North Shore Animal League America Conducting Adoptions By Appointment Only Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only.

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff.

In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes.

During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only.

While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time.

Northport-East Northport Raises Over $71,000 For St. Baldrick’s Northport-East Northport students, teachers, staff and community members gathered at Northport High School’s St. Baldrick’s event on March 6 to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research and treatment.

As of March 13, the

community raised more than $71,000 for the cause and pledged to raise more than $100,000 next year. Top teams included East-Northport Middle School Bald Tigers, NMS Bald Eagles and Bellerose Fuzzballs.

As donations poured in,

hundreds of supporters walked on stage to have their heads shaved.

Those who did received a hand-knitted hat and St. Baldrick’s t-shirt to forever honor the cause to fight childhood cancer.

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!

Passover is a celebration of the liberation of Jews from Egyptian slavery.

Along with Sukkot and Shavuot, Passover is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals that feature agricultural offerings and several unique mitzvot.

The seder, an elaborate meal that customarily takes place on the first night of the holiday, is

at the center of Passover celebrations.

According to ReformedJudaism. org, “seder” means “order” and refers to the 15 separate steps that are taken in traditional order as expressed in the book “Haggaddah.”

by Lent, a weeklong period of reflection, prayer and

repentance.

The days immediately prior to Easter are commonly referred to as Holy Week. This encompasses Palm Sunday and lasts through Holy Thursday (the day of The Last Supper), Good Friday (when Jesus was crucified and placed in the tomb), and Holy Saturday (the 40-hour-long vigil that the followers of Jesus Christ held after his death and burial).

On Easter Sunday, four women, including Mary Magdalene, went to Christ’s tomb to anoint his body with spices and oils. They found the tomb was empty and were met with an angel who told them that Jesus had been raised from the dead. A biblical account in John 20:14-16 indicates that Mary Magdalene was the first to speak with the risen Jesus. She mistakes Jesus for a gardener and says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary!”

She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” In regard to his apostles Simon and Peter who were the first to see the risen Christ.

Easter is a time of joy and celebration, and a great opportunity for Christians to immerse themselves in their faith.

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. Easter Sunday dinners are a tradition for many families, and a great number of those families enjoy lamb on Easter Sunday. Lamb is a significant symbol of Easter because Jesus is often referred to as the “Lamb of God.” Additionally, lamb was sacrificed during the Jewish Passover and subsequently became symbolic of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

This year it may be possible to combine a love for lamb with a love for grilling. ‘Athletes Helping Athletes’ Visit TJL A large group of Harborfields High School students could be seen walking from Taylor Avenue in Greenlawn to Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School on Jan. 30 to visit classrooms and talk to students about important life skills.

The high schoolers are part of the school’s leadership program, Athletes Helping Athletes, and for the past few years have taken an interest in preparing elementary school students for middle school and

beyond. Three times a year, the selected students go from classroom to classroom to teach the younger students about civility, leadership, sportsmanship, bullying and the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

In Ms. Weber’s class, high school students Caitlin Fealy, Sammy Lustig, Thomas Sullivan and Matt Torres told personal sportsmanship stories, whereas in Ms. Kraham’s class, elementary school students played out different sportsmanship

scenarios.

Athletes Helping Athletes advisers Robert Franco and Daniel Greening said that each of the high school students are nominated by their respective coaches and are chosen based on leadership goals and their commitment to remain drug and alcohol free.

“They act as leaders and role models to the younger students that are going into the middle school,” Mr. Franco said.

Students Create Cornmeal Canyons Cornmeal can be used for more than just baking.

Students at Harley Avenue Primary Schoåol learned that first hand when they explored how continuous rainfall can erode land to create canyons.

Students in Mrs. Schombs’ and Mrs. Miller’s classes joined Mrs. Testa in the science lab on March 3 and learned about

natural erosion and the creation of canyons, like the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Following a short video, students tested their theory – that rainfall is powerful enough to excavate land – using a tightly-packed ball of cornmeal, made to mimic the earth’s surface.

After dripping water over their model, the students recorded the results, which

included cracks and large divots in the cornmeal where the water had landed.

