We look back on 140 years of the Balmain Hospital - a story of innovation and working class resolve.

BALMAIN Hospital’s golden sandstone walls overlook Sydney Harbour in quiet contrast to the noise and danger that once defined the peninsula below. For more than 140 years, the hospital has been a community symbol for innovation in industry, medicine and public will.

If these walls could talk, they would recount stories of injured dockworkers carried in from the waterfront, nurses trained under gaslight, babies born during post-war optimism, and a community that repeatedly advocated for its hospital and refused to let it disappear.

A Hospital Born of Industrial Necessity In the late nineteenth century, Balmain was one of the most heavily industrialised areas in New South Wales.

Engineering workshops, chemical plants, glassworks, soap and canning factories lined the foreshores, while shipbuilding and coal handling dominated employment.

Industrial growth brought increased risk. Workplace accidents were frequent, illnesses common, and medical care difficult to access.

City hospitals were distant, and transport by ferry or poorly formed roads was slow and hazardous. Public concern turned into organised action at a Balmain public meeting in 1884, where residents called for a local cottage hospital to treat accidents and illness close to home.

A cottage on Darling Street was secured rent-free, and on 26 June 1885 the Balmain Cottage Hospital opened. It comprised four rooms and four beds and treated 39 patients in its first year, becoming the first metropolitan suburban hospital in New South Wales.

The Community Needed Expansion and Professional Care The demand for services quickly exceeded capacity. Within a year, plans for expansion were underway. Balmain Cottage Hospital was evolving into a more sophisticated institution.

A new operating room opened in 1891, a telephone was installed the following year. Balmain hospital is proudly one of the first hospitals to commence formal nurse training; an innovator of discipline in early nursing education and the quiet authority of women who formed the backbone of hospital care across the country.

Becoming a District Hospital and Wartime Resilience The early twentieth century marked a pivotal period for Balmain Hospital. In 1901, the Victoria Ward introduced dedicated women’s and children’s wards along with outpatient services, reflecting the hospital’s growing role in the community.

By 1907 the hospital was renamed Balmain and District Hospital, signalling its expanding reach beyond the peninsula. Modern technology followed swiftly: the hospital was electrified in 1912, and an X-ray plant was installed.

The onset of the Second World War presented new challenges, reshaping hospital operations across Australia.

Even amid wartime uncertainty, the hospital continued to grow. This period demonstrated not only the hospital’s adaptability but also the enduring commitment of the community that relied on it, a sturdy institution both literally and figuratively, ready to meet the challenges of a changing Sydney and world.

Post-War Change and New Standards In 1946, the hospital board approved the training of male nurses, a progressive decision during a time of post-war conservatism. Balmain Hospital’s first male nurse graduated in 1952, reflecting a broader shift in professional and social expectations.

In 1951, Balmain Hospital opened its first maternity unit in the John Beasley Ward.

Over the next 29 years, 16,781 babies were born at Balmain. The service expanded in 1960 with the opening of the Harold Simpson Wing and reached its peak in 1979–80 with 750 births in a single year.

The maternity unit transformed the building from a place of crisis and recovery into one of beginnings, underscoring a truth that runs through its history: a hospital is made of far more than beds and statistics. Its value lies in the trust it earns, the continuity it provides, and the generations who carry its presence with them long after they leave its wards.

Redefinition and Community Resistance By the late twentieth century, healthcare delivery models were changing. In 1993, following its integration into the Central Sydney Area Health Service, Balmain Hospital

Community opposition proved decisive. Residents, staff and former patients mobilised to prevent its closure.

Instead, the hospital was redefined. More than $1 million in refurbishments transformed Balmain Hospital into a specialised centre for geriatric care and rehabilitation, including new physiotherapy facilities and an innovative GP casualty unit.

In an era when many local hospitals have disappeared, Balmain stands as evidence that sustained advocacy can shape outcomes.

The building that overlooks the harbour today is the result of more than bricks and mortar. It is the cumulative result of 140 years of insistence - by workers, families, clinicians and residents - that healthcare belongs close to home.

Balmain District Hospital Now Today, Balmain Hospital has evolved from a four-bed cottage to a specialist centre for rehabilitation. The hospital’s physical expansion tells only part of the story; its greater legacy lies in the people who repeatedly insisted it remain.

