Neighborhood News: St. James Five-Mile

More than 400 runners and walkers took part in the St. James Certified 5 Mile Challenge and 5K Fun Run on Saturday, April 13, 2024, raising $40,000 for the new Ronald McDonald House at Stony Brook Hospital.

“We are so grateful to all the Long Islanders – runners, walkers and families – that came out to support our work to build the first Ronald McDonald House in Suffolk County,” said Cynthia Lippe, Chair of the Committee for the Stony Brook house. “This has been a labor of love for many years – and we are near the finish line, just like in a race.”

Among the runners was Wendy Lau, of Northport, whose family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House while her son Tolby received treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

“Running eased the reality of my son’s AML diagnosis in April of 2014. It’s been exactly 10 years. He is well and experiencing the life of a healthy 13 year old,” said Wendy. “I run in celebration, in thanks, in remembrance and for joy.”

The new Ronald McDonald House at Stony Brook Children's is set to break ground on April 30, 2024. This will be the first Ronald McDonald House located in Suffolk County, and only the second on Long Island. The other Ronald McDonald House is in New Hyde Park in Nassau County, located adjacent to Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Bring Mom Breakfast In Bed

This Mother’s Day

There may be no better way to start Mother’s Day than serving mom breakfast in bed! If she loves a traditional hearty morning meal, this recipe for “Mixed Berry French Toast” courtesy of Taste of Home (tasteofhome.com) is sure to please.

Directions:

Whisk together the first 6 ingredients. Place bread cubes in a 13 x 9-inch or 3-quart baking dish coated with cooking spray. Pour egg mixture over top. Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Remove berries from freezer and French toast from refrigerator and let stand while oven heats. Bake French toast, covered, 30 minutes.

6 large eggs

1 3⁄4 cups fat-free milk

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1⁄4 teaspoon salt

1 loaf (1 pound) French bread, cubed

1 package (12 ounces) frozen unsweetened mixed berries

2 tablespoons cold butter

1⁄3 cup packed brown sugar

Confectioners’ sugar and maple syrup (optional)

In a small bowl, cut butter into brown sugar until crumbly. Top French toast with berries; sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Bake, uncovered, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. If desired, dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve with syrup.

It’sa real “dog day afternoon”! The Long Island Kennel Club welcomes families and their fur children to the Long Island Island Kennel Club Show on Sunday, May 19, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the beautiful Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. This year’s show follows the world-famous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show earlier in the week.

The show will celebrate everything canine, from impeccable show dogs and trick-dog demonstrations to doggie dock diving and an agility obstacle course. Plus, fun-filled events and attractions make this event a treat for everyone who attends! Read on for a list of happenings at this year's show!

• K-9 Police Dog Demonstration: On Sunday at 11 a.m., members of the NYPD Transit Bureau Canine Unit will show how their dogs take down perpetrators and respond to their handlers’ commands.

The 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach

BethpageFederal Credit Union and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce the final performer line-up for the muchanticipated 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, taking place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024, from 10 AM – 3 PM.

The United States Navy Blue Angels, which headlined the very first Bethpage Air Show back in 2004, will return to Long Island to headline the 20th Anniversary show. This

will be the Blue Angels’ 10th headliner performance for what has grown into one of the most respected air shows in the country.

Military performers joining the Blue Angels include the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the A-10C Thunderbolt II Demo Team, and the U.S. Navy F-35C Demo Team. Civilian performers Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; the world-famous Skytypers; Warbird Thunder Airshows; Farmingdale State College Flying Rams; Long Island’s

the App Store and Google Play.

The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is one of the largest, most respected and most popular air shows in the country. Over 240,000 fans attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach in 2022, when the Blue Angels last performed during a stormy weekend show. Last year, over 419,000 fans attended.

FabFoodLI is ran by Sheena Colon, a wife, mother, certified growth coach and social media content creator who loves sharing fabulous culinary experiences. From fine dining, brunch spots to mom-and-pop restaurants, she has been on an exploration of the Long Island food scene, and her mission is to share as many fabulous food-finds and the hidden gems on Long Island to her followers.

She grew up in Huntington and eventually landed a job as a teenager in Huntington Village. During her time there, she lived for her lunch breaks, making each one an adventure– visiting restaurants like Little Vincent’s, Oaxaca, and places like Meehan’s. Through the years she found herself trying different restaurants and snapping pictures of what she ate along the way.

Her husband would ultimately pivot her decision to make something out of her compilation of photographs that have sat in her camera roll, undiscovered. “When I was dating my husband, he noticed my habit of taking pictures of my food at dinner,” said Sheena. “He suggested that if I was going to insist my phone or camera eat first, that at the very least I should do something with all these food pictures.”

With a newfound revelation, she made the decision to start FabFoodLI on Instagram in 2020, although she had no idea about the foodie community yet or what being an influencer was at the time. Her page has seen much success and she feels the best part of what she does is the connections she’s made with business owners. “I truly love when someone tells me that they came to my page for a date night idea or where to get brunch next,” Sheena said. “Running FabFoodLI has opened doors to so many other opportunities and connections that I could not have ever imagined. I want everyone I have a chance to connect with to be Favored And Blessed and enjoy the food experience!”

