HISTORY WELCOME TO GADIGAL LAND By Alec Smart

W

It’s an often-repeated claim that Aborigines completely disappeared from Sydney not long after European colonists arrived in 1788, due to disease and displacement. Not true.

“WELCOME to Gadigal land, welcome to Gadigal country” veteran Oz-rockers Midnight Oil sing in their chart-topping song Gadigal Land, their first new music in 17 years. The lyrics criticise European justice and the unwelcome problems that were forced upon the Aborigines when Warrane (Sydney Cove) was chosen for a British prison colony in 1788. But where is Gadigal Land? Social anthropologists and historians have determined this historic region extended from the southern shores of Sydney Harbour south to Botany Bay – which Indigenous Dharug-speaking peoples called Gadi or Cadi (C and G were often interchangeable, as were the letters B and P). The Gadigal (‘gal’ meaning ‘men of’, ie: ‘men of Gadi’, women were described with the suffix ‘gal-yan’) gathered foods, hunted and lived in this forested region, east from the Pacific Ocean to an approximate north-south interface that would now run between Pirrama (Pyrmont) and Bulanaming (Marrickville). This area was enclosed by the waterways of Port Jackson in the north, Kamay (Botany Bay) to the south, where the Gadigal overlapped with the Kamaygal clans, and along the north-eastern banks of Goolay’yari (Cooks River – derived from the word for ‘pelican’) where the Gadigal overlapped with the Wangal clans from further west. King Street in Newtown reportedly follows an old Aboriginal track that led (and still leads, via Prince’s Highway) to the western shores of Botany Bay, while Broadway and Parramatta Rd follow an historic path west. When Europeans established themselves in Warrane (Sydney Cove), there were an estimated two dozen Indigenous clans of around 25-60 members each across the Sydney region - now known as the Eora peoples. Between them they spoke 7 dialects of the endemic Dharug language group - the Gadigal spoke Biyal-biyal. Gadigal people of the coastal region were katungal (‘sea people’), primarily reliant on tidal river and harbour foods. These they gathered along the shoreline or hauled from the waters (people inland who hunted and trapped animals were known as paienbera ‘tomahawk people’). The men skewered their prey with garrara (barbed-end spears) and the women caught them with narrami (nets) and burra (fish hooks made from shells). Fish were often caught from nowie (bark canoes) and cooked fresh in the boats on hot coals atop clay slabs. Prime fishing spots were typically marked with fish, whale and sea creature petroglyphs carved into sandstone on the shoreline, communicating favourable marine prey to others via ancient symbols, which were maintained by designated clan stewards.

04

The April 1789 smallpox epidemic had a devastating effect on the Aboriginal peoples of Sydney and beyond. With almost no immunity to European diseases, over 50 per cent of the Indigenous residents around the harbour foreshores succumbed to the deadly contagion within a year. A common misconception is that Aboriginal peoples vanished from central Sydney in the wake of the smallpox epidemic. However, as the British military garrison expanded from a tent village into the neighbouring coves and west to Parramatta, felling trees and quarrying sandstone to build permanent dwellings, Aborigines regrouped with other clans. Thereafter they continued interacting with the European interlopers, albeit socially distanced in semi-permanent camps in locations such as The Domain, Woolloomooloo, Double Bay, Camp Cove and Bondi Beach, where they remained until long after British land acquisitions encroached upon their habitat and neutered their way of life. From here Aborigines provided essential services that them earned reliable incomes, many of them continuing saltwater activities in which they specialised, including fishing, gathering seafood, sealing and whaling, as well as finding employment utilising other traditional skills, such as police trackers, game rangers, shooting guides and domestic assistants. As the burgeoning colony built ships and docks around Cockle and Blackwattle Bays, Sydney became a major importer/exporter of goods. Until 1834, fisheries products – principally whale oil and sealskins - dominated the primary exports of NSW, which relied heavily upon Aboriginal knowledge and skill in sourcing the marine life.

