Music Festival Takes Over Country Club

Thousands turned out for the Town of Islip’s second annual Festival on the Fairway at Holbrook Country Club. The weather was picture perfect for the day-long festival which was enjoyed by children of all ages, and adults alike. The festivities continued throughout the day, with free Arts and Crafts; Mini Golf; Hole in One; Lasso Challenge; Cornhole;

touch-a-truck; food, beverage and shopping vendors; Petting Zoo & Pony Rides; Line Dance instruction; music by Southbound; This is Garth and more.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. There was something for everyone to enjoy, whether it be Line Dancing, a Lasso challenge, tasting delicious food, or just

sitting back, listening to Country Music and taking it all in, there were smiles wherever you turned,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Special ‘thank you’ to our wonderful team at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs for their tremendous hard work putting this together for the residents of our Town,” said the Supervisor.

HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS ANNUAL WRITING CONFERENCE - The Bay Shore High School English Department held its annual student writers’ conference, Ethnic Pen. Award-winning American filmmaker, investigative journalist, and writer Keith Beauchamp gave the keynote address, sharing his journey creating the movie “Till.” After the main assembly, students worked with local writers in smaller workshops. At a luncheon that afternoon, students Nafisa Rahman (1st place), Raifah Sheikh (2nd place), Skyler Duke (3rd place), and Chris Castillo (honorable mention) were recognized for their submissions to the annual writing contest. The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

Since 2004, their organization has Inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are now recognized in their new Stony Brook location. In addition to their large exhibition area, theater and o cial “Hall of Fame Museum”, the 8,800 square foot building is home to a beautiful performance area. They’re open Wednesdays-Sundays from 12 noon through 5pm. Admission prices are: Adult $19.50, Seniors (65+) and Veterans $17.00, Students (w/ID) $15.00. Children under 12 are free. Tickets and now gift cards can be purchased online and at the door.

Bird Walk At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Join the South Shore Audubon Society on a bird walk on Sunday, May 21, starting at 9 AM, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

To reach the Refuge, take the Southern State Parkway west to the Belt Parkway. Exit at Cross Bay Boulevard (Exit 17) south. Continue south on Cross Bay Blvd. through Howard Beach and over the North

Channel Bridge (also known as the Congressman Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge).

The entrance to the refuge parking lot is on the right side of the road, at a traffic light approximately one and a half miles past the bridge.

All are welcome. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their knowledge and experience

with you. The bird walk is free of charge. Bring binoculars. Rain will cancel the bird walk.

Memory Of Islip’s Fallen Firefighters Honored With Cupola Lighting

The Town of Islip paid tribute to the memory of its fallen hometown heroes, FDNY Jesse Gerhard and FDNY William Moon, with a cupola lighting ceremony on Thursday, May 4th. The event marks the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s, “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters,” which invites fire and community organizations, businesses, landmarks

and homes to light up red on May 4, International Firefighters Day, through May 7, National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, and honors the sacrifice of America’s fallen fire heroes.

Jesse Gerhard was a 12year veteran of the Islip Fire Department and a member of the FDNY. On February 15th, 2022, Jesse answered his final call, suddenly passing away

while on duty at Ladder 134 just days after battling a 2nd alarm fire.

Together at the steps of Islip Town Hall, stood the Gerhard and Moon families, joined by members of the Islip Fire Department; Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter; Councilmen Jorge Guadrón and John M. Lorenzo, in solemn tribute to the memory and legacy of these fallen heroes.

“The loss of Jesse at

just 33 years-old shook the Islip community, but we take comfort in knowing Jesse followed his heart, and fulfilled his childhood dream of joining the FDNY in his greatgrandfather’s footsteps. Jesse’s commitment to making the world a better place drove him forward, and he died in service of that cause. For this we remember his legacy,” said Islip Town Supervisor,

Billy joined the FDNY in 2002 and served for 20 years with the utmost dedication and skill, serving Ladder 133 in Queens, culminating in his transfer to the prestigious Rescue 2 in Brooklyn. Billy also served in Islip, as a devoted volunteer with the Islip Fire Department, serving as Chief in 2017.

“Billy’s career and impact as a firefighter for over two decades of service truly defined his legacy as a hero. After his death, that legacy lives on. Billy’s donated organs have saved the lives of five people. Among those, are two New York City Fire Fighters, ensuring that his memory will not be forgotten,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

2023 Suffolk County Council Camporee

2023 SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL CAMPOREE - On the weekend starting Friday night April 28, 2023, Scout Troop 43 and Troop 430 both chartered by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore, joined other scouts and scouters from all over Suffolk County and a few from Nassau County to attend the 2023 SCC Camporee at South Haven Park. It was a very wet and windy weekend but the scouts were prepared and made the best of it enjoying the activities, camping, and being in outdoors. The scouts would like to thank AMVETS Post 76, their Scout Leaders, and their families for the continued support of the program in the area. Scout’s BSA programs offer youth the opportunities and access to experiences that are always available to others, opportunities to learn and grow in a safe and supervised setting.
