HISTORY
TKing Street is a vibrant and bustling thoroughfare running through the heart of Newtown. For many years, King Street has played a critical role in the urban development of Newtown, shaping the area’s character and identity and reflecting its unique mix of cultures, traditions, and lifestyles.
THE street was first established in the 1830s, a dirt road that ran from the city centre through the rural outskirts of Newtown. Over time, the road was widened and improved, and new buildings began to spring up along the street, including homes, shops, and other commercial establishments.
One of the earliest landmarks on King Street was the Newtown Bridge, which was built in 1885. It is one of the oldest surviving examples of a metal Truss bridge in Australia. The bridge provided easy access to the city centre and helped transform Newtown from a rural area into a bustling urban hub. As the area grew and developed, King Street became the main commercial and cultural artery of the neighbourhood, with a diverse mix of shops, pubs, restaurants, and entertainment venues lining the street.
One of the defining features of King Street is its eclectic mix of architectural styles and building types. From the grand Victorian-era terrace houses to the more modern and minimalist commercial buildings that have been added in recent years, King Street is a testament to the changing tastes and priorities of the people who have called Newtown
home over the years.
Perhaps the most iconic building on King Street is the Enmore Theatre, which opened in 1908 and is now considered one of the oldest operating theatres in Australia. Over the years, the theatre has played host to countless musical acts, comedians, and other performers, cementing itself as a beloved institution for the local community.
Another important landmark on King Street is the former Carriageworks industrial site, which has been transformed into the contemporary arts centre we know and love today. The site, which dates back to the 19th century, was originally used to manufacture rail carriages and other industrial goods.
In addition to its commercial and cultural significance, King Street has played an important role in shaping the social and political identity of Newtown. The street has been the site of countless protests, rallies, and demonstrations over the years, with local residents coming together to advocate for a wide range of causes, including environmentalism, LGBTQ+ rights, and social justice.

One of the defining moments in King Street’s history came in the late 1970s and early 1980s when the area became a centre for Sydney’s punk and alternative music scene. Venues like the Newtown Theatre (19131984) and the Lansdowne Hotel hosted countless gigs by local and international bands, helping to secure Newtown’s reputation as a hub of creativity and counterculture.
Today, King Street continues to evolve and adapt to
the changing needs and desires of the local community. New businesses and entertainment venues continue to open along the street, while long-standing institutions like the Enmore Theatre and Carriageworks remain popular destinations for locals and tourists alike. While the area has undergone significant changes over the years, King Street remains a vital and integral part of the Newtown community, reflecting the area’s rich history and diverse cultural heritage.

COVER FEATURE
Meet Fintan Magee, a prominent Australian street artist known for his large-scale murals, often depicting social and political issues. Originally born in Lismore, he began his career as a graffiti artist in Brisbane, in the early 2000s.
MMAGEE’S work is characterised by his use of vibrant colours, photorealistic images, and striking compositions that reflect an interest in environmentalism, migration, and social inequality. His murals can be found on buildings worldwide, including in Australia, the United States, Canada, and Europe, and have been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications.
Magee is considered one of Australia’s most talented and influential street artists and continues to create thoughtprovoking public artworks that challenge the status quo.
We caught up with Magee to learn more about his career.
Have you always been an artist? Where did it all begin?
“I have been working as a full-time artist for the last 12 years; before that, I sold weed, washed dishes, and worked in a call centre. My life skills outside of art are pretty limited.”
What would you credit for getting you where you are today?
“I grew up in Brisbane and studied at The Queensland College of Art. I worked very hard and got extremely lucky”.
What’s your relationship to Newtown/Enmore?
“I moved to Sydney from Brisbane in 2013 after I finished art school, where I lived in the Inner West for almost ten years.”
Do you have any future works planned for the Inner West?
“At the moment, I am designing two new works in the
area; one in Annandale and the other in Leichhardt.”
Could you tell us about your latest piece? Readers can find it on this issue’s front cover:
The work is titled, “Patye and William” and is located beside Carriageworks at Everleigh.
Is there a reason you used this location?
“I didn’t select the location; the City of Sydney commissioned it for this year’s Art and About program. Liza Bahamondes was in charge of location choice!
For me, it fit perfectly because I wanted to do a diptych of Patyegarang - c 1780s, an Australian Aboriginal woman, thought to be from the Cammeraygal clan of the Eora nation, a crucial part of the preservation of the Gadigal language - and William Dawes - an English Lieutenant and astronomer, who recorded a conversation with Patyegarang, which remains today the only known first-hand accounts of the Gadigal language.
So having two walls side by side worked perfectly. It’s one of my favourite walls that I’ve done in Sydney.”
Can you tell us more about the style used for “Patye and William”?
“The work is based on portrait photos I took through hammer effect glass. Because the work depicts two historical figures, this effect was about blurring or deconstructing their image; this acts as an allegory for the imperfect nature of memory and the way our stories get lost over time.”

