Bay ShoreBrightwaters Library Bus Trips

The Arts & Leisure Group of the Bay ShoreBrightwaters Library is having bus trips to:

1. The Museum at Eldridge Street which is in the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue. We will have a private tour of the museum. Our next stop will be South Street Seaport where you will have time for lunch and sightseeing. The cost of this trip is $52.00 per person and includes Museum entry and one hour tour, bus transportation and driver gratuity. The trip will be on Tuesday, September 12th. We will leave the library at 8:00 a.m. We will leave South Street Seaport at 3:00 P.M. for our return trip to the Library. Scouts BSA Troops 43 And 430 Support The BSFD Run To The Pump Event

Troops 43 & 430 both charted by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore, worked together to support the Bay Shore Fire Department’s Run to the Pump 5K on Saturday July 15, 2023. The scouts and scouters provided water and encouragement to the runners at the 1/2 way point.

This has been a busy week for the scouts as the majority of Troop 430 was preparing to head to a week of summer camp the following day.

Free Parenting Classes Help Suffolk County Parents Promote The Health Of Their Babies And Toddlers

The Parent Cafe, a free program providing young families in Suffolk County with research-backed advice and guidance for promoting the health of their babies, toddlers, and preschoolers will run in Selden, Bay Shore, Bohemia, and Riverhead through September, paired with virtual programming during that period.

The initiative, called “The First Five Years: Improving the Health of Mothers and their Babies Through Parent and Nutrition Education,” is hosted by the Community Education Program at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE Suffolk), with funding from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.

Expert presenters include parent educators, nutrition educators,

lactation consultants, and others providing parenting advice in a supportive environment over a light breakfast.

The next Parent Cafes will be held at the Middle Country Public Library in Selden:

September 8: Nutrition for Your Toddler (2–3 years)

September 15: Nutrition for Your Preschooler (4-5 years)

September 22: Feeding Families on a Tight Budget

September 29:

Additional in-person Parent Cafes will be held at the Family Service League in Bay Shore, the Connetquot Public Library in Bohemia, and CCE Suffolk headquarters in Riverhead. Free childcare is available at all in-person Parent Cafes.

“Parents are primarily responsible for raising healthy, competent, and responsible members of society,” said Vanessa Lockel, Executive Director of CCE Suffolk. “Yet many lack support and receive conflicting parenting advice. The Parent Cafe allows educators to build a space where parents can connect, enjoy breakfast, and benefit from the latest in parenting education.

“This innovative program offers a holistic, educational approach incorporating parenting, nutrition, and breastfeeding education,” Lockel added. “The setting also provides a safe and welcoming environment for addressing the challenges that pregnant women and new moms often face.”

Ms. Lockel expressed gratitude to the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for underwriting the Parent Cafe program.

“It’s important for parents to find supportive environments where they can share their concerns and learn valuable, child-rearing skills,” said Kerri Reda, Human Development Specialist with the CCE Suffolk Community Education Program. “Staffed by sensitive experts in parent education, this program and its resources are invaluable to young families of Suffolk County.”

According to CCE Suffolk, today’s parents are in particular need of research-based information, skillbuilding, and support because many traditional supports – such as

extended families, cohesive neighborhoods, income security, and community services – have often been in decline. In addition, various demographic, cultural, and societal dynamics have often intensified the challenges facing many parents.

The National Parenting Education Network says that parenting education supports the health, safety, well-being, and economic success of children through adulthood.

A report from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families states that parent education reduces the risk of child abuse and neglect by encouraging parenting practices that promote safety, well-being, and permanency for children and families.

A study by Oregon State University found that parent attendees reported higher school grades, fewer behavior problems, less substance abuse issues, improved mental health, and greater social competence.

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is one of the country’s largest foundations and the largest foundation focused exclusively on healthcare across New York State. The organization provides grants to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of diverse communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services.

JR. LIFEGUARD PROGRAM PREPARES LIFEGUARDS OF TOMORROW -

Over a dozen students age 11 to 14 are learning vital water safety and life-saving lessons through the Town’s Junior Lifeguard Program. The program helps provide students with the necessary training to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course offered to ages 15+, and will further them on the path to become one of our Town’s many dedicated Bay and Pool Lifeguards.

SERENITY GARDENS TO CATER TO ALL ABILITIES - The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

Located on the grounds of Brookwood Hall, Serenity Gardens will be a first-ofits-kind park in the Town, providing people of all abilities a way to enjoy nature, in an environment constructed for their individual needs.

“This, of course, would not have been possible without the dedicated members of the private nonprofit Parks Foundation of Islip Town, and our devoted community, whose donations ensure all $2 million of this garden park is entirely funded free of any burden to taxpayers,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. “The formation of this Islip Parks Foundation has really been a dream come true for me, and something I was proud

to spearhead and make a priority,” said the Supervisor.

Once complete, Serenity Gardens will feature lush foliage and greenery to promote tranquility; fragrant plants and flowers; a garden with a braille system; a walking labyrinth made of stones; sensory walking paths with mulch, tactile pads, rubber and gravel; wind chimes, as well as a sensory wall.

Wide walking paths will surround the entire park and divide it into four quadrants. With the groundbreaking, the Town will begin the process of prepping for these individual components, the first being a large gazebo that will anchor each of the quadrants at the center.

“We must also thank our dedicated Parks and DPW Department, who have been working hard to prepare this Park for installation and will now be hard at work to make our dream for Serenity Gardens a soon-to-be-had reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

The Entenmann Family is sponsoring the Veterans/ Seniors quadrant and the Bohlsen Group is sponsoring the Autism/Developmentally Disabled quadrant.

Quadrant sponsors for the Alzheimer’s Disease/ Dementia quadrant or the Sight/Hearing Impaired quadrant are available. The Foundation is also seeking community feedback and input for Serenity Gardens.
