The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers homeowners the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, a fantastic opportunity to save money while making your home more eco-friendly. You can claim a tax credit of up to $3,200 for qualifying energy-efficient improvements installed on or after January 1, 2023.

So, what does this mean for you? In simple terms, for every dollar you spend on qualified energy-efficient improvements, you can reduce your tax liability, up to the specified limit. However, keep in mind that these upgrades must be new products and materials that meet specific energy-efficiency standards to qualify.

Exterior doors that meet applicable standards can qualify for the energy tax credit. You can claim 30% of the project cost, up to $250 per door, with a total limit of $500.

Upgrade to energy-efficient windows to not only reduce your energy bills but also claim tax credits. Homeowners can receive 30% of project costs, up to $600, in tax credits.

The energy tax credit allows homeowners to recover 30% of the costs, up to $1,200, for improving home insulation. This credit can come from attic insulation, wall insulation, or exterior insulation that is placed behind the siding of your home.

If you are looking to take advantage of these tax credits, Unified Home Remodeling has Energy Star approved products and installers to ensure you get the most bang for your buck.

Pravato Reminds Residents

To Avoid Penalties By Paying General Taxes Prior To August 12th

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the Second Half of the 2024 General Tax Levy is due on July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 12th.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid. So make your payment before August 12th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open

at both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card. On August 9th and 12th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. There are also outdoor walkup windows, and drop boxes have been installed at both locations for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please make your

check payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes and indicate your property’s Section, Block and Lot and telephone number on the check.

Tax payments may also be made online through a link on the Town website, www.oysterbaytown. com. Residents may view tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment for a fee of $1.75, or by credit card (for a much higher fee, charged by credit card companies). The Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of this fee.

Residents may contact the Tax Office with any questions about their tax bill at 516-624-6400 or by emailing receiveroftaxes@ oysterbay-ny.gov.

An Inspiring Class Graduates From Massapequa High School

A class with a unique path to graduation made it to that milestone moment on June 21, when Massapequa High School celebrated the Class of 2024 at an evening ceremony at Hofstra University’s Mack Arena.

Speakers noted that they were the first group of sixth graders to attend Berner Middle School, then began their high school years at the Ames Campus coming out of the COVID shutdown. Through it all, they boasted great achievements in multiple aspects of student life.

“The Class of 2024 has been a pleasure to watch mature, excel and evolve into young adults,” said Principal Barbara Lowell, who met them during that

sixth grade year when she was executive assistant to the principal at Berner. “I have been so truly inspired by this class. From the artistically imaginative students, to the musically inclined, to the athletes and academic minded, our trustworthy and reliable students have achieved so many accolades.”

Superintendent Dr. William Brennan told the graduates that they are “the leaders our world needs” because of their ability to make a positive impact, inspire others, foster a sense of community and purpose, and stand up for what’s right. He reminded them that their experiences in Massapequa will help guide them to success.

“The most important part of any structure is its foundation,” he said. “Graduates, from the first brick that was planted by your parents and teachers, each brick has been placed securely. Today, you stand on the bedrock of your Massapequa school experience, enriched by the broader Massapequa community and anchored by your family upbringing.”

Valedictorian Victoria Chu was proud to be part of an amazing group of capable, hardworking and passionate people. Her message to her classmates was based on wise words from Walt Disney about the importance of moving forward.

“Life is filled with twists

and turn, and there may be times when we want to fall back into our comfort zones,” Victoria said. “But taking risks, pushing ourselves outside of the familiar is exactly what has brought us to this success today.”

Salutatorian Ava Minnini said as they graduate high school and prepare for what’s next, they just need to think of the first time they went into the unknown – starting kindergarten.

“As we embark on the stage of our lives, I’m sure we will regress back to the anxiety we felt as kindergartners and our colleges will feel as big as our elementary schools once did,” she said. “We

will undoubtedly face new challenges, and with them, new fears. We have all proven to possess the qualities necessary to propel ourselves beyond our fears.”

