Dear valued readers,

On November 17, 1953 the very first issue of the South Bay’s Neighbor - then known as South Bay’s Official Shopping Newspaper - was published. Our company has evolved over time, yet has always remained privately and locally owned. We continue to stand by our commitment to delivering positive, hometown news, along with special features like reader contests and puzzles, and of course, advertisements from your favorite merchants.

Through both challenging and prosperous times, we’ve continued to publish every single week, always strongly believing in what we do. The wonderful feedback we consistently receive from our readers reminds us that the publication is valued and wanted.

In an age when information is available at our fingertips, the simplicity of a printed publication filled with trusted, upli ing stories is truly unmatched. There’s something special about turning the pages of a physical paper and reading about the people and events that shape our local community. We’re deeply grateful for your continued support, which has allowed us to keep doing what we do week a er week.

Over the years our company has expanded to also publish a monthly magazine, provide digital marketing services and offer a full range of printing solutions - helping businesses of all sizes create menus, post cards, flyers and more.

Keep an eye out for next week’s newspaper issue, themed for the holidays, featuring hosting tips, festive recipes and more. And don’t forget to shop small this Small Business Saturday - supporting the very businesses that serve as the backbone of our community.

Sincerely,

Fourleaf Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program

HPV Vaccination

Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

The Amityville Police Department is proud to announce the launch of the APO Camo Patch Initiative in honor of Veterans Day and Memorial Day. This initiative recognizes and supports the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

From November 1-15 and May 15-31 each year, all sworn members of the Department are authorized to wear the APO Camo Patch on their official uniforms. The commemorative camouflage patch will replace the standard shoulder patch on both sleeves of the uniform shirt and outerwear during these designated observances.

Members of the public are invited to join this tribute by purchasing Camo Patches for $1

O each through the Amityville PBA Guardian Angel Foundation. To place an order, please email mwalters@ amityvillepdny.gov. All proceeds will be donated directly to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization that provides vital support to America’s veterans, first responders, and their families through housing programs and financial assistance.

“Our officers take great pride in serving their community, and the Camo Patch Initiative allows us to show our gratitude and respect to those who have bravely served our nation,” said APO Chief Frank Caramanica Jr. “We are especially proud to recognize our very own veteran, Police Officer David Fuertes, whose courage and continued commitment to serviceboth in the military and in

law enforcement-embody the very spirit of this initiative.”

Village of Amityville Mayor Michael O’Neill added, “The Amityville Police Department continues to demonstrate its deep commitment to honoring our veterans and supporting organizations that help those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.”

The Camo Patch Initiative reflects the Department’s ongoing dedication to patriotism, community partnership, and honoring those who have served and sacrificed in defense of our country.

Late Knight Warriors Host “Cocktails For A Cause” To Support Local One-Year-Old Jackson Berry In His Fight Against Leukemia

The Late Knight Warriors (LKW), a local nonprofit, will host Cocktails for a Cause on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Tap Room in Bay Shore to support one-yearold Jackson Berry and his family as he battles leukemia.

Jackson is a bright, resilient one-year-old whose life was recently upended by hospital visits, treatments, and the challenges of his fight against leukemia. His father is a longtime friend to several LKW members, making this cause deeply personal to the community.

“This cause is deeply personal to us,” said Laura Gottfried, Vice President of LKW. “My own family faced a similar challenge years ago, and I know how much support can help. With Jackson’s father being a friend to several of our members, we felt an urgent need to build that same network of care and support his family in every way we can.”

The event, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, will feature an appetizer buffet, a signature open bar, and opportunities to participate in a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle. A large portion of proceeds, along with 100% of donations made in Jackson’s name, will go directly to his family.

Tickets are limited so we encourage people to buy their tickets early at the LKW website: https:// lateknightwarriors.com/ lkw-cocktail-party. Those unable to attend can still help by donating or purchasing 50/50 raffle tickets through the LKW website.

About Late Knight Warriors: LKW is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 331831126) that combines social connection with community impact. All events and initiatives are powered entirely by volunteers, with no board member or organizer receiving compensation.

Northeast Elementary School Promotes Antibullying In Amityville

On Oct. 6, students and staff members at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville wore blue in recognition of World Day of Bullying Prevention.

World Day of Bullying Prevention is recognized annually on the first

Monday of October. The initiative brings awareness and educates students, parents and schools about the issue, and it offers hope for every student who experiences the harmful effects of bullying. It also teaches parents to keep

open communication with their children and it promotes the importance of antibullying in the school community.

Kindness And Unity At Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School

Throughout the month of October, which marks National Bullying Prevention Month, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville has participated in several activities to promote kindness,

inclusion and unity. Park Avenue began the month by wearing blue for World Day of Bullying Prevention. Students learned what it means to show kindness to others by creating a Unity Chain filled with

positive messages about their classmates — a symbol of how everyone is all connected. They also learned about the importance of being a buddy, and how Park Avenue’s Buddy Bench on the playground helps

foster friendship and inclusion.

To close the month, students wore orange for Unity Day, standing together against bullying and showing that kindness and inclusion unites everyone.

An Elevated Risk

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some medical conditions can put people at an elevated risk for certain infections. Heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2, chronic lung disease, including COPD,

and kidney failure are among the conditions that can increase a person’s risk for certain infections.

The CDC notes the importance of recognizing this potential connection, as such a recognition can help people understand

the role vaccines can play in promoting their overall health. It’s also vital that men and women realize the connection between their lifestyle choices and their risk for certain infections. For example, excessive consumption of

alcohol and smoking are two controllable risk factors that can elevate a person’s risk for infection. Learn more about vaccinations and your risk for certain infections by visiting www. cdc.gov.