Join our community @ Thereafter wool (first exported to Britain in 1821) took over as the primary export, increasing to an annual 6.4 million kilograms in 1850. Agriculture supplanting marine industries revealed the success of the pastoralist ‘squatters’ in their colonisation of Australia’s hinterland. The squatters literally occupied territory not yet surveyed or legally available to them, clearing forests to establish vast sheep and cattle farms. This frontier expansion came at the expense of the Indigenous inhabitants and the wildlife they relied upon for food and clothing. When convict transportation ceased in 1840, Sydney’s population was recorded at 35,000, but the discovery of gold in Ophir, near Orange, in Feb 1851, triggered a gold rush. This brought a massive influx of tens of thousands of speculators and other opportunity seekers to Australia, swelling the national population to 75,000 by the 1870s, substantially increasing Indigenous Australians risk of attack and displacement. Attempts were made to safeguard Indigenous people from the mass expansion of the city by placing them under government supervision in various ‘protectorates’ and state-sponsored missions. However, Europeans encroached and built on their semi-permanent encampments (the aforementioned Domain, Woolloomooloo, Double Bay, Camp Cove and Bondi Beach). From the 1850s onward, most of Sydney’s city-dwelling Aborigines were effectively subsumed into the British way of life. The first Indigenous boy to receive a Christian burial in a British cemetery was Tommy, an 11-year-old with no surname who died of bronchitis in Sydney Infirmary. However, that wasn’t until 18 March 1863. (Tommy is believed buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave in Camperdown Cemetery alongside bushranger Charles Ross, 57,

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

who was hanged on 18 March at Darlinghurst Gaol for highway robbery and attempted murder). Tommy’s name was carved into a stone monument with three other Aborigines in 1944, commemorating “the whole Aboriginal race.” A large exhibition of Aboriginal Sydney, including spears, throwing sticks, artefacts and artworks, was held in the Garden Palace in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens near Macquarie Street, which was built for the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. Tragically, on 22 Sept 1882, a fire destroyed the building and its contents, taking with it assorted government records, the results of the 1881 Census, and disastrously, according to a plaque in the Botanic Gardens: “every publicly owned artefact of the Aboriginal tribe, Eora, who inhabited the area before European settlement.” Nevertheless, Aboriginals’ ongoing contribution to Australia’s culture, arts, sporting achievements and social outlook has been tremendous, and this will be examined in our next Indigenous history

Marsh’s works have been censored several times: from fundamentalist Christians blacking out his George Pell and George Michael paintings in Newtown and Erskineville; to the covering-up of his mural of a handcuffed George Pell praying in front of a demonic figure near St Mary’s Cathedral; to Redfern Police instructing City of Sydney to paint over his burning police car piece in a Redfern back lane. The latter was painted to commemorate the 2004 death of Aboriginal boy TJ Hickey (who died in suspicious circumstances at the Waterloo flats after a police pursuit). Do you have an estimate on how many times your paintings have been defaced or deleted? “I think the count is at 6 murals destroyed. However, they have a digital life on social media that far outweighs their physical lives, so when someone paints over my works it amplifies them x1000 times!” GQ voted Scott Marsh ‘Man of the Year’ in 2019. Marsh appeared at GQ’s awards ceremony wearing a balaclava. Do you prefer to remain anonymous, like UK graffiti artist and fellow satirist Banksy, so you’re not easily publiclyidentifiable? “I won GQ ‘Agenda Setter of the Year’. There are a lot of reasons I hide my identity and they change as time goes on. Originally it was because I was still quite a prolific graffiti writer. More recently, I receive a lot of threats and other bullshit from people in opposition to my murals, so for me it’s become a lot safer and less stressful to continue to keep my identity to myself.” What murals are you preparing for 2021, or do you wait until something controversial appears in the media and work from fresh inspiration? “My works are very reactionary. it’s usually a maximum 3-4 days between me deciding to paint about an issue and a finished

These modern times are pretty fertile grounds for political satire so I’m sure I’ll have plenty to paint about!” How do you go about sourcing walls for your murals, do you rely on inner-city residents or business owners to donate the sides of their premises, or do you choose publicly-accessible wall spaces? “I’m always looking for walls. Sometimes people will email me with an offer of their property’s wall, or sometimes I see a wall I like and go knock on the door…”

