HISTORY

The Sydney Fringe Festival as we now know it began in 2010, however, there had been a previous version. From 1994 to 2002, a fringe festival headquartered in Bondi ran as a shadow event to the Sydney Festival.

It was shelved due to lack of funding and it took eight years before the void was filled by a newly minted Sydney Fringe Festival in 2010. The new festival was created by the Newtown Entertainment Precinct Association (NEPA), a collective of Inner West theatre companies which included The Edge, the Enmore Theatre, New Theatre, Newtown Theatre, Pact Youth Theatre, Seymour Theatre Centre, Sidetrack Performance Group, and Carriageworks.

SYDNEY FRINGE

After two years we’d rather all forget, Sydney’s artists and performers can finally come out of retreat and start doing what they do best — shaking their arts! There is no better showcase for the myriad talent we have in this city than the Sydney Fringe Festival and the 2022 program is bigger, broader, and ballsier than ever.

FOR a dozen years now, Sydney Fringe has been bringing together established and emerging artists representing the full genre spectrum: comedy, dance, theatre, visual arts, music, performance, experimental, undefinable.

“The great thing about Fringe is that you’ll either see the best thing you’ve ever seen in your life or you’ll see the worst thing you’ve ever seen in your life. Either way you’ll talk about it for ever,” says Festival Director and CEO, Kerri Glasscock.

Glasscock has been at the helm of the festival since 2013 and has seen both the program and the geographic footprint grow each year. Before COVID-19 hit, the festival was in venues across 29 postcodes around Sydney. The coverage has decreased this year, but Glasscock envisions the festival making back ground and expanding further beyond Greater Sydney very quickly.

The Fringe is an open-access festival and does not curate events as such; what it does is try to present those events in unique ways that add value for an audience. Shows may take place in large and small venues, outdoor locations, disused sites, precincts or in one of the various festival hubs.

“It’s about the experience — so for us it’s all about unused and under-utilised space,” explains Glasscock. “We love to take over unusual space in the city that people don’t normally get to go to or that you don’t normally see art in; creating new experiences, shaping the city in ways that, you know, you can’t have at other times of the year. That’s really what drives us.”

They are also very focused on ensuring that lesser-heard voices get a platform. Many artists, especially those whose work is not mainstream, savour the opportunities afforded by the Fringe which has a lot of elasticity for risk-taking.

“We’re wanting to ensure that Sydney audiences have new, fantastic experiences. About 80% of the work that takes place at Sydney Fringe are brand new world premieres.”

This year’s program includes a fascinating collection of offerings.

Cherry is a quirky, coming-of-age, coming-out, fan girl dedication to pop idol Katy Perry by Pacifika artist, Sarah Carroll.

“It’s a little bit of comedy, a little bit of cabaret, and a whole lot of Katy Perry. It’s essentially a work around how hearing “I kissed a girl” when she was 13 totally transformed her life,” explains Glasscock.

Carroll is currently being mentored by esteemed composer, cabaret artist, theatre maker, and multi-instrumentalist, Victoria Falconer who is also one of the festival ambassadors this year.

Cherry is playing at the Emerging Artist Sharehouse, a festival hub for new and emerging artists situated within the Erskineville Town Hall.

One of the truly innovative shows being in the program this year is Titanic: The Movie, The Play (not to be mistaken for the musical or for any other work of seriousness). Brisbane company, Act React is a comedic troupe that produces location-based, interactive, pop culture-inspired performances. In 2019 they created Speed: The Movie, The Play which was set on a real bus parked in The Rocks.

Titanic will be equally meta and hilarious in its presentation.

“They’ve built the whole front of the ship and it’s going to be at the Maritime Museum. And so, you sit around the ship and there’s actors playing all the characters and then they pull people out of the audience to play, you know, Rose or whatever,” laughs Glasscock.

Returning for its 15th anniversary performance is Six Women Standing in Front of a White Wall created by Canberra company, Little Dove Art Theatre. The work has travelled around the world and been performed by 30 different women. This performance features five women from different countries.

Taking its cues from Japanese Butoh, the work comprises six women standing in a row, simply dressed, moving responsively to stimuli including input from observers.

“It’s this incredible observation of the objectification of women’s bodies… you walk into a room that’s set like a gallery and the women are standing on plinths and they perform, but at some point you can interact with them and their bodies. It’s just… it’s amazing! You have to see it,” says Glasscock.

