THIS is Lane Cove’s 125th year as a municipality, and what a year! Ignoring the masked elephant in the room, there has been lots for this leafy modern village to celebrate. Of course, taking centre stage is the unveiling of The Canopy. This innovative, diverse, exciting precinct is an example of intelligent and thoughtful planning. The combination of practical and fun; modern chic and naturalistic; commercial and community, sets this up as an example of how to build a contemporary village centre. With Eat Street scheduled to open in October, The Canopy will help position the suburb as an eclectic food destination. Lane Cove Council consistently proves its commitment to sustainability by integrating “green sensibility” into all its projects. It’s reflected in the Green Wall, lawn area, and native landscaping around The Canopy. It’s also exemplified by the opening of four new parks, including the multi-use, highly accessible Mindarie Park. Cammeraygal Park, at the edge of the village centre, commemorates the traditional inhabitants and custodians of the region, whose history, sadly, has mostly been lost. Lane Covians are, without doubt, dog-lovers. Blackman Park became an official doggy playground last year, and the opening of the new Puppytails Cafe will make it the cosmopolitan hub for canines and their humans. We love the Cove…

HISTORY

T

THE name ‘Lane Cove’ first appeared on a chart on 2 Feb 1788, a week after the First Fleet relocated to Sydney Cove from Botany Bay. Lieutenant William Bradley piloted a boat and surveyed the harbour and allocated the name ‘Lane’ to the cove that was the mouth of the river the Cammeraygals knew as Turrumburra. According to the Dictionary of Sydney, “Several possibilities for the name have been suggested; however there are no primary sources which confirm one theory over another. One theory is that the name was bestowed in honour of John Lane, a good friend of Governor Arthur Phillip and son of Sir Thomas Lane who was Lord Mayor of London in 1694. Phillip was the executor of John Lane’s will and they appear to have corresponded regularly. Another theory suggests it was named for Lieutenant Michael Lane, a respected cartographer who worked with Captain James Cook in Canadian waters. Yet another is that the mouth of the Lane Cove River looked just like a narrow laneway and was only an inlet or cove running north from the Parramatta River.” Prior to the arrival of British in 1788, the Lane Cove area was occupied by the Cammeraygal people, a hunter-fisher-gatherer clan of the Dharug-speaking Eora peoples that inhabited the Lower North Shore of what is now Sydney. Their name is derived from Cammeray, their word for the body of water British colonisers renamed Port Jackson, and gal, meaning ‘people of’ – effectively ‘people of the Cammeray’. (The southern shore indigenous communities, with whom the Cammeraygals shared kinship and language ties, called the harbour Cadi - also known as Gadi - hence the people were known as ‘Cadigal’). The first Europeans to set foot in the Lane Cove region were Lieutenant Henry Ball in April 1788, during a trek across the Greenwich peninsula assessing land for future agricultural development, and Lieutenant Ralph Ball on 14 Feb 1790. Ball landed his boat near the mouth of Turrumburra/Lane Cove River with a mission to “establish amicable relations with the Aboriginal people, in order to extract natural resources”, such as shells and timber (eucalypts, bluegum, stringybark, blackbutt, red mahogany and turpentine) for building houses, and grass for roofing thatch and animal fodder.

In 1794 the first land divisions of the ‘five fingers’ of Lane Cove – Linley Point, Riverview, Longueville, Northwood and Greenwich – were given to 27 non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the notorious NSW Corps (infamously known as the ‘Rum Corps’ during the Rum Rebellion military coup against Governor Bligh), who received land grants of 10-12 hectares each. However, few of these grants were settled and many were traded or sold because the land was too steep and rocky for grazing or crop growing, although the timber was highly prized. By 1803, British settler James Wiltshire acquired four 48.5 hectare land grants around Lane Cove. However, a Sept 1804 attack by an estimated 200 indigenous warriors dissuaded him from furthering his interests in the region. This attack was quite likely the impedance to British expansion initiated by resistance leader Pemulwuy (in retaliation to a series of murders of Cammeraygal Aboriginals by Governor Phillip’s gamekeeper John McIntyre), and continued by Pemulwuy’s son Tedbury after his father was murdered and decapitated in June 1802. Wiltshire’s misfortune was further compounded by a bushfire that destroyed 6.8 hectares of his wheat crop in Nov 1804. By 1806 Wiltshire had sold his four Lane Cove farms to former convict Isaac Nichols, who became the British colony’s first postmaster and principal superintendent of convicts between 1810 and 1814. Nichols increased his land holdings across the district and established a wharf in Longueville for trade and the transportation of goods from Sydney Cove (Woodford St was originally known as Nichol’s Wharf Road).

