HELLO and welcome to the first edition of Neighbourhood Media’s community magazine 2000.

We trust you will enjoy the features, tips and link-ups with local businesses and organisations.

Our cover feature focuses on Vandal, the creative team behind the recent artistic redecoration of World Square, and the NFTree installation at The Galeries on George Street. Vandal have also been involved in a range of collaborative projects with artists, designers and film makers, from campaigns - including breast cancer awareness and animal welfare - to exhibitions and advertisements.

We also spoke to celebrated painter and musician Reg Mombassa, whose iconic artworks are part of our cultural landscape, from album covers to clothing to gallery walls. In 2007, one of Mombassa’s works was shortlisted for the Archibald Prize. In 2013 he unveiled a 60 metrelong artwork on the hoardings covering construction work at the Sydney Opera House. Reg was also a founder member of party band Mental As Anything and now performs with his brother in Dog Trumpet.

In Elliot Lindsay’s true crime feature he investigates the notorious Ziegfield’s Night Club, which, for decades had an unenviable reputation as the paramount venue for good times and not-so-good people. Located at 88 King St, it was the meeting place for Razor Gangs and organised crime until a deadly murder on the premises sealed its own fate.

After mixing with murderous types, we felt compelled to meander around a few spooky sites reportedly haunted by the undead in The Rocks and City centre. We cast a (shaky!) spotlight on these in Ghastly Ghostly Sites.

We also celebrate the 25th anniversary of Big Issue Australia; raised a glass to St Vincent’s Hospital winning two top prizes at the annual NSW Business Awards; lit a barbecue for BarbeCURE cancer charity; and spoke with community photographer Tom Psomotragos. Tom has spent many years documenting characters and locations around Glebe and the City, creating a fascinating portfolio of images.

All this and more, including theatre listings, pets, how to prepare a perfect seafood spread, Business Directory, sudoku and a quiz... We hope you’ll enjoy reading this edition of 2000 as much as we enjoyed creating it.

It’s an often-repeated claim that Aboriginal clans completely disappeared from Sydney not long after European colonists arrived in 1788, due to disease and displacement. Not true.

“WELCOME to Gadigal land, welcome to Gadigal country” veteran Oz-rockers Midnight Oil sing in their chart-topping song Gadigal Land, their first new music in 17 years.

The lyrics criticise European justice and the unwelcome problems that were forced upon the Aboriginals when Warrane (Sydney Cove) was chosen for a British prison colony in 1788.

But where is Gadigal Land?

Social anthropologists and historians have determined this historic region extended from the southern shores of Sydney Harbour south to Botany Bay – which Indigenous Dharugspeaking peoples called Gadi or Cadi (C and G were often interchangeable, as were the letters B and P).

The Gadigal (‘gal’ meaning ‘men of’, ie: ‘men of Gadi’, women were described with the suffix ‘gal-yan’) gathered foods, hunted and lived in this forested region, east from the Pacific Ocean to an approximate north-south interface that would now run between Pirrama (Pyrmont) and Bulanaming (Marrickville).

This area was enclosed by the waterways of Port Jackson in the north, Kamay (Botany Bay) to the south, where the Gadigal overlapped with the Kamaygal clans, and along the north-eastern banks of Goolay’yari (Cooks River – derived from the word for ‘pelican’) where the Gadigal overlapped with the Wangal clans from further west.

When Europeans established themselves in the bay known as Warrane (Sydney Cove), there were an estimated two dozen Indigenous clans of around 25-60 members each across the Sydney region - now known as the Eora peoples. Between them they spoke 7 dialects of the endemic Dharug language group the Gadigal spoke Biyal-biyal.

Gadigal people of the coastal region were katungal (‘sea people’), primarily reliant on tidal river and harbour foods. These they gathered along the shoreline or hauled from the waters (Indigenous people inland who hunted and trapped animals were known as paienbera ‘tomahawk people’).

The men skewered their prey with garrara (barbed-end spears) and the women caught them with narrami (nets) and burra (fish hooks made from shells). Fish were often caught from nowie (bark canoes) and cooked fresh in the boats on hot

coals atop clay slabs.

Prime fishing spots were typically marked with fish, whale and sea creature petroglyphs carved into sandstone on the shoreline, communicating favourable marine prey or tribal totems to others via ancient symbols, which were maintained by designated clan stewards.

In April 1789, a smallpox epidemic had a catastrophic impact on the Aboriginal peoples of Sydney and beyond. There’s a high probability Indigenous peoples were deliberately infected, perhaps by rogue Marines. Witnesses later claimed that the Indigenous inhabitants at Balmoral Beach, from where the contagion began and spread, accepted blankets from the British printed with red stripes and a crown – the same as Royal Navy blankets of the era.