The activity engaged students in a minds-on and hands-on science task relevant to everyday life and was designed to expand the students’ understanding of engineering physical, earth and life sciences.

Due to the current circumstances, most events have either been cancelled or postponed.

Northport Early Childhood Program Lottery Open Northport High School’s Early Childhood Education program has 16 available openings for the 2-Year-Old Toddler Program for the 2020-21 school year. The district will be holding a lottery for Northport-East Northport residents to fill these spots. Each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying toddler development twice a week.

The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers.

In order to qualify for this program, toddlers must be 2 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2020 and families must be residents of the Northport-East Northport School District. There is no cost for the program.

Note: You can use goodquality, low-salt kosher chicken stock cubes or bouillon powder, but the recipe above for homemade broth is recommended.

For the dumplings: 7 ounces medium matzo meal (about 8 matzo sheets, ground up) 3 eggs 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 3 grindings of black pepper 2 pinches of salt First, make the broth.

Put the carcass in a large pot and cover with about 21⁄2 quarts of water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the vegetables, herbs and peppercorns, return to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Strain, reserving the broth.

Make the dumplings by

mixing all the dumpling ingredients together, then knead until you have a smooth dough, adding a little water if necessary.

Cover and let rest for at least 3 hours.

Using your hands, form the mixture into balls the size of apricots.

To put it all together, bring the chicken broth up to simmering point.

Drop in the dumplings and continue simmering, covered, for 30 minutes.

If you don’t have a chicken carcass, boil a whole chicken for the soup and use the meat in other dishes. Traditionally, a boiling fowl from a kosher butcher would be used.

Health note: This is the famous “Jewish penicillin” beloved of every mother and grandmother. It’s not an old wives’ tale; there’s good scientific evidence that it contains vitamins, minerals and other natural chemicals that are antibacterial and immune-boosting.

In addition, nutrients and valuable plant chemicals are extracted from the vegetables and herbs during the cooking process, most of which end up as active ingredients in the finished soup.

Passover is a Jewish festival that commemorates the story of Exodus. In that story, ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt, and men, women and children of Jewish heritage celebrated that liberation during Passover, a seven or eight day festival that is one of the more widely observed Jewish holidays.

Passover celebrations begin on the 15th day of the Jewish month of Nisan.

That day typically falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. One of the symbols of Passover is matzo, an unleavened flatbread made from flour and water. Though matzo is an enduring symbol of Passover, that does not mean it cannot be enjoyed at other times of the year.

In fact, those who want to celebrate their Jewish heritage or even those who simply want to experience Jewish culture can enjoy matzo throughout the year. Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and the state’s largest private employer, today announced that it would delay payments with zero percent interest for a minimum of 60 days for those patients who receive medical services and have been financially impacted with the loss of a job, lost wages or other financial distress resulting from the

COVID-19 pandemic.

Northwell has been on the front lines and among the first US health systems to test and treat for COVID-19.

The health system is taking this financial step to help alleviate the economic pressure and stress so many families are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

“We are first and

foremost an organization committed to the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Northwell Executive Vice President and Chief Business Strategy Officer Richard Miller. “We live and work here too and are cognizant of the impact the virus is having on people’s physical, mental and financial health. What to look out for You receive a call from what looks like PSEG Long Island on your caller ID.

The caller threatens to shut off your service and demands an immediate payment by pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin.

The caller informs you that you require a new meter and demands a deposit before the installation can occur.

You’re given a phone number to call back that, when called, may sound similar to PSEG Long Island’s automated call system.

PSEG Long Island will never ask for a pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. Scammers ask

for them because they are untraceable.

What to do Hang up. Do not provide any personal or account information.

Call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025. Never call any number the scammer gives you.

What PSEG Long Island will and won’t discuss over the phone A genuine PSEG Long Island representative will ask to speak to the Customer of Record.

If that person is available, the representative will explain why they are calling

and provide the account name, address and current balance.

If the Customer of Record is not available, the PSEG Long Island representative will not discuss the account at all and ask that a message be left for the Customer of Record to call 1-800-4900025.

PSEG Long Island also cautions customers to beware of scam emails that appear to be bills from the utility. These emails request personal information that could lead to identity theft.