A collection of human stories found on the ground. FOUND By Laura is a personal collection of handwritten notes that have literally been found on the ground over sixteen years of collecting and turned into an exhibition of life. From love letters to break-up notes and naughty shopping lists, founder Laura turned this little collection into an art exhibition. “I wanted people to experience the notes the way I do. See the ink, creases, the dirt,” Laura explained. Since then, she has produced several exhibitions, made a coffee table book and a range of other merchandise she now sells online. The origins of Found by Laura go back to 2005 when she found a shopping list written on a bright orange Post-It note at Carlingford Woolworths. One side had a basic shopping list written on it and the other side had something more personal: «Andrew - App Drug + Alcohol counsellor 1st Feb.» Laura instantly felt a connection to the writer and just couldn’t bring herself to throw it away. Not long after that she found another note on a blank receipt that said «I love you BeBe, your angel», and then another two that read «do me slowly» and «you would look good on me.» The one note that really resonates with Laura is one she found on the floor of a New York subway in 2007. It was a piece of note paper with beautiful handwriting on it that read «Jealousy, denial of pleasure, denial of happiness, satisfaction, development, aware of others’ resentment.” At the bottom it read «I often refuse to admit how I am feeling because it is so painful.» Reflecting on it now, Laura knew she was going through her own personal pain and struggle so this raw piece of someone else’s life, just lying there on the dirty subway floor, really spoke to her. “It’s the perfect note that encapsulates everything I love about finding these gems,” Laura revealed. “The juxtaposition of the beautiful handwriting, the location of it in the subway and the words. I often wonder how this person is doing today.” It would seem that becoming an art curator was on the cards for Laura, who herself has a background in the arts. She is a television editor selling stories for a living. And it’s the stories that intrigue her most as she tries to envisage the lives of the note writers.

“For us, it’s a chance to get to know some of our most vulnerable neighbours and make a real impact in their lives. It is so great when we hear that people we’ve met and got to know are now in a more stable living situation.”

“When I saw someone on the streets before, I was nervous and felt guilty, I put my head down and walked away because I did not know what to do. Now I am more confident to talk to someone and at least smile. I know we all need human interaction, smile and say hello and it could make their day.”

We caught up with Liz Yeo and Georgia Carter of Newtown Neighbourhood Centre this month and heard about their fantastic initiative, The Newtopian Outreachers Program, designed to tackle homelessness. THE Newtopian Outreachers program involves volunteers taking part in a weekly outreach where they engage with people experiencing homelessness. The teams are able to offer assistance and this can include how to access temporary crisis accommodation, where to get meals or where to find other local support services. This project aims to create a sense of community and change perceptions and assumptions about people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers are encouraged to share their journey with friends and family to help raise awareness and grow a network of informed community members. Our goal is to create a more caring, connected society who advocate for both the practical housing and service needs and the importance of community connection for people experiencing homelessness. In 2018 we first launched our Newtopian Outreach program in Newtown. This program is now in its fourth year and has trained 33 passionate and committed locals to actively address homelessness in Newtown. In 2020, we had the opportunity to expand the program and launch in Sydney CBD. Despite a delay to the training process due to COVID-19, 38 volunteers were able to participate in multiple outreaches at the end of 2020. We are excited to be recommencing volunteer outreach for a

THE NEWTOWN BLESSING BOX

L

Something Good that Came out of COVID-19. LOCATED on the Corner of Bedford Street and Station Street, you may have noticed a community pantry that sprung up over COVID-19. It’s called the Newtown Blessing Box, and it was the inspiration of Maureen Lee who came up with the idea to make a gender-neutral community food pantry where the locals could “take what they need and give what they can.” In its simplest form it is a cupboard with shelves. What’s special about it is that its true value comes from how it

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

resonates with the community who bring it to life. In essence, it is a reflection of love, abundance, sharing, kindness, awareness, openness, connection and the heart of the inner west. The Blessing Box turns 1 year old on March 25. Since its start up, the Blessing Box has been hugely popular with not only locals contributing and benefiting but also restaurant owners, families with loved ones at RPAH, RPAH nurses, local businesses, families and friends from around Australia, students, volunteers, local politicians, NSW Parliament members, journalists, artists, bloggers and even people from overseas. In Maureen’s view, the response has been more powerful than even she could have imagined. The community spirit and generosity that has been nurtured at the Newtown Blessing Box is phenomenal and has gone beyond just food donations, it has also boosted community morale and a sense of connection. In fact, she goes so far as to suggest that the Newtown Blessing Box has become part of the “essential exercise” routine for many people, who pass by to smile, connect and read the messages of hope left. She says “...the mental health benefits of community belonging, connectivity and feeling as if the community has your back has been beautiful to witness during such a difficult and lonely time for so many. “ The Blessing Box is a true blessing and if you are in the area and would like to contribute or could benefit, be sure to head drop by.