With almost no immunity to European diseases, the majority of the Indigenous people living around the harbour foreshores succumbed to the deadly contagion or fled inland.

First Governor Arthur Phillip estimated that approximately half the Aboriginal population dwelling around Sydney Harbour died, but historians have since revised the figure upwards to between 60 to 90 per cent.

A common misconception is that Aboriginal peoples completely vanished from central Sydney in the wake of the smallpox epidemic.

Despite the British colonists clearing forests and quarrying sandstone to build permanent dwellings, whilst expanding from a tent village into the neighbouring coves, west to establish farming in Rose Hill (Parramatta), and north to construct a military fort at Woodford Bay (Lane Cove), the latter built to suppress Indigenous resistance, surviving Aboriginal peoples from different clans regrouped.

Thereafter they continued interacting with the European interlopers, albeit socially-distanced in communal campsites. These included The Domain, Woolloomooloo, Double Bay, Camp Cove and Bondi Beach, where Indigenous people remained until long after British land acquisitions encroached upon their habitat and neutered their way of life.

Join our community @ Nevertheless, Sydney Aboriginals provided essential services to the British colonists that earned them respect and reliable incomes, and not just in labouring and domestic assistance. Many of them continued saltwater activities in which they specialised, like fishing, gathering seafood, sealing and whaling, and were utilised for other traditional skills, such as police trackers, game rangers and shooting guides.

As the burgeoning colony built ships and docks around Cockle and Blackwattle Bays, Sydney became a major importer/ exporter of goods. Until 1834, fisheries products – principally whale oil and sealskins - dominated the primary exports of NSW, which relied heavily upon Aboriginal knowledge and skill in sourcing the marine life.

Thereafter wool (first exported to Britain in 1821) took over as the primary export, increasing to an annual 6.4 million kilograms in 1850. Agriculture supplanted marine industries, revealing the success of the pastoralist ‘squatters’ in their colonisation of Australia’s hinterland.

The squatters literally occupied territory not yet surveyed or legally available to them, clearing forests to establish vast sheep and cattle farms.

This frontier expansion came at the expense of the Indigenous inhabitants and the wildlife they relied upon for food and clothing, and led to clashes and massacres.

When convict transportation ceased in 1840, Sydney’s population was recorded at 35,000, but the discovery of gold in Ophir, near Orange, in Feb 1851, triggered a gold rush. This brought a massive influx of tens of thousands of speculators and other opportunity seekers to Australia, swelling the national population to 75,000 by the 1870s, substantially increasing Indigenous Australians’ risk of further attacks and displacement.

Attempts were made to safeguard Indigenous people from

the mass expansion of the city by placing them under government supervision in various ‘protectorates’ and state-sponsored missions. However, Europeans encroached and built on their semi-permanent encampments (the aforementioned Domain, Woolloomooloo, Double Bay, Camp Cove and Bondi Beach).

From the 1850s onward, most of Sydney’s city-dwelling Aboriginals were effectively subsumed into the British way of life.

A large exhibition of Aboriginal Sydney, including spears, throwing sticks, artefacts and artworks, was held in the Garden Palace in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens near Macquarie Street, which was built for the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879.

Tragically, on 22 Sept 1882, a fire destroyed the building and its contents, taking with it assorted government records, the results of the 1881 Census, and disastrously, according to a plaque in the Botanic Gardens: “every publicly owned artefact of the Aboriginal tribe, Eora, who inhabited the area before European settlement.”

Yet despite enduring decades of dislocation, racism, brutality and neglect, Aboriginal contribution to Australia’s culture, arts, sporting achievements and social outlook has been tremendous, and continues to this day..

If someone told you that a group of Vandals were given free rein to redecorate parts of Sydney city, you might expect an orgy of graffiti, broken glass, arson and a little unrestrained looting. Yet these Vandals pleasantly surprised everyone – in fact, we chose one of their woven sculptures, by artist GabFZ, for the cover of this magazine.

The Redfern Vandals (who’ve never, to my knowledge, sacked Rome - or any other city - like their historic namesakes) worked on some praiseworthy projects in the past year, continuing 35 years of extraordinary achievements.

Among the stand-outs: Produced the campaign film In Support of You, by Breast Cancer Network Australia and Berlei Bras, to encourage all Australians to support those affected by Breast Cancer Presented a Mexican-themed exhibition featuring 31 artists from KRVNM to celebrate the annual Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), showcasing elaborate illustrations of skulls.

