WATER SAFETY INITIATIVE

In partnership with End Drowning Now, the Town of Babylon has launched a crucial summer safety initiative to raise awareness about water safety. At a recent press conference, Councilman Terence McSweeney emphasized the importance of education and preventive measures to protect children, who are at the highest risk of drowning.

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers homeowners the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, a fantastic opportunity to save money while making your home more eco-friendly. You can claim a tax credit of up to $3,200 for qualifying energy-efficient improvements installed on or after January 1, 2023.

So, what does this mean for you? In simple terms, for every dollar you spend on qualified energy-efficient improvements, you can reduce your tax liability, up to the specified limit. However, keep in mind that these upgrades must be new products and materials that meet specific energy-efficiency standards to qualify.

Exterior doors that meet applicable standards can qualify for the energy tax credit. You can claim 30% of the project cost, up to $250 per door, with a total limit of $500.

Upgrade to energy-efficient windows to not only reduce your energy bills but also claim tax credits. Homeowners can receive 30% of project costs, up to $600, in tax credits.

The energy tax credit allows homeowners to recover 30% of the costs, up to $1,200, for improving home insulation. This credit can come from attic insulation, wall insulation, or exterior insulation that is placed behind the siding of your home.

If you are looking to take advantage of these tax credits, Unified Home Remodeling has Energy Star approved products and installers to ensure you get the most bang for your buck.

PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems.

“Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold

onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations.

“Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they

get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.”

To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety

guidelines:

• Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air.

• All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from

floating away.

• To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash.

• NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an

overhead power line. Report it by contacting PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue. To see a video of metallic balloons coming into contact with electrical wires, visit https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=jxgGYDccsQ4

NYS Comptroller’s Report Shows Babylon IDA Is Creating Jobs, Delivering For Local Economy

A recent report by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli highlights the significant contributions the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has made to the local economy. According to the 2024 Performance Report on New York State’s Industrial Development Agencies (IDAs), which summarized data for fiscal year 2022, the Babylon IDA’s 173 active projects had a total value of over $1.75 billion. Together, these projects created nearly 7,500 new jobs in the town

“The Comptroller’s report underscores the critical role IDAs play in fostering economic growth,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “We are committed to continuing our efforts in attracting and supporting businesses

that bring valuable jobs and opportunities to our community while ensuring accountability and transparency in our operations.”

According to the Comptroller’s report, New York’s local IDAs supported 4,320 active projects across the state in 2022, with a record total value of $132 billion, marking a $5 billion increase from 2021. These projects are estimated to create over 213,000 jobs and retain an additional 224,000 positions, reflecting the vital role IDAs play in local economic development. The report also indicates that IDA projects collectively received nearly $2 billion in tax exemptions, with property tax exemptions comprising $1.7 billion of this total. Payments in lieu of taxes (PILOT) amounted to approximately $854

million, resulting in net tax exemptions of about $1.1 billion. Furthermore, downstate regions, including Long Island, accounted for a significant portion of these net tax exemptions, demonstrating the high level of economic activity and investment facilitated by IDAs in these areas.

The Babylon IDA is a significant part of this positive economic growth, contributing to job creation and growth of the long-term tax base within Babylon Town. IDA projects have not only created numerous permanent jobs, but have also provided temporary construction jobs, bolstering local employment during project development phases.

The 173 active projects have benefited from $39.4 million in tax exemptions

and $22.2 million in PILOTs, resulting in a net tax exemption of $17.2 million. The IDA’s efforts have retained 7,156 jobs while adding more than 6,200 positions. Before the IDA’s involvement, there were an estimated 7,156 full-time equivalent jobs; this number has increased

to 15,200, resulting in a net gain of 7,491 jobs.

“This agency remains dedicated to enhancing the local economy by supporting sustainable projects that meet the needs of our community and grow our future tax base,” Dolan added. “We will continue to work closely with businesses, our partners in local government, and residents to ensure that our initiatives provide maximum, long-standing benefits for our Town and its communities.”
