Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. 40 Chapters Nationally, LI Chapter in Garden City www.CrohnsColitisFoundation.org/chapters/longisland/ This Foundation hopes to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of those children and adults affected by these diseases. They are currently looking for teammates to become a part of their Team Challenge Program, a fundraising and endurance training program. This is a great way to meet others who are fighting against Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Joining the team can help you stay motivated and inspired, while helping the foundation get closer to cures! Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. The Gala was created by Keith Hart to raise funds for charity by showcasing offerings from different businesses.
