month our display case will feature information provided by the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The group provides support and direct services to patients living within the Township of Islip dealing with breast or other women’s cancer.

Inside Showcase – The Islip town Fire and EMS Museum and Education

Center will be displaying an exhibit regarding the rich history of the volunteer Fire and EMS agencies serving the Town of Islip for over 125 years.

Gallery – Lynn Logan Roselli is a contemporary artist who will be displaying her art work for the public to enjoy.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Historic Hudson Valley recently announced the return of The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, a 28-day immersive, family friendly Halloween experience, set on Long Island’s historic 19th century village at the beloved Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Blaze: Long Island began on September 30, 2022 and runs through November 6, 2022. For tickets and event dates, visit www.pumpkinblaze.org. Advance ticket purchases are required.

Historic Hudson Valley, which develops and produces the event, is a not-for-profit education organization that owns and operates National Historic Landmarks in New York’s Sleepy Hollow region. Proceeds from ticket purchases will support the education and preservation of Old Bethpage Village Restoration and Historic Hudson Valley.

Long Island’s Largest Halloween Event, The Great Jack O’lantern Blaze Returns To Old Bethpage Village Restoration

“I want to thank Historic Hudson Valley for bringing its highly successful Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze to Nassau County again this year,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “This will be the third time Long Islanders will be able to enjoy this breathtaking, magical exhibit, the largest of its kind and an event that draws tens of thousands of residents from across Long Island.”

A tremendous artistic production, noted Creative Director Michael Natiello, who has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, The Rachael Ray Show, The Today Show and HGTV, and whose carvings have been featured in the New York Times and People Magazine, leads a 25-person production team to produce Blaze: Long Island. Lead Carver, Carol Hough, who resides in Massapequa, and Artistic Carver, Rocco N. Lanzilotta of Westbury, will guide and direct Blaze:

THE GREAT JACK O’LANTERN BLAZE - Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman welcomed The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze back to Long Island at a press conference held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The family friendly Halloween experience will run through November 6, 2022. Blaze: Long Island takes place at Old Bethpage Village Restoration and will feature over 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns, with 25 elaborate Halloween-themed exhibits and an original soundtrack and synchronized lighting. New installations will celebrate Long Island’s history and culture. For tickets and event dates, visit www.pumpkinblaze.org. Advance ticket purchases are required.

Long Island’s 15 artisans, who hand-carve 7,000 jack o’lanterns which will be displayed in elaborate pumpkin sculptures throughout the event.

“This year’s event features more exhibits and new special effects, which we are all very excited about,” said Waddell Stillman, President, Historic Hudson Valley. “I want to thank Nassau County for welcoming us back and for giving us the opportunity to entertain Long Islanders like never before! I also want to thank the many hard-working artisans, production team members and community volunteers, who are working day and night to bring this thrilling Halloween event to life.”

Over 400 community volunteers, including Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops from Plainedge,

Levittown, and West Islip, as well as Bethpage High School and Plainedge High School students, will also participate in the event as the Official Lighters of the 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns.

About Old Bethpage Village Restoration

Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a living history museum owned and operated by Nassau County that provides guests the opportunity to step back in time to the island’s agrarian past. The Village, which hosts the Long Island Fair in September, consists of homes, barns and other buildings dating back to 1765. Costumed interpreters describe life as it was in the 19th century and historic trade smiths demonstrate various trades.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.

HKS is comprised of Helen Keller Services for the Blind, a regional division serving the New York City/Long Island area, and the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults, a national division headquartered in Sands Point, New York, with a network of regional offices that extends HKS’ reach across the United States. Our Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) is located in Port Washington and is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

2022 Annual Jake K Foundation Zombie Run!

The Jake K Foundation (JKF) is pleased to announce our 2022 annual “Zombie Run” to be held on Saturday, October 8th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon. Join us for the Zombie Run 5k, a run or walk to benefit the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation (the JKF)“Reducing the barriers to recovery.”  Run with us in person on race day, or join us from anywhere in the world by using our virtual option.

The Mission of JKF is to bridge the gap for those affected and effected by Substance Use Disorder (Addiction) who are ready and willing to seek a solution. We are closing the gaps in the recovery road through education, connection,

while providing resources to those without access to resources. Funds donated to JKF are used to support entry funding and transportation to recovery facilities that use a peer community model that teaches a solution that have a program duration of four months or longer.

People in active drug and alcohol addiction will do damage to their families, end up in an institution, in jail, die, or they work to build recovery. We create opportunities for people to take their lives back.

Participants will receive a long sleeve race t-shirt with our zombie race logo. Awards will go to the top overall male and female runners, plus the top winners in age groups.

Costume Contest. Think you got what it takes to be the greatest zombie in the bunch?  Wear your finest Zombie garb to the event!  Our panel of undead experts will pick their favorites and award $50 Amazon gift cards to the six best costumes.  Criteria for winning will be determined by the panel, based on which costumes make us laugh, cry, scare us, or binge watch the Walking Dead.

2022 Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival

At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants. A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided by the Seaford

Knights of Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Corporate sponsors include Renewal by Andersen of Long Island, New York Life and Veolia.

Prior to the festival, South and McDonald Ponds will be stocked with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. The high concentration of stocked trout should provide a great opportunity to introduce your family to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing. In addition to fishing opportunities, there will be a wildlife show, magic performance, and much more.

(NAPSI)-Here’s eye-opening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday stress.

“When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey.

“Controlling stress and getting a good night’s rest start with

evaluating your lifestyle.”

Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition, agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements,

exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.”

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought 4-Session Training

In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities; deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.