Speakers also included general organization President Jayden Pearl and Class of 2024 President Ryan Kurowski. Jayden spoke of health issues he has battled since birth and used those challenges to tell his classmates not to be afraid to run into the storm, “Because something truly amazing can be waiting for you at the other end.” In a humor-filled speech, Ryan also took time to praise the friendly, caring, thoughtful and welcoming Class of 2024, and thank the

administrations, teachers and staff who made their time in Massapequa schools so amazing.

Ms. Lowell recognized four students who will be entering the armed forces or military institutions after high school. Following the presentation of medals in each subject area, it was time to hand out the diplomas to 520 graduates. Retiring Executive Assistant to the Principal Michael Quigley and English teacher Irene Karayiannis announced each name. Once the diplomas were conferred, the tassels were moved and the caps were tossed.

Oyster Bay Named Best Regional Harbor In America

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board are thrilled to announce that Oyster Bay Harbor has been designated as ‘Best Harbor’ winner for the Mid-Atlantic region by the US Harbors organization for 2024.

“US Harbors asked the

public to vote for their favorite harbor out of more than 1500 harbors, exemplifying where they had the most passion for where they live, boat and fish,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are proud to continue many efforts to keep the vitality of our beautiful harbor, including

a highly successful shellfish management program with a soon-tobe expanded hatchery that produces millions of clam and oyster seedlings annually. Working with environmental partners on a variety of initiatives to protect our harbor, we will continue these initiatives

to help naturally clean our waterways, protect our shoreline and filter local waters while repopulating shellfish.”

Started by US Harbors in 2019, the ‘Best Harbor in the U.S.’ contest allows users to vote on their favorite of over 1,500 coastal and Great Lakes

harbors from March to May of each year. U.S. Harbors notes that the contest ‘truly reflects the pride and passion people feel for their local coastal communities.’

“The protection of our natural assets is a high priority for our Town Board, and we will continue our vast efforts

to protect the quality and resiliency of our waters,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“We thank U.S. Harbors for this great honor and all who supported Oyster Bay Harbor as the best midAtlantic regional harbor!”

July Is National Blueberry Month

What is so special about them?

Well, to begin with, these berries are grown throughout a good percentage of the United States. Over 90% of all of the blueberries in the world are produced in our country, in thirtyfive states. And the nutritional value of blueberries cannot be beat by any other fruit or vegetable. Blueberries are full of antioxidants, which have been scientifically proven to help reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. They are also excellent sources of vitamins A and C, as well as potassium, folic acid, and fiber. Plus, they are low in calories-one cup of berries is only about 80 calories. And were you aware that blueberries are virtually fatfree, cholesterol-free, and sodium-free?

Councilman Tom Hand

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently administered the oath of office to officers of the Nassau Shores Civic Association. Officers include President John Guerriero, Vice President Michael Dell’Anno, Recording Secretary Dan Riveira and Corresponding Secretary Roxana Riveira. Treasurer

Nadia Cooblall was unable to attend.

“Civic Associations are an important component of our community as they bring people together to talk about important issues in our neighborhoods,” said Councilman Hand. “As your representative in Town government, I can certainly assure our civic associations

that Town officials appreciate working with you to make our community an even greater place to live, work and raise a family. These Nassau Shores Civic Association officers should be proud in knowing that on a daily basis, throughout their terms, they make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

Hundreds Of Children Attend Pool Safety Seminar

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with officials from Catholic Health to host a Pool and Summer Safety Seminar at Marjorie Post Community Park. In recent years, fatal drownings for children under the age of 15 has increased by 12 percent, with drowning remaining the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 years old. Additionally,

children under the age of 5 make up nearly 80 percent of all nonfatal drowning injuries each year.