HERE are just a handful of highlights from the century and a quarter of Lane Cove’s lifespan so far. Lane Cove’s first stepping stone to becoming an LGA was as the River Ward - one of two wards that formed North Willoughby Municipality in 1865. A mere 20 years later, the residents were already itchin February 1895, ing for independence and petitioned for their own the new Municipality municipal status, but it was denied. Persistent and of Lane Cove was determined, the feisty residents petitioned again a decade later, and in February 1895, the new Mufinally declared nicipality of Lane Cove was finally declared. With much of its perimeter being outlined by the Lane Cove River, it’s not surprising that early access and transport was mostly by watercraft. Ferries have been servicing the area in one form or another since the early 1800s. The Sydney Ferry service from Circular Quay to Greenwich Point is an iteration of a service that was established in 1850 with a route that travelled further Cont’d along the Lane Cove River.

HISTORY

Fig Tree Bridge, built in 1885, was the first bridge to span Lane Cove River. With early versions of the Gladesville and Iron Cove bridges opening at around the same time, Lane Cove was connected (albeit circuitously) to Sydney town by land transport. Then, in 1932, a certain single span, iconic coat-hanger styled bridge joined the northern and southern shores of Sydney Harbour, and Lane Cove was suddenly not so far away from the big smoke. The opening of Sydney Harbour Bridge led to a huge uptick in residential and commercial growth in the Lane Cove LGA.

The opening of Sydney Harbour Bridge led to a huge uptick in residential and commercial growth in the Lane Cove LGA The Swan Family owned a large parcel of land which they had purchased in 1895. They had tried various commercial ventures including growing strawberries and watermelons but it wasn’t until around 1910 that they finally lighted upon a successful idea. Inspired by the popularity of other pleasure grounds in the area, the family landscaped their property, placed painted cut-outs and sculptures of fairytale characters all around, installed a kiosk, wooden pirate ship, slippery dip, upside-down house and other playground attractions and christened the location Fairyland Pleasure Ground. It was a huge success. A dance hall was added in 1930 along with a netted enclosure in the river so that people could swim. Fairyland lasted until 1969. The land was acquired by National Parks in the1970s, now forming part of Lane Cove National Park.

THREE TREE TRAILS

A

By Alec Smart

AT THE eastern end of Lane Cove Plaza, on the raised flower bed adjoining Longueville Road, is a brown sign with a map displaying Lane Cove Tree Trails. Consisting of three colour-coded walks of varying lengths (the longest is 3km), this project, promoted by Lane Cove Council, “aims to introduce the community to a selection of trees on three trails within Lane Cove.” All three walks, none of which require peak standards of fitness, start and end at Lane Cove Plaza, and the routes are marked by coloured tree stencils along the footpaths. The first, Plaza Tree Trail (pink route), is wheelchair and pushchair friendly; the latter two, Stringybark Tree Trail (orange route) and Riverview Tree Trail (blue route), can also be cycled. The Plaza Tree Trail is a 1km loop of the commercial heart of Lane Cove, which, in a clockwise direction from the plaza and south down Longueville Rd, allows you to grab a takeaway coffee, indulge in a bit of window shopping or inspect an op-shop for bargains, before turning right into Austin St. Thereafter you continue past the rear entrances to Lane Cove Library, Woolworths’ and Coles. Here the trees meet overhead like a green canopy, and if you walk this way in Oct-Nov when the jacarandas are in bloom you’ll gaze up to a gorgeous purple haze. Eventually, continually bearing right, you reach Burns Bay Rd for the home stretch back to the starting point. If you cross over the pedestrian crossing just before the plaza (where you first set off), you can detour into The Village, a little nook of interesting shops around a courtyard, on the north side of Burns Bay Rd. Stringybark Tree Trail, a 2km trek north, departs from the eastern end of Lane Cove Plaza, but heads due north along Longueville Rd, past more op-shops and cafes, where you take the pedestrian footbridge that crosses the M2/Epping Rd. The saunter through suburbia includes Helen St Reserve where, if you’re travelling with kids, they can take time out to maraud through the children’s play area. The route also diverts through Stringybark Reserve, a patch of greenery with several magnificent bluegum trees, which meanders past the backs of houses, in part following Stringybark Creek. Riverview Tree Trail is a 3km trek south that starts at the western end of Lane Cove Plaza and travels a short way along Burns Bay Rd before turning down Tambourine Bay Rd. This route south leads to the bay itself, situated on the Lane Cove River, passing St Ignatius College sports fields at the lower end. There is an option to add a loop before or after the bay via Riverview St. At Tambourine Bay there are several additional bush walks for the more adventurous, including one on the west side of the bay to Riverview Boathouse, passing steep rocks popular with climbers; or another on the eastern side passing the Sea Scouts’ boat shed before following Tambourine Creek through Warraroon Reserve where several forest paths interconnect.

