Board Of Education Honors Champion Athletes

Amazing athletic achievement was on the agenda at the East Islip School District’s April 16 board of education meeting, honoring East Islip High School’s champion ice hockey players and swimmers.

First, four members of the combined Connetquot/East Islip boys varsity swimming and diving team – Brayden Black, Carter Jones, Jack Milligan and Max Schwalm – were recognized for winning second place overall in the Suffolk County League 1 championships.

Empire State Development Announces Completion Of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 Million Expansion On Long Island

Empire State Development (ESD) recently announced the completion of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 million facility expansion in Islandia. Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit organization that utilizes therapeutic equine programs to promote growth, learning, and healing for children and adults with disabilities.

Supported by a $600,000 capital grant from Empire State Development, recommended by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council, the expansion will boost its capacity for job training, workforce preparedness, and internship programs. These services will provide crucial skills and support that empowers these individuals to overcome employment barriers and achieve greater independence and success in their lives.

Empire State Development President CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, “Pal-OMine’s expansion is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it’s a catalyst for change that empowers our most vulnerable citizens to lead fulfilling lives and contribute to a more inclusive economy. By investing in innovative programs that deliver essential vocational training and support services, we are unlocking the potential of these individuals and fortifying the social and economic fabric of our society.”

desire to learn viable job skills. Working with our horses instills a newfound sense of confidence and self-worth, which serves as a foundation for their personal and professional growth journey.”

Since its inception in 1995, Pal-O-Mine has been at the forefront of using horses to facilitate growth, learning, and healing, serving over 400 individuals weekly. The programs offer personalized support and training to high-risk youth and adults with disabilities, aiming to increase participants’ independence, community integration, and economic security. The expansion has transformed the facility, creating nearly 5,000 square feet of enhanced space to better serve its participants. The project involved the renovation of two existing structures to ensure ADA compliance, accessibility, and safety for all individuals. Additionally, a new 2,000-square-foot prefabricated building has been constructed, providing much-needed space for expanded programming and services.

The acquisition of new equipment has enhanced the center’s capacity to deliver equine-assisted therapy services, workforce training, and internship programs. By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience on the farm, participants develop a broad range of vocational and life skills. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, the Farm facilitates internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities for program participants. The expansion and enhancement of these initiatives helps equip students with the tools and support necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve success in the workforce and beyond.

Long Island Town Supervisors Advocate For Regional Shellfish Hatchery Project Will Improve Water Quality & Provide Economic Benefits

Together with a coalition of Nassau and Suffolk County Town Supervisors, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is calling on state leaders to include funding for a Regional Shellfish Hatchery in the state budget. The initiative seeks to preserve Long Island’s maritime heritage and bolster shellfish stocks throughout New York, which will in turn improve local water quality and provide regional economic benefits.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is a leader in sustainability, as our existing shellfish hatchery has been instrumental in enhancing the local shellfish population and filtering pollutants from our coastal waters,” Supervisor

Saladino said. “Through collaboration with neighboring towns and state support for the Regional Shellfish Hatchery, we can extend these benefits across Long Island and beyond, ensuring a cleaner, healthier marine ecosystem for all.”

Town Supervisors from across Long Island have joined these advocacy efforts, including Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Riverhead Town Supervisor Timothy C. Hubbard, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico, Smithtown Town Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim, Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin, Jr., Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Z. Moore, Huntington Town Supervisor Edmund J. Smith, Southhold Town Supervisor Albert J. Krupski, Jr., Islip Town Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter, and North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer S. DeSena.

The proposed hatchery, to be located in Islip’s Hecksher Park, will serve as a hub for shellfish recruitment and resource enhancement in the Great South Bay. It will serve multiple purposes to meet the needs of the growing aquaculture community, promote economic growth, and ensure the continuation of the tradition of farming in the Great South Bay. The Town of Islip’s current facility is rapidly aging and has been negatively impacted by climate change.

USPS "Stamp out Hunger" Annual Food Drive

May 11th

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the USPS is having its annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive and with the help of the West Islip community, they are excited and looking forward to collecting twice as much food as last year.

Customers should

look for the brown paper bags that will be delivered in the coming days, or they can come to the post office to pick one up in person.

Customers can leave the bags of donated canned/ boxed goods next to their mailbox or where the carrier can see it so they can pick it up.

The USPS and the West Islip Post Office would like to thank the community in advance because only you can make this a successful event and help the USPS provide food for those in need.
