Legislator Flotteron Recognizes AOH, Division 7 Annual John P. Reilly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Honorees

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized this year’s Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Division 7 Annual John P. Reilly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Dinner/ Sashing of Grand Marshals honoree Shawn O’Neil and Ladies Aide honoree Mary C. Phalen at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore.

O’Neil was raised in East Islip and he has been a life-long member of the AOH Division 7 serving as the Mission and Charities Chairman, the Color Guard and bass drummer with the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band. He later became the Treasurer and currently serves today. In addition, he served on several committees such

as; the Finance Chairman, assisted in the Community Children Christmas Party, Queen of Hearts, Athletic Club, acted in one of Larry Wolf’s plays, Past President of the Division, currently is the President of the Local Hibernians Inc. and was a Past Hibernian of the Year. He was also active in the community, coaching all his children in CYO Basketball, Little League of the Islips, East Islip Soccer and Summer Basketball.

Phalen has been an East Islip resident for the past 62 years. She was involved with St. Mary’s Rosary Altar Society (RAS) working on various committees and fundraisers including running the Parish

Christmas Fair and became President of the RAS and was honored with their Annual Service Award at their Fall Festival Dance in 2005 and later joined the East Islip Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. In addition, she became a religious education teacher working with 2nd graders preparing them for their first communion as well as being a Cub Scout Den Leader while her son was in Cub Scouts. She later joined the Ladies AOH, became active in committees, joined the Celtic Degree Team and was the team’s Narrator and she is still actively involved with them.

The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

On behalf of its residents, the Greybarn community recently completed its annual season of giving as it donated $7,500 to various charities and causes across Suffolk County to better the lives of community members from all walks of life. This year’s donations continue Greybarn’s fiveyear tradition of giving on behalf of the residents of the Rechler Equity Partners luxury apartment development.

In Sayville, a total $1,500 was donated to the Chestene M. Coverdale Food Pantry, Sayville Cabinet for the Sick, which provides items for the elderly not covered by insurance, and Christopher Collucio Foundation, which combats teen suicides.

In Patchogue, $2,000 was donated to the Kris Kringle organization, which is ran by the owners of the

Harber Crab restaurant, that has raised money to help families in need at the holidays for nearly 20 years.

Pronto of Long Island, located in Bay Shore, was the recipient of a $1,000 check to help its efforts to support families. The Greybarn team also administered a food, toy and clothing drive for the organization.

In the Amityville community, Greybarn once again supported Bethel AME Church, the oldest African American church on Long Island. A donation of $2,000 supported the church’s efforts to provide meals to those in need and the elderly, as well as an after-school program that gives students access to computers to complete their schoolwork.

Finally, Greybarn supported a former

resident, Officer Thomas Joy of the Suffolk County Police Department, who serves as a community liaison and recruiter for the department. Officer Joy, also an Army Reserves Sergeant, received $1,000 to give the

families of four active-duty military members a holiday to remember.

“Our community here at Greybarn always comes together to support various causes throughout the year. Its very special for us to make

these contributions on their behalf each holiday season,” said Greybarn’s Community Director Michael Loeffler.

“I’d like to thank my Rechler Equity Partners colleagues, specifically Director of Community

Relations Director Claudia Mazzola, for organizing these incredible efforts.”