THE CREATURES AND FEATURES OF LANE COVE NATIONAL PARK By Alec Smart

L

LANE COVE National Park is a 372-hectare national park situated about 10 kilometres north-west of Sydney CBD, which follows the Lane Cove River through Macquarie Park (west side) and West Lindfield (east side) north to Pennant Hills and Wahroonga, and south to Sugarloaf Point (at the mouth of Buffalo Creek). The park encompasses a multitude of scenic, forested walking tracks, many of them following the course of the river. These pass through several picnic areas with gas barbecues, furniture, toilets and vehicle parking. Wildlife seen regularly throughout the park include bandicoots, echidnas, swamp wallabies, goannas, squirrel gliders, legless lizards, Daniel’s pythons, black snakes, ringtail and brushtail possums. Birdlife includes boobooks, frogmouths, powerful owls, Azure kingfishers, honeyeaters, goshawks cuckoo doves, black cockatoos, and the ubiquitous brush turkeys. Lane Cove River is divided by a weir about ¾ of the way from its mouth near its source, effectively separating the fresh water running downstream from the tidal saltwater coming up from the Parramatta River. It was constructed in 1938 to create a safe fresh water swimming and boating lake in what was then (and for the next half century) a very popular picnic area. However, the weir, popular among congregating ducks and wide enough to walk and cycle over, can be slippery to cross during rainy weather, when occasionally it is submerged by surging stormwaters. The upper fresh water side, a catchment pool for drains flowing from new housing developments and industrial estates upstream, is now contaminated with run-off pollution. National Parks and Wildlife Service advise against swimming. Adjacent to the weir is a curious series of what at first appear to be small stepping stones. In fact it’s a fish ladder, installed after negotiations between local govt departments and catchment management committees. The weir is a dam that halts movement of native fish up and down-

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

stream, but a fish ladder circumvents this problem. According to Lee de Gail, former National Parks & Wildlife Service ranger, “The fishway provides the necessary link between salt and fresh water to enable native migratory fish to complete their lifecycle. It is a rock ramp structure that is built into the existing weir. It contains a number of small weirs that allow native fish to work their way back upstream around the existing weir on the river. “Unlike Northern Hemisphere fish such as salmon that can leap tall waterfalls with a single leap, our natives are rather lazy and prefer to flipflop their way up creeks and streams. The Lane Cove River fishway is designed to allow for this type of behaviour, providing plenty of pools along the way so the fish can catch their breath. Now they only need to escape the watchful eye of the white faced heron that has installed himself in the fishway.” When this reporter visited the weir a clever white heron (aka a great egret) had indeed perched itself atop the ladder and was poised still and watchful as it awaited arrival of its dinner.

WELLNESS FRESHEN UP YOUR SKIN FOR SPRING TIGHT skin, rough knuckles, chapped lips? Read on and discover some tidbits of information and pieces of advice that can help you achieve that happy, hydrated skin you’re after.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT

1

Limit your shower time and temperature. Yes, soaking in a beautiful hot shower is divine, but not for your skin. It strips it of its natural oils. So, make sure you lower the temperatures (I’m not saying cold showers - that will be another article all together) and shorten your shower time.

2

Immediately after your not-so-hot shower, apply a thick moisturiser to your skin which will seal the moisture in. Don’t wait too long or your chance to seal is gone.

3 Wear sunscreen (even on the grey, overcast days). While there is less UVB around in winter, levels of UVA (or UV-ageing as it is known in the dermatology world) are still significant enough to age our skin. I don’t like ageing my skin unnecessarily.

4

If you’ve been wondering when the best time to start professional skin treatments is, it’s NOW! With sun exposure before or after such procedures there is a higher risk of unwanted post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. As well, you want to be as pale as you naturally can be for IPL hair removal treatments, no fake tan on either until afterwards. The treatments will be fewer (so cheaper) and more effective than treating you with your summer glowing skin. If you are keen to remove pigmentation and broken capillaries, again the treatment will be more effective the paler you are. Plus, you can cover up in clothing (unless treatment is face, then make-up) so no one will see the healing skin - just the amazing results in summer. Autumn and winter therefore represent opportunities for many IPL and laser treatments and chemical peels. Call your salon!!

