Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 14, 2024. April 30 Is National Therapy Animal Day: Consider Volunteering With Your Pet

It’s no secret animals can have a positive impact on a person’s mental and physical health. That’s why every year thousands of facilities such as libraries, schools, hospitals, assisted living, and more ask Pet Partners volunteers to bring therapy animals to visit and provide comfort to their students, residents, patients, and customers. This April 30 is a special day to recognize the beneficial role therapy dogs and other therapy animals, in partnership with their human companions, play in creating happier, healthier communities.

Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of therapy animal teams in the United States. Pet Partners is the nation’s leading registry of therapy animals, and their volunteer teams can’t fulfill all the requests they receive for therapy animal visits. The need for therapy animals has never been greater to provide comfort and support, especially after the impacts of the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social discord in recent years.

The good news is that a wide variety of species can be therapy animals, not

just dogs. Cats, equines, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mini pigs, birds, and even llamas and alpacas are eligible for registration through the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program, which makes more than three million visits a year.

“An animal’s temperament is what determines whether they might make a good registered therapy animal with Pet Partners, not any specific species or breed,” said Pet Partners President and CEO C. Annie Peters. “Many of our therapy animals are rescue pets, and they assist everyone from veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, students with literacy challenges, patients in recovery, and people with intellectual disabilities. We couldn’t be more grateful for all that our volunteer therapy teams do for people in need around the world.”

Therapy animals have a special aptitude for interacting with members of the public and enjoy doing so. Therapy animal handlers have a strong trust-based bond with their pet and facilitate interactions that benefit

all involved. The handleranimal pair takes part in an extensive evaluation process to make sure they will be successful with people in a variety of circumstances.

We have experts available to talk about the value therapy animals bring to communities, what behaviors a pet should exhibit, how the process works and more. We also have therapy animal handlers all across the United States who would love to talk about the joys of volunteering with their pets.

Pet Partners is also specifically seeking more cats and handlers to become registered volunteer teams. In partnership with Cat Person, a cat care brand, a research study on the Cat Human Bond found that cats can provide a special form of comfort that dogs cannot. Special incentives are also being offered for new cat teams.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May.

Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 13th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s

Pet Food Drive For Baxter’s Pet Pantry

Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously donated to this annual drive.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to

Good, Old-Fashioned Yard Sale

Everyone loves a good, oldfashioned yard sale. The people of the Islip United Methodist Church, 350 Main Street, Islip, especially love yard sales! For the past ten years, the members of the Methodist Church have held a huge, church-wide garage sale to raise money for their various mission projects.

This year, their Annual Spring Yard Sale will be held on April 27th from 10- 2 at the Islip United Methodist Church 350 Main Street, Islip. There will be lots of items available. Just think about the treasures that might be found. The church Thrift Shop will also be open from 10 – 2

Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library

A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The library will have a social work intern available to meet with you to help with referrals to social services, help with food and housing assistance and mental health resources. Call the library for more information and to set up an appointment.

MINI FOOD PANTRY

– The Bay ShoreBrightwaters Library will be starting a Mini Food Pantry for those in the community that might need some extra help. If you are interested in contributing, please bring items to the Circulation Desk. Nonperishable food, baby items or paper products are greatly appreciated.

May 7th through June 25th – Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. –The non-refundable fee for this class is $24.00. The “Simply Stronger” senior fitness classes are designed to help you maintain flexibility and strength. This class is suitable for everyone.
