Deer Park Fire Department Hosts September 11th Remembrance Ceremony
On Saturday, September 6th, 2025, the Deer Park Fire Department held a solemn and moving ceremony to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as well as those who have since passed away due to illnesses stemming from the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.
Members of the Deer Park Fire Department,
community residents, and elected officials gathered together for the tribute, which served as a powerful reminder of the lives lost and the heroism displayed on that tragic day. As part of the ceremony, residents were allowed to lay a bouquet of roses beneath the names of their loved ones, creating a poignant moment of reflection and
remembrance.
Supervisor Rich Schaffer reflected on the importance of the annual gathering, stating, “Each year, our community comes together on this solemn occasion to remember, to reflect, and to stand united. It is in these moments that we are reminded of the strength and resilience of our neighbors and
our shared commitment never to forget.”
Councilman and FDNY Firefighter Terence McSweeney spoke to the lasting impact of the tragedy, saying, “This day will forever hold a special meaning. We honor not only the lives lost on that tragic day, but also those who gave their health and ultimately their lives during the rescue and
recovery. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. On behalf of our residents, thank you for ensuring that we will always ‘Never Forget.’”
Deer Park Fire Chief Rob Macaluso emphasized the department’s commitment to remembrance, noting, “It is our honor to host this ceremony each year. As a department and as
a community, we are committed to ensuring the memories of the heroes and victims of September 11th live on, and that their sacrifices are never forgotten.”
The ceremony served as a testament to unity, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the Deer Park community, more than two decades after the events of September 11th.

Did You Know?
Some people may notice a day when people who adhere to the Jewish faith gather around bodies of water and seem to throw bread, a sight that may spark curiosity. This is a tradition that takes place during Rosh Hashanah. Tossing bread or crumbs of bread into water is part of the Jewish ritual of “Tashlich,” which is a symbolic act occurring on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Tashlich means “casting off” in Hebrew. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year when the faithful symbolically cleanse themselves of sins and other transgressions. Tossing the bread or crumbs away is symbolic of that cleansing. This helps start the new year on fresh footing.
