Long Island Artists Living With Alzheimer’s Disease Featured In Art Exhibition At The Islip Arts Council

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center’s (ADRC) annual Art Expressions Art Exhibit will take place in collaboration with the Islip Arts Council in Bay Shore, New York during the month of September. A special reception recognizing the artists will be held on Friday, September 20th, at 1 pm at the Art Gallery located in the north end of Westfield Shopping Center, Bay Shore, NY, near Dick’s Sporting Goods in honor of World Alzheimer’s Days observed on September 21. This exhibition marks the culmination of a year-long art program featuring 150 Long Island artists who are either living at home or residing in a memory care community.

The Art Expressions Program, a cornerstone of ADRC, is a celebration of resilience, expression, and the enduring power of creativity. Each piece on display has been crafted by individuals living with dementia, demonstrating that artistic expression transcends memory loss and cognitive challenges.

The show not only provides a platform for these artists to share their work with the community but also raises awareness about dementia and the importance of a dementiafriendly community.

Carol Hartmann, Director of Programs, Training and Education shared that ADRC’s Art Expressions Program “… utilizes the healing power of art to evoke memories, emotions and connections.” Program participants attend weekly sessions at either ADRC’s East Islip location or in their memory care community. During their weekly session, the individual works on a piece of art based on a particular theme or technique.

ADRC’s trained facilitators tap into each person’s imagination instead of memory, focusing on remaining strengths instead of lost skills. Each piece of art created tells a story; through the exhibition, we aim to change perceptions about dementia and to celebrate the talents of those living with the disease.

Join us during the month of September to view the artwork at the Islip Arts Council. It is free and the gallery is open from 10am – 4pm most days. If you wish to celebrate our artists, plan to join us on Friday, September 20 at 1pm for an afternoon of art, community, and conversation. Witness the incredible work of our artists who, despite the challenges of dementia, continue to find beauty and meaning and express it through their creativity.

ADRC is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers FREE services and programs to families throughout Long Island. Our mission is to provide care, support, and educational programs for families in need, and to be advocates for local families who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. All funds raised, stay on Long Island to support caregivers and their families.

KIDS COLORING CONTEST!

This October, supporting breast cancer research is as easy as buying paint. Throughout the month, for every gallon of premium paint sold at Aboff’s Paint stores and online at aboffs.com, the company will generously donate a portion of the proceeds to support breast cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL).

The original Aboff’s Paints Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign raised over $10,000 for CSHL breast cancer research in 2012. In 2023, the two Long Island institutions renewed their partnership and raised over $40,000.

“Breast cancer awareness is near and dear to all of us here at Aboff’s,” said Aboff’s Paints owner and CSHL Corporate Advisory

Board member Matthew Aboff. “We are delighted to renew our partnership with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for October 2024 and hope to make this year’s campaign our most successful yet.” Family-owned and operated, Aboff’s Paints has been proudly serving Long Island and the New York region for 95 years. The knowledgeable team of paint experts leverage decades of experience, and with 32 convenient locations across Long Island, they’re on hand to accommodate any residential, commercial, or industrial painting project. The Autumnal Equinox

Each September, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the autumnal equinox, which marks the official beginning of fall. In the Southern Hemisphere, spring is arriving at this time.

Each year there are two equinoxes, the vernal and the autumnal (March and September, respectively). Shortly after the autumnal equinox, days begin getting shorter and the nights get longer.

The word equinox is from the Latin “aequi,” meaning “equal,” and “nox” or “night.” That means that during each equinox the hours of day and night are nearly equal in length across the planet. During the equinox, the part of the Earth that is closest to the sun is the equator, explains History.com. That helps make night and day equal in length.

The fall equinox and the first day of autumn arrives on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 08:44 A.M. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox occurs at the same moment worldwide.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Is Leading The Fight For Suicide Awareness And Prevention Here On Long Island

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a moment that serves as a powerful reminder that there are steps we all must take in looking out for loved ones, the people in our community, and those who have been impacted by this leading cause of death. Suicide continues to be an urgent public health matter with nearly 50,000 people dying by suicide and 1.6 million people attempting suicide in the United States in 2022 (the most current data available).

The American Foundation

for Suicide Prevention, a leader in this work, invites the public to join our growing movement and take action to save lives during this awareness month and beyond. It’s time to take one big step together.

Since 2002, millions of people have attended the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALKS in communities across the country, raising awareness and funds that go toward education programs, advocacy efforts, and

scientific research that reveals how we can save more lives.

By walking with others, we find comfort in knowing we are not alone, and that we are connected through great purpose to healing and support. So join us – as parents, neighbors, family members, classmates and colleagues – at our two Out of the Darkness Community Walks on Long Island, as we all take a step in the right direction: towards HOPE.

Our Out of the Darkness East End Long Island Community Walk will be

held on Sunday, September 22nd, beginning at 10:00 am in Smith Point County Park in Shirley. You can find out more information and register at //www.afsp.org/ longislandwalkeast.

Our Out of the Darkness Long Island Community Walk will be held on Sunday, October 27th, beginning at 10:00 am in Jones Beach Field #5 in Wantagh. You can find out more information and register at www.afsp.org/ longislandwalkwest.
