‘‘For some reason, the Fringe was cancelled in 2020 (!). It did, however, participate in Global Fringe, a four-week international digital festival run in cooperation with festivals in Brighton (UK), New Zealand, San Diego (US), Stockholm (Sweden) and Hollywood (US).’’

In 2011, Richard Hull took over as Cre ative Director. In 2012, he introduced an open-access model which allowed for edg ier, more esoteric performers and artistic risk-taking in the program. That model and philosophy has endured.

THE 2010 Sydney Fringe Festival was based around the Inner West with Newtown as its hub. Kris Stewart was the inaugural Creative Director. He had vast experience in the realm, including having run the New York Musical Theatre Festival. His vision was to model Sydney’s Fringe on the “edgy fringes of Dublin and New York, with a downtown, urban aesthetic.”

For some reason, the Fringe was cancelled in 2020 (!). It did, however, participate in Global Fringe, a four-week international digital festival run in cooperation with festivals in Brighton (UK), New Zealand, San Diego (US), Stockholm (Sweden) and Holly wood (US).

The launch party had a 1920s theme complete with a speakeasy lounge and gin bar. Erskineville Town Hall was the festival hub and featured the Coopers Festival Bar and two perfor mance spaces.

In 2021 the Fringe Festival team took a well-earned rest…NOT! There was no festival that year, but they worked as hard as ever raising money to support artists impacted by the pandemic and to fund the 2022 festival.

T

The 2013 Fringe was held across five festival villages in New town, Leichhardt, Marrickville, Surry Hills, and Glebe/Chippen dale, utilising venues and featuring local talent in each. The out door courtyard in front of the Seymour Centre was transformed into a drop-in, late night festival hub called the Emerald City. It offered a bar, food, and live performances and became a proto type for similar hubs going forward.

And here we are.

HISTORY 04

2019, the Fringe had totally claimed the full month of September. Some highlights that year included: a touring hub sponsored by Innocent Bystander, the Archie Rose Cabaret Club, an immersive horror theatre show, long-table dinners, a flash mob, and a Babylonian-inspired feast in Chippendale’s Kensington St. Its program orbit encom passed The Rocks, Paddington, Newtown, Lilyfield, the CBD, Chippendale and extended south to Hurstville, which hosted its own three day mini-festival, Fringeville.

The Sydney Fringe Festival as we now know it began in 2010, however, there had been a previous version. From 1994 to 2002, a fringe festival headquartered in Bondi ran as a shadow event to the Sydney Festival. It was shelved due to lack of funding and it took eight years before the void was filled by a newly minted Sydney Fringe Festival in 2010. The new festival was created by the Newtown Entertainment Precinct Association (NEPA), a collective of Inner West theatre companies which included The Edge, the Enmore Theatre, New Theatre, Newtown Theatre, Pact Youth Theatre, Seymour Theatre Centre, Sidetrack Performance Group, and Carriageworks.

In 2014, the Fringe teamed up with the National Live Music Office and APRA AMCOS to present a new launch event for the

The reborn Sydney Fringe Festival opened on September 10, 2010 with a 17 day schedule featuring 280 events and over 3000 artists. The program included 76 theatre shows, 59 music acts, 30 musicals, 25 visual arts exhibitions, 11 burlesque or circus acts, eight dance pro ductions and two film festivals. Performanc es took place in pubs, theatres, open air sites, community spaces and other venues.

In 2016, it was Darlinghurst’s turn. Fringe Ignite was held in Stanley Street with sur rounding bars, eateries and shop fronts join ingByin.

The following year saw another switch in leadership, but this one stuck: Kerri Glass cock. With a career in film, television and theatre dating from 1997, as well as a proven record managing music and arts fes tivals and establishing the iconic jazz club, Venue 505 and its sister, Old 505 Theatre, Glasscock was and remains the pilot light for the Sydney Fringe.

Glasscock has been at the helm of the festival since 2013 and has seen both the program and the geographic footprint grow each year. Before COVID-19 hit, the festival was in venues across 29 postcodes around Sydney. The coverage has decreased this year, but Glasscock envisions the festival making back ground and expanding further beyond Greater Sydney very quickly.

