The second of many educational milestones is complete for kindergartners at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. There was the first day of school in September and now, 10 months later, they have successfully completed their first full year of school.
Harbor’s youngest learners were in the spotlight at a movingup ceremony on June 18. While they will be returning to the same
school in the fall, it was an accomplishment worthy of a celebration because of how much they have grown both academically and socially since that first day.
Proud parents filled the all-purpose room

for the special moment, which included a musical presentation. Among the vocal selections were “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” “One Small Voice” and a school-themed parody of Journey’s “Don’t
Stop Believing.” Children practiced the songs for about a month so they were prepared to dazzle their families.
Students then donned green caps with gold tassels, and each of the five classes came up to the stage and stood under a rainbow balloon arch to be recognized. At the end of the ceremony, each child got a certificate and copy of the book “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates.”
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board invite residents to celebrate our nation at a special “Salute to America” concert and Grucci Fireworks Show scheduled for Tuesday, July 9th at a special start time of 7:30 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. This year’s “Salute to America” will feature a performance by Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, and will conclude with a spectacular firework show by Grucci. This event honors veterans and members of the United States Armed Forces. Concertgoers are urged to bring folding chairs and pack a cooler, as no formal seating exists.

There was a little bit of everything at Seaford High School’s annual Evening of Student Showcases on June 4, which featured work from numerous subject areas.
The first stop was the Advanced Placement Research gallery, with 26 juniors showcasing their year-long independent research projects. English teacher Tania Cintorino said that students picked topics of personal interest, did research to find out what information is already
known, and identified gaps in knowledge. Each student then designed a study to collect data and contribute new information to the field.
There were a wide variety of topics this year, such as animal activism, language acquisition, nostalgia in music and rollercoasters.
“We really try to help all students find something they really care about to research,” Ms. Cintorino said. “It was a privilege to see their growth throughout the year, and how their interests
and passions evolved into these amazing projects.”
AP Research is the second part of the AP Capstone program. Students took an introductory research course, AP Seminar, as sophomores, which focuses on research skills and group projects.
Another space was devoted to nine students from the science research program, as well as one recent graduate. They showed their posterboard presentations from the various science
competitions they entered this year, including Long Island Science Congress, Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, Kathy Belton Science Fair, Thomas Edison Pitch Contest and the South Asian American Women’s Alliance science fair.
The young scientists completed their research under the direction of teachers Lilly Alaimo and John Posillico, and several also had assistance from expert mentors. Their
areas of research spanned multiple scientific concepts including aerospace, biology, engineering, environmental science and sports medicine.
“They’ve been working really hard all year,” Ms. Alaimo said. “We are super proud of them and it’s great for them to see their work recognized and appreciated.”
In between the two research rooms was the art
gallery walk. Students from the AP Art class showcased the work from their portfolio projects. Teacher Curtis Tripoli said that each artist completed a sustained investigation by picking a theme and creating 15 images that answered his or her inquiry question. The students worked with a variety of mediums, from drawing to painting to photography.