Across 140 years, Balmain’s communities have medically advocated, firstly, to secure a local hospital in the face of industrial danger, then, to expand and modernise it, and later to defend it from closure.

Each generation has pushed this small but resilient institution to adapt, rebuild and redefine its purpose, ensuring it remains relevant to local needs.

Balmain Hospital is therefore more than a healthcare facility.

It is a record of collective action, built by the surrounding community. Its endurance reflects a community that understood early the value of accessible care and refused to relinquish it.

Opting for income security, Michelle studied to be an art teacher at City Art Institute (now UNSW College of Fine Art). Her painting lecturer was a prominent abstract artist.

“Being a realist painter, my painting style and that of my lecturer didn’t gel and I lost my confidence as a painter to some extent. I ended up doing ceramics as my studio major with studio minors in printmaking and photography,” says Michelle.

Those multiple disciplines came in handy as a teacher, but Michelle yearned to develop her own art practice, which was becoming more difficult with time and space constraints.

When her son started school, Michelle finally managed to cut back teaching hours and create a rudimentary studio (a garden shed she shared with spiders and cockroaches and rain).

She began painting in oils, winning a Highly Commended award in the Liverpool City Arts festival at Casula Powerhouse in 2001 for her first still life. Then came the illfated move to Brisbane which put her art practice completely on pause. A new home and return to art teaching put her back on track.

Michelle describes herself, artistically, as a realist, inspired by artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods,

Caravaggio, the Dutch Masters and exponents of realism, though she loves all styles of art.

“For many years I painted flowers almost exclusively, looking for the symbolism of the flower but also focusing on the sensuality of the forms and how individual flowers can seem to take on a personality of sorts,” she explains.

“In the past couple of years, I have gravitated more to landscapes and most recently I’ve been enjoying making detailed charcoal drawings that focus on dramatic, everchanging skies and seas.”

One of Michelle’s most memorable experiences was a four-week residency at Chateau d’Orquevaux, in the Champagne district in France, in 2017, where she was worked on paintings for her first exhibition at Art Gallery on Darling.

“I was part of the first group of artists to complete a residency in the chateau that has since been named in the top 10 international artist residencies.”

Michelle plans to retire from teaching next year to focus more on her art making. The calendar is already being filled with residencies, workshops, and exhibitions, including one to be held at AGOD involving her mother and siblings in a poignant family tribute.

The crew is also fundraising for Laureus Sport For Good, a global organisation that runs sports programs to transform the lives of children and young people.

“Each of the four of us has a story of how sport had a majorly positive impact on our life,” Rough explains. “I was at university in a bit of a tough mental space, and the rowing is what got me through that. Matt and Ana both have similar stories, and Cal had that with running, but there are so many children around the world that don’t have the opportunity to be involved in sport.”

As for what they want to achieve by doing the row, Mayhook says it’s simply doing it. “If we can inspire other people to just get out there and have a go, either through seeing us do the row, or directly through Laureus Sport For Good fundraising, that would be so amazing.”

Rough already has a speaking tour lined up with her alma mater in Singapore, which gave her an alumni grant to compete. “I am doing a few sessions with the Outdoor Society at that school talking to a group of students about to do their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. And then after the row I’ll go visit them in Singapore and do some talks in person.

We catch up with long suffering Wests Tigers’ fan, Blake Robinson, to talk about a season of change and challenges.

THE Wests Tigers entered 2025 with everything on the line.

Marking 20 years since their fairytale 2005 premiership, the goal wasn’t to chase past glory but to dodge a fourth straight wooden spoon and maybe - just maybe - finish somewhere north of last. Finals footy? A few brave souls even whispered, “Hey, why not?”

For fans, this year just felt different. Coach Benji Marshall had more involvement in recruitment and development, some dead weight from previous administrations had finally fizzled out and a soirée of big names had been called in to steady the ship.

Jarome Luai, coming to the club hot off a Penrith Panthers four-peat, was potentially the biggest, most promising signing of the joint venture’s short history, with hope his winning culture and attitude will rub off on the young, inexperienced Tigers group.