5 Rosehip oil, rosehip oil, rosehip oil. EVERYONE needs it.

• Dry, dehydrated skin? Rosehip oil • Acne prone skin? Rosehip oil (Not only will it help fight scarring but will balance oil production and DOES NOT CLOG PORES) • Freckly and/or age spots you want reduced? Rosehip oil (Even for hyperpigmentation) • Want to boost collagen? (Who doesn’t?) That’s right, your trusty Rosehip oil wins again. It’s literally the oil for all. Go get some now. NOW!

6 Lastly, cleansers. You must use the right one for your skin because

the wrong one can be quite detrimental, despite your good intentions. For example, if your skin feels tight after cleansing, this indicates you’re missing some oils and water after that cleanse. You are not using the right cleanser. • Dry skin – try cream or oil-based cleansers • Oily skin – foaming and liquid cleansers are better for you • Acne prone skin – a cleanser with an antibacterial wash in it Your skin should feel amazing after a cleanse, not dry, oily or still with remnants of makeup. So, if you experience anything like the aforementioned, you need to rethink your cleanser.

THE COVID lockdown is throwing physical health out of whack, but one Lane Cove business is helping to restore equilibrium. With much of the population now spending most of its time indoors and inactive, it’s not surprising that the rate of physical ailments and complaints has increased. “I’ve been actually busier from the beginning of May than I was early in the year” says Jeremy Lockhart, owner of Rebalance. He has seen an uptick in clients with problems that can be directly linked to lockdown and working from home. “Since the beginning of May I’ve had a lot of people come back that I haven’t seen for some time that have said they’ve been great for two or three years but now they’re working from home, their desk set-up is poor, they’re not walking out of the office and going to a cafe for lunch…” Rebalance is a health centre that takes a holistic approach to pain and injury. Rather than just looking at the local source of pain, they use the principles of myotherapy to consider how the entire body is affected. Myotherapy looks at how muscles that are being tensed in one area can put stress on other parts of body. Rebalance is the first nationally accredited myotherapy college in the country and uses a method developed by Jeremy’s brother. Their clients have included elite athletes, performers and all sorts of people in various occupations. Jeremy grew up in Lane Cove. He recalls the days when it was much smaller, there was less traffic, less density. “It still does have a community feel,” he says. “It’s certainly becoming more of a destination and will do more in future with food.” Some of his clients have been coming to him for years and he’s even treating second and third generations now. “Lane Cove’s changed in its demographic. Certainly there used to be a lot more of an older population. Now the population is much younger. Young families,” Jeremy notes. He has noticed a lot more kids around, especially with the new space in The Canopy. Parking has improved too. “It’ll be interesting to see what changes with the old Coles site down on Burns Bay Rd. There is talk of that being a community centre, a bit of retail, shop-top housing, and redeveloping that carpark,” Jeremy says. He thinks it will be interesting in summer once The Canopy is opened with all the food outlets the green area. “There’s not many Town Centres like Lane Cove in metropolitan Sydney that I can think of that have a facility like that.

THIS highly targeted weight-loss method helps you shape your body without too much time or effort. Bohdana Zajickova has worked in Lane Cove for six years and has recently moved to the area with her family. “Absolutely love Lane Cove! It’s just so nice and I love it,” Bohdana told Neighbourhood Media. “It’s just so convenient for me having a business and living in the area. There are lots of lovely parks - we have a dog who loves the parks here. It’s very nice. I’ve always loved Lane Cove.” Bohdana owns and runs Hypoxi, a body-shaping studio that uses a combination of low impact exercise and modern technology to help people lose weight in targeted areas of the body. “Clients can drop a dress size in a month - that’s the Australian average,” she says. The method uses alternating pressure to stimulate blood flow in specific areas of the body. It’s up to three times more effective in reducing fat in targeted zones than regular exercise. “Clients love it because you don’t sweat so much,” says Bohdana. “They can fit it in their lunch break. You don’t need to shower. The sessions are very short so you can fit it in easily.” The exercises are customised for each client. A program begins with a one on one consultation in which lifestyle and nutrition are discussed, and goals identified. “It’s very individual, it’s a small, boutique studio, It’s very much personalised, by appointment only,” explains Bohdana. “People know when they come in they’ll do their session and they’ll get as much or as little talking during their session as they require.” It’s a technique that can be used in conjunction with other exercise or on its own. It doesn’t require any particular level of fitness and is in fact ideal for people returning to exercise after a long sedentary period or injury. There’s no age limit, either. Bohdana has clients from age 19 through to 75.