HOW did you get into burlesque performing? I became very fond of the pin up and vaudevillian culture as I left highschool, always sketching idols like Bettie Page and Josephine Baker, and the more I began to research them, I stumbled across something called called ‘Tease-O-Rama’ which featured burlesque performers from the 1950’s dancing for the camera in front of a red curtain and a sign with their name on it. I loved how charismatic the dancers were, how comfortable they were in their bodies, the way they danced, their costumes etc. I was totally entranced! After leaving high school I was really eager to continue performing; I loved dance and drama, and this felt like a really exciting way for me to blend those loves together and apply my own personal taste. I started off by doing lessons with a Sydney legend, Sheena Missdemeanour (who runs ‘Sydney Vintage Dance Studio’), and created my own little act in my bedroom. I then started working as a stage kitten in order to understand the ins and outs of shows and eventually built up the courage to ask for a spot. The rest is history! How often do you perform Burlesque, and where can people see you? Due to the pandemic, performances are only just starting to pop up again! I just recently completed a show (which will return in July) called ‘Undressing Hollywood’ where I MC’d for the first time, which was very exhilarating! I had to learn script and accent and all! More shows will pop up soon, including Mr Falcon’s Burlesque, Royal Heart Review, Bang Bang Variety Club and Heaps Gay - so keep an eye out for those ones! What does the future look like for Miss Rosie Rivette? SHE IS MAKING A COME BACK BABY! I felt as though I lay dormant for a while just doing a few gigs here and there, but I’m finally feeling inspired again and have a new act in the works, so watch this space! Art modelling has also become a big part of my

life lately too, as well as studying. I’m finally at a point where all my paths seem to be merging together, which is such a relief. I would love one day to create a queer-friendly practice that heals and empowers people through dance and creativity.

A public space providing emerging artists with an opportunity to showcase their work INNER West Council’s ArtSeat has been delighting, intriguing and challenging Newtown’s residents and visitors since September 2011. The ArtSeat is a permanent structure in Newtown Square that provides local, emerging and established artists with a space where experimental and non-commercial art can be showcased. The very first artwork in 2011 featured striking photographic images created by new media artist r e a, of the Gamilaraay people. The first for 2021 was by Kieran Butler to mark Mardi Gras. Keiran’s work (pictured), This is but a horizon we are working towards, was a “visual and aural beacon where audiences can meet to feel hope, take care, and be with their community.” They said the artwork “is a reminder that as a community and individuals, LGBTQIA+ people still have a long road ahead to a future where we are able to freely live our truths. “This road moves toward a horizon that is unknown and constantly changing and this constant change is OK. Late last year, Lynne Fairy’s work was installed in December at the ArtSeat. Her work, Snapshot of Australia Street 2010 - 2016 A love letter to Newtown, comprised her poem and photographs by Leigh Howlett, taken in Australia Street Newtown, when they both lived there between 2010 and 2016. “This is a true story of the people and animals that we passed on our daily walk up Australia Street on our way to the station,” Lynne said. Next time you’re in Newtown, make sure you check out the ArtSeat, adjacent to Newtown Town Hall on King Street, opposite the railway station.

12

The latest ArtSeat is a commentary on how Sydney perceives its creative community, and asks, “Who is the beating heart of Sydney, the creative-creators or profit-makers?” Creative Space, Creative Capital by Elia Bosshard is an adstyle poster that queries what creative space, and creativity itself, actually is. Elia has used authentic Sydney real estate signage, designed to capture attention like a property ‘for-sale’ sign. “Sydney is one of the most expensive cities to live and work in the world,” she said. “For local artists, it is an ongoing struggle maintaining access to the cultural centre, which paradoxically, thrives on and profits from the arts community.”

Neighbourhood Media caught up with musician Swaré, a local Inner-West resident, purveyor of super smooth tunes, and star of a recent viral Tik-Tok video about knob cheese.

