And it’s not just the beaches and parks that make Dee Why special. It’s community spirit is strong and something that became even more evident in tough times during 2020, when local businesses in and around Dee Why took action to support each other.

Despite the inexplicable origins of its name, Dee Why has an interesting history, and for many years was owned by a single family, followed by the Salvation Army.

Stolen by a group of fleeing convicts in July 1817, it was steered onto a beach in Port Stephens where the escapees were likely killed by Aborigines. After recovery, in March 1824 it capsized in Sydney Harbour and three crew drowned; then in Feb 1825 it struck a reef near South Head in Sydney Harbour and was wrecked).

By the early 19th century most of the land around Dee Why Lagoon and north to Mona Vale was owned by the Jenkins family, purchased by convicted sheep stealer and grazier, James Jenkins.

To facilitate transporting equipment and stock back and forth between his properties and the main settlement in Sydney Cove, Jenkins constructed a road from Collaroy to the water’s edge at North Harbour (Fairlight) where he also built a stone cottage. This became the main road through the Northern Beaches peninsula and required 13 bridges to cross streams and lagoons.

When Jenkins died in 1835, his descendants, including 20 grandchildren, were locked in legal battles until 1880, quarrelling over distribution of the estate.

His daughter Elizabeth was very religious, and in 1885 gave the Salvation Army 12 hectares of land around Narrabeen Lagoon, followed by another 81 hectares in Dee Why – eventually transferring her entire 700 ha estate to them in return for an annuity and support in old age.

After her death in 1900, the Salvation Army retained control of the land, upon which they managed an industrial farm and hostels for boys, girls and women.

The Salvos also fenced-off Dee Why Beach to the public with wire netting running its entire length, although the NSW Govt issued a legal challenge to them over their claimed ownership of Dee Why Lagoon.

In 1911 the Salvos began subdividing and selling their estates, and the area opened up to settlers, with Dee Why expanding from five dwellings to 125 in four years (albeit most of them holiday homes). Dee Why Public School opened in 1922 for the children of new residents, and when the Spit and Roseville Bridges were opened in 1924, settlement of the peninsula accelerated.

A copper mine was active at Long Reef from the 1880s to the 1930s, accessed by a 30 metre shaft tunnelled in from the southern side of the cliff face at the north end of the beach (now concreted over).

Meanwhile, the coastal shipping route from Sydney Harbour to Broken Bay and north to Newcastle developed as boatmen ferried goods to the Hawkesbury River settlements and ships transported coal and timber.

However, despite the prominent headland jutting out at Long Reef, no lighthouse was ever constructed, leading to the loss of numerous vessels and lives as they careened into the rocks in storms and fog.

In 1881, the paddle-steamer SS Collaroy ran aground in dense mist on the then-unnamed beach to the north of Long Reef. Collaroy remained stranded on the sand for nearly four years until it was repaired and recommissioned. The suburb and beach were subsequently named after this wayward ship.

Several old tug boats and ferries have since been scuttled offshore from Dee Why and the Long Reef headland to provide artificial reefs, including the aptly-named Dee Why ferry.

In service between Manly and Circular Quay from Xmas Day 1928 to 7 July 1968, Dee Why was deliberately sunk on 25 August 1976 at a point two-and-a-half nautical miles offshore. It’s now a popular subaqueous spot for adventurous Scuba divers.

REIGN ON THE BEACHES MICHAEL REGAN, NORTHERN BEACHES MAYOR Michael Regan is the popular mayor for Northern Beaches Council.

An independent, he represents Your Northern Beaches Independent Team, who hold six of the 15 seats on the council.

Prior to that, Regan served as mayor of the award-winning Warringah Council from Sept 2008 to May 2016, when the council was dissolved and merged into the amalgamated entity that now serves the entire Northern Beaches.

2099 magazine reached out to Mayor Regan to talk about his long reign and plans for the future.

How has management of the Northern Beaches district progressed since the 2017 amalgamations brought together Warringah, Pittwater and Manly?