Some more firepower was added to the wing with Luai’s Penrith premiership teammate Sunia Turuva. Turuva wasted no time making his mark, finishing his debut season as the club’s leading try-scorer with 11 - edging out fellow new recruit Jeral Skelton from Canterbury, who wasn’t far behind on 10.

The forward pack also received a boost with the signing of prop Terrell May from the Roosters. Playing all 24 games, his string of 80 minute efforts on both sides of the ball were a deciding factor in each of the Tiger’s nine winning games.

Another major contributor to the club’s run of late season form was the injection of Terrell’s brother Taylan. Joining on a train and trial deal, he quickly made an impact scoring on

10

debut at Leichhardt Oval in the team’s one point victory over the Titans in Round 20. Finishing the year with four tries, his impact out wide will be a crucial part of success in 2026 and a key player to watch out for, going forward.

It was a fairytale return from a third ACL injury for beloved Balmain junior Adam Doueihi. The utility was another key part of the Tigers’ late season charge, inspiring the boys to a few close victories, with his goalkicking ability proving to be a valuable asset.

Sharing the load with Adam in the halves to fill the void of a mid season Lachlan Galvin departure was Latu Fainu.

The youngest of three Fainu brothers calling Wests Tigers home, his line attacking style of playmaking complimented Jarome Luai well and the presence of the Fainu brothers is certainly something all Tigers faithful can look forward to in the coming years.

A few highlights of season 2025 for me personally would have to be our shock victory over the Roosters at ‘Twallianz’ in Round 18, leading that clash 20-0 at one stage in the first half, holding off a late surge by the Roosters to secure a 30-28 win.

Round 22 saw the first edition of ‘The Lachlan Galvin Cup’ against a top-of-the-table Bulldogs side. A rainy afternoon at Commbank Stadium saw the Tigers come out of the sheds playing with a point to prove, leading 20-4 at halftime and holding on in the wet to walk away with a win to the tune of 28-14. Two very famous club victories that cannot go without mention.

MP TANYA PLIBERSEK

IT’S fair to assume Tanya Plibersek loves what she does, having done it for 27 years and counting. The popular politician is as much a Sydney icon as the Bridge or Opera House; testament to that is this year’s election result in which she achieved the highest primary Labor vote in the country.

Tanya’s legacy, however, will go beyond high polling scores. As a conscientious, empathetic MP, Tanya proudly notes among her achievements the introduction of Kids’ Dental; the building of 80 new homelessness services; and the addition of 100 million hectares to land and ocean conserved in Australia.

Motivated to make a difference, Tanya aims for significant systemic changes, yet she also feels great satisfaction in being able to help individual constituents, especially when she’s their last resort.

With cost of living and housing affordability being pressing issues in her constituency, Tanya knows there is still a lot of work for her to do.

Thankfully, she also knows where to re-fuel and find inspiration!

SYDNEY BREWERY, founded 2005 in Surry Hills, have recently opened their brand new venue near the historic White Bay Power Station, close to Sydney Harbour in Rozelle.

Announcing the purchase of the former White Bay Brewery in Rozelle in September 2025, which is located within a 150-year-old former steel mill on south-western tip of the bay, Sydney Brewery were quick to revitalise the site, which has been open since early December.

Neighbourhood Media caught up with Richard Feyn, Marketing Manager at Sydney Brewery, for an update on the exciting new acquisition and their future plans.

How is the Rozelle brewery transformation progressing?

It’s going great! We officially launched on Dec 1, with Mayor Darcy Byrne helping our owner, Jerry, cut the ribbon! Tricia and the A-Team from Alexandria have been awesome in getting things running smoothly, as have the great White Bay Brewery team who’ve come across.

It’s a great location, what can you reveal about the history of the site?

The history of a site and suburb are always of interest, in particular we delved into the history of Rozelle to discover the Rosella bird had migrated from Rosehill (being the Rosehill Parrot), so this has inspired the top half of our logo character. The bottom of half of course being the Tiger, which speaks for itself. We hope it does anyway!

Sydney Brewery is the recipient of many awards. Do you have a Head Brewer who fine-tunes the winning flavours, or is it more of a team effort?

