Building a past

WHEN you look at the now disused Glebe Island Bridge, dwarfed by the ANZAC Bridge that rendered it obsolete, you get a feel for how much this area has changed. It’s almost impossible to imagine that the quaint, four-lane, swing-span bridge once handled all the traffic crossing between the city and inner west, especially when the eight-lane suspension bridge towering over it is frequently clogged with crawling vehicles.

Old and new side by side; this is the character of Glebe. Remnants of the industry that once thrived here remain, preserved as artefacts or repurposed for modern living.

Glebe is about lifestyle. Its many cafes give it a relaxed, cosmopolitan ambience, while the handful of iconic antique shops and second-hand book and clothing stores speak to the population of students, artists, and unique individuals.

In this, our first issue of 2037, we review Glebe’s timeline via a number of significant historic buildings. We help you get around on your bike or spin around on your skateboard. We pay homage to some ground level workers who just kept going - and kept us going - during lockdown. Restaurants, wild animals, fish, yoga and so much more. a lh

Bidura House, Glebe

Glebe has a fascinating development history. Among its leafy streets and along the harbour foreshore are buildings that tell stories of the past; mansions built by wealthy residents, and remnants of early industry.

Glebe is so called because it is a ‘glebe’ – a Medieval French word for an area of land tied to a church to support the priest. In Glebe’s case the land was a grant given in 1790 by Governor Arthur Philip to Reverend Richard Johnson, Chaplain of the First Fleet.

The land remained undeveloped until 1828, and was, until then, an important confluence shared between the Gomorrigal and Wangal peoples. The region was dominated by black wattle forest, used for furniture and house building, and several creeks that fed into a swampy tidal inlet – later renamed Blackwattle Bay. In 1828 the Church of England subdivided the area into 28 allotments, retaining three for church use as the Glebe Estate, around Glebe Street, where many Victorian terrace houses have been preserved.

BIDURA, 357 GLEBE POINT ROAD In 1858 architect Edmund Blackett, best known for his designs for Sydney University and St Andrews Cathedral, built his family home, Bidura, at 357 Glebe Point Road. The creamcoloured three-storey Victorian Regency-style homestead features rectangular green window shutters and a striped two-toned corrugated iron shade over the front porch.

Between 1920-1977 it was integral to the NSW Govt’s child welfare system, as the primary holding centre for girls up to 18 years of age, and boys up to six, who moved between government institutions and foster care. This included the children of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

who were forcibly taken from their families by government agencies and church missions to be re-homed.

BIDURA CHILDREN’S COURT, 357 GLEBE POINT ROAD Built behind heritage-listed Bidura House, the large courthouse complex was inspired by neo-Brutalist architecture (think of Soviet-style square concrete blocks) and opened in 1983, replacing the Children’s Court in Surry Hills.

In 2014 NSW Govt announced the site had been sold for housing development and was facing demolition. However, the still-empty premises has become a cause-célèbre for lovers of Brutalist architecture. Campaigners want it protected, like the recently-saved Sirius Apartments in The Rocks, because both are among the few surviving examples in Sydney.

In May 2019, the City of Sydney lost its bid to save the building and developers are progressing with plans for an apartment complex.

VALHALLA CINEMA, 166 GLEBE POINT ROAD Always independently-operated, the original Art Decodesigned Astor Cinema opened in 1937 with a 992 seating capacity - 722 downstairs in stalls and 270 in the upper circle tier. Closed in November 1959 due to the impact of television, and converted to theatre storage, the cinema reopened in 1968 and thereafter relaunched a few times under new management and names, whilst also doubling as a live theatre venue.

Bidura Childrens Court, Glebe

In December 1979 it began its long run as the Valhalla, known for revival and art house films. However, the opening of a 10-screen Hoyts multiplex nearby on Broadway in November 1998 contributed to its demise. Valhalla Cinema closed 31 January 1999, and although a few attempts were made to relaunch the venue, it was no longer financially viable.

On 3 August 2005 it finally closed its doors to cinema-goers.

National Trust was approached to heritage-list the building but it was too late - the interior was gutted back to bare brick in 2007 and converted into private apartments.

BURLEY GRIFFIN INCINERATOR, 53 FORSYTH ST, GLEBE Walter Burley Griffin, the talented American architect who won the competition to design Australia’s capital, Canberra, was also involved in multiple other architectural projects around Australia.

