More than 40 graduates of the Massapequa School District gave advice to the future workforce during the 11th annual Alumni Career Day at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus on April 13th.

The graduates came from as far back as the Class of 1963 and as recent as the Class of 2011, representing both Massapequa and Berner high schools.

They spoke about careers in business and finance, the medical profession, communications, education, technology, the culinary arts and more.

Speakers told the ninthgraders what they need to do in high school to set themselves up for future success.

“At this age, you’re often very undecided about your future, so it’s very important to have something or someone to connect to,” said guidance counselor Kath Balcuk, who organized career day along with business

The imaginations of 20 Massapequa High School art students came to life on paper during the past eight months, and they were recently celebrated for their hard work. The Advanced Placement Studio in Drawing class hosted an exhibition in the upper gymnasium on April 25th and 26th.

Each student had to exhibit two dozen pieces, including 12 related works from his or her selected concentration, and 12 “breath” pieces that showcase technical skills

and knowledge of art using different mediums. Teacher Gail Domingo said that students independently select their projects based upon their interests.

Senior Caitlyn McCreedy’s concentration was lucky charms around the world, and she completed her works in colored pencil. Among her drawings were a Native American holding a dream catcher and a landscape with roses representing Ukraine.

“This class allowed me to branch out of my comfort

zone and I feel that I took my artwork to the next level,” she said. “It was cool to have my classmates and family see my artwork. I felt very accomplished.”

An evening reception was held on April 25 for family members, and the exhibit remained open throughout the school day on April 26 for students and staff to view the artwork. Each display included a biography of the student-artist and information about his or her concentration.

In preparation for their trip to Old Bethpage Village Restoration in April, second-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about maps and directions.

Before taking their trip to the recreated mid-19th century village, students reviewed a map of the grounds and planned their route to travel from building to building.

Stops included the old schoolhouse, general store and farmhouse, and a walk past the baseball field.

Every student was treated to a pretzel and a root beer.

Second-grade teacher Janeen Signorile said that as part of the second-grade social studies curriculum, students learn about the evolution of communities.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration serves an example of a rural town

that also includes many elements found in modern communities.

It was a particularly exciting trip for one of Ms. Signorile’s students, Owen Lavey, whose great-greatgrandparents owned the Noon Inn. The house was originally located in East Meadow and later relocated to Old Bethpage to become part of the recreated village.

May’s Charity of the Month is:

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Art Students Unite The students, faculty and staff of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) came together this month to show their solidarity in the face of tragedy. Fellow artisans joined efforts to create a Peace Garden in the LIHSA courtyard in honor of school

shooting victims everywhere.

Students planted 239 plants, commemorating each school or college campus shooting since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012. The Peace Garden celebrates the vibrancy of life, artistically honoring the victims while uniting LIHSA students in the

pursuit of peace.

The garden features nourishing vegetable plants as well as brightly colored flowers in the flush of their first bloom, representing the unique beauty of each life lost and the importance of nurturing all life so that it can thrive.

Hot ‘n Cold all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring.

I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats.

As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg.

Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing.

Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point.

And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather.

Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

The Massapequa School District’s Adult Education Program is in the process of putting together its program for the fall and is looking to expand its course offerings. While the program offers many evening classes in technology, crafts, fine arts, foreign language, finance, fitness, recreation and special interests, suggestions for new topics are always welcome.

’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings.

How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come.

In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals.

BUDDY HOCKEY - Teens for CP hosted Buddy Hockey at the Cerebral Palsy Nassau Center recently. Both the teens and their buddies were ready for a great time!

Plainedge High School’s Class of 2018 will be led by valedictorian Brianne DiFede and salutatorian Courtney Kremler.

Graduating with more than 43 college credits, Brianne has been recognized as an AP Scholar and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

She is a member of the school’s National, Math, English and Science honor societies, International Club, Mathletes, Best Buddies and Relay for Life Committee, and serves as secretary for Forensics

Club and SADD Club.

Brianne is a captain of the varsity lacrosse team and has been named Academic All-American, as well as a Scholar-Athlete. In her spare time she has earned the bronze award in Girl Scouts and volunteers at Northwell Health. She intends to major in nursing at Molloy College.

Also named an AP Scholar, Courtney has taken 10 Advanced Placement courses. She is vice president of the English Honor Society and an author for the Newspaper Club, as

well as a member of the National, Science and Math honor societies.

Courtney serves as a community ambassador for We Connect the Dots nonprofit organization and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She also has earned the bronze award in the Girl Scouts and has been chosen to attend the National Student Youth Leadership Conference.

Courtney intends to major in in neuroscience at the University of Bristol in the fall.

Heart recipients - combat wounded service members who have transitioned back into civilian life,” Councilman Hand said.

“Combat wounded warriors have made great sacrifices to ensure our freedoms but unfortunately, these sacrifices often go unrecognized.”

“The Town’s veterans deserve the continuing support of the entire community for the extraordinary sacrifices they’ve made to keep America the land of the free,” Mayor Pravato said.

“These designated parking spots are just one small way we can give back to those who have given so much for all of us.”

Evangeline King said Fairfield’s third-, fourthand fifth-graders can sign up for lunchtime Makerspace sessions and are free to pursue any project of their choosing. While there are many technology-based resources, she said some students simply like to build whatever they can imagine using Legos or recycled materials like cardboard boxes and tubes.

“It is student-driven,” Ms. King said, adding that they can work independently or in groups. “They are pursuing their own interests. The whole point is to spark their creativity.”

Ms. King added that Makerspace fosters a growth mindset.

