RACING FOR HEART HEALTH AT BELMONT ELEMENTARY

Fun, physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle were all key components of the annual fun run hosted by Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District on Oct. 2. Students from all grade levels ran alongside classmates on the outdoor track. Each year, the physical education teachers hold the run to remind students to stay active and heart healthy. They discussed different activities and eating habits with classes before heading to the cafeteria to enjoy a nutritious breakfast together. Photo courtesy of North Babylon School District

Town of Babylon Hosts Successful Small Business Networking Night

The Town of Babylon proudly hosted its inaugural Small Business Networking Night on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Babylon Town Hall, organized by Councilman Anthony Manetta and the Town of Babylon Chamber of Commerce

Collaborative. This vibrant event brought together local entrepreneurs, business owners, and community members to foster connections and celebrate the spirit of small business in Babylon.

Attendees enjoyed live

music and entertainment from a DJ while sampling delicious offerings from an array of food trucks featuring BBQ, pasta, doughnuts, and coffee. Representatives from the Small Business Administration (SBA), PSEG, National Grid,

and various chambers of commerce were also on hand to provide valuable resources and support for local businesses.

Councilman Anthony Manetta expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you to everyone who

joined us, especially our hardworking Chambers of Commerce who contribute so much to our local community.” This successful event showcased the Town of Babylon’s commitment to supporting small businesses, promoting collaboration, and strengthening local economic growth.

The Town of Babylon looks forward to hosting more networking events in the future to continue nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit within the community.

Long Islanders Donate 25,000 Meals To PSEG Long Island’s Power To Feed Long Island Initiative - Helping Local Families Struggling With Food Insecurity

PSEG Long Island thanks generous Long Islanders for helping make its fourth annual PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island initiative another success. In the seven collection events that took place from Memorial Day through the end of September, the equivalent of 25,000 meals was collected for Island Harvest Food Bank and distributed to members of the community through local food pantries and soup kitchens. In the past four years, this initiative has collected and distributed the equivalent of nearly 130,000 meals to people on Long Island struggling with food insecurity.

Breaking down the results, 14,736 pounds of food was collected at the seven sites, along with $6,350 collected online and in cash donations and gift cards. The breakdown in each area is as follows:

“We are grateful to the people of Long Island for their kindness and compassion in supporting PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island food collection initiative this year,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO of PSEG Long Island. “In each community we visited, we met wonderful people with a genuine desire to help their neighbors in need. Our employees stepped up once again by donating more than 650 pounds of food, which equates to more than 550 meals, and volunteering at the collection events throughout the summer. This is one of the ways PSEG Long Island supports our community, along with providing safe and reliable power.”

“PSEG Long Island’s continued support of Island Harvest’s efforts in addressing the needs of people who are food insecure once again proves that partnerships between companies and nonprofits are indeed making a difference in the lives of our neighbors faced with uncertainty,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “We are grateful

North Babylon High School Receives AP Honors

North Babylon High School has been named a bronze member of the 2024 Advanced Placement School Honor Roll, with 40 percent of seniors taking at least one AP Exam during high school, 27 percent scoring a three or higher on at least one AP Exam and 15 percent taking five or more AP exams. In addition, the school has been also recognized with an AP Access Award for providing all students

the chance to participate in AP, including those from underrepresented populations.

In 2024, North Babylon students took a total of 686 Advanced Placement examinations and were offered 22 Advanced Placement courses taught by 21 teachers. North Babylon High School Principal Dr. Jonathan Klomp said, “The College Board’s recognition of our school are reflections of the

outstanding dedication of our Advanced Placement teachers and the remarkable achievements of our students. I am incredibly proud of the commitment and hard work that have brought us to this moment. Our AP teachers have gone above and beyond to create opportunities for our students, helping our students reach new heights of academic achievement.”

to the PSEG Long Island employees who worked so hard to make Power to Feed Long Island a success, and we extend our thanks to our longtime partner Stop & Shop for hosting the food drives, and of course, special thanks to the numerous Long Islanders for their generosity too.”

“Stop & Shop is proud to support Island Harvest in their mission to combat food insecurity across Long Island,” said Daniel Wolk, external communications manager, Stop & Shop. “PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed food drives held at Stop & Shop locations across Nassau and Suffolk were a great success and will help our neighbors in need. We want to thank our

caring customers for their support and donations to this important initiative, as we work together to fight hunger and help our local community members.”

Power to Feed Long Island was created by PSEG Long Island in 2021 to raise awareness about the issue of food insecurity on Long Island and to provide the public with venues where they live and work to donate food and personal care items to their neighbors. Food collection events were held at seven Stop & Shop supermarkets this year in Carle Place, East Northport, Levittown, Massapequa, Oceanside, South Setauket and West Babylon from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September.

PSEG Long Island created this event during the pandemic and continued to hold events each summer because the need continues to be great. Summer is a difficult time of year for food banks, pantries and programs because vacations cause a decrease in donations and collection drives are not as prevalent. It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. CSHL & Aboff’s Paints Announce Paint & Donate Campaign

This October, supporting breast cancer research is as easy as buying paint. Throughout the month, for every gallon of premium paint sold at Aboff’s Paint stores and online at aboffs.com, the company will generously donate a portion of the proceeds to support breast cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL).

The original Aboff’s Paints Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign raised over $10,000 for CSHL breast cancer research in 2012. In

2023, the two Long Island institutions renewed their partnership and raised over $40,000.

“Breast cancer awareness is near and dear to all of us here at Aboff’s,” said Aboff’s Paints owner and CSHL Corporate Advisory Board member Matthew Aboff. “We are delighted to renew our partnership with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for October 2024 and hope to make this year’s campaign our most successful yet.”

“I’m saving about $1,800 a year in energy costs with LED lighting.”*
—Guy Brogna, All Music Inc, Plainview

Meet Guy. He’s a local small business owner, rock bassist, and fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier.

From Army Basic Training To Senior Year Of High School

North Babylon High School senior Jake Cilento, who completed Army basic training the summer before his senior year, with North Babylon High School Principal Dr. Jonathan Klomp. Photo courtesy of North Babylon School District

North Babylon High School senior Jake Cilento already knows where he is headed after graduation. That’s because he completed his Army basic training over the summer before returning to his senior year of high school.

Cilento enrolled in the Split Training Option, which allows high school juniors to join the Army Reserves or the Army National Guard with parent or guardian permission, training as a senior with a local unit one weekend per month. Cilento completed his basic training for 10 weeks this summer at Fort Sill in Oklahoma.

Cilento spoke with a U.S. Army recruiter when they visited North Babylon High School last year and decided this was the best option. “I always knew I wanted to serve my country,” he said. “I knew I wanted that extra discipline and it’s already completely changed my life.”

After finishing his senior year, Cilento will complete his advanced individual training. He will be stationed in Fort Gregg-Adams in Virginia. Cilento will be part of the Army’s transportation unit as a transportation management coordinator. “I am excited about this field because the skills translate to [the] real world and I’m learning a career I can do after the Army,” Cilento said.