Between 1930-38, Burley Griffin was responsible for designing 12 incinerators, of which seven still survive - two in NSW: Willoughby (now an art gallery) and the Glebe incinerator on the shore of Blackwattle Bay. The Pyrmont incinerator, inspired by ancient Mayan architecture and modern Cubist forms, and Glebe incinerator were essential in managing the tonnes of garbage piling up in rat-infested 1930s Sydney, much of which was dumped at sea. Both closed in 1971. The Pyrmont incinerator was left to the elements and demolished in 1992.

LYNDHURST, 61 DARGHAN ST, GLEBE Built between 1834 and 1837 for Dr James Bowman, Sydney Hospital’s principal surgeon, the Regency-styled Lyndhurst was designed by architect John Verge. It later served as St Mary’s College Roman Catholic School, then Lyndhurst Private School, during which time it was altered, extended and subdivided.

utilised as a broom manufacturer, soap factory, ice cream shop and joinery before reverting to private ownership. Plans to demolish it for a freeway in 1972 galvanised public support, and Lyndhurst was saved by a Builders Labourers Federation green ban and followed by restoration. In 1983 the building was transferred to the Historic Houses Trust of NSW. ROZELLE TRAM SHEDS, FOREST LODGE Opened in 1904, Rozelle Tram Depot was a tram terminus and reparations centre that was part of the Sydney Tram Network. In 1918 the depot was expanded to accommodate 200 trams. The depot ceased operations on 22 November 1958 upon closure of the Glebe line, and was cleared of all trams the following day with the surrounding tram lines ripped up to facilitate vehicular traffic.

The sheds stored historic trams and buses, however, from 2000 the trams were repeatedly graffitied and looted. The last vandalised tram was removed in 2015. Proposals to demolish the historic tram depot for apartments were rebuffed by public opposition. On 22 September 2016 the site was reopened as Tramsheds, a European-style food hall. One of the original trams was restored and now features in the complex.

FEATURE WORKING FOR US ALL, ESSENTIALLY

Glebe has always had a strong community spirit, but last year it proved it had local heroes.

Glebe-based social documentary photographer, Ruth Goodwin, spoke to essential workers during the lockdown in April and May.

I

IN THE midst of a pandemic and lockdown that no one saw coming, many Sydneysiders were able to transition to working from the safety of their own homes.

However, this was not possible for all, and a number of workers consistently showed up to keep essential services running smoothly: bus drivers, those emptying our bins each week, childcare workers looking after the children of medical professionals, local pharmacists, and the Australia Post workers delivering increasing numbers of packages as online purchases spiked.

We pay tribute to these workers, who often humbly flew under the radar and continued to put themselves on the frontline, all with a friendly smile and good spirits that are the hallmark of the Glebe community.

STEVE - GALLUZZO FRUITERERS Galluzzo Fruiterers can be found on the corner of Glebe Point Road and St John’s Road and has been supplying locals with their five-a-day since 1934. It is impossible to spend much time in Glebe without sampling their wonderful fruit and vegetables, or popping into their deli for quality meats, cheeses and other gourmet goods.

When coronavirus local transmission was increasing in April, Galluzzo’s was quick to adapt by offering all customers disposable gloves for shopping and strictly overseeing the number allowed to enter the store at a time. This regularly led to a socially distanced line of residents waiting patiently to stock up on essential groceries. Damian, the manager, reported that business increased a lot this year, with more people cooking at home, choosing to avoid the bigger shopping centres and buying local.

Making this possible was the Galluzzo’s team, including Steve (pictured). Steve represents many essential workers who continued to work, out of both necessity and the passion of serving their community, despite the personal risk associated with interacting with so many people. Steve had suffered from a cardiac arrest in the months before we spoke to him, but, accepting that every job has its risks, was willing to adapt his working hours, take the necessary precautions, and get on with it.

NEIL, TAXI DRIVER Neil drove his first taxi in 1977, and during the lockdown this

year he could often be found sitting in a quiet Glebe street, reading his book and waiting for his onboard computer to come to life with a request for a nearby booking.