THE Canopy has its grand opening set for October but it is already establishing itself as the hub and soul of Lane Cove village. It’s hard to imagine that the multi-level, functional and aesthetically pleasing precinct that is The Canopy was once an unattractive and inefficient carpark. The designers have made optimal use of the physical space, thinking not only outside the box but above and below it. The result is a showpiece of urban architecture that has the charm and ambience of a town square. There is literally something for everyone here. The kid’s playground features equipment that will exercise little muscles as well as little brains. It’s surrounded by gardens and has an open, natural feel. Adjacent to it is the lawn area, where young legs can run free while older legs stretch out

under the sun and enjoy the sights and sounds from the high-tech stage and screen. Eat Street will tend to the taste buds while the below-decks supermarkets and carpark will make shopping a pleasure. Take a walk along the Solar Arbour, a promenade lined with unique printed solar panels. It is the only public place in Australia to date where you can see this breakthrough technology. With outdoor markets, entertainment and more planned, The Canopy will be the epicentre of life in Lane Cove.

SYDNEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL is an independent selective boys’ school and one of Australia’s oldest schools, officially founded in 1854. Exactly 100 years later St Ives Preparatory School was established on the site of a former orchard - some of the original pear trees can be found on the grounds. The cottage style building held 85 students. Today, the expanded and modernised school enrols over 400 boys each year, educating them from pre-school to Year 6, priming them for transition to the high school in College Street, Sydney. “Our school is suited to curious boys who love learning, enjoy asking questions and thinking deeply,” says current Headmaster, Ian Stephens. “Grammar boys love being busy “ and seek engagement and con"We understand that nection. All our learning is done within the context of a relationship.” a Grammar education Ian has been headmaster of St will give them enormous opportunities in life, and Ives for almost nine years. We emphasise learning in collaboration because social skills are essential for a happy and productive life,” explains Mr Stephens. “We are very interested in what sort of men our boys will grow up to be and are mindful of the influence we can have in their formative years. The values we instil and modelling from the key adults in their lives play a crucial role in their development. We understand that a Grammar education will give them enormous opportunities in life, and we want them to make a positive difference in the world they will grow up into.” Mr Stephens shares his own love of reading (Tolkien is a favourite), shark diving (personal videos are essential), classical music (the school has a full symphony orchestra of over 100 boys) and sport (you can love reading and science and display excellence in sport!) He is both a dedicated and grateful headmaster. “SGS is an extraordinary place and I am still pinching myself that I am part of this family after all these years.”

MINDARIE PARK IS COMPLETE

THIS new, versatile park in Lane Cove North is a welcome addition to the expanding neighbourhood. After much anticipation, Mindarie Park is now open. The park, on Mindarie Street near the corner of Kullah Parade, is a multi-use green space featuring a number of amenities. Stage 1 was completed in February 2019 with the building of an inclusive playground in line with the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play initiative. Everyone Can Play provides guidelines on how to make play areas that can be accessed by "Stage 1 was people of all abilities, as well as incompleted in February stalling equipment that can be used by everyone. 2019 with the building The second stage of Mindarie of an inclusive Park project has just been completplayground” ed and includes a timber and rope obstacle course, a rain garden, an amphitheatre and performance area, a multi-use games area, large turf area, two new picnic shelters, barbecues, bubblers and accessible picnic settings. The surrounding area has been landscaped using large plants to create a natural green barrier around the park, with trees already having been planted in February 2019 to provide shade. There is parking for eight cars alongside the park. It’s an exciting recreational venue and a worthwhile community asset.

POOL

N G IN A

A POOL can feel like an oasis in the backyard and add value to your property - if you do it right. With the warm breath of summer in the air and the likelihood of a resort holiday still off in the distance, it’s an opportune time to consider installing a pool. Not only can a well designed pool improve the value of your home, but it will add to your quality of home-life. Before you grab a shovel and start digging, however, there are a few things you need to consider. The best thing to do, of course, is contact a qualified pool expert and get their advice, but here’s a brief checklist to help you get started. Why do you want a pool? For fitness, entertaining, relaxing, aesthetics,