Each year, the Fringe furthers its agenda to become more inclusive. The 2022 festival is committed to holding space for First Nations voices in the arts, presenting Indie Yarns, a First Nations Q&A with members of The Sydney Fringe First Nations Advisory Panel (Redfern Community Centre - 3 Sept),an evening with celebrated Central Australian singer-songwriter Paul Ah Chee; and Dane Simpson’s award-winning stand-up comedy show Didgeridoozy, full of funny stories and big laughs.

As ever, the Sydney Fringe program is huge and might seem a little daunting. Glasscock’s suggestion, if you don’t know where to start, is to choose a hub. The hubs are multi-venue spaces designed around a theme or genre, e.g. cabaret, queer, emerging etc. Many include a bar and chillout area.

“Just head to a hub and settle in for the night…choose one that sounds pretty fantastic that you’re sure you’ll love — and then choose another couple that you maybe have no idea about!”

That should give you a taste of the Sydney Fringe experience.

BlackLux is a dance-based installation that has been simmering on low heat since its creator, Lucky Lartey was selected for the festival’s development program in 2020.

BlackLux uses black and white visual contrast in various manifestations to explore movement and the relationship between physicality and emptiness. In a space filled with geometric black and white shapes and manipulated by black light, moving bodies respond to each other.

Originally from Ghana, West Africa, Lucky Lartey is now based in Sydney. He uses his own cultural history as well as social observations to inform his dance and choreography which melds traditional and contemporary. Incorporating photography, video, and physical elements, his works are innovative and evocative, seeking not only to break new creative ground but to stimulate thought about race, culture, the environment, art, and ideology.

He has been involved in several arts events and festivals in Australia and his works have been performed internationally.

The work is being presented at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (NHSPA) in St George’s Hall, a magnificent, heritage listed building rarely accessible to the general public.

Bokkie Robertson is a young writer, director, and producer who is staking her territory on the arts scene. Having graduated from AFTRS in 2018, she has been involved with three feature films, created two web series, written and produced two short films, and a one-act play, and done tonnes of other impressive stuff like shovelling coal on a steam locomotive.

The Other End of the Afternoon is Robertson’s first full length play, inconspicuously slipping onto her resume by unanimously winning the 2021 Silver Gull Play Award. The award judges were effusive in their praise: “sensitive and intelligent…completely captures teenage angst, self-doubt and inner loneliness and bullying in a social media world… employs wonderful language, with excellent dramatic use of direct-to-audience address interspersed with dialogue…believable and relatable characters, it nails all the feelings you have as a teenager trying to work out the world. A lovely play, with a very touching and satisfying end.”

The Other End of the Afternoon is a young adult story about Clive, a boy who wears a top hat to school (in case he goes back in time), Bianca, the cool girl who bullies him (and might have a crush on him), Xavier, the world’s worst stepbrother (who wants to be a crime lord), Dylan, the school dropkick (who’s about to snap), and (perhaps) time travel.

It’s funny, provocative, moving, engaging and very entertaining.

The Unravelling is a musical experience more than just a performance. Winner of Best Music Show at the 2019 Melbourne Fringe, the show features composers and virtuoso musicians, Christina Higham and Victoria Cotta (collectively known as Nomads Like Us), two pianos and your imagination. Sitting at their respective keyboards, both instruments and minds in tune, Higham and Cotta produce a live soundtrack while a psychedelic film is projected on screen. They improvise freely, layering ideas and harmonies, integrating genres, visiting distant worlds, time travelling.

Christina Higham is a classically trained pianist, composer, music teacher and early childhood music specialist. Victoria Cotta is also a pianist, composer and combines music with childhood learning. Together, they use their technical skills, creative aptitude, and knowledge of the power of music to create an atmosphere rich with emotional complexity.

“We were approached by Triple J to record for Like a Version.

Anthony and Nick Webb who works with The Wiggles had the idea to do Elephant. The idea for ReWiggled came later.

“Our Like a Version was very popular and people told us it could do well on the Hottest 100 but we never imagined it would take out the top spot. A massive thrill!”

What’s next on The Soul Movers’ horizon: gigging, recording or taking a break?