“The great thing about Fringe is that you’ll either see the best thing you’ve ever seen in your life or you’ll see the worst thing you’ve ever seen in your life. Either way you’ll talk about it for ever,” says Festival Director and CEO, Kerri Glasscock.

Carroll is currently being mentored by esteemed composer, cabaret artist, theatre maker, and multi-instrumentalist, Victoria Falconer who is also one of the festival ambassadors this year.

Returning for its 15th anniversary performance is Six Women Standing in Front of a White Wall created by Can berra company, Little Dove Art Theatre. The work has trav elled around the world and been performed by 30 different women. This performance features five women from differ entTakingcountries.itscues from Japanese Butoh, the work comprises six women standing in a row, simply dressed, moving re sponsively to stimuli including input from observers.

FOR a dozen years now, Sydney Fringe has been bringing to gether established and emerging artists representing the full genre spectrum: comedy, dance, theatre, visual arts, music, per formance, experimental, undefinable.

“It’s about the experience — so for us it’s all about unused and under-utilised space,” explains Glasscock. “We love to take over unusual space in the city that people don’t normally get to go to or that you don’t normally see art in; creating new experiences, shaping the city in ways that, you know, you can’t have at other times of the year. That’s really what drives us.”

This year’s program includes a fascinating collection of offerings.

They are also very focused on ensuring that lesser-heard voic es get a platform. Many artists, especially those whose work is not mainstream, savour the opportunities afforded by the Fringe which has a lot of elasticity for risk-taking.

“It’s a little bit of comedy, a little bit of cabaret, and a whole lot of Katy Perry. It’s essentially a work around how hearing “I kissed a girl” when she was 13 totally transformed her life,” explains Glasscock.

Cherry is playing at the Emerging Artist Sharehouse, a festival hub for new and emerging artists situated within the Erskineville Town

“We’re wanting to ensure that Sydney audiences have new, fantastic experiences. About 80% of the work that takes place at Sydney Fringe are brand new world premieres.”

The Fringe is an open-access festival and does not curate events as such; what it does is try to present those events in unique ways that add value for an audience. Shows may take place in large and small venues, outdoor locations, disused sites, precincts or in one of the various festival hubs.

“They’ve built the whole front of the ship and it’s going to be at the Maritime Museum. And so, you sit around the ship and there’s actors playing all the characters and then they pull people out of the audience to play, you know, Rose or what ever,” laughs Glasscock.

FEATURE

OneHall.of the truly innovative shows being in the program this year is Titanic: The Movie, The Play (not to be mistaken for the musical or for any other work of seriousness). Brisbane company, Act React is a comedic troupe that produces location-based, in teractive, pop culture-inspired performances. In 2019 they cre ated Speed: The Movie, The Play which was set on a real bus parked in The Rocks.

Titanic will be equally meta and hilarious in its presentation.

After two years we’d rather all forget, Sydney’s artists and performers can finally come out of retreat and start doing what they do best — shaking their arts! There is no better showcase for the myriad talent we have in this city than the Sydney Fringe Festival and the 2022 program is bigger, broader, and ballsier than ever.

Cherry is a quirky, coming-of-age, coming-out, fan girl dedica tion to pop idol Katy Perry by Pacifika artist, Sarah Carroll.

“It’s this incredible observation of the objectification of wom en’s bodies… you walk into a room that’s set like a gallery and the women are standing on plinths and they perform, but at some point you can interact with them and their bodies. It’s just… it’s amazing! You have to see it,” says Glasscock.

Each year, the Fringe furthers its agenda to become more in clusive. The 2022 festival is committed to holding space for First Nations voices in the arts, presenting Indie Yarns, a First Nations Q&A with members of The Sydney Fringe First Nations Advisory Panel (Redfern Community Centre - 3 Sept),an evening with cel ebrated Central Australian singer-songwriter Paul Ah Chee; and Dane Simpson’s award-winning stand-up comedy show Didgeri doozy, full of funny stories and big laughs.

As ever, the Sydney Fringe program is huge and might seem a little daunting. Glasscock’s suggestion, if you don’t know where to start, is to choose a hub. The hubs are multi-venue spaces designed around a theme or genre, e.g. cabaret, queer, emerging etc. Many include a bar and chillout area.