HOW good is the Inner-West?! How has your life changed since living here? I’ve been in the area about two years now. I always wanted to move here, it’s just got so much more going on; interesting events, venues and people. I think the biggest change has been stylistically, in every way. From the clothes that I wear to the music that I make. You feel like you’re in the middle of something really exciting over here. What are some of your biggest milestones as Swaré? Last year there were heaps of firsts, which was awesome. I landed my first spins on commercial radio, which was a huge milestone. I also started selling merch as well, which was really exciting for me, then seeing those people out and about in the real world, wearing a shirt or something, that was so surreal! What is your most memorable moment from a gig? There’s been a few.. I think my favourite are things involving the crowd. One night we had someone down the front stop the show and announce he was going to down a jug of beer. So we waited patiently and sure enough, he did! We also had to break between songs and ask if someone could grab my piano player a drink from the bar. Someone up the back agreed and this drink appeared on stage! I meant to pay the guy back but never found him. That’ll haunt me forever. We’ve recently stumbled across some of your Tik Tok’s (which are hilarious) -- how did all that start? I got it during lockdown, like I think a lot of people did, then accidentally made some funny videos that people seemed to really enjoy. Then after I realised how powerful it is I put a lot more time into it. It’s basically where Instagram was five or six years ago, so I wanted to jump on it whilst it’s still got that audience-building

potential. And it’s also just a great community as well, people seem to be a lot friendlier there than most social media platforms. Please, explain this knob-cheese Tik Tok? So, when I was a little kid I’d go grocery shopping with my dad on the weekends and we used to buy those mozzarella cheeses, the round ones with the little bump on them. And as a kid I’d call it ‘knob cheese’, because I was a kid and didn’t realise that was probably pretty weird. And whenever we’d go down the dairy aisle I’d ask my dad “can we get some knob cheese today”. So I posted that story on TikTok and people seemed to really enjoy it! Where do you get your inspiration from? Mostly from Michael Jackson initially, then through my parents’ music: lots of Bowie, some Queen, the Rolling Stones. Years later a friend introduced me to electronic music which I actually loathed, but then quickly fell in love with. Artists like Justice, Daft Punk, all that French electro stuff really shaped my sound and the direction I wanted to go in. What tips would you give to anyone else considering giving full-time music a crack? I think overall is patience. It’s the longest road, so don’t expect anything to come quickly. But as well as that I think you need to be really careful how you measure success. For me making the switch from ‘how many streams do I have?’ to ‘how many fans do I have?’ was really important. You want to focus on building a community of people who like you and your music, so get involved in the scene, go to gigs, meet people! What are the details of your next gig? I’ll be heading to Brisbane in May, which I’m really, really excited about! I’ll announce more details on those shows soon.

A

A Sydney institution for theatre goers.

AS the oldest continuously producing theatre company in New South Wales, the New Theatre has seen its fair share of talent in its history, spanning more than 88 years. One Australian actress has had a long association with the theatre and that’s Helen Tonkin. Helen has many talents, including screen and theatre, including screen and theatre, but in her words she is really a “creature of the theatre”, and her association with the New

14

Theatre has allowed her to share this passion. Helen rehearsed her first play there as an actress at the end of 1999, and has since performed in several productions. Her last production at the New Theatre was When The Rain Stops Falling, and she is now in preparations for Significant Other, showing in June. “I have directed two of my favourite directorial ventures at The New,” Helen revealed to 2042, “Equus and Jerusalem, which, to my surprise, got seven Sydney Theatre Award nominations! “I have also been a play assessor there, and I am currently an Artistic Associate, which I have been for a number of years. “I really enjoy that position working with Artistic Director Louise Fischer and the other tireless workers on the Management Committee.“ Of all the theatres where Helen has worked in Sydney, the New Theatre is easily her favourite, and she is proud of its achievement in becoming a major professional development theatre. It has produced numerous directing and acting graduates, many of whom have gone on to spread their wings and be snapped up for Indie and Main Stage productions. Helen is also in charge of The Silver Gull Play Award (sponsored by The Buzz Sydney), which the New Theatre took over from Subtle Nuance Theatre last year. She has been a judge for the award since its inception (now in its seventh year) and told 2042 she is delighted to be entrusted with this role. You can see Helen in Significant Other at The New Theatre, June 2- 26, 2021.

