study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has

the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other

activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

STUDENT MUSIC GROUPS COMPETE SUCCESSFULLY - Three of Bay Shore High School’s musical groups performed at Busch Gardens and were awarded top prizes. The Bay Shore High School Band was awarded silver. The Bay Shore High School Orchestra was awarded silver. The Bay Shore High School Choir was awarded gold. The Band and Orchestra were awarded the Instrumental Sweepstakes Award for Highest Combined Scores. The Band, Orchestra, and Choir were awarded the Overall Sweepstakes Award for Highest Combined Scores. Kartik Singh was awarded the Maestro Award/Outstanding Musician. The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ISLIP HAMLET HOSTS AUTHOR DAVID MORRISON - On Wednesday, May 24th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosted author David Morrison as he recounted stories about the railroad that shaped Long Island history for over 150 years. Society board members with Mr. Morrison are Gene Murphy, Madeline Hanewinckel, Matt Clareen, Jean Marie Reiszl, Chris Vanasco, and Elvira Lettieri. America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!

The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.

America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.

Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.

On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house

manners and socialization skills, while also attending group obedience classes.

Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.

After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.

When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

The Town of Islip enjoys a robust Nutrition Program for its elderly population. The Suffolk County Office for the Aging recognizes the demand and popularity of this program and as a result, designated funds

in its 2020 Suffolk County Operating Budget for the Town of Islip to purchase a van to assist in the delivery of nutrition services to the Town’s elderly residents.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health.

Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