Supervised a Spotify music advert with Genesis Owusu, Peach and The Inspired Unemployed, which saw Genesis immersed in a bath tub filled with fruit loops breakfast cereal!

Restored the iconic 1975 Australian film Sunday Too Far Away, starring Jack Thompson, for the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

Collaborated on the NFTree Xmas tree, featuring 8 artists whose works were displayed alongside translucent green pyramids in The Galeries fashion, art and dining hub at 500 George St, City.

Won three Silver awards at the international Animation and Effects Awards Festival from 9 nominations.

Assisted Animals Australia animal welfare agency with the animated campaign film Join the Evolution, to encourage people to respect farm animals (one of the aforementioned Silver award winners).

Worked on a Kit Kat chocolate advert for Nestlé, featuring quarrelling wizards and a crystal ball, with actors Miritana Hughes and Australian screen legend Michael Caton.

So, there you are, Vandals can be seen in a positive light!

Ziegfeld’s Night Club in Central Sydney once had an unenviable reputation as the paramount venue for good times and not-so-good people. All manner of vice took place within its subterranean rooms, and several lives lost through misadventure or murder.

THE whining of the jazz clarinet cut through the ambient sounds of a smoke-filled nightclub several hours past midnight. A latenight crowd filled the venue from wall-to-wall, drinking, clinking glasses, laughing and whistling out for the attention of waiters.

On the stage, before the band, stood a glamourous performer in drag, belting out the latest cabaret hits from New York.

Rowdy men in three-piece suits occupied the tables at the front row. Their features were intimidating, hardened with cauliflower ears and mutilated faces. Around them sat dolled-up women in evening dresses and gloves. Their cheap perfume cutting through the smell of stale beer and tobacco smoke.

Behind them, a man with a stern face entered the venue with his wife and two others. The manager showed them to a table in the back row where they sat drinking schooners of beer. He seemed agitated yet calm at the same time. He kept his eyes locked on the men in the front row, and after 20 minutes, he put his glass down, rose to his feet and walked towards them.

On the rowdy table sat a man with a crooked nose. He recognised the stern-faced man walking in his direction, and he called out to him. «You’ve got balls, showing your face here, Chow!”

Chow, the stern-faced man now standing before him, replied, “Did you think you would get away with what you did, you cowardly dog?”

Beneath Chow’s waistcoat was a handgun that he drew and aimed at the man seated before him.

Even with the gun aimed at his face, the seated man smiled.

“You wouldn’t do it here, with all the lights shining and people around.”

He was wrong.

A loud blast filled the room. Blood splashed across the faces and dresses of the women around him. Then five more rounds

were unloaded into his stomach and chest. The gun was then turned on the remaining men and women seated at the table.

“Who’s bloody next?!»

The crooked-nosed man lay on the ground twitching as blood pooled on the old ash-covered floors.

The panic-stricken crowd scrambled for the exit as the gunman walked out calmly.

There were few places in Sydney during the 1940s and 50s as notorious as Ziegfeld’s Night Club and Cabaret. The venue was established in the 1920s in the cellars of 88 King Street of Sydney’s CBD. The club became known for hosting drag shows long before Kings Cross and Oxford Street were a thing. Deep in the age of sly-grog and razor gangs, Ziegfeld’s was known as a place for late-night debauchery, violent crime and MURDER. TIMELINE OF DEBASEMENT In the 20s it was a haunt for thieves and ‘razor gangs’ where, one night in 1927, it was the scene of a particularly bloody razor brawl between rival gangs. Later that year a cop was beaten mercilessly.

In the 1930s the drag shows were introduced. However, the decade was also plagued with regular armed hold-ups, robberies and police raids.

One evening in 1938, a 41-year-old woman named Florence Thomas had been drinking heavily at Ziegfeld’s with a 20-year-old sailor she had just met.

Afterwards, they went to her place in Newtown, where the sailor spent a few hours in her company. It is then alleged she willingly accompanied him back to his ship, where the sailor says she tripped and fell into the harbour. Her lifeless water-logged body was dragged up a day later.

No charges were pressed, the ship was allowed to sail on, and the truth around her suspicious death remains a mystery.

In 1942, during the Second World War, 150,000 US servicemen were stationed in Australia, and many came to Sydney for rest and recuperation seeking exotic entertainment, booze, gambling, drugs and women. Ziegfeld’s offered it all and became a mecca for the ‘yanks’.

