In the third installation of our Lane Cove History feature, we look at how the forested fingers of Lane Cove district transitioned from timber and industry to homesteads and schools. In 1885 Fig Tree Bridge opened, the first bridge crossing Lane Cove River, linking Burns Bay Rd on Linley Point to Hunters Hill on the south bank. It consisted of iron trusses that opened to allow passage of ferries and cargo ships. The route south connected traffic to the first Gladesville and Iron Cove bridges (also opened in the 1880s), enabling faster transportation of goods and people into the heart of the city. On 1 Jan 1890, a rail line between St Leonards and Hornsby opened, with an extension south to Milsons Point Wharf opening in May 1893, which carried steam trains until it converted to electric rail in 1928.

Northwood House was the first estate built in the Lane Cove area, designed by Edmund Blackett (who also designed Sydney University). Northwood House was the first estate built in the Lane Cove area, designed by Edmund Blackett (who also designed Sydney University and St Andrew’s Cathedral) and built by the Davy family in 1878. The ferry wharf at Northwood Point was also built by the Davys, along with a ferry upon which the family could commute to the city. The wharf was later donated to the community. After owner Jane Davys’ death in 1903, Northwood House was sold to Abdul Wade, a wealthy camel importer and breeder from the Bourke Camel Carrying Company, who kept his camels on the grounds which he brought in via the wharf below. In 1917 he gambled and lost the Northwood House in a poker game and relocated to Chatswood.

Lane Cove National Park is the perfect destination for the Australian wood duck (chenonetta jubata). Be sure to visit in spring with the kids, when the hatchlings come out. These mediumsized ducks adapt well to most conditions and this national park is the perfect habitat for them. The male duck can be distinguished from the female by its darker head. When it comes to Lane Cove, even your own backyard can be the perfect place for birdwatching. If you have a Eucalyptus tree in, or surrounding, your property, it’s fun to watch the Pacific baza (aviceda subcristata), which you will find there chasing insects. The Pacific baza used to be regarded as rare vagrants in Sydney, however more recently they have been recognised as established residents in the forested areas throughout the region. There are plenty of birdwatching and photography groups in Lane Cove that you may like to connect with if you are an enthusiast. There is also BirdLife Southern NSW, who have more extensive information and who publish online content to help you identify different species. They host a number of events and activities for enthusiasts, so its worth looking them up if you are looking to take your passion to the next level.

ARTS LANE COVE THEATRE COMPANY

C

Lochie Beh is the president of the Lane Cove Theatre Company (LCTC). 2066 caught up with Lochie and quizzed him on their new production, Steel Magnolias. CAN you provide us with a brief introduction to who you are and your background? Thanks for asking, I’ve been in theatre for as long as I could walk! Performing in some way or another. With Lane Cove Theatre Company, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most outstanding talent and personalities in the industry. Tell us a little about the Lane Cove Theatre Company? LCTC has been in existence for 26 years. In that time we have had world premiere productions, new original works staged, classics and cult productions. We have welcomed seasoned performers as well as beginners. We encourage all aspects of theatre to be involved, from stage to tech, bands to front-ofhouse, costumes to set design. Can you provide a brief introduction to Steel Magnolias and how it came about showcasing at the Lane Cove Theatre? A beautiful, bittersweet comedy set in America’s deep south, Steel Magnolias chronicles the lives and friendships of six women in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Supporting each other through triumphs and tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s Beauty Spot, to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children. Despite their differences, beautiful and impulsive Shelby, her strong-willed mother M’Lynn, beauty parlour owner Truvy, elegant widow Clairee, sharp-tongued Ouiser and mousy newcomer Annelle enjoy a friendship that spans the boundaries of age and status. Sharing each other’s strength and loyalty, these six remarkable women survive the cycles of life, birth and death to emerge stronger, closer and still laughing! Trent Gardiner (director) has always had a connection to this play, and we felt it would be a great addition to our 25th season in 2020. Steel Magnolias was originally scheduled to show in 2020 what happened, and how did this make you and the cast feel? Three weeks into rehearsals in 2020 we had to cancel due to the global [Covid-19] pandemic. We were determined this production would go ahead, so we included it in our 2021 season. The cast and crew were devastated to have to cancel but felt it was the right decision, based on the current situation in March 2020. We were hopeful that it would go ahead as all the cast felt it deserved to be on stage. With the support of LCTC