I thought my audience and viewers could possibly connect with this as it’s on the street. I was viewed by passers-by and members of the pub lic — people with ordinary jobs and lives, working hard to continue living essentially.

This is not the first time that Sale has painted murals of passed public figures. Earlier this year, he painted a portrait of Shane Warne following the cricketer’s death, which can be seen in Marrickville’s Faversham Lane. His work has become

“Reception has been, in the main part, positive. When painting the piece, passers-by were very happy, taking photos and commenting. Since it has been on display, there has been a lot of love. And a bit of hate, of course. I’ve stopped looking at the comments now it’s everywhere.

The portrait, which took Sale two-and-a-half hours to paint on the evening of Friday 9 September, consists of seven layers of paint.

“My process consists of choosing my image, breaking it down on my iPad into a range of tonal layers going from dark to light. This process takes about an hour, depending on how many layers I’m using — more layers, more detail. I then project the layers onto the wall and paint each layer in its tonal value or colour.

By 1882, plans had been submitted to add a second storey, with the hall proving too small after just a few years of use. The extended design is attributed to architect Cyril Blacket, of Blacket & Son. Peter Hill was noted as the contractor for the works, which were completed in 1883.

THE original Marrickville Town Hall, on Illawarra Road, was built in 1879. Records indicate it was built as a single-storey hall, possibly designed by Despointes Bros architects, based on a commission payment made in June 1879.

By 1911, plans were underway for a new town hall with council stating the current hall was “altogether inadequate” for the purposes of the day. Council purchased a site on Marrickville Road, which had been owned by Joseph Graham and used as a market garden. Mr Graham was well known to council, having been elected Mayor of Marrickville eight times between 1870 and 1891.

Marrickville Town Hall on Illawarra Road is currently occupied by the Greek Atlas Cultural & Community Centre. The second Town Hall on Marrickville Road remains under the ownership of Inner West Council and is available as a venue for hire.

T

Use of the new town hall by council was relatively shortlived with administration moved to Petersham in 1948 when the two councils merged. The building continued to serve the residents of Marrickville as a venue for meetings, dances and other events. The basement of the building was used as Marrickville Library until 2019 when it moved into new premises.Theoriginal

But it wasn’t until 1921, following World War I and the 1919 influenza pandemic, that the foundation stone for the new town hall was laid. A public competition had been held for the design of the building. Architect Lindsay Thompson was the winner but is jointly credited with Mansfield and Son Architects on heritage documents. Thompson left the project following the passage of time and many disputes with the council. Local builder Douglas Stuart was in charge of construction.

1922, and Mayor Henry Morton opened the new town hall on 11 February 1922. An estimated 20,000 people attended the opening.Thenew town hall was built from brick and sandstone from the nearby Undercliffe quarry. Inside, the walls are wainscoted in French polished Queensland maple, while the stairs are made from Terrazzo marble with wrought iron balustrades.

A statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, was erected at the front of the building as a memorial to the 450 Marrickville residents who lost their lives during World War I. The original statue was removed in 2009 after years of deterioration. It was absent for several years before the new statue was unveiled in 2015.

The last meeting at the old town hall was held on 30 January

the memory is shared with a friend or acquaintance, typically starting with “I can remember when…”

TWO cars rolled down Marrickville Road, their loud exhaust pipes gurgling and popping as they came to a complete stop near the intersection of Illawarra Road. Angelo and his mates noticed them; they had just finished school for the day, it was the 1980s, and these were typical cars in which most young guys liked to hoon around. Loud and in your face. The vehicles were parked on either side of the road; one was full of slick haircuts and the other with shaved heads. With little warning, the doors of each car swung open, releasing half-adozen charged-up tough guys and, without a word spoken, the two mobs charged towards each other.

were not captured in the newspapers, the nightly news or the library archives. They are simply a person’s experience that becomes a memory. Occasionally

