Town Crews Demolish Abandoned Zombie Home

As local neighbors watched in celebration, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and the Town’s Highway and Buildings crew to commence the demolition of a dilapidated zombie home on Alhambra Road in Massapequa. This longtime eyesore was recently granted for demolition following years of neglect and complaints from neighbors.

“This property has been cited with multiple violations for lack of maintenance and deplorable conditions after years of neglect,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Inspectors repeatedly found various signs of neglect, from severely damaged or even missing walls, to destroyed and collapsed ceilings, as well as

overall deterioration. After earning court approval, we are removing this neighborhood eyesore and paving the way for a new home in our community.”

Town inspections discovered a variety of code violations, including overgrown vegetation, deterioration or lack of walls and/or insulation, debris strewn throughout both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. While the condition of the property worsened over time, the Town’s Quality of Life Taskforce continued all efforts to keep the property safe to the surrounding neighborhood while pursuing legal action.

“The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we’ve now successfully demolished more than 30 homes since

its inception,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Through the diligence of our Town team – our building and legal professionals – we have been tremendously successful in saving our communities from these types of eyesores and protecting the quality of life of our residents.”

The Town Code Enforcement Bureau of the Department of Planning and Development is charged with the enforcement of all codes, rules and regulations pertaining to zoning, housing and public safety. It is expressly designed to handle requests of citizens regarding possible violations. To file a complaint, or to register a zombie property in your neighborhood, please visit www.oysterbaytown.com/ codeenforcement.

A long-standing zombie home in the Massapequa community is demolished as Supervisor Saladino joined with Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and members of the Town’s Highway Department to initiate its demolition.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a moment that serves as a powerful reminder that there are steps we all must take in looking out for loved ones, the people in our community, and those who have been impacted by this leading cause of death. Suicide continues to be an urgent public health matter with nearly 50,000 people dying by suicide and 1.6 million people attempting suicide in the United States in 2022 (the most current data available).

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a leader in this work, invites the public to join our growing movement and take action to save lives during this

awareness month and beyond. It’s time to take one big step together.

Since 2002, millions of people have attended the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALKS in communities across the country, raising awareness and funds that go toward education programs, advocacy efforts, and scientific research that reveals how we can save more lives. By walking with others, we find comfort in knowing we are not alone, and that we are connected through great purpose to healing and support. So join us – as parents, neighbors, family members, classmates and colleagues – at our

Receiver Pravato

Reminds Residents Of Mortgage Satisfaction Or New Homeowner Notification

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes, Jeffrey Pravato, reminds residential property owners that it is essential to notify his office upon satisfying their mortgage.

In addition, Receiver Pravato encourages residents who recently purchased a home, condominium or co-op unit, or recently refinanced, to be sure that notification in writing is sent to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771-1539 or email receiveroftaxes@ oysterbay-ny.gov.

“This will ensure that tax bills are received promptly

by the homeowner,” said Tax Receiver Pravato. “A homeowner relying on a bank, attorney, or Nassau County to notify the Tax Office may find there is a delay in billing the homeowner directly, which can lead to the imposition of a late payment penalty.”

“When writing, property owners should include the legal property description, including the school district, section, block, and lot numbers, as well as the name and address to whom tax bills should be directed. In the case of condominiums, the building and unit number should be noted,” added

Tax Receiver Pravato.

Residents may also report their information in person by visiting the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at Town Hall North at 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay or Town Hall South at 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Both offices are open daily from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents.

Property owners residing in incorporated villages must also notify their village assessor. Homeowners requiring further assistance should contact the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at (516) 624-6400.

Did You Know?

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

In a concerted effort to safeguard senior citizens from increasingly prevalent scams, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly and Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino are partnering to host a series of educational seminars this fall. The initiative aims to equip seniors and their caregivers with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognize, report, and combat fraudulent schemes.

Senior citizens, often targeted due to their limited familiarity with modern technology and scam tactics, face heightened risks of manipulation. Factors such as loneliness and medicationrelated vulnerabilities can exacerbate their susceptibility. Recognizing these challenges, District Attorney Donnelly and Supervisor Saladino are committed to providing essential information and resources to help protect the senior community.

• The seminars will

cover a range of topics including: Common scam tactics and how to identify them Steps to take if you suspect a scam

• Practical strategies for safeguarding personal information

• Resources for reporting fraudulent activities

These informative sessions will be held at community centers throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, ensuring easy access for residents. The fall schedule includes:

• Friday, September 20th at 2:30pm at the SyossetWoodbury Community Center, 7800 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury

• Friday, September 27th at 2pm at Marjorie Post Park Community Center, Unqua & Merrick Roads, Massapequa.

“Protecting our seniors is a top priority,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“By working with District Attorney Donnelly, we are taking proactive steps to ensure that our elderly community members are informed and empowered against deceitful tactics.”

District Attorney Donnelly stated, “My office is dedicated to combating fraud using all the tools at our disposal, and community engagement is vital to keeping Nassau County safe. Through these educational seminars, seniors will learn how to spot the warning signs of a scam and, most importantly, protect themselves and their finances. Working together with leaders like Supervisor Saladino, we can fight back against senior scams across our county and blunt their impact on our most vulnerable residents.” Residents are encouraged to attend these seminars to gain valuable insights and share the information with family and friends.

The Autumnal Equinox

Each September, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the autumnal equinox, which marks the official beginning of fall. In the Southern Hemisphere, spring is arriving at this time.

Each year there are two equinoxes, the vernal and the autumnal (March and September, respectively). Shortly after the autumnal equinox, days begin getting shorter and the nights get longer.

The word equinox is from the Latin “aequi,” meaning “equal,” and “nox” or “night.” That means that during each equinox the hours of day and night are nearly equal in length across the planet. During the equinox, the part of the Earth that is closest to the sun is the equator, explains History.com. That helps make night and day equal in length.

The fall equinox and the first day of autumn arrives on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 08:44 A.M. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox occurs at the same moment worldwide.