08

that will now be a reality. Were any changes necessary for the delayed Steel Magnolias production? One cast member had to be replaced due to scheduling conflicts, however we are now well into rehearsals, and it is going great. The cast are working on their southern dialects, and busy work shopping hairstyles. Rehearsals are full of emotional roller coasters, lots of pink and a whole lot of fun. Are there any up-and-coming stars in this production/ theatre company we should be looking out for? There is always new talent coming through the doors of LCTC. The previous production showcased just the amount of talent that is coming into Lane Cove. In Steel Magnolias we have 6 incredibly talented ladies that will take you on a journey of laughter through tears and a whole lot of emotion. What’s the best thing you love about Lane Cove? It’s a vibrant, eclectic community that embraces the performing arts. A lovely village atmosphere surrounded by beautiful nature. What do you recommend for budding actors or actresses keen to get on stage that they do to kick-start their career in theatre? The best advice we can offer is that age doesn’t matter. You are never too young or old to get involved. Do your research into what you would like to do and what you love. Also production work: on-stage, technical, costumes, front-ofhouse, directing, stage management.... the list is endless. This year LCTC is offering Masterclasses with renowned masters of their craft. What is on the horizon for you and are there any new productions in the pipeline? A Streetcar Named Desire is headed for the stage in August, and in November we will have our children’s production Hercules. In September we will also stage our 10x10 minute short plays - In a Nutshell.

Are You Ready for the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee? AS AUSTRALIA continues to bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic, North Shore Theatre Company (NSTC) is proud to be one of Sydney’s first community theatre groups to return to the stage, with their production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee set to open at Chatswood’s Zenith Theatre on the 23rd of April. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a Tony and Drama Desk award winning musical comedy, centred around six quirky adolescents and the even quirkier adults charged with their care. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals their hopes, struggles and passions as they compete for the coveted prize of Spelling Champion. Originally cast in November 2019 and slated for a May 2020 curtain, the production is now 18 months in the making, with the cast and crew having overcome a multitude of obstacles and challenges to get their show off the ground, including the ongoing uncertainty around whether the show would ever see the light of day as COVID restrictions changed. Director/Choreographer Fiona Kelly reflects on the challenges of 2020: “When the Sydney lockdown came into effect last March we were only six weeks away from what was supposed to be our opening night. The tears of disappointment and frustration from some of the cast nearly broke my heart so I am so happy that these young, talented and enthusiastic performers are FINALLY going to get their chance to shine”. NSTC President Dave Verdejo adds: “I’ve been blown away by our cast and crew’s resilience and dedication to this production through some very trying and uncertain times. NSTC is now in its 70th year, and this is the single longest rehearsal period we’ve ever seen. I can’t wait for Spelling Bee to finally hit the stage and for the community to experience this hilarious show.” Tickets to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee are available now through Trybooking. HOME bubbles of red are just as happy growing in a tub as in the garden, so long as you remember to water them. Cherry Tomatoes do prefer the warmer weather though, so be sure to give them plenty of sun and during the winter keep them in a greenhouse-type environment as they generally don’t like too much cold weather, especially frost. They can grow indoors, although you may find they are more productive fruit-wise, growing outside. Try a home-made garlic and pepper spray for your tomatoes to protect them from insects. Start by blending 2 bulbs of garlic with two hot peppers. Add ½ cup water and blend again for 5 minutes, then strain using a cheesecloth. Dilute this mixture before using by adding ¼ of the mixture to 4 litres of water.

Growing your salad garden in a small space is easier than you might think.

EDIBLE FLOWERS

Are you ready to take on the green thumb challenge and grow your own veggie patch? Well, to get you started, we’ve put together some details on a couple of varieties of edible plants that do particularly well in backyards that any green, or even not-sogreen, thumb can grow.. HERBS

Herbs do not take up much space at all and can be a great addition to a salad or pasta dish. They also do not require much work and with a little love and care can produce a stunning display in literally any space. As we are approaching the cooler months, be sure to choose perennials (plants that can live three or more sessions) as they tend to be more resilient through the cold weather. This includes herbs such as thyme, chives, mint, oregano, lavender and tarragon. Give your herbs good drainage, regular water and sun. Some herbs prefer more sun than others, such as basil, chives, oregano and rosemary. More delicate herbs such as parsley and chives should be positioned where they get a mix of shade and some sun. Be sure to get yourself some organic bug spray to look after their delicate leaves, though, as caterpillars and other pests can quickly strip your herbal beauties overnight. For a homemade remedy try a few drops of dishwashing liquid mixed with one litre of water and spray away. Do not use dishwashing liquid or soap that contains degreaser or bleach. CHERRY TOMATOES

Tomatoes are a great choice and there are plenty of varieties to choose from. If you are challenged for space these tasty little