Theatre maker and creative producer Claudia Chidiac is someone who loves stories and takes great pleasure in creating intimate and visceral experiences between storytellers and their audience. She also has a wide-eyed fascination for Marrickville and particularly Illawarra Road, its history and the stories its communities harbour. This is why she and her creative partner, Nick Wishart, are leading a campaign to record the stories and memories so they may be digitised and shared with future generations. Angelo’s and Brian’s stories are just two of the many they have already compiled. What is even cooler is they will knit these stories into an audio-guided walking tour of the neighbourhood. Claudia explained:

COMMUNITY 14

Recently, I have started producing audio walks made for children across Sydney. I find this medium to be an exciting way to tell local stories whilst also incorporating the art of walking (yes, walking is now an art form!) in suburbs. Often, there are physical parts of a suburb that locals have no idea about, and more times than not, there are locals with extraordinary stories that no one has heard. So, this brings the two together beautifully.

COLLECTING MEMORIES

A COMMUNITY HAS MANY STORIES

Neighbourhoods and communities are full of stories like this. Stories from the good old days, the tough times, the times that felt they could last forever. They aren’t all like Angelo’s, though. Some are like Brian’s, a local man in his seventies who can still remember the horses he once rode in a paddock behind his childhood home on Illawarra Road. Others remember catching the old trams up Illawarra to Addison Road, buying lunch at Moore’s Milk Bar, or migrating to Australia and taking their kids to their first day at Marrickville Public

“This work is a love dedication to Marrickville!”

Angelo and his mates stood and watched in amazement as they brawled, kicked, punched and wrestled in a testosterone-fuelled frenzy. Then, just like that, they stopped, gathered back to their respective cars and drove away as though nothing had happened. Angelo had witnessed one of the many battles between the groups he knew as ‘the wogs’ and ‘the skinheads’.

But, like all things, with time, these memories fade away.

Claudia has put out a call to the Marrickville community for people with stories to come forward and be interviewed. She and Nick are looking for stories from those who live and have lived in Marrickville, have owned a business or currently own a business, and have special memories they would like to share.

When asked what makes Illawarra Road so unique to her, Claudia“Marrickvillereplied:has to be one of the most culturally diverse places in Australia. Illawarra Road reflects Australia’s colonial and migration history, you see this with businesses that have been there for 50-plus years that are neighbouring newer businesses. So far, she and Nick have walked up and down Illawarra Road interviewing dozens of residents and business owners. People who have lived their whole lives in the neighbourhood.Thecommunity in Marrickville is so lovely. I haven’t met anyone who isn’t willing to share a story yet. There is a real sense of love and pride for their suburb.

Considering the glowing review of her performance in the January 1999 issue of Realtime Magazine, we certainly hope Claudia tells this story as part of Marrickville’s popular bohemian side. have would phone time to meet with Claudia and Nick for recording session.

Claudia acknowledges that Marrickville and Illawarra Road sit on the traditional lands of the Gadigal People, who still have a strong connection with the Cooks River and its surrounds. She wants the project to include stories from all walks of life. This ethos is further enforced by her appreciation of her family’s story, having parents and grandparents who migrated from Lebanon.

But, how about Claudia? What story is she going to share?

ABOUT MAGGIE’S RESCUE

She was so ill, it was felt she couldn’t be treated and the devastating decision had to be made to euthanize her. In the conversations that followed, it was decided that while the world might forget about the ‘Maggies’ who remain locked up, ill-treated, and overlooked, they simply couldn’t forget. Maggie’s story was the catalyst, spurring them to create something bigger than a rescue group - a cooperative, which would provide a safe haven for animals in need of compassionate rehoming. This is her legacy, and today the work of Maggie’s Rescue continues, honouring her memory.

In 2011, an independent dog carer received an urgent call regarding a dog found abandoned at a property. Maggie, a nine-year-old Border Collie, was brought to us so that we could work out the best care plan for her. On arrival, evidence of her long-term neglect was immediately obvious. A vet confirmed Maggie was suffering from cancer and chronic arthritis.

All the pets on the next page are available for foster and adoption.

Our Building Better Behaviour program is aimed specifically at dogs and provides a vital educational resource in our community. It enables us to work closely with highly regarded vet behaviourists to provide training for our volunteer coordinators and foster carers. In doing so, we’re able to also accept dogs displaying certain behavioural issues we hadn’t previously been able to cater

MAGGIE’S RESCUE exists to create a world where no animal is in need of rescue. Operating since 2011, we are a co-operative of volunteer foster carers and passionate animal advocates, working together to achieve our shared vision.