With only approximately 5% of the taxi fleet on the road during the height of lockdown, Neil was one of the few drivers available to take Glebe residents safely to their required destination. He often took elderly locals and those unable to travel by public transport to their medical appointments at the nearby RPA hospital.

Neil chuckles as he describes the change in driving conditions he experienced with the decreased traffic resulting from restricted travel across Sydney. From the challenge of navigating around once-full buses, crawling along to stick to schedules designed for busier times, to cement trucks taking advantage of the clear roads and zooming around to ensure construction continued across the city.

Making less than a third of his regular income from driving, Neil was determined to stay out on the road and keep this essential service running when locals needed it more than ever. He thanks his superhuman immune system, developed from years of driving, with the confidence that enabled him to continue without fear of the virus.

With his calm presence, there is no doubt that travelling with Neil this year was and continues to be a delight for all his passengers. And, for anyone looking for a great summer read, Neil recommends any book by Chilean writer Roberto Ballenio.

JUAN - FOOD DELIVERY DRIVER Juan (pictured here on Glebe Point Road), was one of those local food deliverers who became a God-send during lockdown, when many of us realised our home cooking skills really needed improvement!

Juan moved to Sydney from Medellín, Colombia, during 2019 and was just one of the many temporary visa holders who were unable to benefit from government support payments and had no choice but to find ways to support themselves as a number of job opportunities vanished suddenly.

Juan, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Commerce, increased his hours to deliver orders full time and found that the number of delivery drivers increased substantially and became a much more diverse group. Thankfully he was able to earn enough money to pay his bills and to “more than survive” during this time period, with the help of the occasional beer or two.

The ability for local establishments to stay open for take away and delivery orders during lockdown was an economic lifeline to restaurant owners, employees and delivery drivers alike, and due in part to the many drivers and riders who consistently showed up to service deliveries.

Locals sipping a take-away lockdown cocktail, served street-side, could take a moment to appreciate the incredible local cuisine options that are found in Glebe, and to marvel at the adaptability of our entrepreneurs.

COMMUNITY We get to know State Member for Balmain, Jamie Parker MP - his background, his views, and how he deals with the big picture issues in his electorate.

O

ON COVID-19 These have been such challenging times for everyone in our community. But rather than divide us, this pandemic has shown just how strong the connections in our community are.

Locally, organisations including Glebe Youth Service, the Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre, and Vinnies have stepped up all their food assistance and outreach programs. I’ve been working with local business to build ‘shop local’ campaigns and support small business.

I’ve also heard really heart-warming stories of neighbours popping notes in each other’s letterboxes offering support.

On climate change When I speak to people in our community, climate change is consistently the top issue they are worried about. It’s hard not to feel frustrated when governments just plainly refuse to engage with this crisis.

Notwithstanding the lack of federal action, our community has been incredibly successful lobbying for local solutions to climate change with clean, green public transport improvements at the top of the list.

Through huge community petitions collating over 6,000 signatures, hundreds of letters, and plenty of meetings we have won 30 new electric buses for the inner west, four new trams to service the inner west light rail, and secured over $100,000 to install solar panels in seven local public schools.

I’m also really proud that government agreed to a proposal I moved in the Parliament to secure $50 million for green hydrogen in NSW, which is a new ground breaking renewable technology. This is the first investment of its kind in NSW and will hopefully have a huge impact on power generation in this state over the next decade.

On green space COVID has shown us just how important open green space is for our city. Our community has a really remarkable history of reclaiming spaces

for public use including large waterfront sites like Ballast Point Park in Balmain and Bicentennial Park in Glebe.

The Balmain depot site, which sits just behind Balmain Town Hall is owned by the Council who proposed earlier this year to sell it off. We’re saying that if there is publicly owned land that isn’t needed, it should be dedicated to public use not flogged off to developers.

On planning and heritage The White Bay Power Station could be Sydney’s answer to the Tate Modern art complex in London - but this government wants to flatten it instead.

Every other global city is embarking on projects of visionary urban transformation for heritage waterfront sites like White Bay. This site is on publicly-owned prime waterfront land, minutes from the CBD and holds huge potential for adaptive reuse.

I’m pushing for the government to develop an innovative use for this site that prioritises public access to the waterfront and greenspace, not a forest of apartments that will lock up the foreshore forever.