We strive to exceed expectations in what is a very highly regulated environment that very few people actually understand, let alone appreciate. I want us to be an employer of choice and be the world’s best of any organisation.

With coastal erosion a major threat to waterfront communities - how are Northern Beaches Council dealing with future erosion?

“Essentially, it is very complex,” Regan considers. “The waterways are State Govt assets. Council has the beach (sand), and then there is a mix of public and private assets like roads and houses. But the sand returns to Collaroy and other places over time.

“Along Collaroy, groups of houses are getting together to build a seawall. It requires groups of them to build at once together.

Otherwise if there are gaps, it just undermines the walls and makes things significantly worse. Council will contribute 10% to the cost of the wall and the State will contribute 10%. The rest will be paid for by the owners.

“Future erosion is an issue that requires all levels of government to address. Sea levels rising, along with more frequent and severe storms, is (and will) continue to impact our coastline, and big expensive decisions will be forced sooner rather than later…

We all have a role to play.”

Talk us through some of the major works programs in progress across the Northern Beaches region and the their benefits?

“Obviously building and connecting the missing links of the Manly to Palm Beach Walk will be a great world-class asset for generations to come – especially with Sculptures By The Sea being added,” Regan replies. “In Dee Why, the town centre has had some interesting improvements with more to come...

“Brookvale Vision and Structure Plan sound boring, but promise a long-term vision to help employment stay local, and hopefully create significant affordable housing.

“The new Dee Why to Chatswood Turn-Up-And-Go bus service will eventually rival the B1, and when the Harbour Tunnel is complete, will give us new direct connections to North Sydney and St Leonards.

“My favourites: one is micro-factories that take our soft plastics and turn them into 3D filament or clothes, and convert hard plastics into products like tables and/or tiles. And the one that I can’t really talk about yet will help reshape our nation and heal our

relationships with Aboriginal people. That is very special…

What’s Mayor Regan’s favourite beach on the Northern Beaches, and does he undertake other water activities, such as boating, surfing, kayaking?

“I have always loved hanging at Dee Why Beach and taking my kids (now teens) there,” Regan reveals. “Everything you need is there, including the food outlets across the road. But the big grass area is such a bonus. The events we have down there on a regular basis, the playgrounds and the pool, it’s just such a versatile beach. Something for everyone all the time.

Do you have a favourite restaurant or retail trader in Dee Why that you would recommend?

“Livoti’s Italian deli and restaurant (on Francis St) hands down is a must!” Regan declares. “I also love the little Oaks Avenue Patisserie for coffee and cakes. Honestly though, there are so many gems in Dee Why, as anyone who lives here knows, but those two are right at the top.

“Also: Oliver’s Twist Espresso (on Howard Ave); my hairdresser, LM Hair (2 doors up); Mary’s café next door; Wings and Tins; the Dodgy Indian restaurant - want me to stop?!

“More restaurants: Olive and Peel; The Thai and I; Stella Blu; Jah Bar: and a whole heap I have not tried yet. Dee Why honestly does not disappoint, and there is more to come. Even the RSL is changing – love Battery House and Dee Why Hotel.

Anything that Mayor Regan would like to add?

“Yes,” he confirms. “A sincere thank you everyone for their efforts during Covid and in particular the most recent lockdown over Christmas. Our efforts together have made a huge difference. So many people missed Christmas Day in isolation, so a special shout out to them.

“We know we live in the best part of the best part of the world.

The way we came together, got tested, isolated and ultimately locked-down was humbling and very special. The world’s eyes were on us and were very envious of how we dealt with it.

“However, it has come at a cost to many businesses and people’s livelihoods. So please, do what you can to support them and a very big thank you to each and every one of you.”

Sean Keenan is a Sydney-based photographer who gained international recognition when he filmed incredibly rare footage of blue whales offshore.

DEE WHY SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB

Founded in 1912, Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club is among 314 affiliated clubs that patrol Australia’s beaches to ensure beach safety.