There is no better way to decorate your salad masterpiece than using edible flowers. There are plenty of edible flower kits around to buy, and from seedlings they take about two to three weeks to grow. These little beauties can be grown indoors and outdoors and are fairly easy to care for. They are usually quite hardy and can cope with full and partial sun and have no problem growing in pots. Go online or head to your nearest farmers market or look for edible flowers in your home & garden centre, where you can choose from options such as nasturtium, native violet, viola, purslane and French marigold. The basic dishwashing liquid insect-deterrent spray works well for these, and be sure to spray underneath the leaves where the hungry bugs hangout. LETTUCE LEAVES Lettuce leaves are a must for your homegrown salad and the goodnews is they can be grown year-round. Root space is the key to goodlettuce, as they like plenty of room. A good quality soil mix that retains water is alsoimportant. Loose lettuce leaf types, such as red or green oak lettuce, spinach, rocket and alfalfa, grow best in pots. Lettuce grows well in around 6 hours of sun a day, but can also tolerate some shade, especially when it gets really hot. Most leaf lettuce will reproduce after you cut the leaves two or three times. Be sure to cut a few inches above the soil level and continue to water. Harvest in the morning when the leaves are cool and crisp. Slugs love lettuce, so try placing some cracked eggshells around the base as a deterrent, and use the above-mentioned detergent spray for the leaves.

THE LEGEND

REBORN By Robert Everett

O

The BMW M3/M4 is a modern day legend, and North Shore BMW will help put you into one. A decision that tells people you understand true driving.

ONE expects some sort of celestial event to coincide with the launch of a new ‘M car’ from BMW, but this time it appears the new M3/M4 have arrived just in time to save us all from a slightly more biblical plague. The BMW M3 is a motoring legend, an icon, an embodiment of the “ultimate driving machine”... which has been BMW’s USP for longer than I care to remember. So it is an exciting time when a new iteration of the uber-saloon/coupé reaches our sunny shores. The 2021 M3/M4, offered now through the fantastic folk at North Shore BMW, arrives with some big shoes to fill. The lineage of this legend started with the Daddy E30 M3, back in 1986, which was originally built by the BMW Motorsport division specifically as an homologation special, to allow BMW to go racing and absolutley crush the competition in Germany’s DTM race series. The styling and engineering changes were made purely for racing glory, but the recipe proved so poular to the buying public that a convertible was added as an option as well as the exsisting coupé. That car, like every one since, offers some truly impressive performance tech in a practical saloon/coupé body style, and although not specifically designed for racing these days, the car is no less formidable on the track, or your favourite back road. The new M3/M4 (M3 - is a four door saloon, M4 - is a two door coupé) is just as bombastic as it’s mighty predecessors, offering a staggering 375kW (in Competition fom) from a 3.0L inline 6 cylinder engine, with twin turbos, that gives a claimed 0-100kph in a hilarious 3.9 seconds. All this power is put down to the poor, unsuspecting tarmac via an eight speed ‘M Steptronic’ (sports auto) gearbox (purists rejoice, a manual is available on the entry level), to the rear wheels (four wheel drive will be an option later) allowing for some truly thrilling drives.... and skids, should you find yourself on a private road, naturally. Mercifully the interiors and creature comforts have improved over the years - the original M3 being somewhat “monastic” compared to the tech we have become used to today. So, as well as beautiful M Sport seats the M3/M4 has a truly impressive barrage of safety tech to keep you in your lane, alert you to crossing traffic, brake you in stop/start traffic, radar cruise control to keep up with the ebb and flow of motorway traffic.... everything to make those “chore” journeys much less taxing.

Inside, the industry-leading I-Drive system continues to impress, connectivity being one of the key selling points in new car purchases, a telling sign of these tech-savvy times. BMW, once famed for it’s underated, “Russian doll” styling (where the 3, 5 and 7 all looked remarkably similar to one another), has been much more bold with the styling of the new M3/M4. The car looks agressive, unapologetically sporty, with vents and gills and spoilers added to what is ultimately, a very traditional, pretty coupé profile. Most obvious are the giant, flared nostrils of the traditional “kidney grill” which look like their main function - apart from channeling air to that mighty engine - is to help sniff out the next fantastic stretch of road. And that is exactly what this car is designed for; it’s purpose is to bring excitement and joy to your next journey, to encourage you to take the long way home, to appreciate something truly, historically.... biblically special.

Even our backyards are likely to be home to hundreds of little critters, and it's only a matter of searching before you find them. This issue we are celebrating our Australian bird life, and we have a special challenge in mind for our younger viewers. We want you to look up into the skies, the trees and along the waterways and see how many of our Australian species you can find. Tick the box if you can find all ten and be sure to negotiate a prize with mum and dad for completing the list. Oh, and if you manage to get a photo too, we would love you to share it with us online. Simply hashtag #neighbourhoodmedia.