Everyone in Glebe should be aware of the proposal to build a massive shopping and residential development right on the waterfront at the former site of the Sydney Fish Markets on Blackwattle Bay. The government is trying to off-set the cost of the Fish Market redevelopment, which has now ballooned to $750m. The result is a proposal to build 45 storey towers containing up to 1,700 apartments right on the foreshore with no plan for supporting infrastructure like new schools or parks.

On his personal life My father fixed engines on British merchant ships and sailed into Sydney Harbour when he was 23. He never left and got his first job in Australia in the Balmain shipyards as a fitter and turner. He repaired engines his whole working life.

My mother emigrated from Liverpool in England with her family when she was 16. Her father was a dock worker and my parents met in Sydney and settled in the inner west. I was first elected to Leichhardt Council in 1999 and served 12 years on Council including three years as Mayor. I was the first ever Green MP elected to the NSW Lower House to represent the Electorate of Balmain in 2011.

On Glebe I love the diversity in Glebe. There are people from all walks of life living together in this local area and it’s one of the main reasons I have my Electorate Office in this suburb.

WELLNESS Bryan Hayhow is a volunteer with Australian School of Meditation and Yoga and believes this ancient practice can do much to encourage a healthier community.

T

THE Australian School of Meditation and Yoga (ASMY) is a nonprofit organisation that shares principles and techniques of meditation, yoga, and kirtan at no or very low cost to participants.

With branches throughout Australia as well as an abundant offering online, it’s services are easily accessible and generous.

Bryan Hayhow has lived in Glebe for 15 years and been part of the ASMY studio in Chippendale for the last seven years.

He is very supportive of the local community, using his skill and knowledge and the resources available through ASMY to encourage wellbeing and peace.

“Our involvement with the studio is our main contribution, as we are a non profit organisation that offers yoga & meditation tuition for the benefit of the community,” he explains.

“We also run associated Wellness workshops and teach Vedic philosophy in local schools such as Fort Street High (and across the Sydney basin). Our aim is to create the opportunity for residents to develop a more balanced and holistic lifestyle, catering for all of their physical, mental and spiritual needs.”

THE bike riding infrastructure in this city continues to evolve as more and more people are opting to cycle for leisure and transport.

IT’S not quite on par with other world cities that have a long established cycling culture, but Sydney is definitely heading in the right direction. New cycle paths and dedicated lanes are being proposed and built each month, and cycling is now recognised as a legitimate transport option.

The City of Sydney has been proactive in providing new bike routes along with detailed printed maps and loads of online info.

After COVID hit, it was noted that more people were choosing to ride bikes to work, uni and other destinations, rather than catch public transport, so the City moved to install a number of “pop-up cycleways”. These are lengths of road with sections reclaimed as bike lanes. They have been painted the standard green, marked with direction arrows, and are flanked by flexible posts and barriers.

These pop-up cycleways are meant to be temporary and are designed to provide a safe, fast, alternative route to busy roads.

There are six new pop-up paths around the city, each linking popular routes. One of these is in Glebe. It begins at the corner

of Lyons Rd and Pyrmont Bridge Rd and travels along Bridge Rd, around Wentworth Park, finishing at Wattle St. (Roughly 1.9km).

This route is intended for speed. If you prefer a cruisey scenic ride, then you should take the shared path along the Blackwattle Bay, Glebe Point, Johnston’s Creek foreshore. It is wide and flat and takes you through beautifully landscaped parklands and beside the historic, once very industrious bay.

Various sections of the park and Johnston’s Creek are undergoing renovation, so there may be some disruption but nothing that won’t make the ride worth it.

For a long time Dan Hennessy didn’t believe in the benefits of yoga - now he teaches it at Balance Yoga Glebe studio. He shares his experience with us.

WHAT was your initial experience of yoga, and what kept you coming back?

To be honest, I was resistant to yoga at first. During my 20s and early 30s a number of friends had suggested I try yoga. Like many people I baulked at the unknown and first I failed to identify the benefits. However, once I tried yoga, it had an immediate positive reaction physically. The more I did, the better I felt physically and soon I also began to notice the meditational qualities of yoga positively impacting my mental health. I always wished I’d listened to those friends and started years earlier.

What were you doing (professionally) prior to getting involved with yoga?