While performing a Christmas cabaret, popular drag queen, Harry Sidney Foy, attempted to kiss several US and Australian servicemen. Most laughed it off, as it was considered part of his act. Unfortunately, one US serviceman took offence to what he termed as «queer» and «filthy behaviour.»

When Foy came in with a kiss, the American punched the entertainer so hard he went flying back into the band and hit his head. Several hours later, Foy was dead.

The American was to be tried for manslaughter, but a government official intervened, and the charge was dropped.

In an act of victim-blaming, it was implied that Foy’s death was brought on by his own degenerate behaviour, and the servicemen would not be held responsible. Justice was never served.

In 1943 an underage prostitution racket that catered to the US servicemen was busted by the vice squad. It operated in Ziegfeld’s, where the men met the girls and were then taxied to a house in Bondi. It was shut down, and those involved were gaoled.

Ziegfeld’s golden age ended with the war. However, its reputation remained, and locals still enjoyed its late-night entertainment and sly-grog. By the end of the 1940s, Ziegfeld’s was being raided by the NSW Vice Squad so frequently that most couples didn’t even stop dancing while the raids took place.

CHOW DOWN In 1951, Ziegfeld’s was immortalised in Australian true crime history. John Frederick «Chow» Hayes was one of the most dangerous gangsters in Australia during the 1930s and 40s.

Word got around that rival gangster and former boxer, John «Bobby» Lee, was gunning for him. It turned out to be correct.

Lee and his associates, including a 31-year-old Lennie McPherson who would become ‘Mr Big’ in Kings Cross during the 70s and 80s, organised a plan to wack Chow Hayes. But, by mistake, they killed Chow’s nephew instead.

An enraged Chow sought retribution and on 29 May 1951 he found Bobby Lee inside Ziegfeld’s nightclub and shot him dead in front of more than fifty patrons.

Chow’s reputation put fear in the witnesses and of the dozens interviewed, not a single one would testify that they saw who pulled the trigger.

Finally, infamous Police Detective Ray ‘Gunner’ Kelly arrested Chow. The old school detective knew the only way to convict him for the murder was to lie that Chow confessed when he hadn’t.

In court, Chow pleaded innocent and claimed that Detective Kelly said to him, «Now look, Chow. You know that I know you killed Lee, and I will tell as many lies as I can to convict you, and you will tell as many lies as you can to beat it. Is that fair enough?»

Chow was ultimately found guilty of the murder and sentenced to death by hanging but was then commuted to life in prison.

The Government had had enough of Ziegfeld’s by this point and decided to shut it down. However, its demise was likely inevitable as Sydney’s vice and night scene drifted to King Cross, and the old King Street club scene died off.

88 King Street was demolished in the 70s to make way for the building known as 175 Pitt Street, and the luxury watch store, Panerai, now occupies the site where once stood the notorious Ziegfeld’s Night Club and Cabaret.

Everybody loves a ghost tale, especially if it can be linked to a gory story from yesteryear. We set out after dark to explore some of the most haunted venues around The Rocks and city centre, and with the crackle of ancient shackles, heard tales that made our hair stand on end!

THE ROCKS + MILLERS POINT THE historic Rocks and Millers Pt neighbourhoods host many ghost tales, some attributed to the arrival of ‘black death’ in Jan 1900 via bubonic plague-infected ship rats, eventually killing 103 people.

Hero of Waterloo Hotel, 81 Lower Fort St, Millers Point In 1849, Thomas Kirkman, landlord of this heritage-listed pub, reputedly pushed his wife Anne down the stairs to her death. Anne Kirkman’s ghost is believed to play late night piano music in the bar, and the venue website claims: “After upstairs functions rooms are reset for a new day, several chairs can be found facing the fireplace the next morning...”

A popular venue for ghost tours, a smugglers’ tunnel that reportedly once coursed from the bar’s cellar and under the road was allegedly used by press gangs to ‘shanghai’ wayward seafarers.

Observatory Hill, Upper Fort Street, Millers Point Observatory Hill was first named Windmill Hill by British colonists, because it was the site of Sydney’s first windmill.

In 1857 an observatory and astronomer’s residence were built at the hill’s peak, although it closed in 1982, due to light and pollution disrupting clear viewing, and is now a museum.

Spirits reputedly still linger in the Signal Masters cottage.

A ‘sad-looking’ boy, dressed in a white shirt with dark pants and carrying a chain in one hand, has been seen at the hilltop.

He is reportedly the ghost of a 15-year-old ship’s cabin boy who was killed in a street fight nearby in the late 1880s.

A ghost tour operator claimed her uncle George, an illusionist magician from the early 1940s who performed under the stage name ‘Chandalu’, loiters at the top of Observatory Hill.