WHEN it comes to interior decorating there’s no easier way to liven up a room and add colour, texture, and style than by putting a few well-chosen plants around the place. Contrary to common misgivings, most indoor plants are quite easy to keep and they don’t always need to be in sunny, airy location: some thrive in the bathroom; others are perfectly content in a cool, dim, hallway. The sheer variety of indoor plants available makes them extremely versatile as decorative items. From palms that can fan out to fill a cavernous corner, to vines that can be trained across a stark archway, to small cacti that can add humour and interest to a bare windowsill, there’s a plant that will suit every situation. Yet plants also have benefits beyond the aesthetic. Studies have suggested that having plants inside a home or workspace will increase positive mood and lead to better productivity and harmony. Plants are an organic filtering machine that suck in carbon dioxide and release it as oxygen. Many houseplants act as air purifiers, actually absorbing toxins including benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene. Having said all this, there are some plants you should steer clear of if you have pets or young children - they may cause adverse reactions in humans and can even be fatal to cats and dogs. The best thing to do, always, is speak to an expert who can guide you on the best choice of plants for your circumstances. Go to a local nursery. They’ll be familiar with the climate and soil in the area, as well as any pests or diseases. Get to know them and you’ll be able to pop in any time for advice or to add to your plant family.

increase value, or because the kids won’t stop nagging? What’s your budget? A pool is not just a hole in the ground filled with water. It will require fencing, decking, filters, cleaning equipment, chemicals, lighting, furniture, cocktail accessories. Factor in all of these plus ongoing maintenance when determining your budget. Where will it go? Gone are the days when rectangular or kidney-shaped were your only options. Now you can find a design to suit any space and purpose: long lap, plunge, above or in-ground, naturalistic, geometric and more. However, you will need to think about what’s around, above, and underneath the proposed pool. Trees and other foliage may cause issues with roots, leaves, animal droppings, and shade. Surrounding buildings and towers may also create unwanted shading as well as unwanted onlookers. How will stormwater run-off affect the pool? Are there pipes or wires deep beneath the soil? (call Dial Before You Dig). Is there a bed of hard, impenetrable rock? Check with council about any specific regulations regarding boundaries etc. How will you get to and from the pool, and around it? Will wet people and wet pets have to trudge across grass or dirt bringing dirty footprints into the house? Will they need to traverse hard surfaces heated to barbecue temperatures in summer? Where will they shower, dress, put their cocktails? How will people get around the pool to access other areas of the property? Once you’ve answered the basic questions, you can start thinking about more indulgent stuff like whether you want swim jets (perfect for smaller pools), a spa, infinity edge, waterfall or other features, floating cocktail bar. Remember, a qualified, trusted pool expert will be able to help you make informed, optimal decisions. So go ahead, take the plunge!

IT’S time to come out of hibernation, and while we can’t actually leave the cave yet, we can still give it a fresh new look. Winter was pretty cold and uninspiring but there’s a hint of spring and optimism in the air. Many of us are desperate for a change of scenery and the best way to get that without breaking any rules, is by sprucing up your decor - inside and out. You don’t need to go big - some well thought out items can make a huge difference. Get some new cushions for the lounge; don’t just look at colours, either. Play around with shapes, sizes, textures and trims. Be adventurous and go with something completely different to what you have now. Scented candles and diffusers can instantly change the feel of a room and help clear out the mustiness. Interesting ornaments, lamps, trinkets, and wall hangings can break the visual monotony and tedious familiarity of a space. If you’ve got an outdoor area, then you’ll want to make the most of it. It’s worth investing in comfortable, practical furniture that you can spend time on, eat at, entertain (responsibly) with, and that is also stylish and durable. Outdoor furniture comes in such a diverse range of sizes and styles that you can find something to suit any space, from a sprawling lawn to a cosy little nook; you can even get a swing chair to hang off that enormous gum tree branch. For a more dramatic change, how about a new wall colour inside or bold outside colour statement. Painting is a simple and fairly forgiving way to experiment with schemes or simply freshen up something you’re already happy with.