For over 35 years I was involved in the music industry. I was an Artist Manager, Tour Manager, Promoter, Publisher, Record Label Exec and more during that time. The travel gave me the opportunity to seek out yoga spaces in different cities and countries.

Yoga helped me keep a check on myself during some of those heady times.

This year, many people have been sedentary or working in less than ideal home set ups. How can yoga help with some of the aches and tension?

The benefits of yoga are immense. We are social creatures and the attendance at regular classes give reason to get out of the house and interact with others in similar situations. But even as we were in lockdown, the simple activity of yoga stimulates the body and mind. Many aches and tension are a result of a highly active or busy mind. Yoga by definition seeks to quieten a busy and overstimulated mind, bringing us into a state of calm.

Additionally, the sequence of yoga poses and stretches, in combination with a deliberate focus on the breath, stimulates the nervous, vascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems. Yoga releases tension and opens tight areas such as the chest and shoulders. It builds core, upper and lower body strength. Yoga is particularly good at addressing misalignment as a result of long periods in front of screens.

What have you got in place to deal with COVID-safe re-

quirements? e.g. online classes COVID has opened up a new world of livestream online yoga, allowing a new cohort of students to experience the benefit of yoga. For those who wish not to or cannot attend in person, we Live Stream (Zoom) almost every class on the timetable. That’s around 25 classes per week and includes Open (general classes) Yin Yoga, Beginners Yoga, Women’s Yoga and Restorative Yoga.

Additionally we are fully compliant with Government regulations including the adherence to QR code check in and the four square metre rule. Sanitiser and wipes are available to sterilise your hands and equipment before and after class. We have paused the practice of chanting and for the time being the teachers remain static on their mats, thus maintaining a respectful 1.5m from the participants.

What do you like about working in Glebe?

I’ve always liked the variety of people living and working in Glebe. It has a wonderful village and all-inclusive feel about it.

Our Glebe studio community is strong and inclusive and caters all experience levels, regardless of age, gender or ability. I have a deep affection for Glebe itself with wonderful memories of nights attending the Valhalla Art House Cinema and late night coffees.

How do you spend your spare time?

Usually if I a have a day off I try and spend it with my young daughter or perhaps take a drive in my vintage car. The demands of 2020 have been massive and as a teacher and studio manager my own practice has suffered a little. 2021’s top goal is to once again commit myself to my own practice and share the benefits of yoga with others.

The new skatepark in Federal Park is finally near completion, and local board riders can’t wait.

FEDERAL Park Reserve butts against the harbour at the end of Rozelle Bay and at the bottom of Glebe. It’s a very scenic park to walk through and also includes lots of amenities, such as a dog park, children’s playground, sports fields, walking/cycling path and, any minute now, a big new skatepark.

Located at the foot of the viaduct that now serves the light rail, the skatepark incorporates the historic arches into its design.

The concrete and brick-paved plaza covers a fairly large area and includes ramps, basins, slopes, platforms and rails, as well as being impressively landscaped.

It came about thanks to lobbying led by Sydney Skateboard Association, locals, and skateboarders and is part of a wider redevelopment project in Federal Park which includes: new recreational open space, west of the Glebe railway viaduct a new, larger playground shared paths for people walking and riding bikes throughout the park groves of native trees and large lawn areas picnic areas with seating and barbecues conservation works to the Glebe railway viaduct.

In conjunction with the park renovations, Sydney Water is conducting naturalisation work on Johnstons Creek which will return it to a more organic waterway. The work includes: replacing the old concrete banks with sandstone and native plants creating a natural planted stormwater system (wetland) in Federal Park near Dalgal Way expanding the salt marsh around the creek and creating intertidal rock pools creating a boardwalk, paths and new seating replacing the old footbridge near Dalgal way.

Works are expected to be completed early in 2021.

THE Glebe-Leichhardt Police Citizens Youth Club is one of the longest serving in Sydney. It first opened its doors in 1943, in a modest building near the water in Jubilee Park. A fire reduced the building to charcoal in the early 1960s and the PCYC was relocated to a new building in Minogue Crescent, which has remained its home to today.

PCYC is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to energise and empower young people by teaching them physical discipline and keeping them active. The Glebe-Leichhardt club offers a diverse range of programs for people of all levels of fitness and ability. Recently, the club opened its totally revamped, state-ofthe-art gymnastics centre and now offers a whole host of activities using premium facilities and equipment.

