Beautiful fall skies and mild temperatures drew tens of thousands of festival goers to the Town of Islip's 44th annual Apple Fest at the Islip Grange on Saturday, October 26th. Southbound entertained with live music drawing a crowd of line dancers to the front of the stage, while others shopped, ate at the ever-popular food trucks or enjoyed watching their children smile on carnival rides. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by the members of the Islip Town Board. The event is presented by the Town of Islip, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a prosperous curmudgeon who believes that personal wealth is far more valuable than the happiness and comfort of others. With an infuriated “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge summates his feelings of Christmas tidings and charitable giving, but he’s forced to face his selfish ways when three ghosts on Christmas Eve lead him through his Past, Present, and Future. Thanks to their guidance, Scrooge recognizes his faults and greets Christmas morning with a cheerful “Happy Christmas” before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those who mean

A Day To Honor All Veterans
The month of November is a special time for the nation’s veterans. While Memorial Day honors fallen soldiers and service people, Veteran’s Day, which takes place each November, is an opportunity to commemorate the efforts of all who have been in the armed forces, with a special emphasis on living veterans. While people are encouraged to thank veterans throughout the year, Veteran’s Day is a particularly poignant time to show your appreciation for the men and women of the military.
Veteran’s Day takes place on November 11 and marks an important moment in history.
On November 11, 1918, World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” unofficially ended when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, took place between Germany and the Allied nations on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. World War I ended on paper when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Armistice Day became a federal holiday in the United
States in 1938. However, after subsequent wars, including World War II and the Korean War, veterans’ service organizations lobbied for Armistice Day to be revised so it would be more inclusive of all veterans. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to strike the word “Armistice” from the holiday’s name in favor of “Veterans.” Since then, November 11 has been known as “Veterans Day” and has honored veterans of all wars. Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October for roughly seven years under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which sought to ensure three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating certain national holidays on Mondays. But since November 11 bore such significance,
many states disapproved and continued to observe the holiday on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed legislation to return the observation of Veterans Day to November 11 beginning in 1978. Should the day fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes the holiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively, according to History.com.
The United States isn’t the only country to celebrate its veterans. Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and France also commemorate the veterans of World War I and II on or near November 11 as Remembrance Day or Remembrance Sunday.

Did You Know?
Scores of people insist that exercising with a partner is a great way to remain committed to a fitness regimen, and now research is beginning to support that assertion. A 2023 study from researchers in Japan published in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics found that exercising both alone and with a partner two or more times a week helped to lower risk of cognitive impairment, but the risk was decreased by a more significant margin among those who exercised with others.

Columbus Day Exploration
COLUMBUS DAY EXPLORATION - Students in Ms. Kennedy’s fifth grade social studies classes at Bayview Elementary School in the West Islip Union Free School District went on a scavenger hunt around the school to discover new and interesting facts about Christopher Columbus. They worked in teams of two and three in a race against time. The groups had to complete their fact sheets quickly as they searched for clues about the famous explorer. Sen. Martinez And Governor Hochul Announce Millions In Funding For Local After-School Programs
West Islip Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. has been awarded $3 million in grant funding as part of New York State’s Learning and Enrichment AfterSchool Program Supports (LEAPS) initiative, which supports new or ongoing after-school programs for children in high-need areas, Sen. Monica R. Martinez and Governor Kathy Hochul announced. The grants, which account for more than a third of the $8.92 million allocated to the Long Island region, will provide critical after-school services to students in the Bay Shore, Brentwood and Central Islip Union Free School Districts. The Central Islip program will receive $1 million, Bay Shore will be allocated $1.1 million, and Brentwood will receive $900,000. These funds will support educational enrichment and socialemotional development for local students, helping them reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom.
“After-school programs give students a space to keep growing, explore their interests, and connect with others outside the classroom,” said Sen. Martinez. “These investments ensure children in our community
have the support they need to thrive academically and emotionally. I’m thankful to West Islip

providing every child in its care with opportunities to succeed, and to Governor Hochul for helping make this funding possible to achieve that purpose.”
The LEAPS initiative, administered by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Division of Child Care Services, aims to support community-based after-school programs that offer academic enrichment, social-emotional wellness services, and mentorship opportunities. These programs are designed to help students meet academic and personal
goals while also addressing the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing safe and supportive environments after school, LEAPS helps students build confidence, improve relationships, and develop critical life skills that will serve them in the future.
Programs eligible for LEAPS grants must be licensed or seeking to become licensed as schoolage childcare providers and serve children in high-need school districts. Funding amounts are based on the licensed capacity of each program, with grants covering critical programming and operational costs.

Gestures anyone can embrace in support of veterans
Veterans Day is Novemeber 11. Community-wide events tend to be held on that day, but any day of the year is a good time to pay respect to veterans. On a local level, people can do much to thank veterans for their service and sacrifice.
· Provide a free restaurant meal. Offer to take out a veteran for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If you see a veteran eating in a restaurant, anonymously pay the bill for that person.
· Send care packages. Communities can gather resources and chip in to make care packages for veterans who live in town, and even to send to troops stationed elsewhere.
· Buy from veterans. Seek out veteran-owned businesses in the area, and then make purchases from their retail stores or utilize their services.
· Volunteer at a VA hospital. Spend time with veterans where they receive care for current health needs or past injuries suffered in combat.
· Participate in a parade. If your town hosts a Veterans Day parade, find out how you can volunteer or be a part of it. Oftentimes parade officials enable youth groups, such as high school marching bands or scouting troops, to participate in the parade.
· Write to a publication. Write an op-ed or highlight piece to submit to a local newspaper about veterans in the community. Mention local veterans who have unique stories, or speak about the importance of veterans to the community.
· Ask a veteran to speak. If you work in a school or a community center, ask veterans to share their experiences with area youth.
· Visit local memorials. Spend time visiting memorials nearby and paying homage to the veterans who devoted their time, or even their lives, to service.
To all our Veterans, We respect you, we thank you and we honor you today and always.
