Legislator McCaffrey Recognizes Joanne Marquardt Of The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition

During the November 19th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, legislators paused to recognize nonprofit organizations’ volunteers for their dedication to the betterment of our communities. Serving as Legislator McCaffrey’s honoree from the 14th Legislative District was Joanne Marquardt, a Board Member and a Research Advocate for the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. Joanne, a 20-year survivor of breast cancer and a 13-year survivor of colon cancer, is a retired science teacher and determined advocate for breast cancer research and access to care for those in treatment. Her advocacy began in 2009 with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition and transitioned to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition in

2020. As a Board Member she participated in fund raising to support the services provided to those in treatment. Since 2017 she has served informally as an advocate consultant with several breast cancer laboratories at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In that capacity she provides the patient/

advocate perspective in research and grant proposals. She also serves as the Long Island Field Coordinator for the National Breast Cancer Coalition and has also served multiple times as a Consumer Reviewer in the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.

Babylon’s Saffron United Pipe Band Celebrates Their 62nd Anniversary - Supports Our Veterans

Saffron United Pipe Band recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary, while also supporting our veterans with performances at Honor Flight Long Island and Babylon Village Veteran’s Day Parade.

Babylon’s own, Saffron United Pipe Band, led by Pipe Major Bob Farrell, recently

celebrated their 62nd anniversary. The anniversary was celebrated at the AOH Hall / Irish Cultural Center here in Babylon Village at the 62nd annual Piper’s Ball. Recently, the band was featured in two veteran events. The band performed at Islip MacArthur Airport for the return of our military

veterans from Washington, DC aboard Honor Flight Long Island. Pipe Major Farrell said, “it’s a privilege to perform for those men and women that return home from spending their day in our Nation’s capital”. The Honor Flight organization offers veterans a full day in Washington,

On November 11th, Saffron United Pipe Band took part in the Babylon

Village Veteran’s Day Parade. The annual parade, hosted by Babylon’s American Legion Post 94, was very well attended by village residents, elected officials and many school bands and local organizations. Pipe Major Farrell said, “participating in this parade, in our hometown village of

Babylon, is our way to giving back and to say thank you to all our veterans”.

Saffron United Pipe Band was founded in 1962 at the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America, Suffolk County’s St. Patrick’s Division 2 in Babylon, Long Island. The band is celebrating their 62nd anniversary in 2024.

Getting Into The Holiday Spirit

Denise Heegan did an amazing job ensuring the North Babylon community kicked off the holiday season with the festive lamppost decorating event. As an Ambassador for the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Society, she coordinated the decoration of over 80 light poles alongside her four children. This initiative gave residents a chance to start or continue their family tradition of enhancing the beauty of

the community.

Councilman Terence McSweeney who chairs the Town of Babylons beautification committee extended his thanks to Denise and the entire Heegan family for their tireless efforts and for continuing their family tradition, which has also turned into many families in the North Babylon community tradition.

McSweeney added that since inducting Denise as an ambassador, “she

hit the ground running and continues to impress me with her positive attitude and love for the community.” Town, County, and State elected officials lent a hand including Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Terence McSweeney, Councilman Anthony Manetta, Legislator Tom Donnelly, Assemblyman Michael Durso, and Assemblymanelect Kwani O’Pharrow.

The Average Individual Is Retiring Earlier Than Many People Might Expect

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Dwight Gooden & Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Team Up With Long Islanders To Strike Out Alzheimer’s Disease

New York baseball legend Dwight Gooden teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) to help strike out Alzheimer’s disease at AFA’s annual Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park. The walk raised approximately $50,000 to support AFA’s programs, services, and research projects.

Services supported by the walk proceeds include the AFA Helpline, caregiver support groups, and educational programs, as well as research toward better treatment and a cure. AFA funds research

across the country and around the world, including on Long Island at NYU Langone HospitalLong Island, the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and Stony Brook University.

“AFA is grateful to Dwight Gooden, our supporters, and sponsors for helping to make a difference in the battle against Alzheimer’s disease,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO.

“The funds and awareness raised through this event will provide help today and hope for the future

for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.”

Dwight Gooden, AFA’s honorary Alzheimer’s ambassador for the Walk, cut the ribbon to start the walk, threw out a ceremonial first pitch, and talked about the impact that help and support have for someone going through challenges, encouraging those caring for loved ones with dementia not to go through this journey alone.

The walk took place at AFA’s Respite Care Relief Park, located within Eisenhower Park

in East Meadow. AFA’s Respite Care Relief Park is an educational and recreational dementiafriendly place where caregivers can feel comfortable bringing their loved one with dementia to relax and enjoy a peaceful outdoor setting, while also gaining helpful educational information. Individuals who could not attend the walk but would like to support the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America can do so by visiting www.alzfdn.org/ donate.