The activities are engaging yet challenging, and students might not always solve a problem on the first try.

Her philosophy is, “You try, and if you fail, you try again.”

The Massapequa School District Board of Education awarded a high school diploma to Vietnam War veteran Michael John Brigante Jr. at its meeting on April 12th.

The New York State Education Department’s Operation Recognition program allows school districts to award diplomas to veterans who actively served in the military

during the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War eras. Mr. Brigante, a Massapequa resident for more than 40 years, served active duty in the Army in 1961, and remained in the Army National Guard until 1966.

With his family in attendance, Mr. Brigante was presented with his Massapequa High School diploma by

Board of Education President Timothy Taylor, Superintendent Lucille Iconis and Executive Assistant for Guidance Paul Weber.

“It was an honor and a privilege to present the diploma to Mr. Brigante for the honorable service he provided to our nation,” Mr. Weber said.

Berner Supports To mark Autism Awareness Month, Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District observed Light it Up Blue Day on April 9th by literally lighting it up blue.

Filters were placed in the lights in the main office hallway, which is traveled by just about every student and staff member at some point each day.

Everyone was also encouraged to wear blue as part of the school’s effort to raise awareness.

Members of the Chief’s Challenge Club, under the direction of social worker Marisa Boulukos, made

posters that were hung throughout the first floor.

In an effort to make it a schoolwide initiative, Chief’s Challenge provided large blue paper puzzle pieces to each of the school’s more than 30 clubs to create their own messages of support. The puzzle piece is the symbol used to reflect the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The banners and puzzle pieces will remain hanging through April.

Ms. Boulukos said that the purpose of awareness month is to create acceptance among the

student body for people with autism in their school and in their lives. During homeroom, students watched a video that simulates the experiences of someone with autism.

Teams in the Winter 2 sports season raised $1,758 which was split between Autism Speaks, a national organization that supports people with autism, and the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America, which provides services to students in Massapequa’s life skills program.

Denise Baldinger, the district’s health chairwoman, said that the purpose of the collaborative program was to show the ninth-graders that there are ways to get help if they are dealing with any of these issues. Hearing it from their own peers, she said, is an effective way to get the message across.

• Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.)

• Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills.

• Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written).

• ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively.

• Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts).

• Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.

Robotics Team Wins testing it in the practice ring across from the robotics classroom. During the competition, they had to move mobile goals, which look like cones, into point zones and stack smaller cones on top.

“It was really a fun experience, how people from all different areas can come together for a friendly competition,” Billy said. “Our robot performed well and it was a really great way for us to end our time in the robotics club.”

Added Victoria of the competition, “You see so many different ideas. It’s cool to see how everyone can approach the same goal in a different way.”

Alex and Billy operated the controls during the tournament. They explained that there were a lot of mechanisms that all had to work simultaneously on the robot, making it a very challenging task.

Members of the robotics team say several of the courses they have taken in high school were beneficial including robotics, principles of engineering, automotive maintenance, computer aided design and

introduction to JavaScript.

Success in the competition required strong knowledge in both constructing and programming their robot. Dana explained that she had to write several hundred lines of code.

The Robo Chiefs qualified for the national competition because of its performance at the Vex Robotics zone regional qualifier at Adelphi University in January.

They also participated in competitions throughout the season at Farmingdale High School, Freeport High School, East Rockaway High School and The Harvey School in Katonah.

At the Vex regional qualifier at East Rockaway, the Robo Chiefs received the Excellence Award, which is given to the top overall team recognizing robot performance and design, teamwork and professionalism.

Mr. Swanson and Mr. Vanek said that the national championship is a testament to the hard work and preparation of the students.

This year’s keynote speaker was neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Testaiuti, a 1981 Massapequa High School graduate. After he spoke to the entire ninth grade, students attended breakout sessions with the presenters who each shared his or her journey

from Massapequa student to professional.

“I liked how there were people from a lot of different careers,” student Samantha Otranto said.

“We’re in our first year of high school, so we need to start thinking about our futures soon.”

Students said they received great advice from the speakers that could be applicable in any career such as the importance of time management and communication skills.

Joey Casali said he learned that while it’s good to have career goals, it is equally important to have options.

That starts with exploring different interests in high school. Jackie Romeo added that colleges don’t just look for students with good grades, but want to see someone who is wellrounded with a resume full of extracurricular and community service activities.

Making Digital Music Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District welcomed composer and producer Brent Daniels during the week of April 16th-20th.

Through a partnership with the PTA’s Arts in Education committee, he worked with students

in Janice Abel’s general music classes in teaching them how to create digital music.

Mr. Daniels taught students about musical concepts such as loop and sequence, then invited students to record various sounds and phrases.

He used his electronic keyboard to alter those sounds and used them to create an original song for each class. At the end of each session, Mr. Daniels reminded students about the importance of getting a good education.

Massapequa High School’s robotics team can now add a national championship to its list of accomplishments.

Students competed in the CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa from April 2nd-7th.

The Robo Chiefs were tournament champions in the Open Division along with Beijing Bayi High School from Beijing, China and DC West Community Schools in Valley, Nebraska.

Massapequa was part of a three-team alliance, in which two robots from the group compete in a given match against a pair of robots from another alliance.

Competing team members included seniors Victoria Bal, Emily Clugston, Dana Colletti, Evan Donohue, Billy Dougherty, Jessica Monaghan and Alex Schmadtke, under the direction of robotics team advisers Matthew Swanson and Brian Vanek. The students spent several months working after school to build and perfect their robot, repeatedly