They have instructors with the patience for young beginners and the expertise to take gymnasts through to competitive level.

For kids with so much energy they’re bouncing off the walls, why not let them bounce off walls in a controlled, safe, but exciting environment with Free G (aka Parkour).

Some kids would rather watch from the sidelines, but that doesn’t mean they have to stand still. Cheerleading is becoming very popular in this country, and there’s a lot more skill and finesse to it than just waving pom poms around.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR? WHILE many of us are still deep in the slumber of school holidays, the clock is ticking away and preparations for the new school year have already begun.

Certainly, the biggest change in place will be our reliance on technology and the internet, which is ever increasing. If this is not something you’re comfortable with it may be time to join a community college or find a way to learn more so you can support your children.

The education.nsw.gov.au website has a number of useful resources, and you can check with local community colleges and institutions for short beginner courses in common technology. It may also be worth checking with your school to see if they have an introductory course to get you up to speed. If they don’t, it might be worth suggesting.

Social media apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook have also become popular as parents seek ways to keep up to date with the daily changes. You can download either of these onto your smartphone and if you don’t already have a social profile, get the kids to help you make one as they are already proficient in this space.

Once online, find out what groups are available, such as front office, class or year groups, and join the conversation.

One online sensation that you may have heard of is Zoom.

This meeting and webinar app, originally designed for business, has also become the go-to tool for teachers.

For parents, Zoom can be a minefield with its multiple screens, mute buttons and chat functions, but the goods news is it’s free to download the meeting version, so you can get some practice in before the big day. The bad news is it’s also available on mobile, so getting out of meetings is no longer an option, even if you are sitting in your car or still in your PJ’s.

There are also organisations, such as UNICEF, who have developed a series of online video diaries featuring kids around the world and how they are dealing with life during COVID-19. It’s a fun way for kids to relate to change, by observing how others are coping.

So before you pack the kids up ready for a new semester, its best to check with your school if there are any changes likely to take place. This will help you avoid last-minute surprises when you are running late for work!

Finally, always remember your kids are more resilient than you may think, so be confident and they will follow your lead.

During colonial times in America’s south, the pineapple - which was not a native fruit - was considered exotic and exclusive. The idea of sharing such a rare prize whenever a sailor brought one home speaks to the notion of Southern hospitality.

THE CHARLESTON restaurant in Glebe recreates the ambience of coastal South Carolina with its pastel hued interior, cane furniture, and simple, charming style. Hanging above the entrance is a bright neon pineapple, an iconic symbol in the South Carolina port city of Charleston. It represents generosity and hospitality. If a pineapple is displayed outside a home, it means a good meal and conversation can be had within.

Chris Morrison and Jordan Kain took ownership of the restaurant in July 2020, injecting it with new energy. Their head chef, Patrick Ngai, has created a menu based on an ethos of bringing people together and sharing good food and good times. The dishes range across snacks, share plates and meals and are all infused with the eclectic spices and flavours of America’s coastal south. Try the sticky pork ribs or salt and pepper squid tacos.

This unassuming restaurant might prefer to remain humble, but patrons keep singing its praises.

GLEBE POINT DINER is literally the last restaurant on Glebe Point Road before you hit the bay; if you find yourself surrounded by water, you’ve missed it. The restaurant was opened in 2007 and locals tried to keep it a secret, but when the food is this good, word gets out.

The vintage styled logo and pared back elements in its interior - basic tables and chairs, tiled floors, slick lines - give it the sense of a classic diner. However, the decor also features lime-coloured retro stools, large crinkle-pleated lamp shades overhead, stripes on the table clothes, circles on the walls, mood lighting - all amounting to an understated elegance.

The street-side wall is fully glass, with slide back doors that allow it to be opened up almost completely. A narrow terrace hosts a handful of outside tables with cushioned cane lounge chairs for relaxed al fresco dining and people watching.

Inside, to the left of the dining area is a small counter that provides spectator viewing to the open kitchen while you enjoy a coffee or wine.

It’s all part of the experience, but decor isn’t what brought you here; you want to sample the Anglo-Euorpean-Aussie infused fare that has received folkloric reviews.