“After the forced break of [Covid-19] lockdowns, I think we are like most performers, out there playing as much as possible, making up for lost time. We have shows booked into the next year in NSW, Victoria, WA and Queensland. We hope to get to SA in the next year. We love playing in front of audiences. We are excited to be playing in the ‘hood on 18th August outside the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre for their Winter Vibes program on Thursday 18 August. Then on Saturday 20 August at Sydenham Green as part of Inner West Council’s Edge Festival.

“We love playing festivals. A big one for us, which we’ve been waiting for two years to finally happen, is this year’s Splendour in The Grass, as part of an amazing line-up.

“We are in the process of writing songs for a new album, to be released next year. We have lots of great ideas for that one.

We always try to make each album special, from recording Bona Fide in a number of amazing and famous studios in the US (FAME, Muscle Shoals Sound in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Sun and Royal Studios in Memphis Tennessee) to Evolution with Garth Porter and Tony Mitchell [ex-Sherbert, 80s Australian rock royalty]. I’m sure this one will be special too.”

Anything he’d like to add?

“I’m very fortunate to be able to keep a connection to my old audience with The OG Wiggles and my new audience with The Soul Movers. Very often these audiences intersect. We are always getting people to The Soul Movers’ shows who come out of curiosity to see what Murray Wiggle is up to; stay because they enjoy the music; and leave as fans. We have an amazingly diverse audience, from late teen to 60-somethings, which I am very proud of.”

As the end of the nineteenth century approached, rapid development came to Newtown with farms and estates replaced by Victorian villas and terraces.

Some of the most impressive terraces are those along Warren Ball Avenue and Georgina Street, facing into Hollis Park. These homes survive to this date in almost original form”

BROCKLEIGH THE first in a row of eight Victorian Italianate terraces overlooking Hollis Park, Newtown.

John Icke Kettle, a magistrate, purchased a substantial amount of Newtown land in 1846 and subdivided a portion of it for housing in 1851. He held the remainder of land until his death in 1881 when his estate was left for his two daughters, Georgina and Mary Ann. Mary Ann married Robert Brock in 1853 and they had a son, George, in 1855.

By 1882, George had assumed the role of developer and further subdivided the family’s land into its present form.

George built eight terraces on a street known as Kettles Avenue from 1884 to 1885. George and his wife occupied the first terrace, Brockleigh, while his aunt Georgina Thruchley occupied the last terrace, the ‘bookends’ of the group. The Kettle Street name was changed to L’Avenue after completion.

All eight terraces were sold as one line in 1908 and the new owners operated them as boarding houses. They were sold again in 1914 and the street name was changed to Warren Ball Avenue, the name it is known by today. Warren Ball was an alderman and local Newtown businessman.

The homes changed hands as a group several times until the last owner to purchase the row in 1948 sold off the terraces individually over the next 12 years. Indigenous activist Charles Perkins occupied Brockleigh from 1997 until his death in 2000.

GEORGINA STREET While residing in Brockleigh, George Brock set about building another 15 terraces on the western side of Hollis Park, perpendicular to the first eight terraces. They were numbered 9–23 L’Avenue, the street known as Georgina Street today. The terraces were completed in 1889, and

once again the ‘bookends’ of the group are the standouts featuring turrets with decorative arched entries and an overall larger footprint. The balcony on each terrace is adorned with a cast iron lace frieze and balustrade. The terrace numbered 23 L’Avenue had stables accessible from the rear lane, which survive to this day. Historical records show a number of Brock family members occupied the terraces following completion. The family offered the terrace numbers 9–23 for auction as advertised by Raine & Horne in the Sydney Morning Herald on 29 November 1906 and by this time the address was known as Georgina Street. Records show that by 1915 all but one of the terraces was listed as boarding houses in the Sands Directory. Today, the 23 Victorian terraces built by George Brock are considered some of the finest and most sought after in the Newtown area, selling with multi-million dollar price tags.

And while of course there is still always more to do - in particular there is a real challenge at the moment with lots of vacant shops and struggling local creatives and artists, it’s a testament to our collective approach that we have dealt with these kinds of hard times in the past and achieved positive reforms.

I am committed to ensuring our creative, vibrant community is supported and protected – and will continue to ensure artists, performers, live music venues, galleries, and creative spaces are thriving not just surviving.