WHEN the first Europeans arrived in Australia, they were very modest and decreed it socially unacceptable to swim in the sea. Unlike the Indigenous peoples, who fished, swam, canoed and interacted with the ocean for thousands of years, the new arrivals did not enter the sea for bathing until the 1880s, when medical experts believed salt water immersion had health-giving properties.

The issue at the time was centred on what constituted ‘public decency’, and, unlike Britain, Sydney beaches didn’t feature changing sheds, whilst dedicated swimming costumes were difficult to obtain. Swimmers had to be completely covered in non-revealing clothing, and men and women weren’t permitted to swim together.

In 1902, as beach bathing gained in popularity, feisty Manly resident William Henry Gocher, Editor of the Manly and North Sydney News, announced his intention to flout the ban and swim at the beach during daylight hours.

At noon on Sunday 2 Oct 1902, clad in a kneck-to-knee costume, Gocher went for a paddle on Manly Beach. When police failed to arrest him, Gocher repeated his midday manoeuvre the two following Sundays until police finally escorted him from the water – although they declined to press charges.

But Gocher’s publicity stunt set in motion a tide of support to change the law. In Nov 1903, Manly Council were the first authority to permit all-day sea bathing, provided discreet neckto-knee swimwear was worn by everyone over 8 years of age.

FIRST LIFE SAVERS Thereafter beach swimming became tremendously popular, but people, many of whom couldn’t swim, were at risk of drowning in rough surf or carried out to sea on dangerous rips.

Inevitably, volunteer groups were formed to rescue struggling swimmers, which led to life-saving societies.

According to the Surf Life Saving Association (SLSA): “On October 18, 1907, representatives from Sydney Surf Life Saving Clubs, together with members of other interested groups, met to form the Surf Bathing Association of New South Wales, the organisation which is now known as Surf Life Saving Australia...

“Surf lifesaving clubs soon spread around the country and the surf lifesavers themselves became an Australian icon.

Since 1907 they have rescued more than 630,000 people.”

DEE WHY SLSC Dee Why Beach was privately-owned until 1911, firstly by the Jenkins family, who in the early 1800s purchased most of the tracts of land around Dee Why Lagoon, and thereafter by the Salvation Army, to whom they bequeathed it for their farms and hostels.

The Salvos even fenced it off from public access. But after the NSW Govt persuaded them to relinquish control of the sand and subdivide their land holdings for new settlers, the beach attracted regular swimming crowds. In 1912 the Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) was formed to oversee the public’s safety.

According to their website, Dee Why SLSC “is a club of more than 750 members that span Nippers, Cadets, Juniors, Seniors, Masters and Socials. These people come from all walks of life to train, patrol, compete and enjoy the friendly atmosphere that exists on one of the finest beaches on Sydney’s northern peninsula.”

life-saving ring. The black swan has long been associated with Dee Why, due to flocks of them residing on Dee Why Lagoon.

The black swan was once a fixture of Dee Why Lagoon. Today, it is a rarity, with a family of swans in the lagoon causing great excitement in the local community in recent years.

“The rarity of the black swans on the lagoon is a result of the sea grasses the swans feed on no longer growing in abundance, due to the urban development in the catchment area and the increasing rate of siltation.”

Surf Life Saving is a unique non-profit public welfare organisation that relies on a mixture of community donations, fundraising events, corporate sponsorship and government grants to survive.

SLSA annual statistics: Australian surf life savers perform an average 10,249 rescues, 3,951,428 preventive actions, and voluntarily patrol for 1,345,362 hours.

They cover 36,000km of coastline, including 12,000 beaches, which receive 100 million annual visitations from swimmers, sun-seekers and beach lovers.

Having a whale of a time on Sydney’s Northern Beaches

IT’S NOT every day you see a Fur Seal sunbaking on the beaches of the Sydney shorelines, but in Dee Why for a period it was a common occurrence.

Reg, the Australian Fur Seal, made the Northern Beaches his home during COVID. Swimmers, surfboarders and beach walkers regularly caught a glimpse of him as he lay, completely oblivious to his notoriety.

