Flotteron recognized William (Bill) Blackman at a Crew Team fundraiser at The Piermont in Babylon, for his 26 years with the Bay Shore School District where he served as a Physical Education Teacher for grades 9-12, Head Varsity Coach and Founder of the Boys Crew Team and Fitness Trainer/ Water Sports.

Blackman grew up in Northport with a long history on the water as a distinguished sailor. He was a lifeguard at Robert Moses for more than 25 years, often offering swimming lessons to athletes wanting to join the crew team who didn’t know how to swim. He has built an institution in a sport that is normally associated with private schools and prep schools.

Bay Shore crew is highly regarded in the crew circles across NY State for a public school team.

He has established long standing relationships with his athletes, some who have come back to coach with him.

Through the years, many of his boats have qualified for the “Grand Finals” at NY State Championships (many placing well).

Boats have reached the Grand Final at the prestigious Stotesbury Cup (world’s largest High School Regatta). Through the years several boats have qualified for the Nationals. Many athletes have gone on to row in college both at the scholarship level and non-scholarships level.

In addition, his team was Boys Senior 4 NY State 2001Champs.

Facts About St. Valentine Saint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers and engaged and married couples. He also is the name behind the holiday that inspires images of red hearts and rose petals in the middle of February. Not much is actually known about St. Valentine because records are sparse.

However, these facts have emerged.

martyred. In fact, some believe there were about a dozen St. Valentines.

• Of course St. Valentine is known for presiding over lovers. However, he’s also the patron saint of epilepsy, watching over those who experience seizures associated with the disease.

• Visitors to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome can find the flower-adorned skull of St. Valentine on display. Other parts of St. Valentine’s skeleton are on display in the Czech Republic, England, France, and Ireland.

ame watches with fellow fans, family and friends are a great way to make playoff football even more enjoyable. With so many big games on the horizon, football fans would be wise to ready their culinary arsenal. Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are a great match.

Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. As this year’s playoffs kick off, football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes.com.

Loaded Beef Nachos Serves 4

Taco Seasoning: 5 teaspoons paprika 1 1⁄4

teaspoons garlic powder

1 1⁄4

teaspoons ground cumin

1 1⁄4

teaspoons onion powder

1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon oregano leaves 1 1⁄2

teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed

and salt together in a small bowl; set aside.

until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more.

Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix.

Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes.

To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese.

Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer.

Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.