In 2008 a woman published a night photo of a blurry man in an old-fashioned formal winter coat walking past the south facade of Sydney Observatory. Taken on 5 July 2008, she claimed the area was deserted at the time, apart from herself and her husband.

CITY INNER-EAST Darlinghurst Gaol, Forbes St, Darlinghurst Once known for its brutality, the writer Henry Lawson (who

served a short sentence within its walls) coined it ‘Starvinghurst Gaol’ due to the meagre rations the inmates received. Home of the National Art School since 1995, seventy-six people were hanged on the premises.

Between the gaol’s opening in 1841 and 1852, public hangings took place on a temporary scaffold erected above the main gate on Forbes Street. Thereafter, until 1908, executions continued inside the prison walls on a permanent scaffold in a corner of E-wing.

Many restless souls reputedly haunt this site, including executed prisoners. One of the apparitions is a ‘bodyless head’ near the men’s toilet block, adjacent to where the post1852 scaffold stood.

Tusculum House, 1-3 Manning Street, Potts Point A female figure dressed in an old-fashioned nurse’s uniform, reportedly haunts the balcony of this 1831-built mansion (now offices) and occasionally trigger burglar alarms.

Victoria Barracks, Oxford St, Paddington Australia’s premier military training centre for a century (although it was occupied by British troops until 1870), the Regency-style Edwardian barracks were constructed between 1841-1846 by convict labour, with the Garrison Hospital, District Military Prison and Barrack Master’s bungalow built alongside.

According to Army Museum of NSW: “the prison is reputedly haunted by a ghost, Charlie the Redcoat, who hanged himself while incarcerated for shooting his sergeant.”

CITY CENTRE Royal Botanic Gardens, central Sydney.

Although there is little trace of the Garden Palace built for the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879 and destroyed by a fire in Sept 1822 (where a Cupid statue now stands), it is among several sites in the Botanic Gardens allegedly haunted by various spectres. Rathborne Lodge, the 1856-built former residence of the Governor’s gardener towards the south-east corner, is reportedly haunted by a female ghost.

Capitol Theatre, 13 Campbell St, Haymarket, City A male ‘phantom’ was reportedly seen roaming around the theatre premises during a refurbishment.

Hyde Park Barracks, central Sydney The former barracks, hospital, convict accommodation, mint and courthouse located at Macquarie Street in the city centre was once a prison housing over 800 convicts. Numerous noisy ghosts reportedly wander the premises, some with heavy footsteps, including a very vocal former superintendent who has been heard using ‘extremely foul language’. A woman dressed in white has also been observed loitering beneath a fig tree in the forecourt or ‘floating across the theatrette’, and a man in prisoner’s uniform ‘hovers’ in a hallway.

CITY SOUTH Mortuary Station, Regent St, Chippendale Mortuary Railway Station, also known as Necropolis Receiving Station (now known as Regent Street Railway Station), was a platform on Sydney’s Rookwood Cemetery railway line. It also hosted funeral trains to Woronora General Cemetery in Sutherland and Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle.

Funeral parties boarded special trains that transported them directly to the cemetery, with coffins loaded into a dedicated carriage behind the mourners.

The ornate Free Gothic style sandstone building (still standing) opened in June 1869 and continued as a funeral terminus until 1938. The dedicated cemetery line wasn’t closed until 3 April 1948.

The spirits of the departed who never departed the station are said to roam the platform.

Central Railway Station, Haymarket Devonshire Street Cemetery was Sydney’s principal graveyard from 1820 to its last burial in 1866, when it was over-capacity.

Over the next two decades the site fell into ruin. In 1901, to allow construction of Central Railway Station, NSW Govt paid for the disinterment and relocation of 8,500 remains to metropolitan cemeteries chosen by those closest to the deceased.

The remaining 30,000+ unclaimed bodies were dug up and transported on a specially-built tram to La Perouse and buried in the new Bunnerong Cemetery. Construction of the railway proceeded, with Central Station opening on 4 Aug 1906.

During the 1960s-70s, four tunnels were dug and four platforms built. Platforms 24 & 25 for the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line were opened in 1979, however, above them, platforms 26 & 27, intended for an airport line, were never utilised.

The ghostly abandoned platforms included corridors leading to a disused station master’s office and toilets, and a disused jail cell complete with chains for shackling prisoners. Several rail employees and assorted other explorers have reported hearing voices there, despite the deserted platforms being deep underground beneath earth and concrete.