THE CAFE THAT’S GONE TO THE DOGS

CHEW CHEW caters to furry, four-legged patrons only, but the new Puppy Tails cafe will welcome humans too. Naoko Okamoto came to Australia over 10 years ago with the Japanese company for whom she was working. She loved the country so much she wanted to stay but she needed to find a new source of income. Her English was not very good at the time, so she considered her options. “I love cooking, I love dogs, so…” So, she started a restaurant for pets, of course! “It was a big risk because at that time the pet food restaurant was nowhere,” says Naoko. Chew Chew Pet Restaurant at Wollstonecraft is still quite unique and certainly was when it first opened - Naoko had to jump through hoops to

get approval. Regulations regarding food preparation in Australia strictly forbid food for humans and food for animals being prepared in the same space, so Chew Chew is for dogs only. It’s ironic because the quality of the ingredients used by Naoko surpasses those used by some outlets catering to humans. “Organic chicken, organic lamb. It’s all organic. And fresh salmon from the fish market,” Naoko says. The protein is combined with “I LOVE COOKING, vegetables to create very healthy, satisfying meals that can be eaten I LOVE DOGS, SO…” on premises or taken home. NaoSO, SHE STARTED A RESTAURANT ko has certification in nutrition and her mother is also a nutritionist so FOR PETS, OF COURSE! she knows exactly what to put in these doggie dishes. Some customers consider a Chew Chew meal a treat for their fur-babies, but for others whose dogs have an illness or condition, it is essential eating. Chew Chew also hosts doggie parties. Naoko is very excited about the pending opening of her new kiosk style doggie cafe in Blackman Park. Puppy Tails will serve doggie beverages and pre-prepared meals from Chew Chew, but, more importantly, will also serve coffee for humans. “Now we have the dog cafe with humans too. That is really happy for me!” says Naoko, who is also thrilled about the location. “It’s very beautiful; dog friendly.” On weekdays, dogs can run around off-leash. So, does Naoko herself have a dog? “Of course! It’s a cavalier cross Shih Tzu. 15 years old.” And his name? “Douglas.”

SAGA

SAGA

SAGA is a Bernese Mountain Dog from Hunters Hill, but lives very close to Lane Cove. She visits her mum’s stall sometimes at the monthly Lane Cove Makers Market. Her favourite treat stall there is Healthy Hound Treats, all natural and made by Virginia. She always has a fuss made of her when she visits. Sometimes we see other Bernese Mountain dogs there including a lovely local one named Flora who is actually Saga’s mother and who, of course, lives in Lane Cove. Before Saga, we had Bernie and Angus who used to love going to Blackman Park in Lane Cove with the Bernese Mountain Dog club. Lane Cove is great for Saga with nice local parks and friendly locals.

ONE thing that has made confinement to our homes a little easier is having a pet (or several) around. While it’s hard to get work done when the cat insists on sitting on your keyboard or the dog looks at you expectedly after every movement thinking it’s going for yet another walk, there’s no doubt that our fur/feather/scale babies fill the void of lengthy days at home better than any streaming binge can. Pets are a unique all-in-one package: they give you complete attention, provide COVID-free cuddles, entertain you, urge you to exercise, and encourage you to relax. Whether it’s a dog, cat, fish, bird, horse, lizard, rabbit, turtle, giant stick-insect, or anything else that can safely live with humans, a pet can be beneficial in so many ways. Pets keep us grounded. They require routine and diligence which makes them great for training kids! IT’S BEEN PROVEN TIME It’s been proven time and again AND AGAIN THAT KEEPING A PET that keeping a pet can improve mental and even physical health. CAN IMPROVE MENTAL AND EVEN Animals can bring people toPHYSICAL HEALTH. gether and deliver joy just by being themselves -even if they belong to someone else. “One of our greatest joys is seeing a family welcome a pet into their home. We especially love sharing the journey as they return for advice, products, and a chat.” That’s how the staff feel at The Pet Connection. The family owned business has been in St Ives for 25 years and they never tire of introducing a non-human member to its new family. Their love and knowledge extends to dogs, cats, fish, birds, rabbits, reptiles and they’d be happy to arrange an introduction to any or all of the above. “We encourage responsible pet ownership, and ensure people are ready for the commitment a pet requires. We know how important it is to ensure our animals go to loving homes and remain there for life.”

FOOD

M

LITTLE RED ROBIN SETS UP PERCH IN BIRDWOOD LANE “Food presentation is critical to our style of dining – it’s the attention to detail that sets one apart. However it is also the produce that is critical.” Poor produce, no matter how well presented, will lead to a disappointing dish. “We believe we achieve both presentation & produce quality. I also believe that quality images are critical, as they have to tell the story. I have a brand and marketing background and have always valued the quality of brand presentation,” says Michelle. This is reflected in our branding, marketing and our images. For the latest shoot, we engaged Kitti Gould, a well-known Sydney food photographer and I was thrilled when she took us on as a client. The latest images are just brilliant.” They’ve just launched a brand new degustation menu with both a short & long options, plus a casual wine bar menu. Michelle has some recommendations: “Right now, my favourite picks are the Chicken Liver Parfait on the Wine Bar Menu and the O’Connor Angus & Hereford / Koji / Silverbeet and the 3yo Gouda / Sherry Caramel / Grapefruit Tart on the Long Degustation… (plus a nice glass of red of course!)” The wine menu is its own gustatory journey. “We have a stunning all European wine list available which has been carefully developed by Alessandro Nelli. We like to take customers on a journey with the wines, and we love to see them try something they have never heard of before. We have drops from places like Turkey, Greece, Austria and from the favourite areas of Italy, Spain & France too! We are now offering a range of SAKE as well and we will soon broaden our range to include some really special Australian wines from boutique and bespoke wineries.” This stylish establishment is setting the tone for what is destined to be premium dining destination on the north shore.