It’s never been more important for living spaces, and now home offices, to bring some Zen into our lives.

MIND

Recent studies have shown that mindfulness is one of the strongest ways to overcome any stress or anxiety you may be facing in your life. Whilst some find mediation and mindfulness a walk in the park (literally!), others don’t!

Meditation 101 Remember, practice makes perfect but here’s a simple 2 minute routine to get started. It could be introduced to your morning routine, before dinner - but consistency is key: Prepare to sit still for a few minutes, sit wherever is comfortable! Close your eyes and focus on your breath for 2 minutes. depth/shallowness, how it impacts your ribs/stomach/body. If your mind wanders - bring your focus back to your breathing. Growing your salad garden in a small space is easier than you might think.

ARE you spatially challenged, but still want to grow your own salad garden? Well, it is possible and there are a couple of varieties of edible plants that do particularly well in small spaces and pots, and we’ve put a collection together for you for inspiration. HERBS

Herbs do not take up much space at all and can be a great addition to a salad or pasta dish. They also do not require much work and with a little love and care can produce a stunning display on your balcony garden. As we are approaching the cooler months, be sure to choose perennials (plants that can live three or more sessions) as they tend to be more resilient through the cold weather. This includes herbs such as thyme, chives, mint, oregano, lavender and tarragon. Give your herbs good drainage, regular water and sun. Some herbs prefer more sun than others, such as basil, chives, oregano and rosemary. More delicate herbs such as parsley and chives should be positioned where they get a mix of shade and some sun. Be sure to get yourself some organic bug spray to look after their delicate leaves, though, as caterpillars and other pests can quickly strip your herbal beauties overnight. For a homemade remedy try a few drops of dishwashing liquid mixed with one litre of water and spray away. Do not use dishwashing liquid or soap that contains degreaser or bleach. CHERRY TOMATOES Plants that grow up rather than out are also a great option for small places, which is why cherry tomatoes are tops in our opinion. The other great thing about these tasty little bubbles of red is they are as happy as can be in a tub, so long as you remember to water them. Cherry Tomatoes do prefer the warmer weather though, so be sure to give them plenty of sun and during the winter keep them in a greenhouse type environment as they generally don’t like too much cold weather, especially frost. They can grow indoors, although you may find they are more productive fruit wise, growing outside. Try a home-made garlic and pepper spray for your tomatoes to

16

protect them from insects. Start by blending 2 bulbs of garlic with two hot peppers. Add ½ cup water and blend again for 5 minutes, then strain using a cheesecloth. Dilute this mixture before using by adding ¼ of the mixture to 4 litres of water. CLIMBING BEANS Climbing beans, as the name describes, are great for balconies and generally grow from 2 feet to 6 feet with climbing support, depending on the variety. Choose from dwarf varieties as they do better in pots. These scrumptious little beans need around five to six hours of sunlight a day. If you want to encourage them to grow vertically, position them so they are growing up towards the sunlight. You can also clip the top of the runners to encourage more shoots to sprout out, producing more beans. Climbing beans don’t mind the cooler months, and you should cut or snap the pods off rather than tear them. Picking off a few less-mature pods is a great way to encourage the plant to produce more pods. Again, use the aforementioned dishwashing spray and, for a stronger effect, soak a couple of crushed garlic bulbs in the mixture for three to four hours before spraying. LETTUCE LEAVES Lettuce leaves are a must for your balcony salad and the good news is they can be grown year-round. The pot is the key to good lettuce, as its roots like plenty of space, so choose one at least 15-30cm high. A good quality soil mix that retains water is also important. Loose lettuce leaf types, such as red or green oak lettuce, spinach, rocket and alfalfa, grow best in pots. Lettuce grows well in around 6 hours of sun a day, but can also tolerate some shade, especially when it gets really hot. Most leaf lettuce will reproduce after you cut the leaves two or three times. Be sure to cut a few inches above the soil level and continue to water. Harvest in the morning when the leaves are cool and crisp. Slugs love lettuce, so try placing some cracked eggshells around the base as a deterrent, and use the above-mentioned detergent spray for the leaves.

The International Grammar School Grows ever greener.