In 2019-20, workers adapting platforms 26 & 27 to house 17 new power and communications rooms for the Sydney Metro Rail reported hearing the sounds of children playing on the platforms.

Glebe photographer Tom Psomotragos has a diverse and interesting portfolio of images, ranging from commercial – weddings and events – to photodocumentary, to a series of informal portraits of Glebe residents taken with his creative partner Eulalie Moore.

Born in Karpasi, on the island of Lemnos, Greece, in 1953, Tom arrived in Australia in 1955 and grew up in the close Limnian community in Melbourne.

A qualified TAFE and secondary school teacher, Tom developed his photography from high school experimentation and also moved into cinematography. After establishing a commercial photography studio in Glebe he created the first digital photographic books in Australia.

In 1988 he began a long-term photographic study of an Eastern Arrernte Indigenous family group around Alice Springs.

Then, in 2009, he initiated Glebe 150, a series of portraits of Glebe characters and personalities (in conjunction with Glebe Chamber of Commerce), which involved a month-long exhibition in various outdoor and indoor locations around the suburb.

“We are a team, Eulalie Moore and myself,” Tom said. “We are doing profile pieces on people’s personal lives where they are comfortable. There are some great stories behind the photos..”

Tom’s portraits, the majority in black & white, are informal but engaging, capturing people at work or rest, some looking at the camera, others caught in a moment.

Tom’s Homeless series of images documents the street sleepers of Sydney, primarily the dwellers beneath the viaduct arches in Glebe’s Wentworth Park.

Tom also specialises in wedding photography and photodocumentary. Many of his wedding photos are not staged but beautiful and tender moments captured off-guard, with a natural feel, like reportage.

Was it a conscious choice to apply his observational/journalistic style to recording weddings, or a happy accident?

“It’s capturing the emotional and unselfconsciously lived moments that I love in this work - unsentimental, and real... As in most commercial or commissioned work, I have taken into account my subjects, to capture and render them as tenderly and positively as possible, even at times glamorously…

“I use my drama college studies to help marry this commercial work and my artistic approach… My passion is for photography as an expressive medium for what I would describe as embracing and extolling the human spirit. It’s a tall order and I expect to fail, but it’s at the core of my art practice…

“As with my other art projects – my landscapes, international street photography series, bunker series [shot in WWII bunkers around Malabar, La Perouse, Middle Harbour and West Head] - there is a complex interweaving of personal and what I call transpersonal experience. Certain themes and symbolic representations reappear, which only make sense in a synchronistic embrace of these works...”

NUTTY GENIUS

Artist and musician Chris O’Doherty - better known by his nom de guerre Reg Mombassa – has had a fascinating and fantastical career.

MOST people are familiar with Reg Mombassa as the prolific and successful artist behind many absurdist urban landscapes that have graced posters, album covers, images for Mambo clothing and assorted campaigns.

Mombassa was a founder member of Sydney rock band Mental As Anything, formed in 1976 by a group of friends at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School in Darlinghurst – the former gaol).

The O’Doherty brothers Chris (Reg) and Peter wrote or cowrote some of the Mentals’ more popular songs, including Spirit Got Lost, Berserk Warriors, Brain Brain, Egypt, Apocalypso, Close Again and Nigel.

In April 2000, after the O’Doherty brothers left Mental As Anything to focus on their respective artistic careers, they continued writing and performing music together under the name Dog Trumpet. Described as “arguably the loudest soft-rock band in southern NSW” on the band’s promotional T-shirts, the slogan typifies the gentle humour that runs rife through the brothers’ creative repertoire.

Responding to a question on his website on his favourite three artists, Mombassa replied “Bosch, Vincent Van Gogh and Robert Crumb” – which sums up the surreal, humorous, irreverent and sometimes nightmarish scenarios he conjures up from his imagination.

With typical droll humour, Mombassa revealed to us that rotting equines feature among the artistic pieces he is currently working on.

“I have just done a dozen or so pen and ink drawings of armed koalas, Australian robots, muscle horses and maggot-infested business horses.”

Familiar themes in his bold and colourful artwork include trees with eyes, skull-like cars, guitars with legs, kiwi birds, kangaroos and space ships. Sydney Opera House is also a recurring motif.

“The Opera House is an interesting subject,” he confirmed, “because it changes shape and colour according to where you view it from and what time of the day or night it is. It is also a useful graphic shorthand for indicating an Australian location.

Dog Trumpet and the Mentals have both performed at the Opera House.”

Both Dog Trumpet and Mental As Anything have featured Mombassa’s paintings for album covers, but other artists who sought his surreal imagery to illustrate their music include Public Image, Crowded House, Paul Kelly and Mondo Rock.