We have a no-kill philosophy, with a focus on finding animals their forever homes through our Foster-to-Adopt approach. This ethos is key to our organisation’s success, as it rehabilitates our animals in preparation for their new life. We focus on reducing the number of unwanted and abandoned animals through rehoming, community education, desexing initiatives and liaising with other welfare organisations.

to, and give them the support and growth needed to find their forever homes.

LIAM AND MAYA: Double the love in your life with double to dog, Liam and Maya are super chill giants who have been in foster care for a whole year! These brother, sister duo are a true delight, all they need is a short daily stroll, a few snacks and a good place to nap and these two will be happy as Larry and you will two knowing you get to share your life with some true legends. Liam and Maya are 8 years old, mix breeds, they are sweet as pie and very ready to land themselves a forever family.

LIAM AND MAYA

RIN: She’s a little shy but oh so sweet, Rin has come a long way whilst in foster care and is now ready to graduate to a forever home where she will be loved, adored and treated like the living angel that she is. Rin is 4 years old and if her bright green eyes haven’t hypnotised you into sending off an adoption application, her unassuming, gentle demeanor might just convince you. Rin is looking for a quiet home where she can live a chill existence, getting a cuddle on the couch or sunbaking by the window.

USZKAMILO

BEAU

At 8 years young, Beau the Mastiff wins the hearts of everyone he meets. His big cheesy grin and full body wags can only be outshined by his sweet demeanor and if you’re looking for a dog who you can wrap your arm around as you sit of the couch after a long day’s work, Beau’s your man. Having been in care for 7 months, Beau is long overdue for his happily ever after. He needs to be the only dog in the home but could easily fit into life either in a house or an apartment.

MILO: He’s tiny but mighty, Milo is a perfectly compact boy with a personality bigger than Ben Hur. Milo loves setting out and about, playing with his toys and if you pass the vibe check, a good cuddle. He hasn’t had an easy life and as a result has some less than desirable behaviours that need a dedicated someone to continue to manage. He is more than a lap dog, Milo is a lifestyle but for those who don’t mind a bit of a challenge, this 4 year old fuzz might just be your perfect match.

If you are interested in adopting any of these amazing creatures you can visit our website for more maggiesrescue.org/adoptinfo:

USZKA: Uszka loves nothing more than the pleasure of your company! This darling lady will often seek you out to say hello and spends most of her day by your side, whether that’s settling down for a snooze on your desk whilst you work, or cuddling up beside you on the sofa while you watch TV. She’s only 3 years old and is a great mix of playful and chill, single and ready to mingle.

That was four years ago. Today, The Hop + Grain Brew Store has two sites — Marrickville and Moorebank — where home brewers can kit up with ingredients, equipment and advice or take a workshop to hone their craft. For while The Hop + Grain was forged in Marrickville, the microbrewery capital of Sydney, it is not a beer producer itself but part of the origin story for many individual beer producers.

Home brewing is still recovering its reputation from the days when dad or grandpa would produce something almost undrinkable. The likely reason? They didn’t do the fermentation properly.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO START YOUR HOME BREWING JOURNEY.

If you’re starting out, Montefiore will always ask how much time and space you have for this hobby and then recommend a method and equipment to suit. Starter kits are extremely accessible. For less than $100, extract brewing takes a few hours and has an ‘apartment-friendly’ footprint, while the all-grain brewing method requires more time, space, and equipment to produce more complex results.

Montefiore can attest to the addictive nature of the craft. Not the beverage, but the process. “A lot of people go into it for the result, to save money: you can make two cases of craft beer for 25 bucks, which is $75 a case in the shop from a brewery. But, once they get into it, they go, ‘Oh, the hobby’s fantastic’ and that becomes the more addictive thing.”

2. PERFECT YOUR FERMENTATION

One man’s journey from beer hobbyist to hop specialist, with tips for the homeBybrewer.AdelineTeoh

20

Another drawcard is the freshness of the beer, which people don’t realise affects the taste until they try their own. “Beer is like food, it can spoil. Home brew means it’s going from the shed to your fridge. It’s the freshest it is ever going to be,” he says.

