Suffolk County Legislature Marks First Irish American Heritage Celebration

Steven J. Flotteron was joined by members of the legislature and hundreds of community members to mark Suffolk County’s first Irish-American Heritage Celebration at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Each Legislative District recognized someone who has contributed to the betterment of our Irish population. Legislator

Flotteron recognized Bay Shore’s Ronnie Allen as the 11th Legislative District’s honoree for his life-long commitment in

promoting Irish culture, including running dances, encouraging Irish step and Ceili dancing, putting on concerts, and introducing many great Irish artists to our area. Allen’s proudest accomplishment was forming the Hibernian Festival Singers in 1980 with a dozen members and today 75-strong, singing the Latin Mass in the Vatican and in many parts of Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland and in Ireland and in many of the great cathedrals around NY and LI, particularly St. Patrick’s Church in Bay

Shore where they have starred in their annual Christmas concert for the last 35 years.

In 2018, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously passed a bill brought forward by Flotteron to establish March as Irish American Heritage Month. This recognition is a great opportunity to celebrate the nearly 33 million Americans with Irish ancestry and their tremendous contributions to the betterment of our country.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together.

The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. Outdoor Stations Of The Cross – 1.5 Mile Walking Service

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island welcomes the Catholic faithful across Long Island to participate in its Stations of the Cross prayer service at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury this Good Friday, April 7th. This prayer service, which is one of the largest attended events at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island each year, is celebrated annually on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. During the prayer service, the Catholic faithful will follow a 1.5 mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees.

Hundreds of Catholics are expected to take part in the Good Friday services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with selfdirected tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station:

Stations of the Cross Prayers – Easy Print Format Prayer booklets may also be picked up at Holy Rood Chapel. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, located at 111 Old Country Road in Westbury, is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily.

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.