Does he have a personal favourite? “I’m not good at favourites but I quite like the PIL cover and a single cover for Let’s Go to Paradise for the Mentals, which led to me working for Mambo.”

Mombassa’s artwork has also been used to illustrate important social and environmental issues, such as Greenpeace, The Wilderness Society and A Just Australia. A cartoon of a skull smoking a cigar was utilised by Save Millers Point for their unsuccessful campaign to prevent Millers Point social housing from being sold to private owners (many of which are now rented out as Air BnB properties).

Is there a cause that’s particularly close to his heart?

“Environmentalism and human rights are both important subjects,” Mombassa revealed.

After 30 years the music of Dog Trumpet went global in July 2021 in a deal with Demon Records that saw their recorded output digitally available worldwide. In Oct 2021, the band’s seven albums were available together on vinyl for the first time.

Demon Records describe the brothers’ music as “an eclectic blend of rock, psychedelic folk and semi-abstract blues; whimsical, political, curious, intimate, scientific, erotic and witty.”

“We released a new album, Great South Road, last year,” Mombassa revealed, “and we are currently about halfway through recording a new album.”

So, with ‘eclectic’ music in the pipeline and surreal artworks in creation, you can continue to expect the unexpected from the nutty genius and his fevered imagination…

The Big Issue Foundation, Australia’s biggest social enterprise and best known for The Big Issue magazine sold by homeless street vendors, celebrated 25 years of its Australian publication in June 2021.

UPON reaching their quarter-century milestone, The Big Issue marked the occasion with a very special bumper birthday edition magazine - copies of which are still on sale.

The 76-page commemorative edition celebrated 25 years of The Big Issue’s rich history, told through the eyes of its magazine vendors – those experiencing homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage.

Originally founded in 1991 in Britain by John Bird and Gordon Roddick, the latter the founder of The Body Shop (cruelty-free cosmetics), the magazine was initially published monthly but, in June 1993, The Big Issue went weekly and subsequently launched regional editions throughout the UK. In response to increasing global inequality and homelessness, The Big Issue expanded its operation worldwide to Australia, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, South Korea, and Taiwan.

To become a vendor, one must be homeless or almost homeless, vulnerably housed or marginalised in some way.

Vendors earn a percentage of their sales.

The Big Issue’s Australian edition was launched in Melbourne in 1996 and has since expanded to six states and territories with hundreds of vendors proudly donning the iconic Big Issue fluoro vest across the country every day.

Over 800 vendors Australia-wide retail the magazine from street corners to shopping malls to transport hubs. Their backgrounds detail a wide range of unfortunate experiences that brought them to seek assistance. This includes homelessness, long-term unemployment, intellectual and physical disability, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependency and family breakdown. Every vendor has a different story, but all are looking to improve their lives.

Big Issue vendors have the opportunity to earn an immediate income and engage meaningfully with the community. They are proudly working selling a genuine product, which is why purchasers of the magazine are encouraged to read the magazine they buy, not just think of it as a receipt for charity.

Since Australia’s first edition, more than 7000 vendors have sold 13 million copies of the magazine to a significant readership of over 250,000 people per year - putting $32 million into the pockets of those living on the margins.

Steven Persson, CEO of The Big Issue Australia, said The Big Issue is an agent for social change, and it is more committed

than ever to helping people build confidence and capacity to help themselves.

St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, has taken out 2 awards at the Business NSW 2021 Business Awards.

The annual awards, this year sponsored by the City of Sydney, have 13 different categories recognising growth, entrepreneurship and business success.

THE Darlinghurst hospital’s Covid-19 response saw it win the most Outstanding Community or Cultural Organisation category among a field of high achievers, including sustainable homewares designers, photographers and eye specialists.

And St Vincent’s innovative program promoting better health outcomes for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities saw it claim its second award for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion.

The latter initiative, a flexi-clinic called St Vincent’s Stay’n In, Stay’n Deadly Project, was founded to promote a safe and welcoming space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

The flexi-clinic means that soon after arrival, patients are seen by a staff specialist or ‘flexi-doctor’, significantly reducing waiting, testing and diagnosis times. At the same time, Aboriginal Health Unit team members are on hand to support the patient throughout their treatment and follow-up care.

The team at St Vincent’s was overjoyed to have been externally recognised at the Business NSW 2021 Awards for their efforts over the past 18 months. St Vincent’s CEO Associate Professor, Anthony Scembri, said the awards were particularly special this year.