Where did Reg come from? Leopard seals are the most frequently spotted, but generally only 3 to 4 a year.

Needless to say, Reg is clearly an individual and his favourite touts included Manly, Dee Why, Bondi, Long Reef, Curl Curl, along with a brief appearance at the Central Coast.

Because Reg is still a wild animal, the authourities have had to remind locals to keep their distance (legally 40 metres) after a few tried to get a little friendly.

While Reg was not too fussed by the paparazzi, there were a couple of close calls involving a group of intoxicated men and a man with his dogs, who needless to say were lucky not to have been bitten. As a result, Reg ended up with his own security entourage, including the ORRCA volunteers, NPWS rangers, the council, surf life savers and even the police.

Join our community @ Join our community @ Reg’s true age is not known, but by the appearance of his worn teeth it’s thought he is an older seal. He appears in good health and this could be due to an abundant supply of food in the area. His diet would consist of fish, squid, octopus and also little penguins.

Sexual maturity in male seals is estimated to be from 5 to 9yrs of age, so it’s unlikely he’s sexually active, which is why it’s likely he has stayed around this area, where he has a good supply of food and a nice place to take it easy.

So, what’s in store for this leisurely gentleman who enjoys the surf and sea of the Northern beaches?

Well, no one knows for sure and the last time he was seen was in September 2020 at Fisherman’s Beach where he was thought to have left and headed south at the end of January 2021.

If you see an Australian Fur Seal on your beach and want to know if it’s Reg he can be identified by a notch on his left front flipper, although do not be tempted to get close as while appearing leisurely, have no fear his weight and teeth can make him a fearsome predator if antagonised.

Lisa Novak is no stranger to the real estate industry, but it wasn’t until 3 years ago, at the age of 46 that she moved into the sales team at Novak Properties and made her mark shooting to fame and being awarded Australia’s Most Innovative Person in Real Estate in 2020.

L

LISA saw a massive gap in the industry where social media was being underutilised, or simply “not being used for the right reasons” she says, which led her to develop her own style of real estate sales and marketing.

She found that many sellers didn’t have thousands of dollars to spend on testing the market for their property and wanted to give them an option to gain confidence without any initial outlay.

Using her own social media channels, she developed her $0 Marketing Strategy.

This strategy allows sellers to showcase their property on her social media pages, rather than going straight to a real estate portal such as Domain or RealEstate.com, and without spending any money upfront.

She produces live, raw and authentic video content of the properties she is helping to sell and posts via various channels, such as Instagram and Youtube. There is no fancy lighting or trick photography either, it’s just Lisa with her iPhone, so what you see is what you get.

Her main area of focus is residential properties primarily across the Northern Beaches, selling everything from one-bedroom apartments to luxury multi-million-dollar homes.

Using this strategy, Buyers too, get the opportunity to see what’s available before it hits the market, something that wasn’t available to the general public before. She calls this her Pre-Market Strategy.

So using social media she has created a winning combination for both sellers and buyers.

But it’s not all about selling, and something that has been key to Lisa developing and bringing this strategy to life, is her ability to help people that genuinely need it. In her words, “Not every seller wants a huge auction style campaign. They

have their own set of needs & it’s important as an industry and as agents that we listen to those.

“I sold for a lovely vendor once who was terminally ill, given just a few weeks to live. The last thing he wanted was hundreds of buyers coming through his property & an auction campaign that would run for 3-4 weeks.

I sold his property off Facebook for an incredible price within days of launching it. It was incredibly stress free for him & his family.”

Using her two-pronged strategy, Lisa has built a massive following across all her social media channels from the Northern Beaches and afar, with nearly 6,000 followers on Instagram, 4,000 on Facebook and over 136,913 views on Youtube.

So where to from here for this ambitious real estate celebrity?

Well selling more properties is definitely on the horizon and in her view the Northern Beaches is hot right now as Buyers are looking for a sea and beach change.

“In fact the Northern Beaches is out performing many other markets in Sydney as proximity to the CBD is no longer a key selling point for properties, as people can now work remotely.”

