The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is offering art classes for children in grades one through five, to be held at the Babylon Town Hall Annex, 281 Phelps Lane, Room 15, North Babylon.

Learn to Draw with Art Teacher Amy begins on Tuesday, May 3rd, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. and will run for five weeks. The cost of this class is $63 and includes all supplies.

Children are instructed using a step-by-step approach to drawing. They will learn to draw various subject matter, including portraits, landscapes, still life, animals and master art works. The children will experiment with different mediums, such as chalk pastels, oil pastels, watercolors, markers and colored pencils. They will learn color theory, art history and elements of art.

An East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation resident recently celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends and with the help of a local legislator and councilman. Esther Cohen, born on April 6th, 1917, was joined by Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga and Islip Councilman Steven Flotterton, who honored her with a proclamation and citation, respectively, to recognize her life’s accomplishments.

Mrs. Cohen has dedicated the past several decades to health and exercise, a move she attributes to her long and healthy life.

Mrs. Cohen was born in Hoboken, NJ, and moved to Bronx, NY, with her family when she was a teenager.

In 1936, Esther was married to her husband, Abe Cohen, and the couple continued to live in New York City until moving to Bay Shore, in 1956.

The couple was happily married for 72 years before her husband passed away in 2008.

Esther and her husband started going to the gym together in 1976 when Esther was 59 and Abe was 65. Since then, Esther had been going to the gym every morning, participating in various types of workouts, seven days a week for nearly 40

When Esther was 96 she slipped and broke her pelvis but was able to fully recover and walk again.

Then, when she was 98, Esther endured through a very risky open heart triple bypass surgery.

Her desire to spend more time with her family made the decision for the risky surgery simple, but her physical strength is what she used to make a full recovery.

In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, students at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been reading and celebrating poetry during their class time in

the library.

Fifth-graders created a Poetry Walk, writing their favorite works in chalk on the school’s sidewalk, on April 13th. The students shared some of their favorite poems with the

Santapogue community.

The sidewalk was chosen as the prime location so other students could see the poems on their way to or from school.

PASTA DINNER HELD - The 8th New York District Knights of Columbus in Suffolk County recently held its 18th annual Pasta Dinner to support the Life Center of Long Island. This year’s event was held at Our Lady of Grace Parish in West Babylon on Sunday, April 10th. The four councils in the District worked all day with the staff of the Life Center to host a record-breaking 410 guests for a delicious pasta dinner and impressive Chinese Auction, consisting of beautiful gift baskets and prizes. Working together, the Knights of Columbus and the Life Center raised approximately $20,000.

The guest speaker of the event was Al Barbarino, a Lay Franciscan, and Brother Knight from Council #7220 in East Rockaway.
