New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) recently held his 4th Annual Women Distinction Ceremony at the Marjorie Post Community Center in Massapequa Park, recognizing ten extraordinary women for their professional accomplishments, personal achievements, and significant contributions to their communities.
The honorees are leaders, entrepreneurs, mothers, wives and role models from diverse backgrounds and fields, who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations.
The event kicked off with performances by Massapequa High School’s String Ensemble, Emily Ogurick singing the National Anthem, and the Chordettes, a talented acapella group singing the classics with their harmonious renditions.
Babylon resident, Joan Caliendo, a 2022 Women of Distinction and current Ms. New York Senior America, was the keynote speaker. She delivered inspiring words of encouragement, determination, and taking risks no matter what your age. Joan recently participated in the National Ms. Senior

The tale of the grumpy ogre and the princess with a deep, dark secret is coming to the Berner Middle School stage in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 22 and 23. A cast of 80 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will perform “Shrek the Musical.”
Leading actors include
eighth grader Dominic Lovaglio as Shrek, eighth grader Nicole Fontana as Fiona, eighth grader Lily Haberly as Dragon, eighth grader Michael Giudice as Donkey, seventh grader Avery Etter as Gingy and sixth grader Benjamin Law as Pinocchio. This year’s cast features many seasoned
eighth graders who not only have appeared in prior Berner shows, but also have extensive experience with outside theater groups.
Director Katie Pearsall said having a core of talented character actors and strong singers is what led her to pick “Shrek” as this year’s show. She described the
students as a creative group who will succeed in making the musical a success.
“We have a very talented ensemble,” Dominic said, adding that he is looking forward to the lead-up to the show, known as tech week. “That’s when everything comes together, it’s almost show time and you have to be ready.”
Nicole described “Shrek” as a kid-friendly show, but one that audiences of all ages will enjoy because most
people are familiar with the movie. Lily explained that the choreography of the show will stand out, and the cast has been working very hard to master the dance moves.
“Everyone puts in the work to make it a success,” she said.
Major musical numbers include “Big Bright Beautiful World,” “Forever,” “Story of My Life” and “Who I’d Be.” Ms. Pearsall is supported by choreographer Danielle
Coutieri, vocal director Christina Simon, production assistant Siobhan Healy, stage crew director Jason Kavanaugh and art director Allison Clemente. Show times are Friday, Nov. 22, and Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Berner Middle School auditorium. General admission tickets are $10. For more information, call the fine and performing arts department at (516) 308-5085.

Trends come and go, and that impermanence can make it hard to predict how certain times of year, including the holiday season, will play out. However, one notable trend in regard to the holiday season that has seemingly withstood the test of time is the popularity of Black Friday among holiday shoppers. But even that dynamic has shifted in the digital age. Though Black Friday remains a big day for retailers, consumers spend more on Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) than they do on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving).
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Tax Receiver Jeffrey Pravato and Massapequa Shores Civic Association President Tony Manougian officially opened new pickleball courts for play at Anchor Park in Massapequa. Due to popular demand, the Town constructed new pickleball courts for local residents.
“Pickleball is a fun sport
for all ages that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s become incredibly popular in our Town, with seniors and families playing daily at our existing courts,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Due to this popular demand, I’m proud to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay constructed new pickleball courts for all
residents to enjoy.”
“Pickleball is a very fun, social and healthy activity for the whole family and these new courts will be a welcome addition to the community. So, grab your sneakers and paddle, and get ready to play one of the world’s fastest growing sports at the new courts in in Oyster Bay this summer!” added Tax Receiver Pravato.

The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of
DVDs all around the world and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. “After researching and interviewing a number of realtors to sell our Massapequa home, we decided on using the Michele and Mark Goodman Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. Michele and Mark conducted thorough market research, had expert historical knowledge of the house and its community and were very knowledgeable of the various selling features the neighborhood offered. The Team’s confident approach to listing and marketing the property was effective, resulting in strong prospect interest and ultimately a very satisfying sales price within a short time frame. They also did an excellent job keeping us informed along the way and were, without fail, extremely responsive to questions sent to them regardless of the time of day.” ... Jeffrey Tomitz
“I highly recommend the Michele & Mark Goodman Team to both “Sellers“ & “Purchasers” due to their unparalleled negotiation skills, their marketing expertise & their 24/7 availability to answer all my questions & handle all the intricate details of each transaction. I’ve hired them for 4 of my sales & purchases & would definitely hire them again because they exceeded my expectations, are dedicated, extremely knowledgeable, experts in their field, true professionals & definitely a 5 STAR TEAM!” ... Jaimee Guttman
“We give Michele & Mark Goodman our very highest recommendation!! My husband who is a real estate attorney & I knew that we wanted Michele and Mark to find a buyer for our home and quickly! That was a good decision!! They found a buyer within a few weeks & negotiated a price of $82,000 higher than our asking. We have already recommended this team to clients and will highly recommend them to friends & family. They are true professionals!!” ... Arnie & Resa Hauptman