W

WHEN home brewer David Montefiore jokingly asked his friend Nicky Stephens to find a business to buy, little did he realise the perfect one was just around the corner. “I’d say to her, ‘Nicky, find a business we can go into together.’ She saw [The Hop + Grain] for sale and within three-and-a-half weeks we’d signed, quit our jobs and went into home brewing,” he says of the fortuitous timing.

1. TIME, SPACE AND EQUIPMENT

“I used to work in the golf industry and it was a struggle for people to justify six hours away from their family on a weekend to play golf. With this hobby you’re at home and you can get great results in a few hours,” he says.

FOOD

It’s an activity that suits different kinds of people, he notes. “There’s the artistic person who thinks a little more outside the square, and then you’ve got the scientists who put the lab coat on and stick to all their numbers. Home brewing suits both those people at the opposite ends of the spectrum.”

“I drank VB for 26-and-a-half years, and I just love that I’ve discovered tastes and hops,” says Montefiore. “My palate has changed unbelievably quickly. I speak to many of our customers and they say, ‘I can’t go back to what I drank’.”

3. DRINK OTHER BEERS

Interestingly enough, ‘homework’ for home brewing actually takes place outside the home. Montefiore says if you really want to hone your craft, take note of what other brewers are doing and ask questions. “When you go out, especially to the microbreweries, try different beers. Ask the bar staff what’s in the beers. They’re always happy to share. If you like it, great, you can use it for your own. If you don’t like it, you’ll know what not to put in your own beers.”

“I reckon 95% of buggered up beer is due to bad fermentation,” says Montefiore. “The two most important things are sanitisation and the right temperature. Yeast is a living thing, it needs to be comfortable, it’s very sensitive. As long as you’ve got those two things right you’ll get something to drink.”

If you’re interested in learning more, The Hop + Grain has a range of classes to suit different levels, from absolute beginners to all-grain brewing. But be warned: once you craft your own you may never be able to drink a standard pub schooner again.

Renée Russo, who co-owns the business with her husband Jake Russo, says the premise of Hypmotive was pretty simple: to give artists a retail space to share their work. “Australia is filled with talented artists, designers and makers and we noticed that there weren’t many retailers providing retail space for the small business owners and sole traders working within the creative industries,” she explains. “We saw an opportunity to bridge that gap and to bring more heart, soul and connection into the retail experience for customers and the local community.”

repercussions,” mentions Renée) it hasn’t all been dark days.

In the shop you’ll find everything from wheel thrown ceramics, original artworks and handcrafted jewellery to hand-poured scented candles, art prints and even a selection of curated vintage clothing. “By shopping with us, you are supporting local independent artists, designers, makers and small business, helping to fuel Australia’s creativity,” says Renée of their mission.

22

“We are now curating the Metro Markets, alongside Panetta Mercato, every month at Marrickville Metro which is definitely worth attending. There aren’t many local markets that are indoors in Marrickville,” she notes. “Nothing compares to the unique and cool atmosphere of this space, alongside visiting the carefully curated mix of local makers, our Hypmotive store and dining at the many delicious restaurants. It’s well worth a visit.”Asfor her favourite venue, she can’t recommend just one. “Take your pick of any of the new restaurants at Smidmore Street, they are all amazing. We love a beer at Hawke’s Brewery and Marrickville Hotel is always a good spot to catch up with mates.”

While the advent of COVID-19 and associated lockdowns hit small business hard (“sadly we are still dealing with the

If you want to get involved in the Marrickville arts community, you don’t need to go far. “There are loads of artist-run spaces and initiatives in Marrickville, like Monster Mouse Studios and Scratch Art Space. It always good to check out what exhibitions or workshops they are hosting to get more involved in the arts community.”

To call Hypmotive a gift shop would be underselling its value to the neighbourhood as a platform for local artisans and unique Australian brands. It is foremost a platform to fuel creativity, says Renée. “We established ourselves on Marrickville Road and, with the support from our customers and the local community, we grew over the years, which was amazing, and created a very special and unique community.”