Who is the inspiration behind Palm Beach Collection?

It’s more of a “Where?”. We draw inspiration for our products from our home, the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Growing up by the sea in Palm Beach has inspired us to create a nostalgic collection of scents for our products.

What makes Palm Beach unique?

When starting out, we didn’t want to be just another candle brand so we worked on the idea of bringing the Palm Beach lifestyle to life via home fragrances. We wanted customers to buy our product and each time they use it, be reminded of the area.

Even if people hadn’t visited Palm Beach or weren’t familiar with the Northern Beaches of Sydney, we knew the scents were so powerful that it still would create an idea of the beach lifestyle for people. To survive in business, you have to have a story and a point of difference.

If you are looking for a project to get the kids outdoors and on a real life adventure, then Tiny Doors is for you.

THIS youth-inspired art collaboration gave life to 32 unique miniature doors that have been hidden across the Northern beaches.

The doors are meant to represent portals from literature and each has its own unique back story.

The aim of the game is to find all 32, with everything from The Cat in the Hat to Dr Who. It’s a great way to get them looking for clues, and initiating story time.

The project was inspired by a similar one run in Atlanta Georgia. The objective is to engage kids and youth in a treasure hunt and share in the love of books and adventure.

To get in on the hunt, all you need do is visit any of the libraries in the 6 Northern Beaches locations, and ask for a Tiny Doors’ passport and map. Libraries included are Dee Why, Manly, Seaforth, Warringah Mall, Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Avalon, Frenchs Forrest and Belrose.

The passport and map outline clues to help you find each of the hidden doors on these locations and you tick them off your passport one by one, taking a photo and loading via social media.

What is Corretto Dee Why about?

Corretto as a brand encapsulates our business model of serving great coffee .. until it’s acceptable to drink cocktails! (Our license runs from 5am, so it’s very much up to the particular person to dictate this).

We are a community-at-heart business, focused around our Dee Why space.

What’s the personality of the business?

We’re a restaurant that acts like a bar, with daily happy hour for drinks and live music on the weekends.

Located on the beachfront of Dee Why Beach means it’s bright and vibrant during the day with dark/moody lighting at night in a candlelit space.

What is your food and drink style?

We are a cocktail-focused venue while also offering mixed beverages, including craft beers, amazing coffee, an extensive wine list, and seasonal sodas (using native ingredients).

In the kitchen we cook home-style meals that ensure our guests are our priority (big portions, big flavours!). Our menu has European ties (hence the Corretto name) but is contextualised in our Aussie backyard.

Where do you source your produce from?

We work with local suppliers in surrounding areas to support their businesses, who, in turn support us with incredible local produce: Joe at Zaffierra; the boys at Devitts in Narrabeen; John & Teresa at Leos Fruit & Veg; our favourite ladies at Tiens Bread Dee Why; and Viccolo florist in Dee Why. Why is sustainable produce important to you?

Although it’s a buzz-word that’s been thrown around too much recently, we do approach sustainability with a mindset of reuse/

repurpose and eliminating single-use plastics. Our focus is on using lesser-known products, such as ‘ugly’ fruits and otherwise discarded/wasted products; so we put less stress on the supply chain in the first place.

We have sustainable programs in place, including donations to save the ocean with every bottle of rosé sold, and a dehydrator that gets a heck of a work-out with bar scraps and fruit waste for our drinks’ menus!

What teams do you support and why?

We’re currently supporting the Beacon Hill Football Club Premier League Woman’s soccer side, Terri our local Yogi (who runs weekly Yoga classes on Friday mornings), and the local Dee Why Surf Life Savers, because we have always put our community at the heart of our operation. The venue is not a business to us, it’s a community hub that brings people together and facilitates the day-to-day running of clubs and communities.

Making your own dog treats is one of the easiest home bakes you can tackle.

THERE many advantages to living in the Northern Beaches and spectacular coast walks and reserves are two of them, especially if you are looking to take your 4-legged friends for an outing.