THE International Grammar School (IGS) was recently awarded the Eco-Schools Bronze Award for achievement in Education for Sustainable Development, for improving the environmental performance of the school and the wider community. The IGS Sustainable Futures club, made up of students in primary and high school, have worked enormously hard to improve the School environment and to address global issues. IGS Head of Sustainability, Carmelo Fedele, said “the Bronze Award is an important milestone that recognises the beginning of our journey to make IGS more sustainable. "In order to achieve an award from Eco Schools, students were required to conduct an Environmental Review, a Baseline Survey and complete the application form. We had to demonstrate that we had made measurable progress in at least one of the EcoSchools themes." Throughout March, IGS took part in a number of initiatives to help the planet. Students from early learning, primary and high school participated in Clean Up Australia Day. They spread their inspiring messages across the entrance to the school, encouraged community members to make green

pledges, read books on how to take care of the planet, and cleaned up parts of the school and nearby streets. Later this month, the school will switch off the air conditioning of the main campus for a week in celebration of Earth Hour, which contributes to approximately 70 per cent of the school’s energy use. The Sustainable Futures group meets every few weeks to build deeper sustainable action to reduce waste, save energy, increase biodiversity, promote clean water, consider activism and reduce resources. Their next target is to work towards achieving the Eco-Schools Silver Award, with a major goal to be a ‘lighthouse’ school for sustainability. “I am so proud of our students' determination and passion for a cleaner, more sustainable world,” said IGS Principal Shauna Colnan.

Former Newtown High School of Performing Arts’ student plays Queen Iduna in a new production of Frozen the Musical.

FROZEN the Musical, the hit Broadway theatre musical, is now playing at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney and features a local lass from Newtown in the role of Queen Iduna from the Enchanted Forest. The new touring production of Frozen the Musical brings the Arendelle kingdom to life in Sydney, and in this production there is a special link to Newtown. Tanika Anderson, a former Newtown Performing Arts High School student, has been cast in the role of Queen Iduna, as well as performing in the ensemble. Based on the 2013 film written by a trio of Oscar® winners, Disney’s Frozen the Musical features music and lyrics by the creators of the film score - Kristen Anderson-Lopez and EGOTwinner Robert Lopez - and a book by Jennifer Lee, the film’s screenwriter and director (with Chris Buck). Frozen won 2014 Oscars for Best Song (Let It Go) and Best Animated Feature. Tanika Anderson’s mother is Chinese-Singaporean and her father is Australian with Scottish roots - and Tanika is deeply proud of the diversity in her family. Tanika’s favourite Disney movie is Pocahontas because of her culture and ethnicity. “It was unlike anything I had ever seen,” she revealed, “so I felt like I could relate to her and just wanted to be her!”

When Tanika auditioned for the Australian production of Frozen, she said it felt only right to sing Colours of The Wind from Pocahontas, the 1995 Academy Award winner for Best Music (Original Song), as she was able to tell that story as her own truth. She feels honoured to be a part of Frozen the Musical because of the diversity that it represents, and wishes she had the opportunity to watch more performers that looked mixed-race like her when she was a little girl. Frozen originally opened on Broadway in New York on March 22, 2018 and broke four St. James Theatre house records, including the largest advance ticket sales in Broadway history at the time of opening. Like the Disney musicals that have come before it, such as The Lion King and Aladdin, Frozen the Musical is a full evening of theatre running over two hours. Frozen will enthral audiences of all ages with its spectacular dance numbers, sweeping sets and incredible costumes (which were all hand-made in Sydney!). Frozen is playing at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney until 23rd May, when the show relocates to Melbourne at Her Majesty’s Theatre in June.

TAKE THE PLEDGE FOR

PLANET EARTH

Hey kids, are you looking for a way to help save the planet?

EVERY year we eat and manufacture more food and products than we actually need, and push planet earth to its limits. If we all made some simple changes, we could make a difference and help reduce greenhouse emissions, combat climate change and even reverse some damage we have already done. Changes such as: Not Waste Water: Reduce your shower time, turn off the tap when you’re not using it and water the garden early or late in the day. Save Energy: Turn off the lights, TV, and other electrical appliances when you don’t need them, or you’re not in the room. Recycle Paper & Bottles: Put your rubbish in the right recycle bin when out and at home. Carry your reusable water bottle instead.

