Making Days A Little Brighter The creativity of Massapequa High School students will help make the days a little brighter for children on Long Island battling cancer. Students in Penny Schneider’s Studio in Sculpture class are designing a puppet theater set for The Morgan Center, a preschool in Brightwaters that provides a safe learning and socialization environment for youngsters undergoing cancer treatment. The high school students worked either independently or in small

groups to create puppet theater sets. The 10 models were displayed in the classroom and students, teachers and administrators were welcome to stop in and vote on their favorites. Ms. Schneider said that the finalists will be sent to the Morgan Center, which will select the winning design. The full-size set will then be built by technology students in James DeSantis’ class. “There are so many good designs, they’re going to have a very hard time selecting the winner,” Ms. Schneider

said. “The student did such a good job.” The set will provide a new activity for children at The Morgan Center to put on their own puppet shows. Ms. Schneider said that because many children at the preschool have compromised immune systems, the art students will also provide them with puppets that can be easily cleaned. To raise money for those, they will be selling Hope Rocks featuring their personalized designs.

stretching, and everything in between. For every 10 exercise videos that students watch and move to, they earn a food pack that is delivered to malnourished children in places such as Uganda. Third grade teacher Kimberly Kelly said that students spent the month making connections to the children they are helping by learning about holiday traditions and customs around the world.
