Summer Successes For West Islip’s Science Department

During the summer months, West Islip Union Free School District students in the science research program continued working hard on their projects. Their achievements have earned both national recognition and published success.

West Islip graduates Eva Crosley and Abby Lam — two members of a larger

student research team — were featured in a video that has been nominated for a New York Emmy Award. The film highlights microplastics research conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory and was created as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Planet vs. Plastics” campaign. At the same time, West

Islip science research teacher Mary Kroll, serving as Principal Investigator for BNL’s High School Spectroscopy group, was published in the journal “Chemistry” for her collaborative work with Shoreham-Wading River High School students. Their study used advanced x-ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques to

In addition, West Islip students joined peers from across Long Island through BNL’s SPARK program, where they collaborated on mineral database projects and future research initiatives:

• Nicole Podolska worked with students from

Bethpage, East Hampton, Newfield, ShorehamWading River and Westhampton Beach to explore new project opportunities and resources.

• Alyssa Barbieri, Jared Bharat, Chris Gee, Jillian Olfano and Dana Shi partnered with Smithtown High School East and Shoreham-

Wading River students to continue building a state-of-the-art x-ray diffraction mineral database.

From Emmy nominations to published papers, West Islip continues to shine as a hub of innovation, collaboration and discovery — showcasing the power of student achievement and teacher expertise.

No More New Year’s Resolutions?

Every year, millions of people around the world make New Year’s resolutions, only to find themselves struggling to keep them just a few weeks into the New Yea. But what if there was a better way to make lasting changes in your life? Instead of waiting until January 1st to declare your intentions, why not start on your path to change in September, right after Labor Day?

This year, the day after Labor Day until the end of the year is exactly 120 days. That’s 120 days to make meaningful changes in your life, giving yourself plenty of time to prepare and adjust. You can also choose to make it 100 days or even 90 days, depending on what works best for you. The key is to give yourself enough time and space to make the changes you want, without the pressure of a New Year’s deadline. Imagine dancing into

2026 because you made the change you wanted to make. By starting in the fall, you give yourself the opportunity to gradually implement new habits and routines, making them more sustainable in the long run. This approach

allows you to ease into your new lifestyle, rather than diving in headfirst on January 1st and potentially setting yourself up for failure.

This extended period

allows you to build momentum and see real progress, making it more likely that you’ll stick with your new habits. It also recognizes that, sometimes in life, we take two steps up and one step back. When it comes to change, success is almost never a straight line. So, find something that you’ve been wanting

to change and start your journey this fall. Whether it’s getting in shape, learning a new skill, or breaking a bad habit, give yourself the gift of time and start making those changes now. By the time the New Year rolls around, you’ll already be well on your way to a better, happier you… and it’s a great present to give yourself this holiday season!

Whena new school year begins, families must adjust to getting out of the house to the school bus or carpool on time. It is important to begin busy days with a breakfast that will facilitate learning, but parents know convenience is important as well. Parents may want to incorporate some new breakfast options into the mix, particularly ones kids will enjoy. This tasty recipe for “Banana and Pecan Granola Bowl with Caramelized Bananas” from “Rainbow Bowls” (Sourcebooks) by Niki Webster relies on bananas in two different ways to impart a sweet taste that is hard to beat. The granola makes about four to six portions, so there will be leftovers to enjoy as a snack later in the day or stored away for another time.

tablespoon coconut oil

To serve

Coconut yogurt

1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional)

Pinch of thyme (optional)

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F).

Blend the coconut oil, maple syrup, bananas, and almond extract in a blender until smooth.

Add all the dry ingredients to a large bowl and mix well. Add the wet mixture to the bowl and stir well to combine.

Line a large baking tray with baking paper and then tip the granola mix on to the tray and flatten out. Bake for 25 minutes, until starting to brown. Carefully flip over on the tray, then return to the oven and bake for a further 15 minutes (until you get a nice brown color).

Leave to cool before breaking into smaller chunks, then store in an airtight container for up to 1 week (if not eating straight away).

To make the caramelized bananas, chop off the top end of each of the bananas, then carefully slice through the middle lengthways. Now, peel the bananas.

Melt the coconut oil in a pan on medium heat. Add the banana slices and fry in the oil on one side for 1 to 2 minutes until browned, then flip over to caramelize the other side for another 1 to 2 minutes.

Serve the granola with yogurt, caramelized bananas, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a pinch of thyme if you fancy.

New Barbara Rabinowitz

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will host a “Family Fun Day” on Saturday, September 27, from 11:00 am – 2:30 pm at its newly opened Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center (149 Schleigel Boulevard, Amityville, NY 11701).

The event is a celebration of community and Grandparents Appreciation Month. There will be a special guest appearance for former NY Giants’

great, two-time Super Bowl champion, Leonard Marshall. For a $25 donation, attendees can get an autograph and photo with the Giants’ legend. All proceeds will go to support the Center’s programs and services for Long Islanders impacted by dementia.

“We are thrilled to open our doors to the community and invite families to come together for a day of fun, connection, and discovery. Family Fun Day is more than just a celebration—it is our way of saying: this center belongs to you,” said

Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President and CEO.

“This intergenerational event is a celebration of family and community.

We encourage everyone to attend, have fun, learn about the importance of brain health, and take a tour of the facility.”

Attendees can learn about the programs and services offered at the Center and enjoy an array of activities. Family Fun Day will feature intergenerational activities

including creative arts, brain games and additional games for children, face painting, food, music, balloon artists, raffles, and more. a memory challenge, or just enjoying the laughter echoing from the dunk tank, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

This special event will also mark the introduction of our brand-new Community Education & Resource Center to the community—a welcoming space dedicated to learning, connection, and lifelong support for all generations.

Among the raffles given away that day will be an autographed NY Giants football helmet signed by Leonard Marshall. Leonard Marshal is a former Pro Bowler and Defensive Lineman of the Year. In 2022, he

was inducted into the New York Giants Ring of Honor, celebrating his accomplishments alongside other franchise legends. Leonard Marshall was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in 2013, a progressive degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma, making him among the first former NFL players to receive a clinical diagnosis while still living.

After his diagnosis, Leonard became a vocal advocate. He pledged his brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation and founded Brain Unity Trust and the Game Plan Foundation to

raise awareness, support research, and help athletes impacted by neurological trauma.

Centrally located in Amityville, the 11,500 square foot, state-ofthe-art AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center — the first of its kind on Long Island — is accessible to the nearly 3 million residents of Suffolk and Nassau Counties. The center offers free daily programming to Long Island families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses.
