is the ‘Reunion’ dinner celebrated on Chinese New Year’s Eve. It’s a time when family and friends will travel from afar to get together and share in a huge carefully planned feast. Typical dishes include whole fish, dumplings and spring rolls. Their symbolism of food comes from the name and the appearance of the food. For example, the word for Fish in Chinese also sounds like the word for prosperous. Dumplings are thought to look like Chinese traditional silver ingots & spring rolls like gold bars, thus signifying wealth, which means you have permission to eat a lot! This time of the year is by far the best time to venture out and tantalise your taste buds whilst enjoying the festivities. The City of Sydney has a month-long schedule of entertainment and experiences, including restaurant suggestions, listed on their Whats’ On page for you to enjoy.

16

It’s also worth checking out your local Chinese restaurant as it’s at this time they are most likely offering a New Year inspired banquet or menu. Our favourites include Chin Chin in Surry Hills or Lotus in the CBD. Bodhi Restaurant and Bar is your vegan choice. For a dumpling takeaway fix check out Surry Hills Dumpling at 240 Elizabeth Street, where you will find a great variety on offer at fantastic prices. If you are more the homebody type, and let’s face it who isn’t these days, then why not make your own? The most traditional of the dishes, dumplings, are readily available in a large variety of flavours in not only specialty Chinese stores, but also your local Coles or Woolworths. Ready-made, all you need do is steam, boil or fry and you have a feast fit for the emperor! Chinese New Year is a vibrant and exciting time of the year and is also an important time for families and friends to get together. So why not take advantage of these rich cultural traditions and share in the fun and celebrations.

DOGGOS OF

SURRY HILLS

@

Who would have thought that a love of dogs and quarantine could bring the Surry Hills community together? @DOGGOSOFSURRYHILLS started off as an Instagram page for the local dogs of Surry Hills and surrounding areas by local resident, Lisa Hampton - who was stuck in hotel Quarantine at the time with more spare time on her hands than she’s had before! A love of dogs was the inspiration to help bring the community together, as well as making friends around the Neighbourhood - of the two AND four-legged kind. Since the page has been around, Lisa has seen a number of connections between 2010 dog-owners, with local meet-ups happening thanks to chance meetings via the page. As the popularity of the page grew - some new opportunities arose! A number of local dog owners began reaching out about dog sitting, and with some professional dog-walking experience under her belt, Lisa established a boutique doggy day care in her home - the ideal pandemic start-up if you ask us!

DOG/CAT FOOD DONATION Being an urbanised, inner-city area - the problem of displacement is quite visible. Every Saturday night, Lisa collects dog/ cat food and delivers it to the marginalized and needy in Ward Park. The food is donated from various places - but there is rarely enough to go around! If you would like to get involved - please contact Lisa via @doggosofsurryhills

MILO

MAVIS AND SPUD

MILO is a 2.5 year old Belgian Shepherd/Labrador mix that we brought with us from California, USA, a little over a year and a half ago. He's such a calm natured little man, we got so lucky with him as we had to do minimal training! He LOVES sitting out front of our little terrace house to watch the world go by. When he isn't playing with all of his friends at our Doggos of Surry Hills doggy daycare or running around Prince Alfred Park, he's sunbaking on one of Sydney’s many dog-friendly beaches. Milo loves a good doggy hang out so if any other puppers want to meet up just give him a woof! You can follow Milo on Instagram at @milo_the_black_sheprador

SPUD

MAVIS is a thirteen year old Border Terrier and Spud’s sister. She has mellowed with her advanced years, having recently celebrated her birthday, but show her a beach and she will run and dig until she either disappears into the horizon or down a hole. Her favourite thing to do is roll around on her cheap plastic Bunnings doormat or having a mooch around Frog Hollow, oblivious to what’s going on around her. SPUD was a later addition to the Drake/Everett family, arriving with us from the wonderful care of Jill at Jack Russell Rescue, and although his start in life wasn’t great he settled into the house quickly, gradually emerging from his shell and growing very attached to his sister, Mavis. He was recently defeated by his three year battle with cancer, and although he ruled the dog park with an iron rod he is very much missed by all. Vale Spud, you are missed.

SHOPPING

The Record Store opened on Friday 13th in March 2020 in Surry Hills after their previous Goulburn St store, where they’d been since 2003, was, in the words of owner-manager Stephan, “knocked down to build a very pretty new building.” Stephan spoke to 2010 magazine about the day-to-day operation of the store, which specialises in new and used vinyl albums and a range of other services.

W

What are their best-selling musical genres? “We’re an electronica specialist,” he revealed, “and have a very specific focus on getting lots of that stuff in, including regular shipments of new underground house and techno 12”s. Other than that, classic rock and pop is very big.”

streaming music? “The thing about Vinyl is that you can have a relationship with it, the artwork, the memories they evoke, the ritual of putting the record on, the sound of the needle dropping on the record - it’s a very visceral experience that humans can relate to.

What other items do they sell apart from records? “We have a very neat and tidy range of turntables, speaker’s, headphones, needles; basically everything you need to start from scratch to make a noise in your own apartment.”

The Record Store showcases the work of street artists on their webpage. Is there a synonymous link between the store, music culture and local street artists? “Well, for many years at the old store we had lots of walls that we were able to paint and I, being a fan of the idea that a wall looks nicer with stuff painted on it, just made it available to artists. There was clearly a link there for us and I guess there is a link in popular culture between cool music and visual art on the street, and you do tend to find these creative types mingle in many ways.”

The Record Store also hosts disc jockey workshops. What might you learn in DJ classes? “We offer an introductory class that takes two hours, basically it teaches you the basics of mixing on vinyl, which are quite simple. The trick with DJing is practice, practice, practice, so once you know the basics then it’s a matter of spending a lot of time practising them. The Record Store teach different types of ‘scratching’ in their DJ classes, which involves shuffling a record back and forth on a turntable while the needle causes a ‘scratching’ sound. “Yes, we’re able to teach you the basics of scratching.. scratching is made up of a series of basic moves and you need to master them and then you just lay them on top of each other or do them in sequence. So why are vinyl records preferable to internet-

22

Anything you wish to add? “Always add a bit of sugar to your Bolognese, it balances out the sounds of the tomatoes.”

The Record Store in Surry Hills is riding the wave of vinyl revival, selling new and used records, as well as promoting new music and working with creative artists.