For the adults who want a challenge, see this more comprehensive Ku-ring-gai Chase bird list to test your skills. It's a comprehensive list generated from the eBird database on birds spotted in the Ku-ring-gai Chase area. ebird.org/australia /printableList?regionCode=L921057&yr=all&m=

Term class options include painting and drawing, with the incorporation of either mixed media, collage or printmaking, ceramics/pottery, and sewing. Holiday workshops include an even broader selection of mediums and activities including textiles handprinting, knitting, polymer clay jewellery making, macrame and paper-based or mixed media sculpting. We have recently introduced a new focus on teenage courses in painting and drawing on three different weekdays after school. One option includes printmaking, the other looks at painting and drawing through the lenses of art history, while a third is drawing and anime focused. All our courses are taught by tertiary art/craft qualified and experienced teachers, many of whom are active exhibiting artists

BEST BRUNCH

Garçon

GARÇON breakfast’s are something to behold - and feature on your Instagram! Nestled in the quiet walkways of The Canopy, Garçon offers indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks menu. Our favourite way to enjoy this little slice of French paradise is over a lazy (and boozy) brunch on a Saturday morning. There’s a simple, yet amazing breakfast menu - you can’t go past the berry french toast and Avocado toast that looks like it’s been plucked from a photo shoot. Now here’s the clincher - Garçon are offering special brunch packages (only $69 pp) which include free-flowing bubbles for 90 minutes as well as a four course brunch menu - available every weekend and you can book online now!

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

Lillah

LILLAH, in central Lane Cove, is a celebration of Arabic food and culture. This stunning restaurant has been carefully designed from top to bottom, including its spectacular menu. Choose flavours and dishes from the Middle East that have been reinvented with a modern twist. The stand-out dish for us is their Sticky Date 12 hour Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, with date and Sumac molasses, toum and toasted almonds. This dish gets a five-star rating from everyone lucky enough to try it. The rest of the menu is filled with equally delicious Middle Eastern favourites, including Lebanese BBQ Half Chicken, Chickpea Gnocchi and Beetroot Basteeya. All the food at Lillah has been carefully designed to deliver a story with flavours passed on from generations. Whilst we recommend visiting the restaurant and diving into the full experience, they do have an online order option https://lillahkitchen.com/takeaway

PETS Are you looking for a furry friend to join your family? Have you set your heart on a particular designer breed? Maybe you should think again about pedigrees..

d

DID you know researchers at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, revealed that a dog’s environment influenced their aggression levels and overall behaviour more than their breed’s reputation? Each dog is a sentient being and although they may be a textbook example of their breed, they could be the polar opposite! Yes, your designer Cavoodle could inflict as much damage as a 5 year-old rescue Staffy! In light of this, we encourage our readers to consider ADOPTING - not SHOPPING. If you are considering adding a furry friend to your family why not drop in to one of the rescue centres below to meet the residents? And if you’re not looking to adopt, there are still lots of ways you can get involved!

Monika’s Doggie Rescue

Our very own shelter North of the Bridge, Monika’s Doggie Rescue is a NO KILL Shelter, helping dogs that have found themselves on Death Row in various pounds across Sydney find their forever homes. All dogs rescued from the pound are microchipped, heartworm tested and given a basic health check + vaccinations from a qualified veterinarian. After returning to health, they are then put up for adoption. Monika’s Doggie Rescue also offers an amazing ‘dog-walking’ program, which is fully available to the public.

THE NORTH SHORE BEAGLES MADE up of Daisy (1.5 y/o) and Coco (14) - these two lemon and white beagles are practically insta-famous. They set up their very own Instagram (@thenorthshorebeagles) during COVID, and now have over 5k followers! You can often find these guys hanging out at Pottery Green or having a wander around the Canopy. They are always up for a cuddle; little Daisy is especially fond of children - she is definitely still a toddler at heart!

FRANCO FRANCO is a 4 year old cavalier King Charles spaniel. He loves going for walks -especially down to Burns Bay Reserve, playing with his many toys and snuggling up on the couch with his mum. He also loves to chew the ferns on the balcony when no one’s looking, but he’ll never admit that!

FRANKIE A VIVACIOUS and very playful one year old Siberian husky, who lives with his mum Venus (4 years of age). Frankie loves to meet and play with other dogs, especially at Blackman Park and Bob Campbell Oval, where he is such a social butterfly! He is not into chasing balls by himself, but will chase dogs chasing their own balls. He loves to sleep on his back with his legs in the air and as a typical husky enjoys a good chat and is very vocal, *awoo!*. YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

LILY LILY is a moodle and just turned 1. She likes the finer things in life, spending most of her time at the Lane Cove Pottery Green, the butchers and the ice cream shop.
