DISPLAYS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER:

Outside Showcase – This month our display case will feature information provided by the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The group provides support and direct services to patients living within the Township of Islip dealing with breast or other

women’s cancer.

Inside Showcase – The Islip town Fire and EMS Museum and Education Center will be displaying an exhibit regarding the rich history of the volunteer Fire and EMS agencies serving the Town of Islip for over 125 years.

Gallery – Lynn Logan Roselli is a contemporary artist who will be displaying her art work for the public to enjoy.

ADULT PROGRAMS:

through October 31st –Drive For Families In Need – Help us give back to the community by donating items for families in need all over Long Island. Nonperishable food items, baby formula, diapers and wipes are always in demand. These items will be made into Blessing Boxes that will be distributed by Branches Long Island.

November 6th - Sunday at 2:00 P.M. – The Friends Performing Arts Series presents Shtrykov-Tanaka Duo – Clarinetist Maksim Shtrykov and pianist Misuzu Tanaka will be performing. Both are graduates of The Julliard School and met in 2012. They are avid chamber music collaborators.

November 7th – Monday at 2:00 P.M. – Medicare Made Easy – (BBA142) –Marie Cantone, a licensed insurance professional will help you navigate the issues involved in insurance planning for people who are eligible for Medicare.

The members of Scouts BSA Troop 43 are always happy to assist with community events and are grateful to the Village of Brightwaters for all their support of the scouting programs in the community. Scouts BSA Troops 43 & 430 charted by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore provide a year-round program for the 6th grade and up. They can also help connect families with youth from K-5th grade to the local cub scout opportunities. Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.

Boating Safety Tips Just Right For Fall Boating

Fall boating season has arrived, and with it come different types of risks that cold water and air temperatures bring. Here are three boating safety tips from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water just right for leaf peeping season.

A float plan is needed: A float plan is as simple as telling a responsible person where you will be going and when you’ll be back. With fewer other boats on the water (potential Good samaritans) after Labor Day, a float plan ensures rescuers will be notified if you ever fail to check back in after your outing. Additionally, leaving a note under your vehicle’s windshield wiper at the launch ramp can help

trigger an alarm.

Got a way back into the boat? Falls overboard may be ranked #5 on the 2021 U.S. Coast Guard’s list of the “Top Five Primary Accident Types” with 273 accidents, but they also led the most number of deaths (170 fatal), as well as more fatalities than all the other 4 top accident types combined (#1 collision with vessel-1226 accidents/31 fatal; #2 collision with fixed object508 accidents/43 fatal; #3 flooding/swamping-461 accidents/55 fatal; #4 grounding-308 accidents/23 fatal). Your boarding ladder should be functional and accessible as cold water can quickly sap strength. If your boat doesn’t have a built in-ladder, a compact

emergency ladder or even a looped line attached to a cleat, pre-rigged with foothold loops every few inches and hung over the transom, can substitute.

For life jackets, camo styling hides a danger: Dark green, tan and black camo patterns are remarkable at doing exactly as designed, blending you into your surroundings. However, that’s not a benefit if you happen to be floating in the water and rescuers are searching. If possible, make their job easier and wear a life jacket with high visibility. For smaller vessels and paddlers, leaf peeping season is also a really good time to secure the life jacket to your body – that includes using buckle snaps.

BOATING SAFETY TIPS - Falls overboard can be deadly, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Something as simple as a rope with foothold loop, attached to cleats, can also easily function as an emergency boarding ladder.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Kicks-Off Annual Mags & Munchies Program

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) is proud to announce that their annual Mags & Munchies Fall Product Program is now open and will run through November 16, 2022. The Mags & Munchies program is a financial literacy program where Girl Scouts sell various products, including magazines, and delicious nuts, snacks, and chocolates. The program presents Girl Scouts with an opportunity to give back to their communities—while providing girls with entrepreneurial, goalsetting, and decisionmaking skills in preparation for the start of the Girl Scout cookie season.

“We are incredibly excited for this year’s Mags & Munchies program,” said Tammy Severino, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, President and CEO. “Through this program, Girl Scouts will learn invaluable entrepreneurial, digital marketing, and e-commerce skills. The program provides girls with new opportunities to learn important business skills while still having fun!”

Products can be ordered in person from a Girl Scout

or picked up at local community locations during the Booth Sale season beginning October 21st. Girl Scouts can also share a link to their personalized shop, where customers can choose to have products shipped right to their homes. Girls will build an online shop, create an avatar that looks just like them, and record a message for their virtual likeness to deliver to friends and family. There are also many other ways for girls to engage in the program, including uploading their own personal videos, earning virtual rewards for their avatars, and tracking their progress.

This year, customers will have a variety of new snack options.

Buyers can select healthy assortments, including the Cranberry Trail mix, which includes cranberries, raisins, almonds, banana chips, walnuts, and cashews; or sweet treats like the Peppermint Bark Rounds or Mint Chocolate Trefoils. Each Girl Scout can accept orders through their digital store in addition to taking paper orders.

Customers can also

subscribe to hundreds of magazines or renew current subscriptions to benefit their favorite through their Girl Scout and her troop.

In addition, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County continue to support Long Island Cares as part of its ongoing efforts to support Long Islanders facing food insecurity. Those looking to support can purchase products through Care to Share, and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County will donate products to those in need.
