Special One-Stop Passport Weekend
To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, September 15th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.
“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”
Requirements for applying for a passport
include:
• One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.
• Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last
six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).
• This service does NOT apply to Adult Renewals unless your Passport is expired for 5+ years.

blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.
The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does

Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D – Glen Cove) is joining forces with Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) Northeast Board Chairman John Carrion in support of the fourth annual Team DRI Walk/Run/Ride Event on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Starting at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, participants select their own pace and distance – whether by biking, walking, or running –on a route spanning the distance between the park and Jones Beach (or further or shorter – the participant chooses the distance) to raise funds and awareness for DRIF’s pursuit of a cure for type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. Last year’s event drew more than 125 participants and raised over $100,000, Carrion said. Since its inception

in 2019, the Walk/Run/ Ride has garnered over $250,000.
“I’m a big bike rider and I wanted to figure out how we could promote the cause,” he said of the “homegrown, organic” event. “We wanted to make it fun and not a black-tie dinner, not a golf outing –something where we can be outside and the kids can come. That’s how it started.” In subsequent years, the walkathon –and then the run – were added, creating the current form of this multifaceted philanthropic event.
Carrion first became involved in the fight to cure juvenile diabetes 22 years ago when his son was diagnosed at age 4. His first exposure was through events with Breakthrough T1D, formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and the community of families
and advocates he met there sparked his passion for advocacy.
“When my son got out of the hospital, there were thousands of people at this walk who were in the same boat as I was,” Carrion said. “That was the first time I didn’t feel alone.”

The festival will run from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

First Annual Thin Mint Sprint 5K And Family Fun Walk
Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) announced that their inaugural Thin Mint Sprint 5K Run and Family Fun Walk, will take place on Saturday, September 15th, 2024 at Jones Beach State Park on Field 1. This event will offer avid runners, walkers and families a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Jones Beach during Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend, all while raising money for the GSNC Family Partnership giving campaign.
“The Thin Mint Sprint has been something we’ve wanted to have for a while now, and we are excited to finally announce that registration is officially open!” said Rande Bynum, CEO of Girl Scouts
Nassau County. “We hope that this event will inspire families to gather in support of empowering the next generation of leaders as they enjoy the beauty of one of New York’s state parks. We hope to see this event become an annual funfilled tradition. Whether it is running in the 5K with friends, walking one mile with your family, or enjoying the activity fair, any participation will help provide girls with experiences that build courage, confidence and character.”

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition Continues Boat Smart, Boat Sober Initiative To Promote Water Safety
The Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is proudly continuing the Boat Smart, Boat Sober initiative, aimed at enhancing water safety awareness and practices among local boaters. Drinking while boating poses a significant health and safety risk. It is also 100% preventable.
In collaboration with the Town of Oyster Bay, MTAC is working to raise awareness of this issue and to help keep residents safe this summer while on the water. This includes reducing boating accidents by promoting safe boating practices, as well as fostering an environment that encourages healthy decision making. MTAC invites the community to join this important effort to make our waterways safer for everyone. It is important to realize that on the water, even small
amounts of substances may greatly impair one’s ability to function in three critical areas: balance, coordination, and judgment. Pair this with environmental stressors such as glare, heat, vibration, and engine noise, and you can become quickly fatigued, greatly slowing your reaction time.
Alcohol can affect a person’s ability to understand what is happening around them, which in-turn, can decrease their ability to react to an emergency or operate a boat. For new boaters, who are already unfamiliar with the water, the effects of alcohol or any substances may be even more dangerous. No one may operate a vessel on the waters of NYS while impaired or intoxicated through the consumption of either alcohol or drugs.

Walk In The Park” At Eisenhower Park Will Raise Awareness And Funds To Support Families Affected By Alzheimer’s And Research Toward A Cure
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is inviting residents to its Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park on Saturday, September 28 from 9 am to 12 pm at Eisenhower Park on Long Island (Field 6, 1899 Park Blvd., East Meadow, NY). New York baseball icon Dwight Gooden will be on hand to greet the walkers and participate in the opening ceremonies, as well as sign autographs and take pictures with eligible participants.
The walk is free to attend, however, walkers are encouraged to raise funds, either individually or as part of a team, through the walk website at www. alzfdn.org/walk. Proceeds raised will support AFA’s programs and services for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and research toward better treatment and a cure.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing public health issue. More than 6.9 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease right now, and that number is expected to more than double by 2060, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Locally, approximately 410,000 New Yorkers, including an estimated 60,000 Long Islanders, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a number which is projected to grow in the years ahead. Free Family Support, Overdose Prevention & Narcan Training Seminars This September
To help save lives and further combat the ongoing opioid epidemic on Long Island, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is partnering with Drug Free Long Island, Thomas’ Hope Foundation and Massapequa Park Village Mayor Daniel Pearl to host free Family Support, Overdose Prevention & Narcan Training Seminars on Monday, September 16th and Monday, September 30th at 6:30pm at in the downstairs meeting rooms of Massapequa Park Village Hall, located at 151 Front Street in Massapequa Park. The program will begin at 6pm with a family support group offering support to family members who have lost a loved one or have a loved one struggling with addiction, followed by a prevention workshop and overdose reversal agent training seminar at 7:30pm.
“We’re addressing the ongoing opioid epidemic on Long Island by offering Support, Overdose Prevention and Narcan Training Seminars for residents to learn the warning signs of drug addiction, obtain information on available treatment options, and learn how to reverse the fatal effects of an opioid overdose by administering a lifesaving antidote,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Whether you or a loved one is struggling with addiction or not, we invite you to join us in September for
the betterment of our community.”
The overdose reversal agent known as Narcan is administered through a nasal spray, and is provided by the YES Community Counseling Center at no charge to trainees over the age of 18. Under New York State law, residents can administer Narcan in an attempt to save a life, without fear of liability.
Mayor Daniel Pearl stated, “Through initiatives like this, we can and will continue to save lives and keep families whole. Together with Drug Free Long Island and Thomas’ Hope Foundation, we are
strengthening our community in its battle with drug use and working with mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and neighbors to identify warning signs and provide help to those struggling with addiction.”
This free Support, Overdose Prevention & Narcan Training Seminar is available to all residents. No prior medical experience is necessary to participate.
