Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. Blood Emergency: Blood And Platelet Donors Urgently Needed New York Blood Center (NYBC) recently announced a blood emergency, as the region’s ongoing heatwave, summer travel, and a recent spike in COVID-19 cases have caused a significant decrease in donations over the past several weeks. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of donors to receive life-saving blood donations, but these factors have caused the blood supply to become unstable. The blood supply currently stands at a 1-2-day level, which is well below the ideal level of NYBC5-7-days.ispartnering with local breweries for their “Pint for a Pint” campaign, which runs from August 1st – September 10th at all donor centers and community blood drives. Island Jam Band About Long Island’s Own Buddy Merriam: Buddy Merriam and Back Roads were formed in 1980 out of Buddy’s love and respect for traditional Bluegrass music. He became close friends with the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, and got to learn from and eventually perform with him.In September of 2015 Buddy was honored to receive the “Long Island Sound Award” from the LI Music Hall of Fame “For Outstanding Contributions to Long Island’s Musical Heritage.” He has brought Back Roads down to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to perform a few times, and they’ve also performed at the grand opening of the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame in Owensboro, KY and Country Music’s Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. The group has played at most of the Bluegrass Festivals in the northeastern U.S., including Grey Fox and Podunk, and at several Long Island venues, such as Hecksher Park in Huntington, Bald Hill Cultural Center, Agawam Park in Southampton, and has headlined concerts for LITMA (the Long Island Traditional Music Association), the Huntington Folk Music Society and the Museums at Stony Brook Folk & FiddleBuddyFestival.