WILLIAM DAWES was an astronomer, linguist, and officer of the Royal Marines who played a significant role in the early settlement of Sydney. His interactions with the Indigenous people of the area, particularly Patyegarang, have become a subject of interest for historians and linguists alike. Their relationship has been the subject of books, plays, and even an opera, as it highlights the importance of cultural exchange and the complexities of the first colonial encounters in Australia.
William Dawes arrived in Sydney in August 1788 as a passenger on The Sirius – the flagship of the First Fleet. He was one of the few members of the British expedition interested in learning about the local Indigenous people and their language. Dawes established a rapport with the Gadigal people, whose traditional lands spanned from South Head to Petersham in the west and from the Harbour to Botany Bay in the south. He learned their language and recorded their words and phrases, creating one of the earliest written records of an Australian Indigenous language.
It was during his work with the Gadigal people that Dawes met Patyegarang. She was a young woman from the Eora nation, which inhabited the land we now refer to
as Newtown. Patyegarang was also interested in learning English and soon became Dawes’ teacher of the Eora language. They spent time together, sharing knowledge about their respective cultures and languages. Their conversations were documented in Dawes’ notebooks which are catalogued in the NSW State Library.
Their relationship was more than a mere exchange of language. Patyegarang’s intelligence and beauty entranced Dawes, and he wrote about her in his journals in a way that suggested a romantic interest on his part. Patyegarang saw Dawes as a friend and teacher. She was not interested in a romantic relationship with him but appreciated his interest in her people and culture. Their interactions were cut short when Dawes was recalled to England in 1791. Patyegarang disappeared from the historical record, and there is, unfortunately, little known about her life after this period.
William Dawes and Patyegarang’s story is an integral part of Australian history and a reminder of the complexities of the colonial encounter. Their relationship highlights the power of language, cultural exchange, and the need to preserve Indigenous languages.

BROUGHT to the stage by the award-winning Outhouse Theatre Co, this intricately constructed drama pings with questions of consent not just sexual but personal, probing the murky moral terrain of the courtroom and the marriage bed, and putting Justice herself in the dock.
Ahead of the premiere Neighbourhood Media spoke to Director Craig Baldwin & star of the show Anna Samson.
Consent first captured the attention of Craig & the team at Outhouse Theatre when the play opened to glowing 5-star reviews at the National Theatre in London in 2017. Reflecting on that time Craig said, “[Consent] was wildly successful and, interestingly, it was written just before the #MeToo movement took off so it was also enormously prescient. It really captured the zeitgeist.”
Although the play has been on their mind for 6 years for various logistic reasons it is only now possible to bring this show to Sydney. Despite the delay, Caig believes Consent has only “grown more resonate” as time has passed.
“The global conversation around consent is in full swing… the play obviously deals with a very important and topical question around the law and whether it truly delivers justice, especially to survivors of sexual assault. The story is so powerful there. But I also think that description could mischaracterise the play as a preachy kind of ‘issue’ play.
CONSENT MAKES ITS AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE AT SEYMOUR CENTRE
By Jamie Apps
The writing is so smart, so surprisingly witty and so, so recognisably human - not remotely preachy.”
For actress Anna Samson this play is so important for several reasons.
“The script is so good,” Samson said before expanding on her answer. “It’s important to investigate the big, unanswerable questions of life on stage in the safety of a framework created by a deeply intelligent playwright… Consent shows us who we are and who we pretend not to be.”
While Consent was initially written by a British playwright to be performed in London the themes & topics unfortunately translate to Australia. When asked if they had to make any changes to make the show more relevant to Australia Craig said, “Sadly no. Our flawed legal system so completely mirrors the British system. Our class bubbles, our boy’s clubs, our fundamental misunderstanding of each other, even (especially?) in marriage - none of it is any different here really. These could just as easily be Sydney barristers. They even share our awful obsession with real estate!”
With the play touching on some very difficult topics, we asked Anna if it is a challenging play to prepare for & perform in.
18
After sell-out success at London’s National Theatre and a smash-hit West End run, Nina Raine’s acclaimed play, Consent, makes its Australian premiere.
“I wanted to play Kitty and do Consent because it is challenging, audiences will be asked to think about consent and relationships in complex ways.”
“I wanted to play Kitty and do Consent because it is challenging,” answered Anna swiftly. “Audiences will be asked to think about consent and relationships in complex ways. Nina is clever enough to give us the comedy of life within this. Human beings are funny creatures. ”
In closing our conversation with Craig & Anna we asked if they hoped the show would become irrelevant one day.
“It will never really be irrelevant,” said Craig. “I would hope we work out a much better legal process for rape survivors, and I hope we do more to educate, and more to incorporate consent practices into our culture - but the play is exploring further than just sexual consent. It is asking how to bridge the chasms of misunderstanding that happen between people. It is asking what constitutes justice, retribution, and repentance. It’s asking about empathy, and how we ever really know another person’s experience. And it is doing all that with such sparkling intelligence.”
As for Anna, she answered by saying, “We are all aware that our legal system fails the survivors of sexual assault in cruel, dangerous and baffling ways, again and again. This failure must be condemned and must change. Consent is a gesture towards a necessary conversation in this area.
“I would like the incessant need for women to become something in relation to others in order to be palatable to be a thing of the past. The way women are viewed most comfortably is as a wife or a mother. How these seem to be the things that implicitly hold the most (I won’t say value because that’s not correct) ease; ease for the patriarchy. Life is far more glorious than the little boxes we’ve created for ‘comfort’.”
