The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

The signs of stress today are everywhere. One only has to travel on our roads to observe the high levels it has reached. Drivers cut you off, constantly honk their horns in a frenzy, and freely give their finger salute to all. How about our supermarkets where everyone jockeys into line at the deli counter or later at the checkout line. Sound familiar? The list could go on and on.

a guiding support for me, and I believe it can be for you. I suggest that after you read it once, reflect on it then read it again. Reflections

So how does one avoid this mayhem and still maintain a calm, controlled mindset? What I would like to share with you is a different approach to everyday life on Long Island, or anywhere else you may travel.

A man was rowing his boat upstream on a very misty morning. Suddenly, he saw another boat coming downstream, not trying to avoid him. It was coming straight at him. He shouted, “Be careful! Be careful!” but his boat was almost sunk. The man became very angry, and began to shout at the other person, to give him a piece of his mind. But when he looked closely, he saw that no one was in the other boat.

The short piece that you are about to read has been

Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace

So, what does all that mean to you? Perhaps the next time that you get angry or upset with another person or group, relax and take several deep breaths. For a moment, envision yourself in your boat going downstream and in complete control of everything important. In most cases, you will soon begin to relax and feel much better about yourself and the world in general. So…are you ready to begin your personal journey? Afterwards, you will be glad that you did. And always remember, the journey through life begins with a simple step. Best of luck in your travels.

The Stresses of Everyday Life

When Life Gives You Lemons impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

Lee Learns Lessons Students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District learned about the importance of persistence, compassion and effort during an entertaining and educational assembly

hosted by a representative of The NED Show program. The program taught students that “there’s a champion in every kid” by using props including a yo-yo and a character named Ned, whose letters

are an acronym for three key lessons: Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do Your Best. The assembly was a part of Lee Avenue’s ongoing character education curriculum.

turkey in gravy, baked ziti or Swedish meatballs. Entertainment during the luncheon will be provided by talented Hicksville High School music and theater students who will present musical numbers and acting skits prepared especially for guests. Tickets are available for purchase to Hicksville

senior citizens at $6 each during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Hicksville Administration Building Reception Desk located at 200 Division Ave. For additional information, residents can contact the Office of Community Services at 516.733.2190.

National Merit Finalists Seniors Aashini Shah and Pantho Sayed from W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District have been recognized as finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. To be counted among the nation’s 15,000 finalists, Shah and Sayed had to submit a detailed scholarship application including their academic record, participation in extracurricular activities and community engagement, leadership ability, employment, and a record of honors and awards. They also had to achieve an SAT score equivalent to their PSAT score, maintain their prestigious academic performance and receive a recommendation from a high school official. The seniors will be notified this spring as to whether they are among the 7,500 students who have been selected to receive awards and scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments. Members of the NMS committee will evaluate the seniors’ academic records, the curriculum and grading system at their school, their SAT scores, high school officials’ recommendations, information about their activities and leadership, and their essays. As valedictorian of the Class of 2018, Shah balances a rigorous schedule of Advanced Placement

and college-level courses while immersing herself in an assortment of extracurricular activities, athletics and community involvement. With a passion for science, she conducted research on the chemical compound trifluoromethyl at Stony Brook University. Her research garnered her second place at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and advancement to the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Shah is a member of numerous honor societies, including National, History, Mathematics, Science, English, Spanish and Tri-M Music, for which she serves as secretary. She holds leadership positions as president of the Multicultural Club and Science Olympiads, co-director of the role committee for DECA, and editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper, The Vanguard. She also plays violin in the school’s pit orchestra and performs at local nursing homes as a violist with the Clarke Cabaret. Athletically, she is captain of the bowling and badminton teams and plays on the varsity tennis team. Outside of school, Shah tutors middle school students and serves on the teen advisory board at the East Meadow Public Library. She plans to major in chemical engineering in college this fall. “It was exciting to find out I was named a finalist,” said Shah. “This

distinction is a rewarding reflection of my hard work and an opportunity to earn a scholarship for college.” Earning the distinction of Clarke’s salutatorian, Pantho Sayed is a wellrounded student enrolled in a variety of Advanced Placement and collegelevel courses and actively involved in the high school and community. Among his school involvement, he is vice president of the National and French honor societies and a member of the Mathematics, Science and English honor societies. He is also covice president of DECA, a lawyer for the school’s mock trial team, a member of the school’s Red Cross Club and a saxophonist in the jazz ensemble. Within the community, Sayed volunteers at Nassau University Medical Center, where he assists in labs, performs administrative duties and stocks nursing stations. He also aids teachers and organizes programs at the Long Island Muslim Society mosque in East Meadow. “It was a little overwhelming hearing I was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program,” said Sayed. “I didn’t think I’d advance, and it’s an honor to be one of the selected few to receive this opportunity.” Sayed aspires to be a lawyer and plans to study political science in college. The district congratulates both seniors on becoming finalists in this prestigious program.