Little Red Robin

MICHELLE WARREN is the General Manager Marketing & Operations & Co-Owner of Little Red Robin Restaurant & Wine Bar which has been a key dining venue since it opened in November 2018. Though she and partner, Alessandro, don’t live in Lane Cove they feel very much a part of the community. “Since having the business in Lane Cove, we have become somewhat like locals,” says Michelle. “We love the village atmosphere, the buzz of lots of families around, lots of small businesses and we love that it is a growing foodie hub too. I also LOVE my coffee from Birdwood Café!” They chose to locate their restaurant in Lane Cove because they wanted to be surrounded by other restaurants. “We are super excited about the dining precinct at The Canopy. When we found the site, we were opposite the old car park, but we knew in time it would be a great spot being opposite other restaurants on Birdwood Lane,” Michelle explains. “We are eager for them to open and know that the businesses that are coming are going to enhance the area even more.” Little Red Robin offers a beautifully presented degustation menu. “The degustation dining experience allows us to take patrons on a journey, where they leave the decisions up to us,” says Michelle. The timing and order in which menu items are served (with matching wines if selected) reflect the expertise of the chef and contribute to a more sophisticated dining experience. There is a formal dining room as well as the wine bar and each has its own consummate new menu. “This new degustation menu has allowed our head chef, Alberto Ranalli, to be very creative. He has enjoyed this process very much. The flavours, produce and presentation of dishes are all amazing and some dishes really surprise – such as the Jerusalem Artichoke / White Chocolate / Almond dessert,” says Michelle.

THE exciting new dining precinct welcomes an elite chef to the table. One of Australia’s preeminent chefs and a specialist in South East Asian cuisine, Milan Strbac, is in the process of fitting out his new restaurant, Sugarlane, which is scheduled to open this October as part of the muchanticipated launch of The Canopy. It’s a project that impressed him from the moment it was pitched. “Basically, when it was presented to me at first, I had a look at the renders - the way it was gonna look and feel - and I thought… I really believed in the development, because I think the council and the designers have gone above and beyond to deliver a great centrepiece for the area,” recalls Milan. As a Coogee resident, Milan wasn’t really familiar with Lane Cove. In fact, he had an exaggerated perception of how far away it was until he did the drive and discovered it only took him 22 minutes from home to Eat Street. The capacious, cleverly designed new car park under The Canopy also put his fear of finding a spot to rest. Lane Cove is firmly establishing itself as a dining precinct and Milan believes a new concept in South East Asian will sit well with other offerings. The variety of restaurants is another thing that attracted him to the project. “I think the mix they’ve got in there is really good and every tenant will complement each other.” Milan’s passion for Asian cooking began after he had lunch at the much lauded Longrain Thai restaurant in Surry Hills. He was so enthralled with the food, he immediately applied for a job in their kitchen and then spent five years learning the secrets of Thai-based cooking. “That’s where I realised this is the cuisine I wanted to stick to,” says Milan. “I like the sharing concept. I’m not a big fan of having a big meal to myself these days. I like the spice side of things, I like curries…” He expanded his repertoire to include styles from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia and opened up his own restaurant. For Sugarlane, he plans to put signature meals on the menu as well as developing exciting new ideas. “You can get regional stuff now where before you couldn’t do that,” says Milan, reflecting on how the dining landscape in Australia has changed over time. “I think it’s just the variety. And I think people like to be able to come to a Southeast Asian restaurant where they can have a dish from Thailand, a dish from Malaysia, a dish from Vietnam.” It’s a challenging time to even keep a business running, let alone open a new one, but Milan is prudently optimistic. “We are hoping to open up in October. I think it will still be limited seating because I think this social distancing will still be around.” Most of Lane Cove will be keeping their fingers crossed, too. thecanopylanecove.com.au/eat-street