“At the heart of everything we do at St Vincent’s is our longstanding mission to serve our community – particularly the poor and vulnerable. These 2 awards represent important validation that we continue to remain true to this mission, particularly in the face of some of our greatest health challenges.”

Business NSW CEO Daniel Hunter said the awards recognise business success and resilience from sectors across the state.

BarbeCURE is Cure Cancer’s annual national awareness and fundraising campaign. We invite all Australians to turn on their BBQ and bring their friends and family together to raise funds for cancer research.

The campaign has raised $1 million over the past four years, helping to support over 10 early-career cancer researchers.

Cure Cancer is dedicated entirely to funding early career researchers. We identify, assess and fund the research we believe has the best possible chance of finding a cure.

Most importantly, we fund research for ALL cancer types and ALL areas of cancer research.

We recently recruited new celebrity chef ambassadors Anna Polyviou and Gary Mehigan to assist with publicity and fundraising.

This year, all funds raised from BarbeCURE will go to Dr Laurence Cheung with his research into childhood leukaemia. Our aim is to raise over $200K to allow Dr Cheung to continue his research, which is close to making a breakthrough for childhood cancer patients.

THE Sydney Dog & Cats Home (SDCH) has been taking care of Sydney’s lost, abandoned and neglected pets since 1946, providing food, shelter and veterinary care to unwanted or stray pets - primarily dogs and cats.

SDCH work in association with the municipal councils of Sydney, and cross multiple council areas, including Georges River and Bayside in the south, North Sydney in the north, and east to west from Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick to the Inner West and Fairfield.

SDCH is also the only not-for-profit animal pound in Sydney.

SDCH support the Getting to Zero movement, which means they strive to re-home every healthy and treatable animal that arrives on their premises, and never place a time limit on any homeless animal awaiting adoption to their forever home..

Getting to Zero (G2Z) aims to increase responsibility for companion animals so that every community and municipality can achieve zero euthanasia of all healthy and treatable cats and dogs.

With the arrival of 2022 and workers returning to their offices and places of work, SDCH has launched the Corporate Snuggle Rescue Program.

The Corporate Snuggle Rescue Program is a unique way to bring happiness into the workplace while supporting a great cause: the welfare of Sydney’s lost and abandoned pets.

Animals from the SDCH shelter are brought into your workplace for a cuddle and a bit of pampering. These interactive events are scheduled on a Thursday morning and run for half an hour to an hour.

Each event includes animal playtime whilst SDCH staff and

THIS issue we caught up with Sydney Grammar School’s Headmaster, Dr Richard Malpass, to learn more about the Fee Assistance program they offer.

Can you outline your vision of the School and what it offers to boys from all over Sydney?

Visionary statements tend to imply distant ambitions.

Instead, what I see every day here at Sydney Grammar School is a community of young men and their teachers who share a love of academic subjects, music, sport, art entirely for their own intrinsic values.

Last week I met with one of our Year 11 tutor groups. I asked the boys what they were passionate about at our School.

Political philosophy, rugby, jazz ensembles, sub-atomic physics, cross-country running, acapella singing and the rowing programme at the School were amongst the collective passions in this group of twelve boys. Each boy has his own personal hobbies and passions, but importantly he is quietly in admiration of the very contrasting talents of his close friends.

At Grammar, we champion diversity and a dedication to genuine scholarship and effort. As such, each boy will chart his own unique pathway through the School in order to discover and thrive in his own constellation of interests.

Can you explain what Sydney Grammar School’s Fee Assistance programme is, and the rationale behind it?

The Sydney Grammar School Fee Assistance programme is designed to ensure that any boy who would thrive at our School can do so, irrespective of his family’s financial circumstances.

We run a very exciting, fast-paced and highly aspirational academic, musical and co-curricular programme at Grammar.

We believe passionately in our educational approach and want to ensure that any boy who would thrive here can do so regardless of financial concerns.

What is the difference between the Fee Assistance programme and the School’s Scholarships programme?

The School awards up to 25 Academic and Music Scholarships every year, remitting up to 100% of the fees.

Some of these are means tested, but not all. Scholarships are awarded to boys who show exceptional academic or musical talent and potential. Fee Assisted places do not carry the same academic expectations, and may remit anything between 10 and 100% of the fees. Nevertheless, they are designed to help boys we believe would thrive at the School to be able to come regardless of their parents’ ability to pay.

How many boys do you have currently receiving Fee Assistance in the School?

There are over 40 boys receiving Fee Assistance at Sydney Grammar School at the moment, and this number grows every year. In addition, about 20 of our Academic Scholars would not be able to attend the School without some assistance with the fees.
