The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Come Together For The Making An Impact Breakfast
Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their 2023 Making an Impact Breakfast, featuring a panel full of Long Island industry leaders. Held in support of the Girl Scout Discovery World STEM & Art Center, the event highlighted the importance of the Girl Scout Mission and its many positive impacts on our society.
“Part of the Girl Scout’s mission is to help shape the leaders of tomorrow, and we were thrilled to have been joined by so many strong women in leadership for our Making an Impact Breakfast event to inspire our Girl Scouts,” said Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “As women and girls, it is important to highlight these important discussions during this event, as they often get overlooked. We are extremely thankful to all that attended and supported this event as it will support many Girl Scouts, providing them access to experiences they otherwise would not have.”
The event featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Sandra Lindsay, Vice
President of Public Health Advocacy at Northwell Health. A panel discussion was moderated by Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, and Donna Smeland, Chair of the Board of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. Panelists included Catherine Canadeo, Board-Certified Holistic Health Coach and CEO of Canadeo Health & Wellness Corp., Jackie Gordon, Retired Lt. Colonel of the US Army, Karen Sweeny, Vice President of Member Experience, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Kristin Thorne, Investigative Reporter, WABC-TV Eyewitness News.
The panel discussion addressed the important topics of mental wellness and self-care, financial literacy, career preparatory programming, combatting gender gaps in STEM fields, and more. Participants shared personal experiences and insight regarding these vital issues and shared advice on navigating these instances best.
Proceeds from the event will help GSSC reimagine its Discovery World STEM + Arts Center. The Discovery
World STEM + Arts Center is located at GSSC’s Camp Sobaco in Yapank, New York. The STEM Center provides girls with interactive experiences, demonstrations, and presentations on all things Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Girls can participate in immersive activities and events at the Center as they look to discover and develop new skills through their Girl Scouting experience.

As the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) gets ready to kick off its Spring Season in our 10 leagues from Long Island to the Canadian border, the growth of our programs has created a need for additional referees and assistant refs.
There are many wonderful things that happen when a person starts to ref including earning money, having the best view of the action, learning to manage people, learning more about the game, staying or becoming fit, expanding yourself by leaving your comfort zone as well as meeting the greatest people on soccer fields, including your new officiating colleagues. Becoming a youth soccer ref could be one of the best decisions you ever make!
Eastern New York is seeking new referees to be in the middle and/or on the line as assistant referees in youth soccer games. The minimum age is 14 years old to become certified.
Classes are happening throughout the state and they consist of an online learning process wrapped up by a field session. For more info about certification near you, please contact State Youth Referee Administrator Cheryl Aronson at syra@ enysreferee.org and she will let you know how to get started.
With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 10
leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81. ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.
Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”
RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.
Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then
get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?
•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.
•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.
•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.
•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

More than 235 locations in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Florida, and Arizona will be raising funds to empower the lives of children and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases though April 30th for the annual MDA Shamrocks campaign to benefit the mission of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Funds raised go towards accelerating research, advancing care, and advocating for the support of families.
New York Community Bancorp are adding an iconic paper Shamrock (pinup) to their purchase at check out for just $1, $5 or a larger contribution. New York Community Bancorp joins thousands of other retail locations throughout the country in this year’s campaign — the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Daythemed fundraiser. The Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate
The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin
is a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low,
then donors will be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal.
So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new
blood cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.