We have head brewers in each brewery, with Nathan Holgersson coming across from White Bay Brewery to be our Rozelle Head Brewer and oversee brewing operations across the group. Ultimately though, it’s a collaborative effort, the brewers all work together.

Any other awards in recent history we should mention?

Awards). Other than that, a few Golds including AIBA for our new Lemon Twist Cider and our South East Ale. And Sydney Royal Gold for our Pilsner, Lumberjack Rye IPA and Speak Easy Black IPA. What inspired the logos and the company slogan, “All kinds of different?”

The characters are essentially inspired by the suburbs the beers were previously named after - Surry Hills Pils (now Pilsner) showing a combination of the head of Kate Leigh, wings for the Birdman of Surry Hills and shears representing the rag trade that is centred in Surry Hills.

Paddo Pale (now Pale Ale), showing the gentrified male smoking a pipe with flower protruding. All a bit eccentric and eclectic, like the rich tapestry of characters that make up Sydney. To this end, like our own staff across four breweries and our diverse range of products, they are All Kinds of Different.

Considering other breweries often choose bizarre titles for their companies – named after their children, or ex-politicians, or obscure historical references how did you come to choose the sensible ‘Sydney Brewery’ as the brand name?

Actually, I developed the brand Sydney Cider many years ago, and the original Schwartz Brewery morphed into Sydney Brewery on the back of that. Of course, all the touch points of Sydney Cider as a brand apply to Sydney Brewery; aspirational, harbour and beaches lifestyle, great dining and sporting options - it has something for everyone.

Anything you’d like to add?

We are thrilled to be part of Tiger Town and the diverse village that Balmain and Rozelle represent. The locals have been very welcoming, and it already feels like home.

IT would be disingenuous to call Max Chen a mere purveyor of tea. The founder of Cha is Tea (cha being the Chinese word for ‘tea’) is more like an ambassador than a businessman.

The long-time tea lover was a salesman in his native China before he moved his family to Australia to give his daughter a better education. But even in his previous life he realised he loved tea more than his occupation, so when he arrived in Sydney he decided to make tea his calling.

“It’s a kind of dream life for me,” he says of the change.

“You can make a different friend at the tea table, listening to their story.”

While Australia has a long history of British-style tea culture, Chen still sees a big gap in the market for Chinese-style tea in Australia, especially those who don’t have Asian heritage.

British-style tea is either a teabag in a cup or loose-leaf tea in a big teapot, whereas the Chinese-style tea culture comprises a lot of tea leaves in a small teapot or gaiwan (lidded cup) that brews many infusions.

“When you’re drinking tea, you’re not only drinking tea – the whole process is very relaxed and very good for mental health,” says Chen.

The Balmain tearoom shares its address with the Chinese Herbal Centre, which is owned by Chen’s friend. He says it’s ideal in many ways: not too far from the city but in a terrace house that’s “quiet and very comfortable for people to come here and relax.”

HOW TO MAKE TEA

You don’t need fancy gear, just bear these principles in mind.

1. Tea to water ratio: This determines the strength of the tea – a higher amount of tea compared to water will make a stronger brew.

2. Water temperature: Different tea types have ideal temperatures to extract certain flavour notes. Green tea, for example, often enjoys a lower water temperature (around 80-85ºC) to avoid bitter notes.

3. Time: The length of your brew time also determines the flavours that emerge; too short and you get colour with little flavour, but too long and you’ll get astringency on the palate.

Intimate yet spectacular, brimming with talent and charisma

The La Ronde performers have enough personality to fill the spacious theatre tenfold. Expertise, sexiness, humour, and charm are paramount and present in spades.

The mood is set with red-hued lighting and a giant mirror ball on stage. Then the spotlight hits powerhouse singer, Geniris (Dominican Republic) who enters like royalty, with a majestic voice to match.

PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL

PRETTY Woman, the movie, hit big screens 35 years ago and immediately garnered a loving fan base. The film was a box office number one for many weeks and then went on to be one of the most successful films of all time.

It’s still popular today.

In 2018, Pretty Woman: The Musical made its Broadway debut. It’s taken seven years for it to make its way Down Under but it finally premiered at Sydney’s Theatre Royal on November 4.

