9 1 1 VETERANS - On Saturday, October 8, 2022, the Knights of Columbus Assumption Council 5252 East Islip, held its second annual car show at St. Mary’s Church to benefit Long Islands 911 Veterans. Grand Knight Steve Foray along with 30 Plus Assumption Council Brothers, pictured above, were blessed with fabulous weather. There were about 100 cars and over 500 spectators throughout the day. The Knights and sponsors raised over $10,000 that will go directly to benefit the 911 VETERANS. Assumption Council would like to Salute all the veterans and say a heartfelt Thank you for their service.

Scouts BSA Troops 43 And 430 Of Bay Shore Attended The North Babylon Lions Club Annual Turkaree Campout

NORTH BABYLON LIONS CLUB ANNUAL TURKAREE CAMPOUT -

Scouts and Scouters of BSA Troops 43 and 430 both chartered by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore had a great time at the Annual Turkaree Campout November 4, 5 & 6, 2022, hosted by the North Babylon Lions Club as a fun event for youth groups and a food drive to provide for families in need. The members of Scouts BSA Troops 43 & 430 enjoyed the event and the opportunity to camp with and enter competitions with Scouts BSA Troops as well as other youth groups from various organizations throughout the Townships of Babylon and Islip. The event highlight is the opportunity for the youth to showcase their Outdoor (scouting) skills especially related to the campsite and meal and dessert preparation, while they enjoy the great outdoors. The Scouts of Troops 43 & 430 are thankful for their charter organization AMVETS Post 76, and the Scouters that make these weekends and the year-round program in the Bay Shore Brightwaters area possible. If you know of a youth between the ages of 11 and 17 that enjoy the outdoors and learning new skills through traditional BSA scout units, you can reach out to Troops 43 (for the Boys) & 430 (for the Girls) to arrange to visit or learn more about the program. Bravo Foxtrot United Veterans Inc.

Bravo Foxtrot United Veterans Inc. is a new non-profit charitable organization that provides aid to our local homeless veterans. They provide

temporary housing as well as holistic therapy, in hopes to ease their transition for when they reunite with their loved ones and communities.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.

“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

As home to 72,000 military veterans, Suffolk County has more veterans than any of the other 61 counties in New York State. With Veterans Day occurring in November, this month is a fitting time to recognize local organizations that serve the veterans community, such as our Charity of the Month, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide spectrum of assistance to Suffolk County veterans in respect to affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services. This column focuses on MHAW’s permanent housing for veterans with support services.

chronic illness, promote a healthy and safe environment, promote wellbeing, prevent mental health and substance use disorders and to help veterans continue to live in their communities in a manner consistent with their abilities and goals. MHAW aims to purchase and rehab additional homes in the future.

“We owe our veterans deep gratitude and must ensure that they have the opportunity to thrive,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “They cannot do that without safe and consistent housing. It is an honor to be part of this program.”

Neighbor Pets’ Place

In October of 2021, MHAW celebrated the opening of three new homes, adding to their capacity to offer permanent residences for formerly homeless veterans. The three houses became available through Suffolk County’s “Housing Our Homeless Heroes Act” where abandoned properties are transferred to non-profit organizations that serve at-risk and homeless veterans. The initiative is funded through New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s “Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.”

Ashanta Murray, a Navy veteran of eight years with three young children, is now living in one of the homes. “I was so proud to serve in the Navy – and to come home and try to find housing was such a struggle,” Ms. Murray said. “To serve your country and come home to face homelessness should never happen. This home for me and my children has been such a blessing.”

Aside from a new home, veterans receive such support services as employment and training opportunities, counseling, peer support, independent living skills training, linkage to primary healthcare, substance use disorder treatment, mental healthcare, childcare and other benefits.

Through the efforts of MHAW along with community and government partners, Long Island has made significant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years. “We have reached a point where when a veteran is homeless, they do not remain homeless for very long,” said Ms. Merlo. “We are proud to have helped to support this trend through our affordable and permanent housing work as well as our focus on employment opportunities and support services to veterans and their families.”

Library is partnering with Family Service League this holiday season to collect toys for local families with children who are experiencing financial hardship. We are collecting new, unwrapped toys for children ages birth through 18. Toys should be priced between $5 and $10 dollars.

November 21st through December 30th – Mitten Tree – Help us keep the community warm this winter season. Please bring in new or handmade

items such as mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to hang on our Mitten tree located in the Children’s Department. Donations will be given to a local agency who can distribute the items to those in need.