Steven and Lindsey Surico are the faces behind DrinkLongIslandNY. Steven was born and raised on Long Island, and Lindsey not too far away in New Jersey. Both currently Long Island Locals now, the two met in California, where they both lived at the time. Lindsey was amazed by all that Long Island had to offer, the beautiful waterfront bars, unique restaurants, and countless vineyards sprawling up and down the North Fork. “We found ourselves traveling all over the island each weekend visiting as many places as we could,” said Steven. “After a visit to Del Vino Vineyard in Northport, we came up with the idea to create an Instagram account to show all our fellow Long Islander's the best spots to enjoy a drink, along with any places we truly enjoy…and just like that, @drinklongislandny was born.”

“Giving back to the community was always important to us,” they said. “Many of our posts inform our followers of specials that restaurants and bars are running, whether it be happy hours, weekly specials, holiday deals, or events. Our goal is to help save Long Islander's a buck while they still have a great experience.” Additionally, the page frequently runs contests, where followers can win gift cards, tickets to events, and merchandise! How To Build A Better Burger

Backyard barbecue season is starting to heat up. Although many people grill all year long, grilling season kicks into high gear in spring and summer. Burgers will always be a quintessential grilling fare. It should come as no surprise that the month of May is National Hamburger Month. That’s likely due to Memorial Day weekend — which many view as the unofficial start of summer — being one of the first times of the year people begin grilling burgers. Despite burgers’ popularity, it’s easy to make mistakes when preparing them. These tips can help anyone build a better burger.

Use Freshly Ground Meat

Buying ready-made ground meat (of any variety) is taking a gamble because you don’t know when it was ground, how many animals it came from or how it was handled. By freshly grinding the meat at home you will have greater control over the cut of meat and the fat content. Personally ground meat will be fresher, especially when you get nice cuts of meat directly from your local butcher. Top chefs suggest dicing cold meat into chunks and freezing for about 10 minutes prior to grinding for the best results.

Fat Is Key

For the most juicy, flavorful burger, you’ll want a ratio of 80 percent meat to 20 percent fat. Some people like to eat lean, but with a burger, the fat will be necessary and it’s better to select leaner meats for other dishes.

Don’t Overwork The Meat

Handling the burger patties too much can lead to dense, tough burgers. Gently shape the burgers into round, 1-inch thick, flat discs. To prevent the burgers from rounding in the middle during cooking, press a dimple with your thumb in the center of the patty to help it cook evenly. It’s a smart idea to weigh each patty to ensure uniformity of size and even cooking.

Don’t Add Salt Early On

Salt added to the ground meat before it’s shaped can draw the liquid out of the meat, leaving a dry burger behind. Sprinkle salt sparingly while it is cooking for flavoring.

Avoid Overcooking

Most health authorities recommend not leaving any pink meat in a burger made from ground meat. According to BBC Good Food, burgers can be cooked for 5 to 6 minutes on each side for medium and 8 to 9 minutes per side for well done. For the best results, use a food thermometer to check internal temperature. The USDA says ground meat, whether it’s pork, veal, beef, or lamb, should be cooked to 160 F

Flip As Desired

The cooking resource Serious Eats debunked the myth that burgers should only be flipped once. Flipping the burger repeatedly, as often as once every 15 seconds, encourages faster, more even internal cooking and can dramatically reduce cooking time.

Keep The Patties Separate

Let everyone build their own burgers, as keeping the cooked meat away from the burger buns for as long as possible will reduce the chances of the juices making the buns soggy. Soft, squishy buns tend to make for good burger eating, as they will not overwhelm the meat with too much crusty bread. The smell of grilling burgers is in the air. Ensure that every burger is a masterpiece by utilizing some important cooking tips.

Greenport’s Beloved Waterfront Landmark

Claudio’s has a rich history and is a household name for us on Long Island. Manuel Claudio fell in love with Greenport in 1854, when the ship he was working on docked in its beautiful harbor. Sixteen years later, in 1870, he permanently set foot ashore, never to sail again. With the money he saved through his years at sea, he opened Claudio’s Tavern. Throughout the years, the tavern underwent numerous changes and in 1886 he oversaw the installation of a magnificent Victorian bar, which is still there today.

The establishment was the oldest same family-owned restaurant in the country, but was sold in 2018.

Whether a first time guest or a loyal repeat customer, your time at Claudio’s will be memorable. They focus on quality fresh ingredients, generous portions, local wines and warm hospitality. Their parking lots are open for public parking and their marina, which can accommodate boats up to 120 feet, is also open (weather dependent), for docking!

Despite their diminutive size, blueberries pack quite a powerful, healthy punch. Blueberries contain a compound known as anthocyanin, which gives them their blue hue but also contributes to their nutritious properties. For example, the Mayo Clinic notes that studies have found consumption of foods that are high in anthocyanins can help individuals lower their risk of developing coronary heart disease. In addition, blueberries are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber, making them worthy of addition to anyone's diet.