Not Waste Food: Only take food that you intend to eat and not leave any waste. Eat More Vegetables & Fruit: Eat less meat, and instead swap it for vegetables and fruit. Be Kind to Animals: Encourage your parents to only buy RSPCA-approved meats and Cage-Free produced eggs. Reduce Emissions: Ride your bike or walk to school, or carpool with another family in your neighbourhood. Donate Old Clothes & Toys: Anything you no longer use or have grown out of, donate to a local charity. Are you ready to take, act and sign the pledge to help save our planet? Use this pledge as your daily reminder, so everyone in your family can get involved. Let us know how you go!

PETS With Sydney’s inner west becoming more urbanised, apartment-living is on the rise and as a result, there’s been a spike in the popularity of exotic pets. Dr Emma Hall from The Wild Vet Animal Hospital in Glebe shares her wisdom about weird and wonderful creatures in the home.

T

THE term ‘exotic’ refers to any small animal other than a dog or cat - from rabbits to birds, and reptiles too! Exotic pets require minimal space and are relatively low maintenance. For example, bearded dragons are every From a python with a testicular tumour bit as interactive as a dog, and if to a canary with a broken leg or a rat with their terrarium is set up properly, a dental abscess, the wild vet is equipped they are very easy to treat anything that comes to care for. Where cats can through their door be quite independent, parrots or rabbits make excellent companions and can be quite affectionate, forming strong bonds with their owners. once every week or two, and they won’t hold it against you for not being able to find time for twice-daily walks! Many owners ask about the veterinary care required by ‘wild pets’. Just like dogs and cats, they can develop health issues too. Although they appear stoic and are masters at hiding signs of pain, they experience every bit of pain and discomfort other species do - which is where we can help. From a python with a testicular tumour to a canary with a broken leg or a rat with a dental abscess, The Wild Vet is equipped to treat anything that comes through their door. At the Wild Vet, the veterinary staff have a passion for exotic pets and specialise in their treatment and care. They love the dynamic aspect of treating a wide range of animals, where one day they are attaching a prosthetic beak to a parrot, and the next performing emergency surgery on an inland taipan (the world’s most venomous snake) – which they recently did in December! In addition to treating the pets of our regular customers, The Wild Vet tends to injured and orphaned wildlife. A portion of the clinic’s profits go towards providing wildlife treatment and ensuring that Australia’s native animals aren’t left behind. Dr Emma Hall, The Wild Vet’s founder, can often be seen taking home flying fox pups or baby possums to care for overnight.

TIGGER

THIS little lady is a very important doggo - she has a job as Head of Security and Client Services at the Mortgage Choice office, and even has a mural on Dickson St done by local artist Sindy Sinn! She likes to bark at nearly everything and everyone - especially those in fluoro or children on bikes, but won’t worry, she’s just doing her job - behind the bark she’s very kind and gentle. If you’re planning on stopping by for a visit - we suggest you bring some treats to get on her good side!

JEFF

7 YEARS old and the self-proclaimed King of Camperdown park. He’s there most days at least three times a day. He takes one of two toys with him: a stuffed bunny is the current favourite but he also has a unicorn who is a quadruple amputee that also sometimes makes an appearance. The photo of him in a bee suit is next to what was his favourite toy, named Bizzee-bee, but it got stolen by a Labrador. While most whippets cost over $1000, Tigger was given away after it was proven his rabbit hunting skills proved to be nonexistent. (His original name was Rydell, but we changed that quickly!)

MY name is Jeff and I’m a mini bull terrier’s living with my two mums and fur-sis Penelope the cat. Contrary to what people have heard about bull terriers, I’m actually a very lazy little potato (apart from the odd zoomie). My ideal day would be a visit to The Vic for some chippies, a lie in the sun at Enmore Park and then a big snooze. When I’m home alone I’ve been known to get creative with my snacking choices: wine glasses, leather wallets (Chanel no less) nothing is off limits.. Except for Penelope, please keep that furbag with claws WELL away from me.

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

LIFE is pretty tough living with a big-headed bull terrier, but I know I’m superior - I am a purebred Bermese after all. I also know, despite our 20kg size difference, he’s petrified of me - especially when I’ve wrapped up a big session of biting his ears, chasing his tail and being generally intimidating. I’m always highly amused when our mums force us together to take a photo - he never looks impressed.