Adams Street Reserve, John Fisher Park (LOT 526 Park St Curl Curl NSW 2096)

Adjacent to Curl Curl Lagoon, this is a popular off the leash dog friendly park. There’s plenty of exercise areas on the vast football fields and convenient parking nearby.

The Curl Curl lagoon, is great for a cool off and nearby are doggy bags, drinking taps and public toilets.

THIS really is one of the easist things anyone can do in a kitchen - bar boiling the kettle - trust me. Not only is this dog treat recipe simple, you can add anything into the mix that your dog loves. My little nugget loves carrot and sweet potato, but you can swap these for anything that tickles your particular puppy’s fancy.

I like to add Turmeric to mine, as studies have shown it can help with ageing joints and the Flaxseed aids digestion and gut health. Which we all appreciate.

YOU WILL NEED: Dry Ingredients 250g Rolled Oats Tbsp Ground Flaxseed 1/2 tsp Turmeric Pinch ground black pepper

Wet Ingredients 2 Eggs Grated/purée’d carrot Grated/purée’d sweet potato Tbsp Peanut butter Banana (optional)

METHOD: Preheat the oven to fan 1700C. Roughly grind the oats into a flour (a food processor helps, but I have been known to use my NutriBullet). Place all the ingredients in a bowl and knead into a dough.

Roll out between two sheets of greasperoof paper to desired thickness.

Cut into shapes, or squares... your dog really isn’t going to mind what they look like. Honest.

Bake on a non stick tray for approximately 20 minutes.

Store in an airtight container in a dry cupboard or the fridge for up to a week.

Each morning she makes sure everyone is awake by miaowing and crawling over them, 2 minutes before the alarm is due to go off.

IN THE beginning, Buy on the Beaches seemed to be a quick fix to an urgent issue, but little did she know that a full-scale lockdown was just around the corner. Casey’s business became even more important to the locals than even she could have imagined.

Casey says “Over Christmas we felt completely helpless as so many small businesses, especially those in hospitality, tourism and retail, were forced to close during their biggest trading weeks of the year.

“Lots of people were asking when the government was going to step in and help out, but I felt like that was just a bandaid approach.

“So, I created a Facebook and Instagram account for Buy on The Beaches and started showcasing local businesses.

“Overall, I think the main reason that the initiative resonates with so many people, not just business owners, is because everyone is proud of our local area and we all want the economy to thrive.“ In just 48 hours she had over 1,000 followers on her social media account, @buyonthebeaches.

And much to Casey’s delight the Northern Beaches Council got behind her and encouraged everyone to follow. This included local councillors, State and Federal MPs and the local chambers of commerce who all started sharing posts and encouraging everyone to do the same.

Local businesses also started tagging and using the hashtag #buyonthebeaches to let Casey know they existed. Customers were commenting on these posts to show their support.

“And the businesses are so very grateful - we get messages of

Whilst many businesses struggled through COVID there were a few that found new opportunities and Buy on the Beaches was one.

Casey Merwood took advantage of COVID to do good for the community by giving back and helping local businesses who were struggling.

She did this through social media and her Buy on the Beaches campaign, which showcased the many amazing local businesses in the area, encouraging everyone to shop local.

In fact, many Northern Beaches residents were delighted by this initiative, often discovering shops and products that they hadn’t known about in their local area. thanks all day long,” she says.

How is everyone feeling after the Christmas break COVID scare?

In the post-Christmas COVID, it’s Casey’s view that the public is feeling more realistic. Towards the end of 2020, complacency had slipped in but then with the Christmas time cluster there was a curt reminder that the pandemic was still very much alive.

Casey’s goal for 2021 is to drive a culture of shopping local before looking elsewhere.

“We have so many amazing businesses and if we stand by them, it will boost our local economy, meaning we all benefit from it.”

You can get involved by shopping locally whenever possible and encouraging everyone you know to do the same. Casey says “you can also support this initiative by encouraging friends and family to come and visit the beaches (as they’ll then spend money there too).”