“We all know that summer is time for fun in the sun and cooling off in the pool. However, that fun comes with a great deal of responsibility. That’s why we hosted this Summer Safety Day in the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We thank St.

Joseph Hospital and Catholic Health for partnering with us to host this important program and bringing pool safety awareness to hundreds of youngsters.”

Seminar attendees learned about healthy swimming, basic first aid, hypothermia, cramping, drowning prevention, basic CPR (not certification), recreational water wellness and EMS ambulance education.

Massapequa Welcomes Back Experience Athletic Leader

The Massapequa School District announces that Martin Voigt has been named the district’s interim director of physical education, health, athletics and recreation for the 202425 school year. Mr. Voigt worked in the district for more than three decades as an administrator, teacher and coach before retiring in 2021.

His career in Massapequa began in 1985 as a physical education teacher, and worked at Birch Lane, East Lake and Hawthorn elementary schools during his tenure. In 2001, he moved up to Massapequa High School to serve as the physical education chairperson and athletic coordinator for the main and Ames campuses. His responsibilities included overseeing the high school physical education curriculum and budget, staff development and athletic facility usage, conducting teacher

observations and evaluations, and serving as a liaison to the district athletic director.

As chairperson, Mr. Voigt spearheaded the creation of the high school’s selective physical education program which gave students more choice in their activities, introduced a personal fitness and wellness component to the program, and developed the online Pex and home instruction program for physical education.

Mr. Voigt is an accomplished coach in the district. He led the boys varsity basketball team to more than 300 victories in 28 seasons, along with four conference championships. He also served as junior varsity football coach for nine years and an assistant basketball coach at Hofstra University for eight years.

One of his proudest accomplishments was launching an annual alumni basketball game

to raise money for the Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research, in honor of his father.

Mr. Voigt is a Massapequa Hall of Fame inductee, a recipient of Adelphi University’s Department of Health and Sports Science Ronald Feingold Award, an administrator of the year honoree from Long Island’s Council of Administrators and Supervisors and a three-time winner of the Section VIII Coach of the Year award.

“I am looking forward to working with the physical education teachers and athletic coaching staff,” Mr. Voigt said of his new role, “and utilizing my 38 years of experience in both teaching and coaching. Massapequa’s physical education program is a model and our athletics is one of the most highly regarded programs in the state.”

Dangerous Budget Inn Motel Permanently Closed And

Will Be Demolished Town Reaches Legal Settlement To Demolish

Structurally Unsafe Motel & Hub For Criminal Activity

In a tremendous victory for public safety and our suburban quality of life, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced the permanent closure and future demolition of the Budget Inn Motel in Massapequa.

The Town previously filed a lawsuit to address longstanding concerns about the property, which was deemed structurally dangerous and a hub for criminal activity. A legal settlement has since been reached to close and demolish all buildings on the property.

“There’s nothing more important to the Town Board and I than protecting your safety and your quality of life, which is why I’m

Town

proud to announce that the Budget Inn Motel will remain closed, and will be demolished,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This eyesore was the location of violent criminal activity and was in a serious state of disrepair. We took immediate action to rid our community of this dangerous property, and today’s settlement is a tremendous victory for the Town of Oyster Bay and all our residents.”

Under the terms of the settlement, all structures on the property will be demolished by June 30, 2025 and the Town will be reimbursed for the expenses it incurred during the litigation process. Additionally, all certificates of occupancy for the Budget Inn remain revoked, so

Clerk

the structure may not be occupied. Previous news reports indicate that 15 arrests took place at the Budget Inn in 2023, including for criminal possession of a weapon, promotion of prostitution and assault. Inspections of the motel have led to numerous code violations.

“The closure of the Budget Inn Motel is a major step forward in our efforts to address properties that pose a danger to the public,” Supervisor Saladino added. “The agreed-upon demolition and reimbursement will not only remove an unsafe structure but also ensure town taxpayers aren’t forced to bear the financial burden of this careless property owner.”