The Little Mermaid

Transporting the audience to a magical kingdom under the sea, W.T. Clarke High School’s student acting troupe, Lights Up Productions, gave a riveting performance about a young mermaid’s desire to explore the world above when they presented Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” on March 1st-3rd. Inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale and classic animated film, “The Little Mermaid” is a beautiful story about love and adventure. Beneath the sea, King Triton’s youngest daughter, Ariel, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above. She bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. When the

deal isn’t what it seems, Ariel needs the help of her friends, Flounder, Scuttle and Sebastian, to restore order under the sea. On March 1st, prior to the main performances, the school held a Senior Citizens’ Dinner Theater, sponsored by the W.T. Clarke PTA in collaboration with the East Meadow Kiwanis and Clarke Theater Arts Parents Association. Community residents were invited for a delicious Italian dinner with musical performances by the W.T. Clarke High School orchestra and a special viewing of this year’s spring musical. Dinner services and ushering were provided by members of the W.T. Clarke Middle School Builder’s Club and

W.T. Clarke High School Key Club. The Lights Up Productions cast and crew would like to express their gratitude to director and choreographer Kristen Norwark, vocal director Rachel Fogel, the design team, the stagehands, the tech squad under the guidance of technical director Elliot Oppenheim, the orchestra pit – led by W.T. Clarke High School Orchestra Director Steven Barbieri – and the district’s building and central administrators for helping to make the spring musical a success. Caring For Granite Countertops

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Tips For A 100 Percent Hassle-Free Move

(NAPSI)—Moving can be a hassle, stressful and emotional. If you’re considering a move, know you’re not alone. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 40 million Americans moved in 2016. That’s a lot of moving. “Every year, people take on the frustrating experience of moving,” said Adam Doron, CEO of Unpakt, an online platform designed to eliminate stress from the moving experience. “What many don’t realize is that moving doesn’t have to be difficult. There are resources available to ensure an easy, hassle-free move.” According to Doron, the main challenge when moving is guaranteeing

the final price of a move, as moving prices can increase on move day with no notice. Another challenge? Verifying that a mover is licensed and insured. He suggests using a reliable online service to compare guaranteed, transparent prices from prescreened moving companies, as well as customer reviews. That allows people to manage and control their move from start to finish. It’s also beneficial to have a third party handling payments and issues. “Working with an online platform like Unpakt means you can avoid the hassle of entrusting an unknown mover with getting your belongings to your new home,” said Doron. “Unpakt enables

consumers to compare verified, reputable movers and enjoy a stress-free move. “For your next move, get online. Visit Unpakt and instantly compare guaranteed prices from prescreened moving companies. It’s easy to book your move online, just like you would a hotel or flight. We want to become the ‘go to’ online comparison site for everyone’s move.”

Big, Colorful Ideas For Small Spaces ( N A P S I ) — T h e C(NAPSI)—Making a small room appear larger can be as simple as using color creatively. To add some breathing room to a compact space, all you need are some colorful ideas. “Color is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to transform the look and feel of a room,” says David Bromstad, HGTV® star and celebrity interior designer. “When used in a few well-chosen

places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. Paint a statement wall that draws attention away from the size of your space and toward something beautiful and vibrant. Bright or bold colors work well, as the wall can appear to recede,

creating the illusion of space. Go big with lighter and softer colors. In areas beyond the feature wall, use lighter and softer colors to make the space seem larger. Light blues and greens add significant light subtly to a room. Coordinate your colors. Stretch your space and maximize impact by using color to coordinate your rooms and decor. HGTV® HOME by SherwinWilliams offers precoordinated collections of color, paint and wallpaper. The color palettes can be used to ensure that your walls, furniture and accessories help create a cohesive look. Reflect upon something. Placed opposite a window or side by side, mirrors can spread light throughout the room to make spaces feel larger. A tall mirror draws the eye up, making ceilings look taller. When angled toward your room’s focal wall, a mirror can also create the illusion of depth. Paint something unexpected. Think beyond your walls and consider painting your mailbox or address numbers on your home, a stairway banister or a piece of furniture. Add a colorful punctuation point by transforming a bedroom nightstand bright blue or a desk chair in an unexpected orange. Everything else in the room will appear larger. “Clever use of color adds the illusion of space and injects personality into it as well. That’s what’s great about color; you can dramatically alter the look of a room while expressing yourself in a fun way,” Bromstad adds.

Five Ways To Protect Your Vision (NAPSI)—Did you know that women are at greater risk for blindness and vision problems? The National Eye Institute, part of NIH, reminds women, especially those over age 40, to make their eye health a priority by taking five simple steps to protect their sight. Get a dilated eye exam. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic conditions, and not smoking can lower your

risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs. Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet

rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness. When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. These steps can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent vision loss and blindness from eye disease. For more information, visit www.nei.nih.gov/hvm. Be Happy Pleasure is Nature’s test, her sign of approval. When man is happy, he is in harmony with himself and with his environment. Oscar Wilde

Plan For Your Retirement (NAPSI)—If you’re like 82 percent of Americans, you may be concerned about retirement, according to the Employment Benefit Research Institute. Fortunately, you may have a brighter future if you heed five hints from Ray LeVitre, CFP, author of “20 Retirement Decisions You Need To Make Right Now” as well as founder and managing partner of Net Worth Advisory Group—a firm specializing in retirement financial planning. 1. Track your expenses

now. Gradually adjust your expenditures toward the budget you’ll have in retirement. 2. Start living like a retiree. Change your lifestyle to reflect how it might be in retirement. That might mean downsizing your home, reducing your leisure travel or driving a more efficient car. 3. Increase your savings. Within 15 years of retirement, contribute a minimum of 15 percent of earnings toward retirement.

Three Simple Tips

4. Explore your Social Security options. Postponing benefits until age 70 can significantly boost lifetime income. Explore spousal benefits, too. 5. Don’t invest too conservatively. A broadly diversified, well-balanced portfolio of equities, bonds and cash offers the best opportunity to maintain the necessary growth of capital while minimizing volatility.

the right way to pack household objects such as dishes, photos, rugs, books and plants and also explain how to arrange these objects in your new home to achieve a fresh designer look. • Free Online Guide— Since every move is unique, you should look for a guide like the CableMover guide that features timelines and checklists that can be customized to your needs. You can get information on moving supplies, design

tips, home security, phone and Internet service, moving with kids or pets or moving an elderly loved one. You can even get quotes from movers. • Moving Hacks— Staying connected is key to getting settled in. It’s easy to set up your Internet, TV and phone service in advance, with help from CableMover, so you’re already connected when you move in.