All the magical elements that have made Pretty Woman, the movie, into an enduring classic are, alas, missing from this lack-lustre musical. Because the film is so iconic, it’s impossible not to draw comparisons and therein lies one of the major pitfalls of the adaptation — it tries too hard to bring the film to the stage, rather than being its own entity.

Garry Marshall, the film’s director, and J.F. Lawton, the original screenwriter, collaborated on the book for the musical adaptation. They’ve done their best to preserve the story and much of the film script, failing to recognise that film and stage are two distinct mediums. The result is a narrative that feels clunky and forced.

The blockbuster 1990 rom-com with lots of charm and bags full of iconic quotes has been adapted into a stage musical…but is it a big mistake?

Tim Omaji has lots of spunk and energy, playing several characters including Mr Thompson, the hotel manager, and Happy Man, the spruiker on the Boulevard.

Douglas Hansell is not as slimy a Stuckey as Jason Alexander was in the film, playing more for comedy. Michelle Brasier as Vivian’s bestie, Kit, is probably the most satisfying performer on stage, bringing lots of personality. All the key moments from the film are here, and that may be enough for many fans.

From 10 December 2025, social media platforms will be subject to the social media minimum age law. By delaying access, we are protecting young Australians at a critical stage of their development, giving them three more years to build real world connections and online resilience.

Ensuring Australian screen producers can tell Australian stories We have Australian content requirements for Free to Air and pay television, but there are no obligations for streaming services to show us our own stories.

Payday Superannuation Most employers do the right thing but the Australian Taxation Office estimates that in a recent financial year, $6.25 billion of super was unpaid. From 1 July next year, employers will be required to deposit their employees’ super into accounts within seven business days of payday.

For the average 25‑year‑old worker’s retirement balance, more frequent and earlier super contributions amount to an extra $6,000 in today’s dollars.

Our payday super legislation builds on our reforms that make super fairer including: introducing super payments on government paid parental leave; boosting the Low Income Super Tax Offset; and increasing minimum super payments to 12 per cent.

The Albanese Labor Government will introduce an Australian content obligation on streaming services. Those with more than one million Australian subscribers will need to invest at least 10 per cent of their total expenditure for Australia on new local drama, children’s, documentary, arts and educational programs.

Helping Australian businesses The Albanese Labor Government is prioritising local businesses. For the first time in more than two decades, we’re raising the tender threshold so small and medium enterprises will have better access to government contracts worth billions of dollars each year.

From 17 November 2025, only Australian businesses will be able to tender for government contracts under $125,000 and for construction contracts valued below $7.5 million.

THIS 4-year-old rescue Tabby is living his best life in Rozelle with the Young family. Also known as Nelsie (or Lord Nelson, due his regal ways) Nelson had a tough beginning. His mother was abandoned while pregnant, giving birth in a cat shelter in Camden. Nelson was the only kitten that survived.

For the first three years of his life, he lived in a purposebuilt enclosure with his mum and 20 other cats, many of whom were unable to be adopted. The Youngs brought Nelson home then remained lovingly patient for six weeks while Nelson ensconced himself atop the dryer in the laundry, coming down only at night to eat.

Eventually, Nelson gained confidence and now he rules like a lord, sleeping wherever he pleases and requiring a twice daily schedule of pats. He’s very chatty and enjoys sparring with the laser pointer. He loves exploring the backyard where he is frequently visited by other neighbourhood cats, including Thumper, the well-known Maine Coon that lives in the area.

Two years ago, the Youngs lost their beloved dog of 16 years, Bailey. They weren’t ready for another dog and weren’t sure about another pet, but Nelson has been a wonderful addition to the family.

HARPER

ONE of the Peninsula’s larger residents, Harper is a 10-year-old Harlequin Great Dane who lives by the water and turns heads wherever she goes. In her younger years, Harper was a famously naughty puppy, constantly getting into mischief and leaving a trail of chaos in her wake.

These days, she’s well and truly embraced a slower pace of life, trading wild antics for gentle adventures and plenty of admiration from passersby. You’ll often find her happily paddling in the shallows of Blackwattle Bay, lounging with friends at The Sacky, or confidently strutting her stuff along Darling Street like the local icon she is.