It’s been a challenging few years and our community knows all too well that the arts, entertainment and creative industries have been some of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 crisis and soaring costs of living. The pandemic saw many artists and crews lose their entire income overnight, as massive events were cancelled, theatres were shut, and art galleries closed their doors. While many people in the arts, entertainment and creative sectors were excluded by the NSW and Federal Government from any kind of dedi-

cated support or relief. Now, as the cost of living soars, we know this is being compounded by rent hikes, income support still not at a liveable rate, and local artists and creative spaces under threat.

These problems aren’t impossible to solve - there are solutions. In 1989, as tanks rolled through Tiananmen Square, a lone man, holding plastic shopping bags, stood in their path and entered history. Who was he, what was the story behind his protest, and what became of him? Chimerica is a story spanning two decades of complex US-China relations, told alongside personal stories that existed between the margins of history. Lou Fischer has taken on the exciting role of director for Chimerica at New Theatre, Newtown.

I

IT’S BEEN a rocky road these past two years, is this your first production back? How does it feel being back in action with live audiences and real rehearsals?

I was lucky enough to direct Glengarry Glenn Ross last year in between lockdowns and Neighbourhood Watch the year before.

Each time it has been a joy to get back in the room and prepare to share our work with a live audience. One thing it’s taught me is to never ever take anything for granted and to cherish any opportunity you have to work with creative and passionate people to make something special.

What initially attracted you to this production?

It’s a huge story, and I like telling big beautiful moving stories.

This one has a deceptively humorous tone, but, when I dug deep, as the characters do, the play unfolded and I was left breathless in the last pages as the plot twisted and the real legacy of Tiananmen and the magnitude of the devastating personal cost is revealed.

In three words, what can the audience expect from this production of Chimerica?

Casting is always a challenge — getting the right mix is critical and then juggling rehearsal schedules is a job all of its own. I think recent events in Hong Kong have reminded us how important this story is, and how we need to keep telling stories like these for those who cannot.

What’s your favourite thing about the venue, New Theatre?

New Theatre is a fantastic place to work. A beautiful open stage that is like a blank canvas waiting for the next artwork. We are so lucky to have our own rehearsal space as well. Most of all, however, is the people. Some come for one show and then move on to develop and grow their craft, some return again and again and others stay for the long haul giving so much time, talent and passion to the theatre.

ALEX THE ASTRONAUT has announced that she’ll be touring Australia to support her upcoming album How To Grow A Sunflower Underwater, and it’s her first Australian tour in almost four years. She’ll be performing live at City Recital Hall in Sydney on Friday August 19, flicking the switch on the iconic venue as part of the CRH Presents Switched On series. Supporting Alex is Gumbaynggir rapper Tasman Keith, who will perform tracks from his recently released debut album, A Colour Undone.

Alex’s second album, How To Grow A Sunflower Underwater is set to be released on July 22. It’ll feature recent singles Growing Up, Airport, Octopus and Haircut. On the album, seemingly mundane occurrences are imbued with sensitivity, humour and self-awareness — a haircut is a transformative experience, and a snorkelling trip becomes an exploration of personal growth.

Haircut is a celebration of Alex’s friends, while also capturing the ongoing journey of self-discovery that we’re all on. The Claudia Bailey-directed video for Haircut follows two friends that are figuring things out about themselves. It’s a message that is present throughout How To Grow A Sunflower Underwater.

However, they’re doing it together, which makes the process a

lot easier. It’s a beautiful clip, and one that captures the magic of Alex’s songwriting.

Speaking about the video for Haircut, Alex explains: “I loved Call Me By Your Name when I first saw it because it was presented as a love story first, and not just a ‘gay story’. In the same way, I wanted to show a story about gender just as a story about growing up. I think the biggest part of growing up is our friends. Claud the director made such a beautiful, bright narrative about two friends working out themselves side by side that fits the song perfectly.”

FOOD It’s a Sydney institution that brings together artisans and tea-lovers — switch the kettle on, the Sydney Teapot Show is back after a hiatus.

T

THERE’S a curious phenomenon that happens, almost uniformly, to visitors to the Sydney Teapot Show. One moment you’ll be admiring an exquisite ceramic sculpture and the next it’ll dawn on you that it’s a teapot… so how the hell does it pour?

Elisabeth Johnson — curator at Newtown’s Kerrie Lowe Gallery which hosts the annual exhibition, bar 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic — says that’s a moot point: here the teapot is an art object first and tableware second. “But, we do have one [award] section, which is the best pouring teapot,” she concedes.