The menu is beholden to seasonal produce and, as such, YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

changes frequently, which is why it is usually written on a blackboard. It’s not the kind of place you come to for a light meal, or if you’re vegetarian, alas. They offer a 3-course a la carte dinner for $75pp. The food is hearty with strongly stated flavours: Yellowfin Tuna crudo with finger lime, horseradish and grapefruit dressing (entree); Rangers Valley Wagyu rump with agrodolce salsa, mustard butter and fried onion (main); Chocolate mousse with salted butterscotch, chantilly and almond praline is just one example of a combo from the current menu.

They have also created something of an haute cuisine takeaway menu which currently includes whole roast Nichols chook 1.6kg with their signature bread sauce and brussels sprouts,( requires 24 hours notice) among other delicious and indulgent menu items. Perfect for those live-streamed theatre shows. Or the footy. Whatever.

Bring a small esky or insulated bag with you with some freezer blocks. Get the vendor to also put some ice in the bag with your purchase. Make seafood the last thing you buy when shopping and get it home as soon as possible.

AUSTRALIA is one big island blessed with beautiful natural wonders and unique creatures, from the red centre right into the deep, blue pristine ocean. With plenty of coastline from which to cast a line or launch a boat we have always been able to rely on the sea for nourishment. Very few of us, of course, actually catch our own food and that means we have to be vigilant about what we buy. Thankfully, all we need is a bit of knowledge and our five senses.

HOW TO BUY SEAFOOD

If it smells fishy, throw it back It may sound counter-intuitive, but you actually DON’T want your seafood to have a strong, fishy smell - that’s usually an indication that it’s a bit over-ripe. Have a good sniff. All seafood has a subtle, pleasant ocean scent when it’s fresh.

GO FOR LOOKS

Whole seafood should look pretty much the same under a glass counter as it did when it was in the water with no discolouration, blotches or bruising. The skin, scales, shell, fins, claws and other bits should be lustrous and vividly coloured. Gills should be bright pinkish red and eyes shiny, clear and bulging.

If you are buying the creature whole, it should be completely intact with no visible breakages, missing limbs or scales and no deformities.

If you are buying fillets, cutlets, peeled etc, the flesh should still have good colour with no blemishes or gaping.

IT SHOULDN’T LEAVE AN IMPRESSION

Whether fish is whole or scaled/filleted, it should always feel firm and pliant. Your finger shouldn’t leave a dent - that’s not the impression you want. You also don’t want brittle or soft outer

HOW TO KEEP THINGS FRESH

Seafood needs to be kept cold until cooked or consumed.

Most seafood can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days, however, dead crustaceans (e.g. prawns), live crustaceans (e.g. crabs), live molluscs (e.g. mussels) should be consumed as soon as possible. Just before cooking or eating, do the freshness tests described above. Any open-shelled molluscs that don’t respond to tapping should be discarded.

Clean, scale and gut fish, and clean and rinse squid, cuttlefish and octopus before storing in fridge or freezer.

Most seafood can be frozen for up to 3 months. Non-oily fish can be frozen for up to 6 months. Be aware that frozen seafood needs to be kept at -18ºC or lower. A lot of home freezers can’t get that low.

Check the specs for your appliance before loading up.

TERIYAKI SILVER TREVALLY WITH SESAME & ZUCCHINI

THERE are good commercial teriyaki sauces and marinades available, or you can make your own by combining equal quantities of light soy sauce and mirin. The name comes from the Japanese words “teri” meaning shine and “yaki” meaning grill, as meat and fish are brushed with the marinade while being grilled to give a shiny coating.

YOU WILL NEED:

¼ cup teriyaki sauce 2cm piece ginger, finely grated 1 large clove garlic, crushed 1½ teaspoons white sugar 1½ teaspoons sesame oil 2 teaspoons sesame seeds, toasted (see notes)

4 x 180g Silver Trevally fillets, skin off, bones removed 3 zucchini 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 3 green onions, thinly sliced diagonally Steamed rice, to serve

METHOD:

Combine the teriyaki sauce, ginger, garlic, sugar, sesame oil and sesame seeds in a bowl. Add the fish, cover and marinate for 1020 minutes.

Trim the ends off the zucchini and quarter lengthways. Heat a nonstick frying pan over a high heat and add the oil. Add the zucchini and cook for about 2 minutes, until they begin to colour. Remove to a warm plate.

