The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985.

Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients.

Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening.

Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more.

New Principal Appointed At Babylon Elementary

Babylon School District has named Danielle Flaumenhaft as Principal of Babylon Elementary School, effective July 1.

She replaces Travis Davey, who has taken a new administrative position within the Babylon School District.

Ms. Flaumenhaft comes to Babylon from the West Babylon School District, where she previously served as a literacy consultant. She also served

as an elementary principal and assistant principal in East Islip and Three Village school districts, respectively.

“I feel very fortunate to spend my day with such an amazing community,” Ms. Flaumenhaft said.

“From my first day, I was welcomed by everyone, and it is clear that this is a community that works together for the children who live and go to school here in Babylon.”

Ms. Flaumenhaft holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from SUNY Cortland and a master’s degree in international education and development from Boston University.

She additionally holds a Master of Science in literacy from Dowling College and an advanced graduate certificate in administration from SUNY Stony Brook.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), together with the Town of Babylon, will launch its nationwide Alzheimer’s walk at Babylon Town Hall (200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst) on Saturday, October 30, at 10:00 am. Long Islanders are invited to take park in the “Alzheimer’s Walk in The Park” and can register in advance by visiting www. afawalk.com.

Proceeds raised at the family-friendly event, which will also include health and wellness activities and

refreshments, will help support families affected

by Alzheimer’s disease through AFA’s programs, services, and research towards a cure.

Community service opportunities are available for students.

The Walk will take place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall, a firstin-the-nation park created specifically to give families a dementia-friendly place that is peaceful, scenic and provides educational information about dementia-related illnesses, caregiving, and support

services. It will serve as the kickoff to AFA’s national Alzheimer’s walk, which will take place throughout the month of November in communities across the country.

Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is showing off its green thumb with its student garden. The garden began last year as a part of the mentor program at the school.

The students led the task of getting the project started, and it has just taken off from there, according to Forest Avenue Principal Gayle Manchisi.

Each grade level has a different vegetable in the garden that was planted

in late May. The classes each watered, weeded and cared for their vegetable.

The project even pulled in families, who helped to harvest the vegetables on the weekends and during the summer months.

“We reached out to

families over the summer months to harvest some of the vegetables,” Manchisi said. “The cafeteria staff even got involved by bagging some of the harvested vegetables and handing them out

to families with bagged lunches over the summer.”

The school really wanted to involve the whole community in the project while also making it a learning experience for the students. For grades one

Catholic Health Good Samaritan Hospital & the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition Kick Off Breast Health Awareness Month Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, and the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition kicked off Breast Health Awareness Month with their annual Pink Flags Celebration.

The celebration was held at the Catholic Health Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan located at 111 Beach Drive in West Islip.

As part of the month long awareness event, pink flags have been placed throughout the hospital campus with tags available for purchase to honor a breast cancer survivor or in recognition of a loved one who has passed due to the disease. Donations are made to the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to support those diagnosed with breast cancer in a variety of ways, including assistance with bills, house cleaning, food, wigs, prosthesis and other free services.

“Good Samaritan Hospital has been a partner of the West Islip

Breast Cancer Coalition since our inception,” said West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition President Margaret Campise.

“When a need for breast health resources became apparent, the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition was developed along with the Breast Health Center at Good Samaritan. Both have worked hand-inhand since 1993 to support those diagnosed with and under treatment for breast cancer. These services are not only for residents in West Islip, but instead is for those throughout the south shore of Suffolk County.”

This year, another milestone in breast health was reached—the 10th Anniversary of Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center, located at 735 Montauk Highway in West Islip.

On Wednesday, September 8th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce for the second installation of their Wednesday’s on Wellwood celebration. The event closed North Wellwood

Avenue from John Street to Hoffman Avenue such that businesses, performers, and residents alike could interact with one another.

Said Legislator McCaffrey: “It is fantastic to see so many people enjoying the immense and ever growing business

community our Village has to offer. Lindenhurst is truly proving itself as a destination spot for people of all ages, and I could not be more proud. Great job by everyone involved in making this event a reality!”

WELLWOOD ON WEDNESDAYS - Attendees included the Lindenhurst Knights of Columbus, the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, the soon-to-open The Holy Black Trading Co., and many more.

The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com,

brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers

would cease brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped.

As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of beer,

or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher

gravity so they would keep and be available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations.

Such brewing restrictions were no longer necessary after refrigeration became commonplace

and made it possible to brew beer year-round, but there’s still a strong chance that steins being hoisted during this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will be filled with Märzenstyle beers.

A Multi-Class Regatta Captain Rick Latorre and his crew aboard Dark Star won line honors and came in first place in the Spinnaker Division. Eric Winberry and crew aboard Aleboat came in second place. The Non Spinning Division was won by a great sailing performance

by Gary Sebouhian and his crew aboard S/V Pandemonium.

Second place boat was Merry Ann and crew followed by Ed Anderson’s boat At Last.

The Cruising Division was won by Chris Demmarco who sailed single handedly and was the only boat in his division to complete the race in such light wind.

The Multi hull boats were sailing all over the racecourse looking for wind and was won by Kim Schaefer and his crew on the Trimaran Trillium.

Their competition was close behind aboard the Trimaran Getting There.

There were a total of 15 boats racing in the four classes.

Then The Celebration….

The Soirée Directly following the Regatta and set to a stunning background with views to the Robert Moses Bridge, this year’s celebration was presented by York Analytical Laboratories at the Long Island Yacht Club.

Celebrants were treated to live music by the everpopular No Request Band along with tasty seafood delights served up by Bill and Maureen Zeller of Captree Clam.

Under beautiful blue skies, Chuck Westfall of Thatch Island Oysters shucked hundreds of fresh Great South Bay oysters and guests dined on tasty treats from Coastal Kitchen, Mary Carroll’s, Ristorante Gemelli, Village Meat Market and Southside Fish and Clam. As they raised funds to support the organization’s three core programs, guests enjoyed an exclusive tasting of beautifully aged armagnacs and cognac with local importer Larry Reiter of Columbus Wine and Spirits. Others had their fortunes told by the Collective Consciousness of Oakdale.

The Yacht Club’s grounds were decorated with a wide selection of native trees, bushes and plants donated by Long Island Natives. The plants were repurposed to build a native garden in Amityville’s Nautical Park after the event.

Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta was dedicated in memory of former Babylon Village Mayor Ralph A. Scordino

who sadly passed away in October 2020. Mayor Scordino was a longtime supporter of the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta and an avid supporter of Save The Great South Bay, 501(c)3. Current Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams spoke of her predecessor’s love of the Bay and commitment to the environment.

Congratulations to grand prize winner Jay Price who won the 9’ 6” Paddleboard donated by Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddle Board.

The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta & Soirée took place on Saturday, September 18 on the Great South Bay followed immediately by what is quickly becoming an annual favorite celebration at the Long Island Yacht Club benefiting local environmental non-profit Save The Great South Bay. One of the largest sailboat races on the Great South Bay, the Mayor’s Cup is organized by the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association in association with the South Bay Cruising Club. Returning Race Committee Chair John Davis oversaw the 7.8 nautical mile course which proved a tough battle for the skippers and their crews.

The light and variable winds, that changed direction multiple times throughout the race, made for very difficult conditions to keep the boats sailing.