The Sydney Teapot Show began more than 30 years ago as part of the Inner City Clayworkers Gallery in Glebe. When that shut down, it was offered to the Kerrie Lowe Gallery. “They didn’t want it to just disappear — it’s a Sydney institution,” says Johnson.

It fit well with the gallery’s mission to exhibit and promote work

by Australian potters, becoming an important show for them.

“People do come and travel from other states for it. We always have it during [Sydney] Craft Week too.”

It’s also bigger than the Clayworkers’ version because the Newtown gallery has more space than its Glebe counterpart did. Up to 300 teapots are on display in any given year, a “huge undertaking” to curate and a significant drawcard for collectors.

“We do get teapot fanatics,” Johnson mentions.

So, what can you expect? Everything from classic teapot shapes in fabulous glazes to weird and wacky animal forms. One award section, sponsored by heritage management organisation Comber Consultants, highlights the best archaeologically themed teapot. Another, supported by Keane Ceramics, recognises botanically themed ones. But, you can leave those categories to the expert judges — anyone who visits is entitled to vote for their favourite across the whole exhibition as part of the People’s Choice Award.

As for Johnson, she generally has a penchant for wood-fired ceramics, “but I love the decorative things that people do for the teapot show,” she says. “Potters continue to find new ways of expressing things. It’s fascinating, really.”

Her own tea habits are fairly traditional — she drinks black tea from fine white china — though she does mention an interest in teapots that started with her grandmother’s. “When I was very small, my grandmother had a very fine terracotta teapot, a small teapot and a set. So, I started off loving that from about four years old.”

Today, she sees it as part of an evolution from the swinging billy to an artform, one that brings people together to share a cuppa.

“Teapots have always been important in Australia and it’s fun to see people experimenting with the whole concept.”

The Sydney Teapot Show runs from 17 September to 16 October 2022.

NOODLE - An almost-5-year-old Persian catto with a white moustache that is reminiscent of Yosemite Sam. Noodle’s adoring mum Chloe adopted him on Feb 14 last year, and says he is the best Valentine she’s ever received. Noodle’s likes include cwtching on the couch, chin scratches, making ek-ek noises at the local birds out the window, and fish of all varieties. Dislikes: mum’s new automatic robot vacuum, which he vows to destroy one of these days.

NUGGET

NUGGET is a one year old mini dappled dachshund. She likes sun baking, pig ears, compliments, belly strokes, walks along the beach and meeting other sausage friends. She can regularly be found at various local pubs – the Erko, the Bank, the Courty and the Newie – pretending to be small and cute, but barking at all the big dogs. EVAN THE IGGY - Even is an Italian Greyhound and whose 1st B’day is coming up on July 11th! Despite the breed being known for anxiety, Evan is the most fierce, out there and energetic dog and nothing scares him. He takes on all the big dogs and has to greet absolutely everyone. If you walk past someone and don’t stop for him to greet you, he won’t move until he gets a pat and then you can continue. He has two settings - feral, or asleep. He bounces around and always wants to play, next minute fast asleep. He is also obsessed with the sun, lays in the back yard or any patch of light he can.

Evan lives in Enmore and he frequents many pubs and cafes and can be found at a range of dog parks! His number 1 pub would be the Warrenview, followed closely by the Vic and The Golden Barley.

WINTER is already here, and the temperatures are continuing to drop. For those of you who own pets, this means some special preparations need to be made to ensure their safety and comfort. Whether you own a cat, dog, or any other pet, they should not be left out in the cold when it comes to enjoying the winter season. So, what should you do to keep your pets warm this winter?

Warm coats and jumpers are essential to keeping your furry friends comfortable during the winter months. Go for practicality over style to ensure your pets are getting much needed warmth from their coats, especially if your pets are short haired or old. Coats with warming pads are especially beneficial for pets with arthritis as this will keep them extra comfortable in the cold. Not all pets will happily wear clothes as it is a strange concept for them.

The best method is to slowly introduce wearing a coat or jumper and, if your pet is still not comfortable, it is best to not force it as there are other ways to keep them warm during winter.

As their owner, you know your pet best and every pet has different preferences. If you struggle to bring your adventurous pet inside, make sure they have insulated shelter outside to keep them comfortable if they need it. A dog kennel must have a foam mat and blankets to ensure your dog is comfortable and retaining heat.