Remove fillets from marinade, reserving marinade.

Return the pan to the heat, add the Trevally fillets and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the edges have turned opaque. Turn the fillets, add the zucchini and the reserved marinade and cook for a further 1-2 minutes, adding a few teaspoons of water if the marinade begins to caramelise.

Arrange the zucchini on plates, top with fillets and garnish with green onion. Serve with steamed rice.

NOTES

Toast sesame seeds in a dry frying pan for a couple of minutes, tossing gently to prevent them burning, or under a griller (but watch them closely).

BUDDY AND WICKIE

MARIO AND MAX

BUDDY AND WICKIE are a pair of cockatiels who live happily with their humans, Leo and Will.

They came into the household at different times, so there were a few teething (beaking?) problems, but they are flocking together like birds of a feather now.

There’s lots to keep these two spoilt cockies happy, with toys and climbing things and human heads to play on.

Recently, for whatever reason, Will decided to take Buddy into the shower with him. Cockatiels and showers are sworn enemies. It was a bad feather day for Buddy but that’s just part of living with humans.

Most of the time, they are two very happy birds who make their humans happy too.

THESE two orange colour-schemed cats live with their human, Lou, down on the foreshore of Blackwattle Bay. Their apartment has a wide, flora-filled balcony at the front, and a neat, grassy backyard, both with climbable walls and fences that allow for the occasional adventurous roam.

Mario is a short-haired ginger with a big appetite. He is ALWAYS hungry and it shows in his girth. At meal time, he gorges down his food in two gulps then wanders over to Max’s bowl and helps himself to seconds - while Max is still eating. Mario is very affectionate and placid and happily welcomes guests into the home.

Max is a white and ginger fluffy prince - possibly Norwegian Forest breed. He mostly likes to sleep and is a bit more stand-offish than Mario, but he’ll accept a pat and a cuddle if the mood is right.

GLEBE MARKETS has been the epicentre of life - at least on Saturdays - for locals and visitors since 1992. When it was forced to close for 6 months last year, stallholders, regular attendees, and residents were all deeply impacted. In September 2020, the markets reopened a COVID-safe revamp.

Gone are the narrow, people-packed paths pumping through the markets like capillaries. The aisles are now wide enough to allow appropriate distancing and an easy flow of traffic. There is constant, rigorous cleaning, and patrons are encouraged to sanitise hands frequently.

You might need to be a little less-touchy feely than you’re used to but all you favourite stalls are still there. If you’re planning on having a meal and/or a drink (and you definitely are because the food selection is amazing!) you’ll need to order online and pay by card.

THE pandemic may have knocked it down but community spirit raised it back up.

HYUNDAI have an impressive range of EVs on their books, but the IONIQ is one of the most “normal” on the market, looking, as it does, a bit like your mum’s hatchback. This is a very clever car though, with a host of driver aids (an awesome ‘Jetsons’ “turbine” sound being the least useful perhaps) making it very good value for money. The range is a fantastic and useable 370-ish kms and the fast charge to 80% in a scant 25 minutes - just long enough for a coffee while it charges - is excellent.

PROS; Looks normal, practical, price, standard features, range.

CONS; Looks a bit normal, a bit cheap feeling inside.

TESLA is synonymous with EV motoring, however their approach is worlds apart from other manufacturers. The 3 is brutally fast (‘Ludicrous Mode’ anyone?), can drive itself (where legal) and has options of delighfully dubious practicality such as a virtual log fire and whoopee cushion function.

That it is also a stylish, practical car you can fit all your friends in, with a usable range and the best charging infrastructure in the world also makes it the EV everyone wants.

PROS; Tech-fest, very, very fast, practical, ease of charging.

CONS; “Iffy” build quality, expensive, absolutely everywhere.

MINI is known for producing fun, fast and relatively affordable cars and the MINI e hasn’t changed that formula one iota. To drive, an EV MINI is virtually the same as driving its petrol cousins; fantastic interior, great attention to detail, roomy for two, a bit of a squeeze for more than that, zippy and stylish. The only difference being the electric drivetrain.

Sure, the range is a bit rubbish and no MINI can be described as “practical”, but you’ll be having too much fun to care.

PROS; Fun, small, zippy, build quality.