Additionally, painting your kennel a dark colour and placing it where it’ll get the most sun will also help keep it warmer for your pet. For inside time, make sure your pet has a comfortable bed with an added heat source such as heating pads or a microwaveable wheat bag.

Avoid electric blankets with wires or hot water bottles as your pet may chew through them.

When taking your pet for a walk, if you can feel how cold it is, they definitely can too. Try to avoid long exposure to the cold and wet. If your pet does become wet outside, it is essential that your pet is properly dried off as this adds to their overall drop in body temperature and can result in matting or skin issues. If you are concerned about your pet not receiving enough exercise, playing with toys inside will not only keep them active but also get their temperature rising.

As we said, you know your pet best and what makes them comfortable. It is important to keep a keener eye on your pets during the winter months. Look out for heat seeking behaviour and also consider if they could be overheating as well. If your pet has food and water and a comfortable spot to snuggle up with you then these cold months will not only be easy for them, but enjoyable too.

SHOPPING For the sustainably minded and ethically conscious, shopping is often regarded as a capitalist pursuit that’s rarely great for the planet. But what if your purchase could make the world a better place?

This neighbourhood corner store is a small but friendly community co-op where the shop buys minimally processed products in bulk – think fruits and vege, dry goods like grains, pasta, legumes and spices, plus liquid condiments and household items such as cleaning products. Customers purchase as much as they need using their own containers to minimise waste. Much of what they offer is organic and everything is ethically sourced, often direct from farmers and producers. As a not-for-profit co-operative, the shop is partially funded by members (who get a 10% discount) and run by volunteers (who get a 20% discount for a two-hour shift).

CAT BOUTIQUE (CATPROTECTION.ORG.AU) 85 ENMORE ROAD, NEWTOWN

Formerly an op shop, the Cat Boutique is now a dedicated retail space selling cat products with the proceeds directly benefitting the Cat Protection Society. Here you’ll find cat toys and accessories, food and treats with some merchandise for the felines’ human companions such as clothing, jewellery and stationery. Make no mistake: this is a store for cat lovers. Profits are funnelled into the charity’s cat welfare programs.

NOFFS OP SHOP (NOFFS.ORG.AU/SOCIAL-ENTERPRISES) 461 KING STREET, NEWTOWN

The Noffs Op Shop is part of the social enterprise arm of the Noffs Foundation, which helps socially disadvantaged and disconnected young people through drug rehabilitation, counselling and mentorship programs. As an op shop, the goods here are secondhand donations ranging from clothing, shoes and accessories to a small selection of homewares, books and toys. All proceeds go back to the Foundation.

RED CROSS OP SHOP (REDCROSS.ORG.AU/PLACES/RETAIL-STORES/ NEWTOWN) 359 KING STREET, NEWTOWN Focusing on a curated range of fashion, both vintage and modern, the Red Cross Op Shop is a boutique-style thrift store that offers both donated secondhand and retail overstock items. Come here for the clothing, but also browse its small selection of homewares, books and accessories. Funds go to the Australian Red Cross, which provides a range of services, from disaster aid and community assistance, to blood donation collection.

THE SOCIAL OUTFIT (THESOCIALOUTFIT.ORG) 188 KING STREET, NEWTOWN

A clothing label that is the antithesis of a fast-fashion sweatshop has its headquarters on King Street. A retail boutique is downstairs where you can try on and buy a range of styles, from colourful prints to smartly tailored pants, eye-catching totes to vibrant scarves.

The Social Outfit provides employment to people from refugee and new migrant backgrounds who make the ethical and sustainable clothing in the workroom above the store. They are fairly paid for their work and all additional revenue goes back to the charity behind the label so it can run training and education programs for that same demographic.

VINNIES (VINNIES.ORG.AU/SHOPS/VIEW/1392) 187 KING STREET, NEWTOWN Once upon a time, you had to steel yourself for a trip to Vinnies Newtown and prepare to rummage. These days, the staff and volunteers keep the sizeable store orderly. Expect a classic secondhand shopping experience with numerous racks of clothing but also a solid offering of homewares, books and even a substantial record collection. Sourcing from individual and brand donations, the stock is in good nick and, being Newtown, you’re likely to find something quirky without browsing for long. Revenue flows back to the St Vincent de Paul Society, a charity that provides a range of services, from disaster recovery to support for homelessness, addiction and food insecurity.
